Divergent natural selection is often believed to be the driving force behind phenotypic differentiation in characters related to resource acquisition, leading to trophic polymorphism in fishes. Here we use variation in the fatty acid composition of adipose and muscle tissues to look at differences in resource use by two recently described sympatric morphs of Percichthys trucha , a common freshwater fish of the Andean and Patagonian regions of South America. Because dietary fatty acids are often stored in carnivorous animals with litde modification after consumption, they can be used to infer information about dietary habits of individuals. We found that the two morphs differed in the overall composition of fatty acids in both adipose and muscle tissue, but that there were some differences in how die morphs differed in lakes from the northern vs southern part of the range. Furthermore, we found that certain fatty acids were correlated with diet as determined by gut content analysis. Consumption of anisopteran larvae was highly correlated widi 14:0 in adipose and muscle tissue; and higher levels of longer chain unsaturated fatty acids (i.e. 20 and 22 carbons) were correlated with die presence offish and also amphipods in die diets. Taken togetiier, die results suggest that diere are marked differences in die foraging ecology of die two morphs of P. trucha inhabiting southern Andean lakes.  相似文献

Eggs of 23 Characiformes and eight Siluriformes, belonging to nine families with diverse reproductive behaviour, were ultrastructurally analysed. The migratory species exhibited non-adhesive eggs, whereas, most of the sedentary species presented some degree of egg adhesiveness. Among the Characiformes, non-adhesive eggs showed zona radiata with pore-canals or a fibrillar net at the surface; weakly adhesive eggs presented only zona radiata with pore-canals while adhesive eggs exhibited zona radiata with apparatus like globules, filaments, villi or honeycomb-like pores depending on the systematic group. The 'jelly' coat is strongly related to the Siluriformes eggs apparently without relationship with adhesiveness. A micropylar disc was present in adhesive eggs of a few species of both Characiformes and Siluriformes. Some patterns were characteristic of the animal pole, others of the vegetal pole, and others were common to both poles. The radial ridges converging to the micropyle in Astyanax bimaculatus lacustris appear to be related to fertilization. In general, egg surface structures in the Characiformes varied according to the genus, whereas all Siluriformes showed a similar egg surface pattern, regardless of the group analysed. Multivariate analysis allowed the identification of eight clusters among the Characiformes and three among the Siluriformes showing relationships between reproductive style and egg characteristics. It is suggested that egg surface and adhesiveness may be related to reproductive patterns and to phylogenesis.  相似文献

The classification system of diatoms (Bacillariophyta) is based almost entirely on the organization and structure of their silica cell walls. We have discovered Miocene freshwater fossils that contain valves of two different orders within the same organism. Within frustules of the genus Ellerbeckia Crawford, a genus of the order Melosirales, are contained frustules of the genus Actinocyclus Ehrenberg, a member of the Coscinodiscales. Based on the abundance of each morphotype, they appear to be able to reproduce themselves. The ability of a single diatom taxon to express this degree of morphological variability is unprecedented. These results suggest species concepts in diatoms may be in need of review and challenge the basis of the classification system for this widely distributed and ecologically important group of organisms.  相似文献

An undescribed species of freshwater crab with a remarkable life history was studied over 2 years in areas of natural forest in the East Usambara Mountains, north-east Tanzania. It was found occupying the water-filled boles (tree holes) of several tree species at altitudes between 150 and 900 m asl, a single tree species Myrianthus holstii accounted for 26% of all trees identified as such. There was no apparent association with other freshwater bodies. The 'tree-hole crab' is largely nocturnal but will also forage by day during periods of heavy rainfall, leaving its tree hole in search of leaf-litter molluscs. Once located it carries pieces of the snail shell back to the tree hole and releases these into the water filled bole which is typically acidic. This releases calcium ions (Ca2+) into solution from the snail shell resulting in a more neutral solution (mean pH = 6.6, standard deviation (s) = 0.46, n  = 25). This act provides a source of dissolved calcium for the development of exoskeletons following ecdysis. Significant differences were found between depth ( P  = 0.01) and height ( P  = 0.05) of occupied and unoccupied water-filled tree holes. This is the first record of a crab exhibiting such behaviour in East Africa.  相似文献

The transmission of Aphanomyces infection among carriers (host females), host mortality, recovery from infection, and stages in the infection process were investigated in Boeckella dilatata (Copepoda: Calanoida) at 15°C in the laboratory. Over a 4-week period, 57.9% female B. dilatata became infected after being paired with carrier females and 3.8% lost their infection hyphae. Mortality was higher among carrier females (41%) than noncarriers (18.2%) but may be related to the age of the females. There was no difference in body size or clutch size between carrier and noncarrier females. However, host females carried clutches for shorter periods and had correspondingly longer intervals between clutches than did noncarriers. Laboratory culture studies on the euryhalinity of Bostrychia radicans Montagne and Caloglossa leprieurii (Montagne) J. Agardh from the mouth and head of the Mullica River estuary, New Jersey, revealed both species probably have ecotypes whose growth patterns correlate with the salinity regime of their habitat in nature. Significant growth differences of tetrasporelings were determined in response to four salinities (5, 15, 25, 35%c) even after acclimation periods of the tetrasporophytes from 6 mo–2 yr in laboratory culture. However, one isolate of Bostrychia and both isolates of Caloglossa also demonstrated some capability for physiological adaptation to salinity changes although this was less significant statistically than their ecotypic response. It thus appears that certain euryhaline algae may consist of ecotypes, each of which has some capacity for physiological adaptation to salinity variations.  相似文献

The strength of predation impact on recipient environments may vary among introduced populations due to their local adaptations to different prey. We examined whether functional diversification associated with morphological differences may be observed among the introduced populations of invasive bluegill sunfish Lepomis macrochirus (Perciformes, Centrarchidae) in Japan. The two examined populations are morphologically different, although they were recently derived from a common American source and colonized in different lakes. We performed a laboratory experiment wherein these populations were fed the benthic (chironomid larva) and the pelagic prey (daphnid zooplankton). The results revealed that a population colonizing in a shallower lake and foraging on benthic invertebrates in the wild had a greater impact on the benthic prey, whereas the other population colonizing in a deeper lake and foraging on crustacean zooplankton have consumed the pelagic prey more efficiently. A series of regression analyses showed that morphological differences among individuals were responsible for these population differences. The evidence obtained suggests that morphological adaptations by introduced bluegill populations enhance the strength of predation impact on a prey resource consumed in a relevant environment, but reduce the impact on the other prey. Thus, although the introduced Japanese populations were recently derived from a common ancestor, the predation impacts on the native prey community vary due to morphological adaptations to different prey.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 601–610.  相似文献

Spectral properties of cell suspensions, individual cells, and extracts of the unicellular green alga Parietochloris incisa (Reisigl) Shin Watan. grown under low light were studied. Long‐term nitrogen (N) deprivation resulted in a decrease of chloroplast volume, appearance of numerous large cytoplasmic oil bodies, and the deposition of triacylglycerols with a high proportion of arachidonic acid. Chlorophylls a and b underwent a synchronous decline, whereas carotenoids (Car) showed a relative increase. Simultaneously, significant qualitative changes in the spectral properties of P. incisa individual cells, cell extracts, and cell suspensions were observed. To a large extent, the spectral changes observed in cell suspension could be attributed to a decrease in overall pigment content, leading to a gradual weakening of the so‐called package effect and accumulation of additional amounts of Car over chl, most probably, in oil bodies. Several optical characteristics of cell suspensions could serve as sensitive indicators of N‐deficiency in P. incisa. Furthermore, the absorption ratios, A476/A676 and A650/A676, showed close correlations with the Car‐to‐chl ratio and relative arachidonic acid (AA) content, respectively. The latter makes it possible to suggest that the increase in AA percentage in P. incisa proceeds in parallel with a decrease in cell chl content, accounting for the weakening of the package effect. N‐replenishment resulted in complete recovery of cell optical properties. The possible significance of the changes in cell ultrastructure, pigments, lipids, and optical properties is discussed with special reference to the ability of algae to adapt to and survive under conditions of long‐term nutrient deficiency.  相似文献

Variation in the incidence of diapause in local populations of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) and Helicoverpa assulta (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was examined in relation to changes in photoperiod and/or temperature during the larval period. Temperate zone populations of H. assulta, a native species in temperate Japan, showed a high incidence of diapause induction when only the photoperiod was decreased during the larval period, even at favorable temperatures. This photoperiod‐dependent response may allow H. assulta to foresee the beginning of autumn well in advance in the temperate zone, where temperature conditions are severe. In contrast, temperate zone populations of H. armigera, an invasive and polyphagous species mainly distributed in the subtropics, showed a high incidence of diapause only when both photoperiod and temperature decreased, whereas subtropical populations showed a very low incidence of diapause under the same conditions. Furthermore, both temperate zone and subtropical populations of H. armigera enter diapause under constant low temperatures at short‐day photoperiod. Thus, there is geographic variation in sensitivity to diapause‐inducing stimuli (changes in photoperiod and temperature) in H. armigera. This variation may be a part of the climatic adaptation achieved by H. armigera in Japan.  相似文献
