The use of anatomically accurate finite element (FE) models of the human foot in research studies has increased rapidly in recent years. Uses for FE foot models include advancing knowledge of orthotic design, shoe design, ankle–foot orthoses, pathomechanics, locomotion, plantar pressure, tissue mechanics, plantar fasciitis, joint stress and surgical interventions. Similar applications but for clinical use on a per-patient basis would also be on the rise if it were not for the high costs associated with developing patient-specific anatomical foot models. High costs arise primarily from the expense and challenges of acquiring anatomical data via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) and reconstructing the three-dimensional models. The proposed solution morphs detailed anatomy from skin surface geometry and anatomical landmarks of a generic foot model (developed from CT or MRI) to surface geometry and anatomical landmarks acquired from an inexpensive structured light scan of a foot. The method yields a patient-specific anatomical foot model at a fraction of the cost of standard methods. Average error for bone surfaces was 2.53 mm for the six experiments completed. Highest accuracy occurred in the mid-foot and lowest in the forefoot due to the small, irregular bones of the toes. The method must be validated in the intended application to determine if the resulting errors are acceptable.  相似文献

Marine mussels (Mytilus trossulus) attach to a wide variety of surfaces underwater using a protein adhesive that is cured by the surrounding seawater environment. In this study, the influence of environmental post-processing on adhesion strength was investigated by aging adhesive plaques in a range of seawater pH conditions. Plaques took 8–12 days to achieve full strength at pH 8, nearly doubling in adhesion strength (+94%) and increasing the work required to dislodge (+59%). Holding plaques in low pH conditions prevented strengthening, causing the material to tear more frequently under tension. The timescale of strengthening is consistent with the conversion of DOPA to DOPA-quinone, a pH dependent process that promotes cross-linking between adhesive proteins. The precise arrangement of DOPA containing proteins away from the adhesive-substratum interface emphasizes the role that structural organization can have on function, an insight that could lead to the design of better synthetic adhesives and metal-coordinating hydrogels.  相似文献

Entoprocta is a group of mostly cryptic, benthic invertebrates with a sedentary lifestyle. Here, we investigate the morphology of the entoproct foot, which is an important structure in attachment and locomotion. We describe the foot structure of four solitary entoprocts, Loxosoma monilis, Loxosomella stomatophora, Loxocorone allax, and Loxomitra mizugamaensis, by means of light and transmission electron microscopy. Gland cells containing secretory granules were found in the foot of all the four species. In L. monilis, the gland cells densely paved the underside of the disc‐shaped foot, but no duct or groove was found. In L. stomatophora and L. allax, a foot gland was present at the frontal end of a foot groove. The foot gland was a solid cell mass in the former species but a sac‐like structure in the latter. Two types of groove accessory cells were recognized in both species; groove bulge cells (GBCs) showed large cytoplasmic bulges extending into the groove lumen, while groove microvillus cells have microvillus mats in the lateral wall of the groove. The bulges of GBCs in L. stomatophora are slender and attached to one another with desmosomes, forming appendages that extend down to the substratum, hinting at their contribution to attachment and locomotion. The bulges in L. allax form large swellings that fill the groove lumen and are connected to the surrounding cells with hemidesmosomes. In the liberated buds of L. mizugamaensis, tripartite gland cell masses were found at the basal end of the stalk, but no groove was found. A small invagination, which may be the opening of the gland, was found at the center of the foot tip, where the liberated buds attach themselves to the substratum and then metamorphose into adults. Anomalie m.p. is a spontaneous and heritable hindlimb abnormality described earlier. Twenty years later, Pleurodeles waltl larvae from the strain bearing anomalie m.p. and reared at room temperature or at 30°C, expressed abnormalities (ectrodactylia, hemimelia, ectromelia). A morphological study of all the hindlimbs and an analysis of the hindlimb skeleton of samples from the experimental animals confirmed that most of the skeletal malformations were identical to those previously reported and affected the disto-proximal and prepostaxial pattern of the hindlimb. Analysis of the effects of rearing temperature on the expression of anomalie m.p. showed that the effects varied according to the developmental period at which the heat treatment was applied; the sooner the heat treatment began, the more numerous and more various were the degrees of severity of the malformations. Moreover, heat treatment induced the expression of two additional malformations not yet described: the first one, named 'reversed knee joint', was characterized by a reversal of the knee joint, and the second one, named 'twisted foot', by a downward twisting of the foot. The epigenetic effects of rearing at 30°C on hindlimb development are discussed with regard to the differentiation or patterning.  相似文献

The goal was to compare static magnetic field (SMF, generated by Nd2–Fe14–B magnets) vasodilator capacity with verapamil (VER, a potent, clinically verified Ca2+ channel-blocking agent), aimed to assess SMF implementation in conditions with vascular ischemia. Skin microcirculatory blood flow measured by microphotoelectric plethysmogram was recorded in conscious rabbits after 40 min of 0.25 T SMF regional exposure to ear microvascular net (SMF-Vas, n = 20), or 0.35 T to carotid baroreceptors (SMF-Car, n = 14), and compared with that after 30 min VER intravenous infusion (20 µg/kg/min, n = 20). The principal finding is that SMF-Vas, SMF-Car, and VER significantly increased microcirculatory blood flow by 17.9 ± 9.58%, 22.6 ± 11.11%, and 30.5 ± 14.06% (mean ± SEM) respectively, and there was no significant difference between all three treatments (P = 0.986). Microvascular dilation was accompanied by significant decrease of blood pressure in VER and SMF-Car cases. The decrease of arterial baroreflex sensitivity in VER contrasted with its increase in SMF-Car, coupled with improved vessel sensitivity to nitric oxide (NO) dilatory effect. This suggests that SMF can have a strong vasodilator property tailored to address diabetic, mainly NO-deficient, neural, and myogenic microvascular dysfunction, especially employing both SMFs’ vasodilation synergy. Using four physical characteristics of 394 adult male individuals in the Sichuan Province of China — stature, length of thigh, length of leg and length of foot, a series of linear regression equations and ternary regression equations have been established. Meanwhile three stepwise regression equations also have been established including a quarternary regression equation. Generally speaking, the established multiple equations in this study should be applied as much as possible, where there are two or three independent variables, because they predict more effectively in the individual identification of forensic practice.  相似文献
