Background: Diversity patterns of plant communities are related to the environment, including productivity and patchiness of habitat.

Aims: To determine differences in diversity patterns between serpentine and non-serpentine communities.

Methods: A two-year study was conducted in native eastern Mediterranean grasslands. For each year 40 0.25 m2 plots were sampled across four pairs of sites, each of which contained a serpentine and an adjacent non-serpentine plant community. Alpha and beta diversity (variation in species composition among plots within localities), species composition and biomass production were determined. Total soil elemental concentrations and pH were also measured.

Results: Serpentine habitats were shown to support a lower alpha diversity relative to non-serpentine habitatas on a per plot basis. Differences in alpha diversity between the two substrates were associated with variation in soil chemistry rather than above-ground biomass production. Serpentine habitats also exhibited lower beta diversity, which was unrelated to variation in biomass production. The two contrasting communities presented distinct species composition.

Conclusions: Differences in diversity patterns between serpentine and non-serpentine communities in the eastern Mediterranean are influenced by soil chemistry rather than biomass production.  相似文献

Functional diversity, which is the value, variation and distribution of traits in a community assembly, is an important component of biodiversity. Functional diversity is generally viewed as a key to understand ecosystem and community functioning. There are three components of functional diversity, i.e. functional richness, evenness and divergence. Functional diversity and species diversity can be either positively or negatively correlated, or uncorrelated, depending on the environmental conditions and disturbance intensity. Ecosystem functioning includes ecosystem processes, ecosystem properties and ecosystem stability. The diversity hypothesis and the mass ratio hypothesis are the two major hypotheses of explaining the effect of functional diversity on ecosystem functioning, diversity hypothesis reflects that organisms and their functional traits in a assemblage effect on ecosystem functioning by the complementarity of using resources, and mass ratio hypothesis emphasises the identify of the dominant species in a assemblage. These two hypotheses do not contradict each other and instead they reflect the two different sides of functional diversity and functional composition. The effect of functional diversity on ecosystem functioning also depends on abiotic factors, perturbation, management actions, etc. Function diversity potentially influences ecosystem service and management by effecting on ecosystem functioning. Ecosystem management groups should include functional diversity in their scheme and not just species richness.  相似文献

Biodiversity conservation in forested landscapes outside protected areas is important to sustain populations of species with restricted ranges. However, such habitats face many anthropogenic threats, including logging, extraction of firewood and leaf-litter for mulch in plantations. In this study, we determined the effects of forest degradation on amphibians and reptiles in forests outside protected areas by measuring their species richness and community composition across a disturbance gradient from near pristine to highly degraded forests in Agumbe, Western Ghats, India. Twenty-one strip 15 m × 150 m transects were laid across the disturbance gradient and diurnal visual encounter surveys were conducted. Sampling was repeated three times per transect covering the dry, intermediate and wet seasons. Amphibian and reptile communities were affected by the decrease in canopy cover and leaf litter volume, respectively. Our results indicate that the collection of firewood and leaf-litter can severely affect amphibian and reptile populations. Structured conservation planning outside of protected areas is therefore imperative.  相似文献

Abstract

Mount Medvednica (northwestern Croatia), mostly consisting of slates and marls, rises to the north, above the Croatian capital of Zagreb, from 300 to 1,035 m a.s.l. A floristic research was carried out in the area of Medvednica Nature Park, which consists mainly of the western part of the mountain. On the whole, 1,352 taxa of vascular plants were recorded from all sources (field observations, literature and herbaria). Out of these, 48 taxa are strictly protected, 228 are protected, 67 taxa are considered threatened according to the IUCN categories, and 9 taxa are endemic for the Croatian flora. The life-form analysis of the investigated flora shows the predominance of hemicryptophytes, followed by therophytes and geophytes, while the chorological analysis has evidenced the prevalence of Euro-Asiatic, South European and cosmopolite geographical groups. The biological/chorological cross-spectrum was laid out by considering the percent of every life-form for each geographical element. In order to evaluate the floristic richness of the studied area, the α-index was calculated and then compared with the α-indices of similar regions in Croatia and several European countries. A floristic diversity map of Medvednica Nature Park is presented here for the first time.  相似文献

Nineteen species of amphibians inhabit Romania, 9 of which reach their range limit on this territory. Based on published occurrence reports, museum collections and our own data we compiled a national database of amphibian occurrences. We georeferenced 26779 amphibian species occurrences, and performed an analysis of their spatial patterns, checking for hotspots and patterns of species richness. The results of spatial statistic analyses supported the idea of a biased sampling for Romania, with clear hotspots of increased sampling efforts. The sampling effort is biased towards species with high detectability, protected areas, and large cities. Future sampling efforts should be focused mostly on species with a high rarity score in order to accurately map their range. Our results are an important step in achieving the long-term goals of increasing the efficiency of conservation efforts and evaluating the species range shifts under climate change scenarios.  相似文献

Abstract

This study is focused on the selection of variables affecting lichen and bryophyte diversity in Mediterranean deciduous forests. Plots representing two forest types (Fagus sylvatica and Quercus cerris forests) and two forest continuity categories (old‐growth (OG) and non‐OG forests) were selected in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park (Italy). The presence and the abundance of bryophytes and epiphytic lichens were recorded. Structural variables of the forests and vascular plant species richness have been used as predictors. A strong positive correspondence between the two groups of organisms was found. Higher species richness and the distribution of rare species are related to OG stands, while a qualitative (species composition) rather than a quantitative (species richness) difference between the two forest types was observed. Some species elsewhere considered as indicators of forest continuity, such as Lobaria pulmonaria, Antitrichia curtipendula, and Homalothecium sericeum, are associated with OG forests, independently from forest type, suggesting that they can be regarded as suitable indicators also in Mediterranean forests. Finally, our results suggest that old trees, high levels of basal area, a broad range of diameter classes, and high understory diversity are the main structural features affecting cryptogamic communities, while no correlation was found with the occurrence of deadwood.  相似文献

Abstract

Road density has increased in the Canary Islands' forests during the last century, affecting an unknown amount of forested area. We studied road effects on vegetation in the relict laurel forest of Tenerife. We assessed edge effects on plant species richness, plant composition and litter production. Effects of anthropogenic corridors on vegetation differed between paved roads and unpaved trails. Opportunistic species (shade intolerant) dominated road edges, but composition differed among all sites. Multivariate analysis revealed convergence in species composition along the corridor-interior gradient. For trails, both species richness and litter production did not differ significantly between edge and interior. Road edge effects on vegetation were detectable only within the first 10 m towards the interior. This suggests that the main effects of roads and trails on species richness are limited to the immediate edge of the laurel forest. Litter fall along road edges was half that of the interior. However, no significant differences were detected due to the high variability of the data. A buffer of approximately 10 m would result in the reduction of the total area of the remaining undisturbed laurel forest. Based on these results, the building of new paved roads should not be considered. Low human population inflow into the Anaga Rural Park needs to be maintained on a sustainable basis. Forest managers should take these road/trail effects into account when planning new road openings in this ecosystem.  相似文献
