The effect of drought and heat stress on reproductive processes in cereals   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14  
As the result of intensive research and breeding efforts over the last 20 years, the yield potential and yield quality of cereals have been greatly improved. Nowadays, yield safety has gained more importance because of the forecasted climatic changes. Drought and high temperature are especially considered as key stress factors with high potential impact on crop yield. Yield safety can only be improved if future breeding attempts will be based on the valuable new knowledge acquired on the processes determining plant development and its responses to stress. Plant stress responses are very complex. Interactions between plant structure, function and the environment need to be investigated at various phases of plant development at the organismal, cellular as well as molecular levels in order to obtain a full picture. The results achieved so far in this field indicate that various plant organs, in a definite hierarchy and in interaction with each other, are involved in determining crop yield under stress. Here we attempt to summarize the currently available information on cereal reproduction under drought and heat stress and to give an outlook towards potential strategies to improve yield safety in cereals.  相似文献

What makes a sperm male or an egg female, and how can we tell? A gamete's gender could be defined in many ways, such as the sex of the individual or organ that produced it, its cellular morphology, or its behaviour at fertilization. In flowering plants and mammals, however, there is an extra dimension to the gender of a gamete – due to parental imprinting, some of the genes it contributes to the next generation will have different expression patterns depending on whether they were maternally or paternally transmitted. The non-equivalence of gamete genomes, along with natural and experimental modification of imprinting, reveal a level of sexual identity that we describe as ‘epigender’. In this paper, we explore epigender in the life history of plants and animals, and its significance for reproduction and development.  相似文献

Bindin, a sea urchin sperm protein, mediates sperm-egg attachment and membrane fusion and is thus important in species recognition and speciation. Patterns of bindin variation differed among three genera that had been studied previously. In two genera of the superorder Camarodonta, Echinometra and Strongylocentrotus, both of which contain sympatric species, bindin is highly variable within and between species; a region of the molecule evolves at high rates under strong positive selection. In Arbacia, which belongs to the superorder Stirodonta and whose extant species are all allopatric, bindin variation is low, and there is no evidence of positive selection. We cloned and sequenced bindin from Tripneustes, a sea urchin that belongs to the Camarodonta but whose three species are found in different oceans. Worldwide sampling of bindin alleles shows that the bindin of Tripneustes (1) contains the highly conserved core characteristic of all other bindins characterized to date, (2) has an intron in the same position, and (3) has approximately the same length. Its structure is more like that of bindin from other camarodont sea urchins than to bindin from the stirodont ARBACIA: The resemblances to other camarodonts include a glycine-rich repeat structure upstream of the core and lack of a hydrophobic domain 3' of the core, a characteristic of Arbacia bindin. Yet the mode of evolution of Tripneustes bindin is more like that of Arbacia. Differences between bindins of the Caribbean Tripneustes ventricosus and the eastern Pacific T. depressus, separated for 3 my by the Isthmus of Panama, are limited to four amino acid changes and a single indel. There are no fixed amino acid differences or indels between T. depressus from the eastern Pacific and T. gratilla from the Indo-Pacific. Bindin of Tripneustes, like that of Arbacia, also shows no evidence of diversifying selection that would manifest itself in a higher proportion of amino acid replacements than of silent nucleotide substitutions. When the rate of intrageneric bindin divergence is standardized by dividing it by cytochrome oxidase I (COI) divergence, Tripneustes and Arbacia show a lower ratio of bindin to COI substitutions between the species of each genus than exists between the species of either Echinometra or Strongylocentrotus. Thus, mode of bindin evolution is not correlated with phylogenetic affinities or molecular structure, but rather with whether the species in a genus are allopatric or sympatric. For a molecule involved in gametic recognition, this would suggest a pattern of evolution via reinforcement. However, in bindin the process that gave rise to this pattern is not likely to have been selection to avoid hybridization, because there is no excess of amino acid replacements between species versus within species in the bindins of Echinometra and Strongylocentrotus, as would have been expected if specific recognition were the driving force in their evolution. We suggest instead that the pattern of reinforcement is a secondary effect of the ability of species with rapidly evolving bindins to coexist in sympatry.  相似文献

The present study aims to analyze the effect of the stage of the estrous cycle at the time of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) injection on number and quality of mouse oocytes retrieved from oviducts after exogenous ovarian stimulation. Cellular and morphological traits of ovulated oocytes from hybrid (C57Bl/6JIco female X CBA/JIco male) female mice of 12, 40-42, 50-52 or 57-62 weeks of age were analyzed. Superovulation was induced by a priming injection of PMSG at different stages of the estrous cycle followed after a 48-hr interval by human chrorionic gonadotropin. Injection of PMSG at diestrus-1 was associated with: (1) increased percentage of cumulus-free oocytes; (2) raised total percentage of oocytes without polar body; (3) increased total percentage of oocytes with intracytoplasmic mitochondrial aggregates; (4) decreased percentage of oocytes with a normal distribution of chromosomes in the metaphase II plate; and (5) raised percentage of oocytes with chromosome scattering when compared to injection at estrus, diestrus-2, and proestrus stage. On the contrary, estrus females displayed the highest percentage of oocytes with a normal distribution of chromosomes in the metaphase II plate and the lowest percentage of oocytes denuded of cumulus cells, without polar body, with intracytoplasmic mitochondrial aggregates and/or with chromosome scattering. These data suggest that administration of gonadotropins in mice should be synchronized with the innate estrous cycle of females to optimize the quality of oocytes collected from oviducts.  相似文献

Bindin is a gamete recognition protein known to control species-specificsperm-egg adhesion and membrane fusion in sea urchins. Previousanalyses have shown that diversifying selection on bindin aminoacid sequence is found when gametically incompatible speciesare compared, but not when species are compatible. The presentstudy analyzes bindin polymorphism and divergence in the threeclosely related species of Echinometra in Central America: E.lucunter and E. viridis from the Caribbean, and E. vanbruntifrom the eastern Pacific. The eggs of E. lucunter have evolveda strong block to fertilization by sperm of its neotropicalcongeners, whereas those of the other two species have not.As in the Indo-West Pacific (IWP) Echinometra, the neotropicalspecies show high intraspecific bindin polymorphism in the samegene regions as in the IWP species. Maximum likelihood analysisshows that many of the polymorphic codon sites are under mildpositive selection. Of the fixed amino acid replacements, mosthave accumulated along the bindin lineage of E. lucunter. Weanalyzed the data with maximum likelihood models of variationin positive selection across lineages and codon sites, and withmodels that consider sites and lineages simultaneously. Ourresults show that positive selection is concentrated along theE. lucunter bindin lineage, and that codon sites with aminoacid replacements fixed in this species show by far the highestsignal of positive selection. Lineage-specific positive selectionparalleling egg incompatibility provides support that adaptiveevolution of sperm proteins acts to maintain recognition ofbindin by changing egg receptors. Because both egg incompatibilityand bindin divergence are greater between allopatric speciesthan between sympatric species, the hypothesis of selectionagainst hybridization (reinforcement) cannot explain why adaptiveevolution has been confined to a single lineage in the AmericanEchinometra. Instead, processes acting to varying degrees withinspecies (e.g., sperm competition, sexual selection, and sexualconflict) are more promising explanations for lineage-specificpositive selection on bindin.  相似文献

The sea slug Navanax inermis (Gastropoda, Opisthobranchia) is a well‐known example of a simultaneous hermaphrodite in which mating partners trade sperm. According to previous work by others, sperm trading follows from a general preference for the female role when the expected variance in reproductive success in the male role is higher and the risk of failure therefore larger. However, this view contradicts theoretical and empirical studies of other systems, which predict a general preference for the male role; sperm trading is assumed to follow from the fact that individuals benefit from sperm receipt as a nutritional compensation for sperm investment. In this study, we investigate the behaviour of N. inermis in more detail. In addition to observations of regular pairs, we also paired individuals with a partner that had been isolated for 33 days in order to induce changes in sex‐role preference in the non‐isolated partner. We also collected all clutches produced throughout the study to check for signs of infertility as a consequence of allosperm depletion. Fertility of field‐collected and isolated individuals suggested that sperm depletion occurs under natural conditions and may be caused by a lack of partners. Although this argues in favour of female preference, low mating rates both reduce variance in male reproductive success and remove the intent to use sperm for nutritional purposes, thus eliminating the conditions under which both hypotheses are intended to operate. The observational data indicate that animals are eager to mate as males, particularly at the beginning of a mating session. Intromissions lasted longer when a simultaneous intromission was received from the partner. Increases in intromission were recorded in non‐isolated individuals with partners which were previously isolated and therefore more attractive as females. This response would not have been expected were the female role the preferred one. A summary of the arguments concerning preference for either gender suggests some preference for the male role, but indicates that sexual preferences may actually change or become neutral within an individual, even in the course of a mating session.
