Abstract
Broad scale survey distributions of fish are dominated by some extremely high catches. With a novel survey design we resolved
the small-scale fish distribution in the spatio-temporal vicinity of these extreme hauls and showed that in the North Sea
they generally do not occur in isolation. An additional case study where stomach contents of fish predators were analyzed
revealed that they actually indicate aggregations of piscivorous fish predators on prey aggregations. We show that the predation
impact can reach immense dimensions, an aggregation of more than 50 million juvenile cod (Gadus morhua) was entirely wiped out in 5 days by predatory whiting (Merlangius merlangus), aggregating on these juveniles in an area of approximately 18 km2. The consumption of only 32 hot spots of similar magnitude as observed in our study adds up to the average size of an incoming
North Sea cod year class. These findings support the hypothesis of predation as the major source of mortality in young-of-the-year
demersal fish species and questions the generality of fish aggregation as an effective anti-predator strategy. This study
highlights the system-wide structuring force of small-scale predation hot spots and further points to the importance of a
more realistic implementation of local high-intensity predation events in food web models.

Primates tend to prefer specific plant foods, and primate home ranges may contain only a subset of food species present in an area. Thus, primate feeding strategies should be sensitive to the phenology of specific species encountered within the home range in addition to responding to larger scale phenomena such as seasonal changes in rainfall or temperature. We studied three groups of Javan gibbons (Hylobates moloch) in the Gunung Halimun‐Salak National Park, Indonesia from April 2008 to March 2009 and used general linear mixed models (GLMM) and a model selection procedure to investigate the effects of variation in fruit and flower availability on gibbon behavior. Preferred foods were defined as foods that are overselected relative to their abundance, while important food species were those that comprised >5% of feeding time. All important species were also preferred. Season and measurements of flower and fruit availability affected fruit‐feeding time, daily path lengths (DPL), and dietary breadth. Models that included the availability of preferred foods as independent variables generally showed better explanatory power than models that used overall fruit or flower availability. For one group, fruit and preferred fruit abundance had the strongest effects on diets and DPL in the models selected, while another group was more responsive to changes in flower availability. Temporal variation in plant part consumption was not correlated in neighboring groups. Our results suggest that fine‐scale local factors are important determinants of gibbon foraging strategies. Am. AIM: To assess the effect of different foods, which have been implicated or not in cases of listeriosis, on the in vitro virulence-associated phenotype level of different Listeria monocytogenes strains. METHODS AND RESULTS: The virulence-associated phenotype level of L. monocytogenes was studied with the in vitro cell test based on a plaque-forming assay with a human adenocarcinoma cell line (HT-29) monolayer. Three strains of L. monocytogenes were grown in preparations (homogenate, 1-mum filtrate or 0.2-mum filtrate) of different food extracts ['rillettes' (potted minced pork), milk, raw salmon and cold-smoked salmon] or in a control medium, brain heart infusion (BHI). The bacterial suspensions grown in food extracts or in BHI at 37 degrees C were diluted with their growth medium (food extract or BHI) or with minimum essential medium before seeding on confluent HT-29 cell monolayers. Filtration of food extracts had no significant effect on the plaque numbers formed by the bacteria. A significant decrease in the plaque numbers was noted for the three strains when they grew in the rillettes extracts, compared with the other food extracts and BHI. The levels of in vitro virulence-associated phenotype of the strains after growth in the rillettes extract were similar to or lower than that of the hypovirulent internal reference strain L. monocytogenes 442. After growth in milk and cold-smoked salmon, the impact on virulence-associated phenotype depended on the strain. In contrast, plaque-forming assay indicated increased virulence-associated phenotype when the strains were switched from a nutrient-rich medium (food extract or BHI) to a minimum essential medium. CONCLUSIONS: In vitro virulence-associated phenotype level of the studied strains grown in BHI or cold-smoked salmon was the same as the control virulent strain EGD. In contrast, the nutrients present in rillettes may therefore substantially reduce the number of plaques but not the growth of L. monocytogenes. The utilization of minimum essential medium as diluent attenuates changes the effect of the food extract on virulence-associated phenotype in vitro. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: In the experimental design of this study, we showed that the nature of the food could affect the in vitro virulence-associated phenotype level of L. monocytogenes. 相似文献

The North Sea, one of the most productive of the earth's seas and oceans, is also surrounded by some of earth's most densely
populated and heavily industrialized regions. A growing number of signals are being received which indicate that this valuable
ecosystem is increasingly under stress. This has generated a corresponding increase in concern over the steps to be taken
to protect the North Sea. While there are divergent views on what constitutes an ‘ideal’ North Sea, there is a general recognition
that any decisions that are made should be based on a good understanding of this ecosystem. The intention of this paper is
to give an overview of what is presently known, and to identify areas where more studies are needed. A brief summary of the
hydrography and the biota of the North Sea is given. Biotic and abiotic structure justify partitioning the North Sea into
three ecologically different regions: southern, central, and northern. For the most part, neither the top predators,e.g. marine birds and mammals, nor the macroalgae and sea grasses are included in this overview. 相似文献

氯丙醇酯是国际上广泛关注的食品加工过程污染物,其水解产物氯丙醇对人体(特别是婴幼儿)危害风险较大。采用固相萃取与气相色谱-质谱(gas chromatography-mass spectrometry,GC-MS)联用技术,对食用植物油和含脂食品中的氯丙醇酯[3-氯-1,2-丙二醇脂肪酸酯(简称3-MCPD酯)和2-氯-1,3-丙二醇脂肪酸酯(简称2-MCPD酯)]进行检测。该方法准确度高(3-MCPD酯和2-MCPD酯的平均回收率分别为98.9%和96.5%)、灵敏度高(3-MCPD酯和2-MCPD酯的检出限分别为0.042 mg·kg-1和0.058 mg·kg-1)、重现性好(相对标准偏差均低于5%)。76批次监测样品中,3-MCPD酯和2-MCPD酯的含量分别为0.042~4.865 mg·kg-1(平均值为0.773 mg·kg-1)和0.058~2.592 mg·kg-1(平均值为0.469 mg·kg-1)。经机构间的协同验证和英国FAPAS样的能力验证,2种氯丙醇酯在0.200~3.000 mg·kg-1范围内线性良好,为进一步研究奠定了基础,同时也为食品加工企业严格控制生产过程建立了一种可行的检测方法。 相似文献

【背景】随着餐厨垃圾产生量的逐步提高,如何实现其快速降解,成为餐厨垃圾处理亟待解决的问题。餐厨垃圾的高温好氧生物减量技术是一种可以快速降解餐厨垃圾的有效方法。【目的】筛选能够适应餐厨垃圾环境且具有高效降解餐厨垃圾中有机物能力的菌株,以提高餐厨垃圾的降解效率和减量效果。【方法】采用温度梯度耐受性实验和餐厨垃圾浸出液高油高盐耐受性实验进行菌种初筛,并利用产酶培养基复筛及餐厨垃圾生物减量实验验证。【结果】通过初筛、复筛和功能验证,最终获得4株生物减量效果优良的菌株N3-1、C7、N3-3和G6-1,其对餐厨垃圾挥发性固体(volatile solid,VS)的降解率分别为36.95%、33.23%、32.83%和31.91%,是对照组的3.02、2.71、2.68和2.61倍。经鉴定,这4株菌分别属于热嗜油地芽孢杆菌(Geobacillus thermoleovorans)、史氏芽孢杆菌(Bacillus smithii)、热解木糖地芽孢杆菌(Geobacillus caldoxylosilyticus)和立陶宛地芽孢杆菌(Geobacillus lituanicus)。【结论】筛选出的4株菌均具有较强的餐厨垃圾原料适应性和高效的生物降解能力,为开发餐厨垃圾高温好氧复合菌剂奠定了基础,并为实现餐厨垃圾减量化、无害化处理和资源化利用提供了技术支持。 相似文献

The diet of the gracile mouse opossum Gracilinanus microtarsus was studied in a cerrado remnant in south-eastern Brazil through the analysis of faeces sampled from adult individuals. Patterns of food resource consumption were assessed using the statistics of per cent occurrence. Intrapopulation variation in the number of food items detected in faeces as a function of relevant factors was inferred using generalized linear models. The latter statistical formalism also allowed variation in the number of food items detected in faeces to be interpreted in terms of rate ratios among levels of significant factors. Insects, spiders, snails and fruits were detected in the faeces of G. microtarsus , with insects, particularly termites, beetles and ants, being the most frequently detected food resource. These food resources were consumed in proportion to their relative abundance in the cerrado, suggesting that G . microtarsus is an opportunistic forager feeding primarily on insects. The generalized linear model identified sex, season and food resource as significant factors affecting the number of food items detected in faeces, as well as interactions between sex and season and season and food resource. Rate ratios calculated between sexes within seasons showed that the number of food items detected in the faeces of males was larger than that detected in the faeces of females in the warm-wet and cool-dry seasons. Rate ratios calculated between seasons within sexes showed different trends in the number of food items detected in faeces for each significant food resource. It is suggested that differences in the number of food items detected in faeces between sexes within season and between seasons within sexes are related to energetic requirements associated with reproduction. 相似文献
