Gene flow between genetically distinct plant populations can have significant evolutionary consequences. It can increase genetic diversity, create novel gene combinations, and transfer adaptations from one population to another. This study addresses the roles of frequency-dependent selection and mating system in gene exchange between two subspecies of Gilia capitata (Polemoniaceae). Long-distance migrants are likely to be rare in new habitats, and the importance of immigrant frequency to fitness, gene exchange, and ultimately introgression, has not been explored. To test for the importance of frequency in migration, a field experiment was conducted in which artificial populations (arrays) composed of different mixtures of the two subspecies were placed in the home habitats of both. Female function (seed production) and a portion of male function (hybridization rate) were compared for the two subspecies to assess the potential for gene exchange and introgression between them. Individual fitness (through both hybridization and seed production) for the inland subspecies varied with its frequency as an immigrant at the coastal site. Rare immigrants produced fewer seeds and fathered fewer hybrid offspring. In contrast, both forms of reproductive function were frequency independent for the coastal subspecies when it was an immigrant at the inland site. Seed production was high and insensitive to frequency, and immigrants from the coast never successfully fertilized the inland subspecies' seeds. To control for the effects of frequency-dependent pollinator behavior in the field, hand crosses were performed in the greenhouse using a range of pollen mixtures. The greenhouse experiment demonstrated that cross-fertilization is possible in only one direction, that cross-pollination in the other direction is only partially successful, and that pollen from the coastal subspecies has a strong negative effect on seed production by the inland subspecies. Experimental pollen supplementation in the field verified both the unilateral incompatibility and the negative effect of coastal pollen on inland plant seed production observed in the greenhouse. Contrasts between field array and greenhouse results suggest that pollinator behavior and other ecological factors act to exaggerate reproductive barriers between the two subspecies. In this system, immigrant frequency interacts with reproductive biology and pollinator ecology to enhance gene flow between the populations in one direction, while restricting gene establishment and introgression in the other direction.  相似文献

The terpenoid composition of three fossil resins from macrofossils of Cretaceous and Tertiary conifers has been analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The mono-, sesqui- and diterpenoids which have been identified in the resin extracts are derived from precursors produced by the respective source plants and may be used as chemosystematic markers when compared with terpenoids in extant conifers. Sesquiterpenoids (cedrene, cuparene, cadinanes) and phenolic diterpenoids (ferruginol and derivatives) are the major components in Cupressospermum saxonicum Mai (Miocene). The terpenoid characteristics strongly support a relationship to the Cupressaceae s. str. The resin of Doliostrobus taxiformis (Sternberg) Kva ek (Eocene) consists of abietane and pimarane type resin acids accompanied by minor amounts of phenolic diterpenoids (ferruginol, hinokiol). According to morphological and anatomical characteristics, D. taxiformis was previously compared to both, extant Araucariaceae and Cupressaceae s.l., but the terpenoid pattern of the resin now supports a relationship to the Cupressaceae s.l. rather than to Araucariaceae. Degraded diterpenoids of the abietane type are the major compounds in the extract of Tritaenia linkii (Roemer) Mägdefrau et Rudolf (Lower Cretaceous) indicating considerable oxidative alteration of the resin. Since the terpenoids in the resin of T. linkii are highly degraded or belong to the common abietane class, the leaves cannot be assigned or compared to any modern family based on their terpenoid composition. The presence of ferruginol probably excludes pinaceous affinities. Terpenoids proved to be valuable chemosystematic markers for fossil conifers once they are adequately preserved. The analysis of resin extracts by GC–MS is a suitable tool for the investigation of soluble compounds in fossil plants.  相似文献

Comprehending ecological dynamics requires not only knowledge of modern communities but also detailed reconstructions of ecosystem history. Ancient DNA (aDNA) metabarcoding allows biodiversity responses to major climatic change to be explored at different spatial and temporal scales. We extracted aDNA preserved in fossil rodent middens to reconstruct late Quaternary vegetation dynamics in the hyperarid Atacama Desert. By comparing our paleo‐informed millennial record with contemporary observations of interannual variations in diversity, we show local plant communities behave differentially at different timescales. In the interannual (years to decades) time frame, only annual herbaceous expand and contract their distributional ranges (emerging from persistent seed banks) in response to precipitation, whereas perennials distribution appears to be extraordinarily resilient. In contrast, at longer timescales (thousands of years) many perennial species were displaced up to 1,000 m downslope during pluvial events. Given ongoing and future natural and anthropogenically induced climate change, our results not only provide baselines for vegetation in the Atacama Desert, but also help to inform how these and other high mountain plant communities may respond to fluctuations of climate in the future.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial changes of ten conifer genera that are endemic to East Asia were analyzed based on fossil data from humid temperate forests in the Japanese Islands and Korean Peninsula to elucidate the phytogeographic history, and to understand differences between those genera eliminated from the Japanese Islands and those that remained extant. All these genera, except for Thujopsis, have existed in the area since the Paleogene and remained in the Japanese islands after initial separation from the continent at the early–middle Miocene. Fossil representatives of locally extinct six genera have tendencies to adapt to wider ranges of climatic conditions than their modern relatives. Metasequoia, Glyptostrobus, and Taiwania began to change their distributions since the late Miocene possibly through habitat partitioning. Keteleeria, Pseudolarix, and Cunninghamia appeared to have expanded their habitat toward warmer conditions during the mid‐Miocene Climatic Optimum and then became restricted to warmer forest vegetation by the end of Pliocene. Overall changes in their distribution can be explained by climatic effects. On the contrary, three genera endemic to Japan (Sciadopitys, Cryptomeria, and Thujopsis) followed clearly different trends from the others. Cryptomeria and Thujopsis were especially adapted to cooler‐temperate climate and they retained their habitat areas in the northern part of Japan. During the late Miocene–Pliocene, the islands connected with the Eurasian continent again, which probably acted as a corridor for warm‐adapted genera to disperse southwest. Current data suggest that ecological requirements of each genus might be essential to determine whether they could survive on the Japanese Islands.  相似文献

A modern pollen rain study from the central Andes region of South America   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Aim To provide a greater understanding of the modern pollen rain for the central Andes region of South America, thus laying the groundwork for future pollen studies and the derivation of pollen‐climate transfer functions and response surfaces. Location Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Methods Standard palynological techniques for surface soil sampling and discriminant analysis. Results Statistical analysis of the 40 surface samples revealed four palynologically distinct assemblages: (1) the Yungas on the eastern slopes of the Andes; (2) the puna grasslands of the Altiplano; (3) the Coastal Deserts to the west of the Andes; and (4) the Southern Bolivian Highlands. Main conclusions The Yungas group is characterized by high percentages of Urticaceae/Moraceae pollen and fern spores along with trace amounts of pollen from common zoophilous lowland taxa such as Piperaceae, Bignoniaceae and Malpighiaceae. The puna assemblage of the Altiplano is characterized by the dominance of grass (Poaceae) in combination with moderate frequencies of Asteraceae pollen, which tend to increase slightly towards the southern (drier) locations of the Altiplano. Lower percentages of grass pollen and the greater prevalence of Asteraceae, Solanaceae, and the Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae families define the coastal deserts to the west of the Andes. Samples taken from the Southern Bolivian Highlands are characterized by the dominance of Solanaceae in the area, in combination with the pollen of other xerophytic taxa.  相似文献

Abstract:  Here we report an eggshell in Dominican amber, representing the first vertebrate egg in any amber deposit. The eggshell is compared with present-day eggs of lizards, snails and birds. Based on the surface structure and type of shell breakage, it appears that the most likely candidate is a bird, and with that consideration, an avian group that produces eggs similar to the fossil in shape, size and colouration is the Trochilidae (hummingbirds). Several possible explanations of how the fossil could be preserved in amber are provided. If indeed a hummingbird was involved, this discovery would represent the first New World record of a fossil trochilid.  相似文献

The airborne Penicillium spp. and total airborne fungal spore concentration was investigated in the grain shops of Nagpur city, India, using a volumetric Hi‐Air sampler system Mark II (Hi Media Laboratories Ltd., India). The mycotoxins were analysed from the Penicillium isolates obtained from the seeds by thin layer chromatography.

The mean concentration of the total fungi isolated from different grain shops ranged from 7.8×102 to 1.1×103 CFU/m3. The mean concentration of Penicillium isolated from the air of grain shops ranged from 8.6×101 CFU/m3 (10.8%) to 1.7×102 CFU/m3 (19.9%). Among the 13 species of Penicillium which were isolated, P. citrinum Thom was the most prevalent species (24.2%), followed by P. oxalicum Currie & Thom (16.5), P. digitatum Saccardo (8.9%), P. janthinellum Biourge (8.7%), P. funiculosum Thom (8.3%), P. chrysogenum Thom (6.4%), P. purpurogenum Stoll (6.2%), P. brevicompactum Dierckx (4.8%), P. frequentans Westling (4.2%), P. italicum Wehmer (3.8%), P. rubrum Stoll (3.4%), P. expansum Link (2.9%) and P. cyclopium Westling (1.6%).

Penicillium species were also isolated from seeds such as wheat, maize, soybean, and groundnut. The mycotoxins roquefortin C, citrinin, rubratoxin B, cyclopiazonic acid, verrucosidin, mitorubrinic acid and two unknown metabolites were isolated from Penicillium isolates.  相似文献
