In order to understand how a compound eye channels light to the retina and forms an image, one needs to know the refractive index distribution in the crystalline cones. Direct measurements of the refractive indices require sections of fresh, unfixed tissue and the use of an interference microscope, but frequently neither is available. Using the eye of the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba (the main food of baleen whales) we developed a computational method to predict a likely refractive index distribution non-invasively from sections of fixed material without the need of an interference microscope. We used a computer model of the eye and calculated the most realistic spatial distribution of the refractive index gradient in the crystalline cone that would enable the eye to produce a sharp image on the retina. The animals are known to see well and on the basis of our computations we predict that for the eyes of the adult a maximum refractive index of 1.45-1.50 in the centre of the cone yields a better angular sensitivity and light absorption in a target receptor of the retina than if N(max) were 1.55. In juveniles with a narrower spatial separation between dioptric structures and retina, however, an N(max) of 1.50-1.55 gives a superior result. Our method to determine the most likely refractive index distribution in the cone without the need of fresh material and an interference microscope could be useful in the study of other invertebrate eyes that are known to possess good resolving power, but for a variety of reasons are not suitable for or will not permit direct refractive index measurements of their dioptric tissues to be taken. 相似文献

It proved possible to determine the levels of Sr-90 in the opercular bones of individual pike, Esox Iucius , and in pooled samples of bones from perch, Perca fluviatilis . Results from both species from Windermere demonstrated that Sr-90 levels rose from below the detection limits in the 1940s to a peak in the 1960s, followed by a decline in the subsequent two decades. This decline was slower than would have been expected from the decline in northern hemisphere Sr-90 fallout, indicating the likelihood of recycling within the environment. Sr-90 levels were consistently lower in pike than in perch, their main prey fish. Thus, there is no concentration of Sr-90 up this part of the aquatic food chain. Tracking Sr-90 in bones taken in successive years from ages 3 to 8 for a single cohort of pike showed that the quantity of Sr-90 was closely related to opercular bone (and hence fish) weight. 目前,淹没式释放是赤眼蜂田间应用的主要方式,在这种释放方式下成虫羽化后在田间的存活时间是影响其防治效果的一个重要因素。本研究以松毛虫赤眼蜂雌成虫为材料,将赤眼蜂引入固定在桃树上的透气的塑料管中,研究了田间不同地面植被(紫花苜蓿和自然生杂草)和不同试验日期(5月31日、6月5日、7月17日、7月24日、8月24日和8月30日)温度、湿度、食物和叶片等因子对成虫存活时间的影响。结果表明:不同地面植被和不同试验日期松毛虫赤眼蜂成虫的存活时间差异显著,成虫的存活时间紫花苜蓿区明显长于自然生杂草区;5月31日和6月5日试验日期的成虫存活时间最长,7月17日和7月24日试验日期成虫的存活时间最短。成虫的存活时间与温度和湿度都呈显著负相关,但温度对成虫存活时间的影响更为显著。松毛虫赤眼蜂羽化后补充营养可以显著延长成虫的存活时间;食物充足的条件下,桃叶的存在使成虫的存活时间明显延长。结论认为,在田间环境下温度和食物是影响赤眼蜂成虫存活时间的主要因子。 相似文献

Optimal foraging models predict that large predators should concentrate on large prey in order to maximize their net gain of energy intake. Here, we show that the largest species of sea turtle, Dermochelys coriacea, does not strictly adhere to this general pattern. Field observations combined with a theoretical model suggest that a 300 kg leatherback turtle would meet its energetic requirements by feeding for 3-4 h a day on 4 g jellyfish, but only if prey were aggregated in high-density patches. Therefore, prey abundance rather than prey size may, in some cases, be the overriding parameter for foraging leatherbacks. This is a classic example where the presence of small prey in the diet of a large marine predator may reflect profitable foraging decisions if the relatively low energy intake per small individual prey is offset by high encounter rates and minimal capture and handling costs. This study provides, to our knowledge, the first quantitative estimates of intake rate for this species. 相似文献

Summary The effects of food on breeding success and behavior of the red-winged blackbird (Icteridae: Agelaius phoeniceus) were investigated during 3 successive breeding seasons. In the second season, a 4-week pulse of abundant food in the form of a periodical cicada emergence (Homoptera: Cicadidae: Magicicada spp.) occurred in the forest adjacent to the marsh where the birds were breeding.During the cicada period, the bird population showed: 1) an increase in foraging trips to the forest and a decrease in trips per h, 2) increased biomass of nestlings, 3) increased nestling survival caused by decreased starvation, 4) increased fledging success, and 5) bimodal weight distributions of older nestlings (reflective of the sexual dimorphism in this species). These data suggest the temporary removal of food limitations on the breeding population when the pulse of food was available. 相似文献

Aims
To investigate the effect of support and growth medium (GM) on Pleurotus ostreatus biofilm production, specific metabolic activity (SMA) and ultrastructure.Methods and Results
Biofilms were developed on membranes covering a broad range of surface properties and, due to the applicative implications of mixed biofilms, on standard bacterial GM in stationary and shaken culture. Hydrophilic (glass fibre, Duran glass and hydroxyapatite) and mild hydrophobic (polyurethane, stainless steel, polycarbonate, nylon) supports were more adequate for biofilm attachment than the hydrophobic Teflon. Among the GM, sucrose–asparagine (SA) was more conducive to biofilm production than Luria–Bertani and M9. GM was more influential than support type on biofilm ultrastructure, and a high compactness was evident in biofilms developed on SA. Biofilms on Duran glass were more efficient than planktonic cultures in olive‐mill wastewater treatment.Conclusions
The main effects of support and GM variables and their binary interactions on both biofilm production and SMA were all highly significant (P < 0·001): thus, the magnitude of the effect of each variable strongly depended on the level of the other one.Significance and Impact of the Study

Although nitrogen (N) deposition is increasing globally, N availability still limits many organisms, such as microorganisms and mesofauna. However, little is known to which extent soil organisms rely on mineral‐derived N and whether plant community composition modifies its incorporation into soil food webs. More diverse plant communities more effectively compete with microorganisms for mineral N likely reducing the incorporation of mineral‐derived N into soil food webs. We set up a field experiment in experimental grasslands with different levels of plant species and functional group richness. We labeled soil with 15NH4 15NO3 and analyzed the incorporation of mineral‐derived 15N into soil microorganisms and mesofauna over 3 months. Mineral‐derived N incorporation decreased over time in all investigated organisms. Plant species richness and presence of legumes reduced the uptake of mineral‐derived N into microorganisms. In parallel, the incorporation of mineral‐derived 15N into mesofauna species declined with time and decreased with increasing plant species richness in the secondary decomposer springtail Ceratophysella sp. Effects of both plant species richness and functional group richness on other mesofauna species varied with time. The presence of grasses increased the 15N incorporation into Ceratophysella sp., but decreased it in the primary decomposer oribatid mite Tectocepheus velatus sarekensis. The results highlight that mineral N is quickly channeled into soil animal food webs via microorganisms irrespective of plant diversity. The amount of mineral‐derived N incorporated into soil animals, and the plant community properties affecting this incorporation, differed markedly between soil animal taxa, reflecting species‐specific use of food resources. Our results highlight that plant diversity and community composition alter the competition for N in soil and change the transfer of N across trophic levels in soil food webs, potentially leading to changes in soil animal population dynamics and community composition. Sustaining high plant diversity may buffer detrimental effects of elevated N deposition on soil biota. 相似文献
