Small-sized and juvenile fishes as well as physicochemical water parameters in various primary, secondary and rarely flooded temporary floodplains of the Okavango Delta were assessed during the different hydrological phases of the 2009–2010 flooding season. Small fishes were sampled in the marginal zone of the floodplains using a throw-trap net and a suite of physicochemical properties were measured. Both physicochemical water quality parameters and densities of small fishes showed spatiotemporal variations across the temporary floodplain types. Turbidity, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, woody debris and chlorophyll a were all highest in rarely flooded floodplains compared to both primary and secondary floodplains (ANOVA, p < 0.05). Fish from 38 fish taxa belonging to 11 families were identified and classified during the study. The fish families Cichlidae (dominated by tilapias), Poeciliidae (Aplocheilichthys spp.) and Cyprinidae (Barbus spp.), were the most abundant across the study floodplains. The poeciliids were most abundant in frequently flooded primary and secondary floodplains, whereas juvenile cichlids dominated in rarely flooded floodplains. During high floods the rarely flooded portions of the delta function as important nursery habitats for juvenile cichlids, implying that a significant reduction in flooding may have negative effects on the delta's tilapia stocks due to reduced recruitment success.  相似文献

1. Floodplain inundation provides many benefits to fish assemblages of floodplain river systems, particularly those with a predictable annual flood pulse that drives yearly peaks in fish production. In arid‐zone rivers, hydrological patterns are highly variable and the influence of irregular floods on fish production and floodplain energy subsidies may be less clear‐cut. To investigate the importance of floodplain inundation to a dryland river fish assemblage, we sampled fish life stages on the floodplain of Cooper Creek, an Australian arid‐zone river. Sampling was focused around Windorah during a major flood in January 2004 and in isolated waterholes in March 2004 following flood drawdown. 2. Of the 12 native species known to occur in this region, 11 were present on the floodplain, and all were represented by at least two of three life‐stages – larvae, juveniles or adult fish. Late stage larvae of six fish species were found on the floodplain. There were site‐specific differences in larval species assemblages, individual species abundances and larval distribution patterns among floodplain sites. 3. Significant growth was evident on the floodplain, particularly by larval and juvenile fish, reflecting the combination of high water temperatures and shallow, food rich habitats provided by the relatively flat floodplain. 4. Low variation in biomass, species richness and presence/absence of juvenile and adult fish across four floodplain sites indicates consistently high fish productivity across an extensive area. 5. Similarities and differences in fish biomass between the floodplain and isolated post‐flood waterholes suggest high rates of biomass transfer (involving the most abundant species) into local waterholes and, potentially, biomass transfer by some species to other waterholes in the catchment during floodplain inundation and after floods recede. 6. The high concentration of fish on this shallow floodplain suggests it could be a key area of high fish production that drives a significant proportion of waterhole productivity in the vicinity. The Windorah floodplain provides favourable conditions necessary for the spawning of some species and juvenile recruitment of the majority of species. It is also appears to be a significant conduit for the movements of fish that underpin high genetic similarity, hence population mixing, of many species throughout the Cooper Creek catchment. The high floodplain fish production in turn provides a significant energy subsidy to waterholes after floodwaters recede. 7. The identification of key sites of high fish production, such as the Windorah floodplain, may be important from a conservation perspective. Key management principles should be: maintenance of the natural flooding regime; identification of the most productive floodplain areas; and maintenance of their connectivity to anastomosing river channels and the remnant aquatic habitats that ultimately sustain this fish assemblage through long‐term dry/drought and flood cycles.  相似文献

Aim

(i) To determine whether area and connectivity of temporary ponds can predict plant species diversity, and the diversity and abundance of different plant life histories; (ii) To explore whether pond connectivity with the river prior to river regulation predicts better plant diversity patterns than current pond connectivity, suggestive of possible effects of connectivity loss.

Location

Eastern Carpathian Mountains, Romania, Europe.

Methods

We fitted linear and generalized linear models (LM and GLM) to examine whether pond area and current distance from the Olt River predict plant species richness, Shannon diversity and relative cover of different social behaviour types and overall plant species richness and Shannon diversity. Using historical maps, we measured pond distance from the river ca. 60 years before the Olt River was regulated, and we refitted the LM and GLM models using pond area and past distance from the river as independent variables.

Results

Total plant species richness increased with pond area, and it decreased with the distance from the river, but total plant Shannon diversity index was affected, positively, only by pond area. The strength of responses to pond area and connectivity of species richness, Shannon diversity and relative cover varied across the different social behaviour types. Past and current distances between ponds and riverbeds had similar effects on plant diversity, with some evidence for stronger effect of the present connectivity on specialist species Shannon diversity and a weaker effect on disturbance tolerants, generalists and competitors.

Main Conclusions

Pond area and connectivity with the landscape are important predictors of the diversity of plant life history strategies, and therefore, useful tools in pond conservation. Consistent species richness and Shannon diversity responses of wetland specialists to pond area and connectivity make this life history type well suited for monitoring pond condition.  相似文献

A mark-recapture programme at the Pabna Irrigation and Rural Development Project (PIRDP) site in NW Bangladesh showed that Catla catla, Channa striata and Wallago attu migrated through the sluice gates, both with and against prevailing currents in different season, while the smaller Anabas testudineus, Glossogobius giuris and Puntius sophore did not. Species assemblages were significantly different inside and outside the flood control, drainage and irrigation (FCDI) schemes, with up to 25 species absent or less abundant inside compared to outside. The majority of these species were large predators or conspicuous members of the highly prized migratory 'whitefish' category, including silurid catfish, Indian major carps, mullets and clupeids. In their absence, species inside FCDI schemes were dominated by much smaller resident 'blackfish' species. Assemblages inside FCDI schemes thus had both a reduced species richness, and a unit value reduced by up to 25%. It was concluded that FCDI schemes such as the PIRDP negatively affect fish species assemblages and stock values, by reducing the accessibility of impounded floodplains to migrant fish. Though some fish are capable of penetrating existing sluice gates, management measures are required to encourage the passage of more species.  相似文献

1. A litter‐bag experiment was undertaken in a pond on the margins of a large temperate floodplain in south‐western France to assess the potential influence of the replacement of native by exotic riparian species on organic matter degradation. We determined initial litter chemical composition, breakdown rates and the invertebrate assemblages associated with the litter for five pairs of native dominant and exotic invasive species co‐occurring at different stages along a successional gradient. 2. Litter chemical composition, breakdown rates and abundance and diversity of detritivorous invertebrates were similar for the exotic and native species overall. No overall changes in organic matter degradation can thus be predicted from the replacement of dominant natives by exotic invasives. Breakdown rates were primarily driven by the C/N ratio. 3. One invasive species (Buddleja davidii) showed significantly higher breakdown rates than its native counterpart (Populus nigra), resulting in the disappearance of leaf litter 6 months prior to the next litterfall. In some cases, therefore, invasion by exotic species may result in discontinuity of resource supply for decomposers.  相似文献

The Pantanal Mato-grossense is an extensive floodplain system located in the center of South America with important macrophytic primary producers. This study describes the dynamics of net primary production and the biomass of the aquatic macrophyte Pontederia lanceolata, the dominant species in some floodplain fields near Poconé. Productivity was determined from a combination of demographic and growth methods. Biomass was determined using squares of known area, periodically distributed at random. The average productivity during the period was 3.11 g dry weight m-2 day-1. The minimum and maximum values (0.04 g dry weight m-2 day-1 and 8.59 g dry weight m-2 day-1, respectively) occurred during the drought and the flood period, respectively. The standing stock varied between 12.7 and 235.9 g dry weight m-2, determined at the beginning of the flood and at its peak, respectively. The dynamics of the productivity and the standing stock of the species are associated with the flood patterns of the area and with life cycle of the plant.  相似文献
