A technique using a computer with a graphical display unit to teach students the effects of genetic drift, selection and migration is described. Both diallelic and triallelic loci are discussed. The Fokker-Planck equation is used as the mathematical model of the genetic system, and its validity as an approximation in this context is demonstrated by an investigation into selection at the ABO locus. An appendix contains a derivation from the Fokker-Planck equation of the formula used in the paper for the gene frequency distribution at a multiallelic locus in equilibrium under selection and migration.  相似文献

Accidents such as toxic spills can cause massive damage to local ecosystems and hamper the sustainable development of hazardous industries. Models that only consider regularly occurring pollution are unable to truly quantify ecological risks (ecorisks) from these industries. This work presents a methodology capable of quantifying ecorisks related to rare and extreme events such as industrial accidents. We developed a procedure that integrates information from different studies that contributes to characterize ecorisks from industrial accidents: (1) reliability analysis, (2) fate and transport modeling, (3) individual-level toxicological assessment, and (4) population modeling. The methodology is exemplified by an application to oil ship transportation to supply Brazil's Suape industrial complex. A fish population was strategically chosen to represent the ecosystem's health of Suape beach. For the critical accidental scenarios, their frequencies of occurrence were estimated and the space–time evolution of oil simulated. The ecorisks were quantified in terms of time and population probability of fish extinction, categorized and compared against a no-accident scenario. The total ecorisks from all scenarios were presented as a FN curve, where N is the average number of deaths in the population and F the cumulative frequency of accidents with potential to cause N or more deaths.  相似文献

The Janzen‐Connell hypothesis proposes that plant interactions with host‐specific antagonists can impair the fitness of locally abundant species and thereby facilitate coexistence. However, insects and pathogens that associate with multiple hosts may mediate exclusion rather than coexistence. We employ a simulation model to examine the effect of enemy host breadth on plant species richness and defence community structure, and to assess expected diversity maintenance in example systems. Only models in which plant enemy similarity declines rapidly with defence similarity support greater species richness than models of neutral drift. In contrast, a wide range of enemy host breadths result in spatial dispersion of defence traits, at both landscape and local scales, indicating that enemy‐mediated competition may increase defence‐trait diversity without enhancing species richness. Nevertheless, insect and pathogen host associations in Panama and Papua New Guinea demonstrate a potential to enhance plant species richness and defence‐trait diversity comparable to strictly specialised enemies.  相似文献

Children randomised in the neonatal period to high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) or conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) in the United Kingdom Oscillation study (UKOS) had superior lung function at 11 to 14 years of age. During HFOV, much smaller tidal volumes, but a higher mean airway distending pressure is delivered, hence, a possible explanation for a volume dependent effect on long term lung function could be an increase in inflammation in response to higher tidal volumes and strains. We tested that hypothesis by assessing interleukin-6 (IL-6) and -8 (IL-8) release from A549 alveolar analogue cells following biaxial mechanical strain applied at 0.5 Hz occurring during conditions mimicking strain during CMV (5–20% strain) and conditions mimicking strain during HFOV (17.5% ± 2.5% strain) for up to 4 h. Cyclic strain of 5–20%, occurring during CMV, increased levels of both IL-6 and IL-8 compared to unstrained controls, while 17.5% ± 2.5% strain, occurring during HFOV, was associated with significantly lower levels of IL-6 (46.31 ± 2.66 versus 56.79 ± 3.73 pg/mL) and IL-8 (1340.2 ± 74.9 versus 2522 ± 248 pg/mL) secretion compared to conditions occurring during CMV at four hours. These results may provide a possible explanation for the superior lung function in 11–14-year-old children who had been supported in the neonatal period by HFOV.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The preponderance of our knowledge concerning hearing in the Cetacea has come from psychophysical studies. The most widely used alternative to psychophysical studies are neurophysiological studies utilizing auditory evoked potentials (AEPs). Due in part to the hypertrophy of auditory structures exhibited by the Cetacea, AEPs are highly robust and rapidly and easily obtained. Moreover, because AEPs reflect the synchronized activity of large neuronal assemblies, they offer a high level window onto auditory processing and allow for across-species comparison of responses.

Recent studies utilizing AEP techniques have demonstrated that the cetaceans have extremely high temporal resolution with integration times in the order of 300 msec. Remarkably, these animals also exhibit extremely sharp frequency tuning with auditory filters having Q10 of 20–30.  相似文献

目的 基于生物阻抗谱(bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy,BIS)技术,提出一种免标记的生物细胞活性实时检测方法。该方法依据不同浓度、生理、病理状态下细胞组织的电学特性差异来判断细胞是否具有活性,以协助医师在临床手术中快速精准定位患者烫伤组织并实现有效切除。方法 使用具有活性的斑马鱼胚胎干细胞来模拟人体烫伤组织,采用生物阻抗谱技术来鉴别细胞组织的生理状态。结果 在不同状态下,细胞的阻抗幅值变化有显著的差异,可以从中发现同等浓度下活性细胞的阻抗幅值比死亡细胞平均高出17.25%,活性细胞发生弛豫频率的时间也比死亡细胞早25%。结论 实验数据表明,生物阻抗谱法能有效区分胚胎干细胞的两类生理状态;从聚类区域中可以看出,BIS检测法具有明显的细胞活性及浓度区分能力,理论上能够快速地协助医师完成对患者烫伤组织检测。  相似文献
