We tested the hypothesis that the energetics of swimming in a flume accurately represent the costs of various spontaneous movements using empirical relationships between fish swimming costs, weight, and speed for three swimming patterns: (1) 'forced swimming' corresponded to movements adopted by fish forced to swim against a unidirectional current of constant velocity; (2) 'directed swimming' was defined as quasi-rectilinear movements executed at relatively constant speeds in a stationary body of water and (3) 'routine swimming' was characterized by marked changes in swimming direction and speed. Weight and speed explained between 76% (routine swimming) and 80% (forced swimming) of net swimming cost variability. Net costs associated with different swimming patterns were compared using ratios of model predictions (swimming cost ratio; SCR) for various weight and speed combinations. Routine swimming was the most expensive swimming pattern (SCR for routine and forced swimming =6.4 to 14.0) followed by directed (SCR for directed and forced swimming =0.9 to 2.8), and forced swimming. The magnitude of the difference between the net costs of forced and spontaneous swimming increases with movement complexity and decreases as fish weight increases.  相似文献

While empathy is a century‐old psychological concept, its study in non‐human animals has become the focus of much recent scientific interest, as it promises to provide the clues to understand the evolutionary origins of our social and moral nature. A review of the comparative study of empathy is thus timely to complement and constrain anthropocentric views, and to integrate current findings. However, this is not an easy task. The study of animal empathy has developed using different paradigms, different concepts of the phenomena involved, and the absence of a systematic program. Herein, we carry out a comprehensive review of the literature on complex forms of empathy in non‐human animals: sympathetic concern and empathic perspective‐taking. In particular, we focus on consolation and targeted helping, as the best examples of each category. In so doing, we try to shed light on the current debate concerning whether these phenomena are exclusively human traits. First, we try to clarify the terminology and taxonomy of forms of empathy, providing operative criteria for these phenomena that are applicable to both human and non‐human animals. Second, we discuss whether the available evidence qualifies such behaviour as empathic. Third, we aim to provide an integrative view of the field, clarifying the challenges and conditions to satisfy. We also hope to highlight the importance of the study of these processes for elucidating the evolutionary history of this capacity across the animal kingdom.  相似文献

In species in which individuals alternate between mating strategies, males may respond to elevated predation risk by switching from conspicuous courtship displays to less risky or more profitable sneaky mating attempts. As a consequence, in such species female choice is likely to be undermined more frequently in relatively dangerous localities. We tested this prediction using the guppy, a species of fish in which individual males alternate between courtship (solicited) and forced (unsolicited) copulations according to prevailing levels of predation. We collected females at late stages of gestation from four high- and four low-predation populations in Trinidad and examined them for the presence of sperm in their gonoducts. Due to the patterns of sperm storage in guppies, sperm found in the gonoducts of such late-cycle females can only arise from unsolicited copulations. We anticipated that because female guppies are subject to greater sexual harassment in the form of forced mating attempts in high-risk localities, a higher proportion of females in these populations would contain sperm in their gonoducts arising from recent unsolicited copulations. Contrary to this prediction, only one of the four paired comparisons (from the Quaré River) revealed a significant difference in the proportion of females recently inseminated through forced copulations. The paired comparisons for the remaining three rivers revealed no significant differences in the proportion of females with recoverable sperm in their gonoducts. However, overall, we found that 44.5% (±4.3 SE) of females had sperm in their gonoduct arising from sneaky mating, a figure three times higher than previously reported for this species. One of the most important as well as most awesome achievements of modern biotechnology is the possibility of cloning human embryonic stem cells, if not human beings themselves. The possible revolutionary role of such stem cells in curative, preventive and enhancement medicine has been voiced and chorused around the globe. However, the question of the moral status of embryonic stem cells has not been clearly and unequivocally answered. Taking inspiration from the African adage that 'the hand that reaches beneath the incubating hen is not guiltless', I attempt answering this question, from the background of traditional African moral sensibility and sensitivity. I reach the following conclusions. Stem cells in themselves do not have human status and therefore lack moral worth/value. Embryos do have human status and a morally significant line cannot be drawn between human embryos and other human beings. What is morally at stake in stem cell research is therefore the question of the source of derivation or generation of the cells, not of the cells as such.  相似文献

Phosphodiesterase‐1b (Pde1b) is highly expressed in striatum, dentate gyrus, CA3 and substantia nigra. In a new Floxed Pde1b × CreCMV global knockout (KO) mouse model, we show an immobility‐resistance phenotype that recapitulates that found in constitutive Pde1b KO mice. We use this new mouse model to show that the resistance to acute stress‐induced depression‐like phenotype is not the product of changes in locomotor activity or reactivity to other stressors (learned helplessness, novelty suppressed feeding or dexamethasone suppression), and is not associated with anhedonia using the sucrose preference test. Using tamoxifen inducible Cre, we show that the immobility‐resistant phenotype depends on the age of induction. The effect is present when Pde1b is Reduced from conception, P0 or P32, but not if reduced as adults (P60). We also mapped regional brain expression of PDE1B protein and of the Cre driver. These data add to the suggestion that PDE1B may be a target for drug development with therapeutic potential in depression alone or in combination with existing antidepressants.  相似文献

Mouse fibroblasts (B-6) were cultured on agar-coated dishes. After cells grew for 2–3 generations relatively rapidly in suspension, they began to grow very slowly (stationary phase). Electron microscopic studies showed that cells in a stationary phase developed intracellular organella: membranous structures (endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus) became manifest and the number of mitochondria increased. The specific activities of succinic-cytochrome c reductase and 5′-nucleotidase were three and five times higher, respectively, than those of cells on the dish.  相似文献

mtDNA作为分子标记的广泛应用,使得系统进化、生物地理、群体遗传、人类学及法医鉴定等领域的研究得到前所未有的发展.但随着对线粒体基因组遗传特性的了解不断加深,以mtDNA作为分子标记的潜在问题便逐渐暴露出来.本文从7个方面对mtDNA应用的可靠性问题进行了讨论,并对今后线粒体基因的应用前景做了初步分析。 Abstract:With some special features,mtDNA is used widely as molecular marker in the fields of systematic evolution,biogeography,population genetics,anthropology,and forensic medicine.However,more and more evidences that challenge the traditional concept on mtDNA features re found increasingly.In this paper,seven facts that could affect the reliability of mtDNA used as molecular marker are reviewed,then the perspective on application of mtDNA is discussed.  相似文献

We used the largest DNA-based phylogeny of flowering plants to date to evaluate the importance of energy vs. past climate change in predicting global patterns in diversification. Relative diversification rates increased towards the equator, suggesting that differences in per-lineage net diversification may be an important component of the latitudinal diversity gradient. The amplitude of Quaternary climate oscillations experienced by families explained variation in diversification equally well compared to contemporary energy measures, and energy and climate change measures were intercorrelated, making it difficult to reject either as a causal mechanism. Many putative mechanisms linking diversification to energy availability do not apply to plants, whereas the climate change mechanism has more support. We also present the first global map of angiosperm diversification, showing that, after correcting for family range-size, tropical diversification rates were fastest for clades currently in regions with high endemic species richness outside the main lowland rainforest areas.  相似文献

针对气候变化和城市化对富饶的三角洲地区带来的洪涝风险、生态、社会—文化价值流失等威胁,提出将三角洲城市化进程视为一系列具有独立动态特征和速率变化的复杂社会—生态系统(子系统),急需为保障该类型区域的可持续发展提供空间战略,以协助修复系统漏洞并增强应对自然和人工威胁的能力,以珠江三角洲为例,针对城市化进程中三角洲区域的适应性城市转型,提出基于景观的区域设计方法。通过对自然和城市景观要素转型性循环的各类动态变化进行评估,得到生态动力型区域设计战略,为城市化进程中的自然和社会—文化发展提供更多机遇。提出保障水安全和全纳性社会—生态设计的适应性转型视角。  相似文献
