Trap sampling over reefs in deep (mean = 20 m) and shallow (mean = 10 m) waters along c. 1500 km of coastline in tropical north‐western Australia during both day and night and in wet and dry periods yielded 23 377 fishes, representing 32 families, 58 genera and 119 species. Individuals of the Serranidae, Lutjanidae, Lethrinidae and Carangidae contributed 88·9% to the total catch. The ichthyofaunal compositions of the Kimberley, Canning and Pilbara bioregions were relatively discrete. Species composition was influenced far more by location (latitude) than by water depth, period and time of day, and underwent a gradational change southwards. The latter change reflected differences in the trends exhibited by the relative abundances of certain species with increasing latitude and the confinement of other species largely to particular regions. The three most abundant species, i.e. Lethrinus sp. 3, Lutjanus carponotatus and Lethrinus laticaudis contributed 34·8, 20·8 and 11·6% to the total catch, respectively. The first species was rarely recorded in the two most northern locations and was abundant in the four most southern locations, whereas the last two species were relatively more abundant in northern than in southern locations. Lutjanus bitaeniatus and Lutjanus johnii were found exclusively at the two locations in the Kimberley region, whereas Abalistes stellatus, Pentapodus emeryii and Lethrinus nebulosus were not caught in this region but were found in both locations of the Canning and Pilbara regions. The species composition in deep and shallow waters at each location almost invariably differed significantly between day and night and between dry and wet periods, with species such as L. bitaeniatus, L. johnii, Lutjanus sebae and A. stellatus being more abundant over deep reefs, whereas L. carponotatus, L. laticaudis, Siganus fuscescens and Lethrinus lentjan were more numerous over shallow reefs. Species such as L. johnii and Lethrinus atkinsoni were relatively more important in night‐time than daytime catches, whereas the reverse applied to Lethrinus lentjan, L. laticaudis and Choerodon cyanodus. This study characterized the behavioral activity of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in the early stages of development, under different stocking densities (25 and 40 animals/m2), and during the light and dark phases of a 24-h cycle. Observations of individuals were made in 8 aquariums. Behavioral recording lasted 15 min/aquarium, 4 times/day and 4 days/week, 4 weeks in total. Food was offered twice daily. Observational methods included a combination of behavioral sampling and scan sampling. During the light phase, inactivity, cleaning and remaining in a shelter were the most frequent behaviors. During the dark phase the subjects displayed a higher frequency of feeding, exploration, swimming, and digging. At low density, the animals gained more weight and exhibited greater growth overall. These results indicate a behavioral pattern that is more favorable to animals in the lower density cultivation environment that can also create better living conditions for these shrimp, favor survival rates and therefore improve management success. 相似文献

The reproductive periodicity of the sparid, Acanthopagrus pacificus, over four temporal scales is described. Acanthopagrus pacificus had a short spawning season between June and September, and within this, a peak reproductive period from July to early September. During the peak period there were several spawning peaks corresponding to a lunar periodicity, with intense reproductive activity on new and full moons that peaked during the period of the full moon when the tidal range was greatest. At the smallest temporal scale, spawning occurred at night on ebb tides. Because this study draws on data collected in 1991 and 1995, it provides a useful baseline against which to judge future changes in reproductive periodicity. 相似文献

The literature pertaining to the use of registered antibacterial agents in Mediterranean finfish farming is reviewed, with
an emphasis on the Greek fish-farming industry. This review provides a scientific resource dedicated to the design of future
antibacterial dosing regimes in Mediterranean fish farming, where insufficient supporting information is currently available.
This paper addresses the paucity in knowledge concerning pharmacokinetics and the efficacy and environmental impact of commonly
used antibacterials needed to direct future research and promote good practices in the euryhaline fish farming industry. Several
registered antibacterials are currently available for combating bacterial infections, including tetracyclines, (fluoro) quinolones,
potentiated sulfa, penicillin and chloramphenicol derivatives. Based on the available data, oxytetracycline (OTC) and quinolone
drugs (oxolinic acid – OA and flumequine – FLU) are the most widely used in Mediterranean aquaculture. As a result these drugs
have received the most extensive studies, whereas, there is considerable paucity of reliable data on pharmacokinetic and the
depletion characteristics of other drugs used, particularly potentiated sulfa, penicillin derivatives and florfenicol. We
find there is incomplete data on drug efficacy and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for common antibacterials used
against the major bacterial pathogens of Mediterranean fish species. Furthermore, a considerable lack of data on environmental
drug concentrations around Mediterranean fish farms was also identified, highlighting the need for more extensive environmental
studies to monitor contamination in environmental components i.e., water and sediment, and in non-target species (flora and
fauna). Prudent selection and use of antibacterials can encourage lower dosage applications, enhance treatment efficacy, and
help to minimize contamination of the environment. Selection of readily bioavailable drugs which have low environmental persistence,
low aquatic toxicity and high antibacterial efficacy is advised, to reduce potential losses to the environment and associated
toxic effects on target species and the development of bacterial resistance. Lack of present data made it impossible to provide
thorough and accurate guidance on selection and use of antibacterials and approaches for minimizing environmental impacts
for the treatment of major euryhaline aquaculture species. 相似文献

C3larvin toxin is a new member of the C3 class of the mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase toxin family. The C3 toxins are known to covalently modify small G-proteins, e.g. RhoA, impairing their function, and serving as virulence factors for an offending pathogen. A full-length X-ray structure of C3larvin (2.3 Å) revealed that the characteristic mixed α/β fold consists of a central β-core flanked by two helical regions. Topologically, the protein can be separated into N and C lobes, each formed by a β-sheet and an α-motif, and connected by exposed loops involved in the recognition, binding, and catalysis of the toxin/enzyme, i.e. the ADP-ribosylation turn–turn and phosphate–nicotinamide PN loops. Herein, we provide two new C3larvin X-ray structures and present a systematic study of the toxin dynamics by first analyzing the experimental variability of the X-ray data-set followed by contrasting those results with theoretical predictions based on Elastic Network Models (GNM and ANM). We identify residues that participate in the stability of the N-lobe, putative hinges at loop residues, and energy-favored deformation vectors compatible with conformational changes of the key loops and 3D-subdomains (N/C-lobes), among the X-ray structures. We analyze a larger ensemble of known C3bot1 conformations and conclude that the characteristic ‘crab-claw’ movement may be driven by the main intrinsic modes of motion. Finally, via computational simulations, we identify harmonic and anharmonic fluctuations that might define the C3larvin ‘native state.’ Implications for docking protocols are derived. 相似文献

It is widely believed that environmental variability is the main cause for fluctuations in commercially exploited small pelagic
fish populations around the world. Nevertheless, density-dependent factors also can drive population dynamics. In this paper,
we analyzed thirteen years of a relative abundance index of two clupeoids fish populations coexisting in the central-south
area off Chile, namely the common sardine, Strangomera bentincki, and anchovy, Engraulis ringens. We applied the classical diagnostic tools of time series analysis to the observed time-series. Also, the realized per capita
population growth rate was studied with the aim of detecting the feedback structure that is characterizing the population
dynamics of the two species. The analysis suggests that population fluctuations of the two species have an important density-dependent
component, displaying first-order (direct density-dependent) and second-order (delayed density-dependent) simultaneously.
The density-dependent component explained 70.5 and 55.6 % of the realized per capita population growth rate of common sardine
and anchovy, respectively. The deterministic skeleton model showed an asymptotic convergence to equilibrium density. In presence
of a stochastic environment, fluctuations were reproduced for the species showing a component of fluctuation with a period
of 4 year. The intrinsic dynamics of each species is typical of interacting species resulting from trophic interactions. It
is postulated that the second-order dynamics of S. bentincki and E. ringens in central-south Chile, may be the result from interactions with a specialist predator (the fishing fleet), interacting with

Development of the visual system of anchovy larvae,Engraulis anchoita: A microanatomical description

During the early ontogeny of fish larvae, the accurate development of the visual system plays a key role, because it is involved in locating food, orientation, selection of favorable habitat, and evasion of predators. The structure of the eye of the fish is typical of vertebrates, with some modifications related to the aquatic environment. In the present work, we describe the development of the larval eye of Engraulis anchoita for the first time. Larvae were collected at the Permanent Station of Environmental Studies (EPEA) in coastal waters of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean during research cruises in 2015 and 2016. We describe the histology of the retina layers, determine the beginning of the functionality of the eye, and discuss a possible synchronization with the development of the digestive tract. This study provides information about the biology of E. anchoita, the most abundant fish species in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Also, recent studies have shown responses of the retina and other tissues to the increase in environmental acidity. Therefore, results of this study are also discussed with respect to the possible effect of acidification on the larvae of this species. The continuity of the time series developed at the EPEA will allow monitoring the effect of long-term environmental and biological variables on the early ontogeny of anchovy in the context of climate change. The high commercial fishing potential of E. anchoita due to its high abundance, as well as its essential role in the trophic web of other commercially valuable fishing resources of Argentina, reinforce the need to continue deepening knowledge about this species. - Eyes of Engraulis anchoita larvae are functional from early larval stages.
- At hatching, the retina is formed by only few layers from which the other layers differentiates during ontogeny.
- Focal distance increases with larval growth.
