Introduction: The exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy is one of the leading causes of perinatal adverse outcomes such as stillbirth, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and low birth weight, but the underlying biological mechanisms are still unclear. The incidence of this phenomenon maybe largely underestimated since the evaluation is made mainly by self-assessment questionnaires rather than measuring nicotine metabolites (such as cotinine) in biological fluids. In this context metabolomics may be useful to assess the actual number of pregnant women and to highlight the pathophysiological mechanisms that lead to the abovementioned adverse outcomes.

Areas covered: The aims of this review are to analyze the literature and the application of the omics sciences, such as genomics and metabolomics concerning the negative effects of smoking during pregnancy in order to give a comprehensive picture of all the study made so far and to point out the potential of metabolomics as an investigative, predictive, and diagnostic tool.

Expert commentary: Metabolomics in recent years has proved an excellent tool to try to understand the problems in perinatal medicine. With the increase in the number of studies we are convinced that it can be a useful instrument of investigation in this field.  相似文献

Metal elements are essential micronutrients required by all plants for natural physiological activities. Nicotianamine is considered as the chelate substance in the transport of metal ions. In the present study, a new gene encoding NA synthase was isolated from Malus domestica (L.) Borkh and designated as MdNAS1. The expression levels of MdNAS1 were enriched in leaf, and phloem which were highly affected by Fe stress, indoleacetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) treatments in M. domestica seedlings. Subcellular localization research revealed that MdNAS1 was localized in cytoplasmic membrane. Overexpression of MdNAS1 in transgenic tobaccos increased the tolerance to Fe stress, but also contributes to higher chlorophyll, NA, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn contents and abnormal flowers. Moreover, the MdNAS1-OE tobaccos had the increased expression levels of Fe uptake and transport related genes (NtFRO, NtIRT1, NtVIT, NtNRAMP1, and NtYSL).  相似文献

为将湖北省种质资源普查与收集行动收集到的77份烟草种质资源入国家烟草种质资源中期库进行编目和保存,对其进行田间鉴定,获得各烟草种质资源的主要农艺性状和主要病毒病抗性鉴定等数据,并对各种质资源的株型、叶片、花序、花冠、蒴果等拍摄照片。经鉴定B035、B075和B076等种质抗多种主要病毒病,B025免疫TMV(Tobacco mosaic virus)。利用田间表型鉴定和SSR标记鉴定的结果对拟编目资源进行鉴定整理,剔除重复收集的种质资源。本研究结果为丰富国家烟草种质资源库遗传多样性及烟草育种工作奠定良好基础。  相似文献

A recessive temperature dependent shooty mutant (tds) of Nicotiana tabacum L. (W38) is described. The mutant phenotype is expressed at low temperature (21 °C). Mutant characteristics include thick, narrow leaves with abnormal mesophyll cells, short internodes, and near absence of apical dominance. Most plants remain vegetative and the occasional flower has petaloid stamens. High temperature (30 °C) reverses the mutant phenotype, with formation of normal leaves and restoration of apical dominance. However, many flowers still have petaloid stamens. Reciprocal grafting and auxin-cytokinin interaction experiments do not suggest shifts in auxin-cytokinin balance. Overall, this mutant bears some resemblance to transgenic tobacco overexpressing homeodomain genes from maize and Arabidopsis. Received: 23 August 1996 / Accepted: 24 September 1996  相似文献

Dual effect of phytochrome A on hypocotyl growth under continuous red light   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4  
The role of phytochrome A in the control of hypocotyl growth under continuous red light (Rc) was investigated using phyA and phyB mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana, which lack phytochrome A (phyA) or phytochrome B (phyB), respectively, and transgenic seedlings of Nicotiana tabacum overexpressing Avena phyA, compared to the corresponding wild type (WT). In WT seedlings of A. thaliana, hypocotyl growth inhibition showed a biphasic response to the fluence rate of Rc, with a brake at 10?2μmol m?2 s?1. At equal total fluence rate, hourly pulses of red light caused slightly more inhibition than Rc. The response to very low fluences of continuous or pulsed red light was absent in the phyA and phyA phyB mutants and present in the phyB mutant. The second part of the response was steeper in the phyA mutant than in the WT but was absent in the phyB mutant. In WT tobacco the response to Rc was biphasic. Overexpression of Avena phyA enhanced the response only at very low fluence rates of Rc (< 10?2μmol m?2 s?1). In both species, the effect of hourly pulses of far-red light was similar to the maximum inhibition observed in the first phase of the response to Rc. Using reciprocity failure (i.e. higher inhibition under continuous than pulsed light) as the operational criterion, a ‘true’ high-irradiance reaction occurred under continuous far-red light but not under Rc or red plus far-red light mixtures. Native and overexpressed phyA are proposed to mediate very low fluence responses under Rc. In WT A. thaliana, this effect is counteracted by a negative action of phyA on phyB-mediated low-fluence responses.  相似文献
