Ongoing expansion of large-scale agriculture critically threatens natural habitats and the pollination services they offer. Creating patches with high plant diversity within farmland is commonly suggested as a measure to benefit pollinators. However, farmers rarely adopt such practice, instead removing naturally occurring plants (weeds). By combining pollinator exclusion experiments with analysis of honeybee behaviour and flower-visitation webs, we found that the presence of weeds allowed pollinators to persist within sunflower fields, maximizing the benefits of the remaining patches of natural habitat to productivity of this large-scale crop. Weed diversity increased flower visitor diversity, hence ameliorating the measured negative effects of isolation from natural habitat. Although honeybees were the most abundant visitors, diversity of flower visitors enhanced honeybee movement, being the main factor influencing productivity. Conservation of natural patches combined with promoting flowering plants within crops can maximize productivity and, therefore, reduce the need for cropland expansion, contributing towards sustainable agriculture. 相似文献

Callus cultures of Ajuga reptans flowers produced a complex mixture of cyanidin- and delphinidin-based pigments, of which
more than 90% were acylated. The anthocyanin composition varied little during one growth period. During a time span of 5 years
no new anthocyanin classes appeared. Quantitative differences in anthocyanin composition between the callus lines and during
a 5 year time span were more pronounced. In general, the accumulation of delphinidin-based anthocyanins decreased. The percentage
of acylated anthocyanins was stable in time. The accumulation of metabolically evolved anthocyanins (5′-substituted and acylated)
decreased during passage from solid culture to liquid culture. The accumulation of acylated anthocyanins was influenced by
the type of aeration in liquid cultures.

Multielement analysis was performed on bone samples extracted from the femora of 39 adults from three mortuary sites (Johns Mound, Santa Catalina de Guale, and Santa Catalina de Guale de Santa Meria) and time periods (late preagricultural, early contact, and late contact) in the Georgia Bight. This study was used to investigate whether elemental analysis would support or contradict other lines of data regarding diets and dietary change previously generated for the region. The data are in agreement with an earlier interpretation, based on stable isotopes, that dietary maize increases through time but fails to support the idea that marine resources decreased in importance. Rather, it appears that the wild plant food component of the diets decreases as maize increases in importance; throughout the sequence, marine resources comprise a significant portion of the diets. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

A natural lactic fermentation of mixtures of water and whole flour of either maize or high-tannin sorghum was obtained either before or after cooking to a weaning gruel: The preparations had a final pH of about 3.8 (range 3.67 to 4.00) and a ratio of lactic acid to acetic acid of 91 (w/w). The growth of added (about 107 c.f.u./g gruel) Gram-negative intestinal pathogenic bacteria, enterotoxigenicEscherichia coli, Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella flexneri andSalmonella typhimurium, was strongly inhibited in the sour gruels, and the effect could primarily be explained by the low pH caused by the formation of lactic and acetic acids during the fermentation process. Of the added Gram-positive bacteria,Bacillus cereus andStaphylococcus aureus showed similar inhibited growth up to 7h after inoculation in the sour gruels. The strain ofStaphylococcus, however, showed only a continued reduction in growth in the fermented gruel samples, which had a viable lactic bacteria culture indicating the presence of a bacteriocin. This implies that a low pH (< 4.0) alone is not sufficient to sustain the inhibition of the growth ofStaphylococcus aureus. The food habits of the endangered giant water bug, Lethocerus deyrolli, were studied in the rice fields of Nose, in the north of Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Field observations revealed that frogs were the most important prey item. Frogs represented 86.4% and 78.6% in the diet of L. deyrolli in spring and summer, respectively. Among seven species of three families (Hylidae, Rhacophoridae, and Ranidae) exploited by L. deyrolli, the most important food item was adult Hyla japonica in spring and juvenile Rana nigromaculta in summer. Fish and aquatic arthropods were not considered important foods for L. deyrolli. The frog‐dependent food habits indicate that the recovery and conservation of frogs should be prioritized to protect L. deyrolli from extinction. 相似文献

Aims: Listeria monocytogenesΔgadD1 and ΔlisK mutants display enhanced and reduced sensitivity, respectively, to the food preservative nisin in laboratory media. However, the behaviour of these strains in a nisin‐containing food has not been assessed. Here we use cottage cheese as a model food to address this issue. Materials and Results: Antibiotic‐resistant forms of the wild‐type and mutant strains were employed to investigate the behaviour of multiple strains in a single food sample, thereby eliminating the problem of intersample variation. Using this approach, it was established that percentage survival of the ΔlisK mutant was greater than the parent strain in the absence of nisin and that this relative difference became even more dramatic in cottage cheese supplemented with nisin. The numbers of the ΔgadD1 mutant decreased more rapidly than the parent in cottage cheese without nisin, but surprisingly this trend was reversed in nisin‐supplemented cheese. Upon the addition of 10 mmol l?1 monosodium glutamate, a substrate for the glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) system, the wild‐type LO28 strain regained its relative advantage over ΔgadD1. Conclusions: Care needs to be taken when predicting the behaviour of mutants of L. monocytogenes with altered resistance to nisin in food as experiments in laboratory media are not always a good indicator of how the strains will behave in such food environments. 1. Laboratory experiments were used to study the feeding, growth and reproduction of five daphnids in mixtures of a toxic cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, and a green alga, Scenedesmus acutus. The mixtures included 0%, 20%, 50%, 80% and 100% Microcystis with a total food concentration of 0.5 mg C L??1 in each treatment. The feeding rate was measured after 1 and 24 h of acclimatization to the mixtures. 2. Toxic Microcystis inhibited feeding in all the species, but they exhibited an unexpected diversity and complexity in the pattern of feeding inhibition. Daphnia magna exhibited the strongest inhibition of feeding after 1 h of exposure to toxic food, but had substantially recovered after 24 h in the same mixtures. This pattern of inhibition and recovery may balance the benefits of reduced ingestion of toxin with the disadvantage of a reduced energy intake. 3. All five daphnids grew quickly in the Scenedesmus control, whereas growth and reproduction declined with an increasing proportion of the toxic alga in the diet. Daphnia pulicaria showed the least inhibition of growth and reproduction, D. pulex showed the strongest inhibition and the three remaining species exhibited intermediate sensitivity. 4. Estimates of gross growth efficiency (GGE; growth/ingestion) provided a means for discriminating between the effects of feeding inhibition and direct toxicity on zooplankton growth. Daphnia pulex exhibited a sharp decline in GGE, suggesting that growth inhibition was a result of both feeding inhibition and direct toxicity. In contrast, D. magna exhibited a nearly constant GGE, indicating that feeding inhibition accounted for its decline in growth. However, two Daphnia species (i.e. D. pulicaria and D. galeata) exhibited improbable increases in GGE with toxic cyanobacteria, suggesting that their feeding rates were underestimated. Growth assays with sensitive and resistant zooplankton species are proposed for testing the potential impacts toxic cyanobacteria in lakes. 相似文献
