Understanding patterns and processes involved in changes in soil and vegetation after agricultural abandonment is a key issue for management policies leading to land restoration and reclamation in Mediterranean semiarid environments. We selected a number of active and abandoned fields in two regions of olive groves in Catalonia (NE Spain), in order to analyze changes in certain soil properties and vegetation cover variables, as well as their interrelationships. The soil chemical properties considered, summarized into a single PCA axis, showed significant spatial (regional) differences and no temporal (successional) pattern, indicative of the strong influence of the parent rock material. The soil physical variables examined also showed significant regional variability, but such differences could be partially explained by successional changes. The variability at the landscape level and the observed successional trends for soil physical properties are interpreted as a result of both the influence of the bedrock and contrasting management practices prior to abandonment in each region. Although we did not find significant regional or successional variability in a global measure of plant cover, we did find significant and different patterns of variability for each of the main plant functional groups considered. Regional and post-agricultural variability in soil physical properties seem to be the prime factors determining the abundance of the main plant functional groups. 相似文献

Adaptation to any given environment may be accompanied by a cost in terms of reduced growth in the ancestral or some alternative environment. Ecologists explain the cost of adaptation through the concept of a trade‐off, by which gaining a new trait involves losing another trait. Two mechanisms have been invoked to explain the evolution of trade‐offs in ecological systems, mutational degradation, and functional interference. Mutational degradation occurs when a gene coding a specific trait is not under selection in the resident environment; therefore, it may be degraded through the accumulation of mutations that are neutral in the resident environment but deleterious in an alternative environment. Functional interference evolves if the gene or a set of genes have antagonistic effects in two or more ecologically different traits. Both mechanisms pertain to a situation where the selection and the alternative environments are ecologically different. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment in which 12 experimental populations of wild yeast were each grown in a minimal medium supplemented with a single substrate. We chose 12 different carbon substrates that were metabolized through similar and different pathways in order to represent a wide range of ecological conditions. We found no evidence for trade‐offs between substrates on the same pathway. The indirect response of substrates on other pathways, however, was consistently negative, with little correlation between the direct and indirect responses. We conclude that the grain of specialization in this case is the metabolic pathway and that specialization appears to evolve through mutational degradation. 相似文献

Question: How does restoration affect the hydrology and the understorey vegetation of managed pine fens? Location: Oligotrophic pine fens in Natura 2000 areas in Kainuu, eastern Finland. Methods: Eleven managed pine fens and eight pristine reference pine fens were chosen for the study in 2005. The managed fens, which had been drained for forestry during the 1970s and 1980s, were restored in 2007. The water table was monitored in all fens over four growing seasons during 2006 to 2009, and vegetation was surveyed from permanent sample plots in 2006 and 2009. Results: Before restoration in 2006, the water table was at a significantly lower level in the managed fens compared with the pristine fens. Immediately after restoration, the water table rose to the same level as in the pristine fens, and this change was permanent. Forest drainage had had little impact on the understorey vegetation of the managed fens in the three decades before restoration, with species typical of pristine fens still dominating the sites. Forest dwarf shrubs and feather mosses had started to increase in cover, but mire dwarf shrubs and Sphagnum mosses still dominated the managed fens. Only the typical hollow species Sphagnum majus, Sphagnum balticum and Scheuzeria palustris were missing from the managed fens. Two years after restoration, the changes in species composition were also marginal, with increased cover of mire dwarf shrubs and sedges being the only significant change. Conclusions: The success of restoration of oligotrophic pine fens seems likely, given that changes in hydrological functioning occurred rapidly, and since little change has occurred in the vegetation composition after draining. Speeding up the regeneration process in these peatland types by restoration may, therefore, be recommended, especially if the drainage effect extends to nearby pristine mires and influences their biodiversity. 相似文献

The responses of the field mouse Mus booduga to shifts in schedules of LD cycles were monitored and the results were interpreted with the help of a PRC constructed for the same species. The results reveal that, M. booduga reentrained faster with a lesser number of transients after delay shifts than advance shifts, thus exhibiting “asymmetry effect.” A positive correlation was observed between the number of transients and the number of hours of shift. In most of the shifts, the sign of the transients (negative for delaying transients and positive for advancing transients) coincided with the direction of the shift. Interestingly, 11 and 12 h of advance shifting resulted in delaying transients. An 11-h advance shift can also be interpreted as a 13-h delay. Reentrainment through delaying transients is faster as compared to reentrainment through advancing transients. Thus, this animal might have taken a “shorter route,” as proved by the fact that an 11-h advance shift has evoked delaying transients. But a 13-h advance shift evoked only advancing transients. This prompts us to speculate that there may be a “phase jump” in M. booduga. Further, irrespective of whether L or D has been doubled in a 12-h shift, both evoked only delaying transients. 相似文献

Abstract The prey consumption of ovipositing female adults of the ladybeetle Chilocorus kuwanae on the scale Unaspis yanonensis was found to be significantly greater than that of the male adults. At 25°C one female adult ladybeetle, on average, would consume 42. 7 female scale adult per day while one male adult only destroyed 22. 3 female scale adults. However, after a deprivation of the prey for 48 h, this difference was eliminated. A C. kuwanae female adult had to prey on at least 15 U. vanonensis female adults in order to lay eggs. The funcional responses of the beetle adults to densities of different stages of the scale followed Holling's type 1. The functional responses to female scale adults indicated that the maximum prey consumption went up with the increase in temperature from 16°C to 35°C, and dropped sharply at 37°C. However, temperature did not alter the type of the functional response. Rased on the predation of C. kuwanae adults on U. yanonensis female adults, the minimum critical, optimal and maximum critical temperatures for their attack were estimated to be 10. 6°C, 31. 5°C and 38. 2°C respectively. The increase in predation space or in predator density could result in a reduction in the attack rat-e, but with the increase of predator density, the effect of predation space became much smaller. C. kuwanae adults preferred male pupae to other stages of the scale, and their preference for various stages of the prey was in the order of male pupae, 2nd-instar male nymphs, 2nd-instar female nymphs, adult females and kinstar nymphs. 相似文献

A quantum mechanics (QM)/molecular mechanics (MM) hybrid method was applied to the Pr state of the cyanobacterial phytochrome Cph1 to calculate the Raman spectra of the bound PCB cofactor. Two QM/MM models were derived from the atomic coordinates of the crystal structure. The models differed in the protonation site of His260 in the chromophore-binding pocket such that either the δ-nitrogen (M-HSD) or the ɛ-nitrogen (M-HSE) carried a hydrogen. The optimized structures of the two models display small differences specifically in the orientation of His260 with respect to the PCB cofactor and the hydrogen bond network at the cofactor-binding site. For both models, the calculated Raman spectra of the cofactor reveal a good overall agreement with the experimental resonance Raman (RR) spectra obtained from Cph1 in the crystalline state and in solution, including Cph1 adducts with isotopically labeled PCB. However, a distinctly better reproduction of important details in the experimental spectra is provided by the M-HSD model, which therefore may represent an improved structure of the cofactor site. Thus, QM/MM calculations of chromoproteins may allow for refining crystal structure models in the chromophore-binding pocket guided by the comparison with experimental RR spectra. Analysis of the calculated and experimental spectra also allowed us to identify and assign the modes that sensitively respond to chromophore-protein interactions. The most pronounced effect was noted for the stretching mode of the methine bridge A-B adjacent to the covalent attachment site of PCB. Due a distinct narrowing of the A-B methine bridge bond angle, this mode undergoes a large frequency upshift as compared with the spectrum obtained by QM calculations for the chromophore in vacuo. In this paper, a one-prey-n-predator impulsive reaction-diffusion periodic predator–prey system with ratio-dependent functional response is investigated. On the basis of the upper and lower solution method and comparison theory of differential equation, sufficient conditions on the ultimate boundedness and permanence of the predator–prey system are established. By constructing an appropriate auxiliary function, the conditions for the existence of a unique globally stable positive periodic solution are also obtained.
