Members of the genus Platyamoeba are among the most common of the free-living brackish and marine amoebae; yet, to date only twelve species have been documented in the literature and only a limited number of habitats have been sampled globally. During the course of a systematic survey of salt-marsh amoebae along the east coast of the United States, a new species of Platyamoeba was discovered in sediment samples obtained from a salt marsh at Assateague Island, VA. The species can be distinguished from all other described species within the genus by the presence of a nucleus with a single parietal nucleolus and a floating form with long tapering pseudopods. Its shape varies from flabellate to spatulate as described for species of Platyamoeba and Vannella. The fine structure of the glycocalyx, however, is characteristic of Platyamoeba.  相似文献

Internodal elongation in floating rice (Oryza sativa) is known to be enhanced by treatment with ethylene or gibberellic acid (GA3) at high relative humidity (RH). However, ethylene-induced internodal elongation is inhibited at low RH, while GA3-induced internodal elongation is hardly affected by humidity. We examined the effects of ethylene and GA3 on the rate of transpiration in stem segments incubated at 30% or 100% RH. Ethylene promoted the transpiration of stem segments at 30% RH, but not at 100% RH, while GA3 had little effect on transpiration at either 30% or 100% RH. We propose that the absence of ethylene-induced internodal elongation at low RH is due, at least in part, to ethylene-induced transpiration.  相似文献

A multiple-unit-type oral floating dosage form (FDF) of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was developed to prolong gastric residence time, target stomach cancer, and increase drug bioavailability. The floating bead formulations were prepared by dispersing 5-FU together with calcium carbonate into a mixture of sodium alginate and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose solution and then dripping the dispersion into an acidified solution of calcium chloride. Calcium alginate beads were formed, as alginate undergoes ionotropic gelation by calcium ions and carbon dioxide develops from the reaction of carbonate salts with acid. The evolving gas permeated through the alginate matrix, leaving gas bubbles or pores, which provided the beads buoyancy. The prepared beads were evaluated for percent drug loading, drug entrapment efficiency, image, surface topography, buoyancy, and in vitro release. The formulations were optimized for different weight ratios of gas-forming agent and sodium alginate. The beads containing higher amounts of calcium carbonate demonstrated instantaneous, complete, and excellent floating ability over a period of 24 hours. The optimized formulation was subjected to in vivo antitumor studies to check the therapeutic efficacy of the floating dosage forms containing 5-FU against benzo(a)pyrene-induced stomach tumors in albino female mice (Balb/C strain). The multiple-bead FDF was found to reduce the tumor incidence in mice by 74%, while the conventional tablet dosage form reduced this incidence by only 25%. The purpose of this research was to develop and optimize a controlled-release multiunit floating system of a highly water soluble drug, ranitidine HCl, using Compritol, Gelucire 50/13, and Gelucire 43/01 as lipid carriers. Ranitidine HCl-lipid granules were prepared by the melt granulation technique and evaluated for in vitro floating and drug release. ethyl cellulose, methylcellulose, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose were evaluated as release rate modifiers. A 32 full factorial design was used for optimization by taking the amounts of Gelucire 43/01 (X 1) and ethyl cellulose (X 2) as independent variables, and the percentage drug released in 1(Q1), 5(Q5), and 10 (Q10) hours as dependent variables. The results revealed that the moderate amount of Gelucire 43/01 and ethyl cellulose provides desired release of ranitidine hydrochloride from a floating system. Batch F4 was considered optimum since it contained less Gelucire and was more similar to the theoretically predicted dissolution profile (f2=62.43). The temperature sensitivity studies for the prepared formulations at 40°C/75% relative humidity for 3 months showed no significant change in in vitro drug release pattern. These studies indicate that the hydrophobic lipid Gelucire 43/01 can be considered an effective carrier for design of a multiunit floating drug delivery system for highly water soluble drugs such as ranitidine HCl. 以1/4园试营养液为对照,以腐熟发酵的农业秸秆(苋菜和番茄植株残体)浸提液模拟富含N、P的水体进行不结球白菜(Brassica campestris ssp.chinensis Makino)的漂浮栽培,对茎叶的单株鲜质量和干质量及叶片的VC、可溶性蛋白质、蔗糖、果糖、葡萄糖含量及可溶性糖总含量进行了比较分析。结果表明:在24 d的栽培周期内,随生长时间的延长,处理组和对照组茎叶的单株鲜质量和干质量均呈增加趋势,但从第10天开始,处理组茎叶的单株鲜质量和干质量均显著低于对照组。栽培初期叶片VC含量均最高且处理组叶片VC含量显著低于对照组;从第10天开始,叶片VC含量降低,但处理组叶片VC含量与对照组无显著差异。处理组与对照组叶片可溶性蛋白质含量均呈波动的变化趋势,但总体差异不显著。处理组叶片蔗糖含量总体上与对照组差异不显著,仅在第24天显著低于对照组。处理组叶片的果糖含量均高于对照组,特别是在第24天为对照组的1.81倍,差异显著。叶片葡萄糖含量均呈先升高后降低的趋势,可溶性糖总含量则呈波动的变化趋势,对照组叶片葡萄糖含量和可溶性糖总含量总体上高于处理组,但差异不显著。研究结果显示:用秸秆浸提液漂浮栽培,虽然不结球白菜的生长量(即产量)有所减少,但相关的品质指标变化不大,对果糖合成和积累还有一定的促进作用,因而,此种秸秆浸提液可用于栽培商品不结球白菜。  相似文献

Riverine tsetse flies such as Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides are the vectors of human and animal trypanosomoses in West Africa. Despite intimate links between tsetse and water, to our knowledge there has never been any attempt to design trapping devices that would catch tsetse on water. In mangrove (Guinea) one challenging issue is the tide, because height above the ground for a trap is a key factor affecting tsetse catches. The trap was mounted on the remains of an old wooden dugout, and attached with rope to nearby branches, thereby allowing it to rise and fall with the tide. Catches showed a very high density of 93.9 flies/"water-trap"/day, which was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than all the catches from other habitats where the classical trap had been used. In savannah, on the Comoe river of South Burkina Faso, the biconical trap was mounted on a small wooden raft anchored to a stone, and catches were compared with the classical biconical trap put on the shores. G. p. gambiensis and G. tachinoides densities were not significantly different from those from the classical biconical one. The adaptations described here have allowed to efficiently catch tsetse on the water, which to our knowledge is reported here for the first time. This represents a great progress and opens new opportunities to undertake studies on the vectors of trypanosomoses in mangrove areas of Guinea, which are currently the areas showing the highest prevalences of sleeping sickness in West Africa. It also has huge potential for tsetse control using insecticide impregnated traps in savannah areas where traps become less efficient in rainy season. The Guinean National control programme has already expressed its willingness to use such modified traps in its control campaigns in Guinea, as has the national PATTEC programme in Burkina Faso during rainy season.  相似文献

Many species of macroalgae survive after becoming dislodged from their primary substratum, but little is known about their capacity to express anti-herbivore defences after detachment. We examined the effect of detachment on the relative palatability of the two kelp species Lessonia nigrescens and Macrocystis integrifolia to mesograzers. Laboratory and field experiments were conducted on the northern-central coast of Chile to investigate whether (i) time after detachment and (ii) grazing on detached and attached algae could trigger internal defence mechanisms in the algae, which may have acted as deterrents to grazing. In order to examine palatability, feeding assays were run after each experiment using fresh algal pieces and artificial food. Time after detachment had a significant influence on palatability of L. nigrescens but not of M. integrifolia. During the first 12 days of detachment, detached L. nigrescens held in grazer-free laboratory tanks were not significantly more palatable than attached conspecifics from the field but thereafter detached individuals became more palatable. Floating individuals of M. integrifolia showed no effect of detachment, indicating that this alga maintains its defence after detachment. An experiment conducted in the field confirmed these results for M. integrifolia. An additional laboratory experiment confirmed that attachment status plays an important role on algal defence reaction for L. nigrescens when exposed to grazers. Detached and previously grazed individuals of this species were less palatable than grazer-free control algae, but grazing had no effect on palatability of attached algae. Our results indicate that kelps have varying capacities for development of anti-grazing responses once they become detached, possibly depending on their capacity to float and survive after detachment.  相似文献

Log floating in the 19th to mid 20th centuries has profoundly changed the environmental conditions in many northern river systems of the world. Regulation of flow by dams, straightening and narrowing of channels by various piers and wing dams, and homogenization of bed structure are some of the major impacts. As a result, the conditions for many riverine organisms have been altered. Removing physical constructions and returning boulders to the channels can potentially restore conditions for these organisms. Here we describe the history of log driving, review its impact on physical and biological conditions and processes, and predict the responses to restoration. Reviewing the literature on comparable restoration efforts and building upon this knowledge, using boreal Swedish rivers as an example, we address the last point. We hypothesize that restoration measures will make rivers wider and more sinuous, and provide rougher bottoms, thus improving land-water interactions and increasing the retention capacity of water, sediment, organic matter and nutrients. The geomorphic and hydraulic/hydrologic alterations are supposed to favor production, diversity, migration and reproduction of riparian and aquatic organisms. The response rates are likely to vary according to the types of processes and organisms. Some habitat components, such as beds of very large boulders and bedrock outcrops, and availability of sediment and large woody debris are believed to be extremely difficult to restore. Monitoring and evaluation at several scales are needed to test our predictions.  相似文献

Summary An indigenous strain Gordonia alkanivorans CC-JG39 was isolated from oil-contaminated sludge of a local gas station located in central Taiwan. The bacterial isolate was able to grow on diesel-containing Bushnell–Haas medium and also tolerate various chemical additives frequently used in petroleum products (e.g. BETX, methyl-tert-butyl ether, and naphthalene). Kinetics of diesel-limited cell growth and biodegradation of diesel followed a Monod-type model. The kinetic constants for cell growth (μmax and KS,G) were 0.158 h−1 and 3196 mg/l, respectively, while those for biodegradation of diesel (vmax, diesel and KS,D) were 3.59 mg/h/mg cell and 2874 mg/l, respectively. G. alkanivorans CC-JG39 produced extracellular surface-active material, leading to a low surface tension of nearly 33 mN/m. The CC-JG39 strain also possessed the ability to float towards the oil/water interface. These features might play some roles in enhancing the mass transfer efficiency between oil substrate and the bacterial cells. Therefore, G. alkanivorans CC-JG39 may have potential applications in bioremediation of oil pollution sites.  相似文献

Coastal floating seaweed, originating from the intertidal, is colonized by various pelagic and subtidal benthic animals. At southwestern Iceland, common macrofaunal colonizers include the fish Cyclopterus lumpus L., the harpacticoid Parathalestris croni (Krøyer), the amphipods Calliopius laeviusculus (Krøyer), Gammarellus angulosus(Rathke), Dexamine thea Boeck and Ischyrocerus anguipes (Krøyer), and the isopod Idotea baltica Pallas. The colonization patterns of these species were studied by collecting samples from experimental and natural clumps of floating seaweed at approximately monthly intervals for ca. 18 months. The occurrence of colonizers was highly seasonal with maximum numbers between April and September. For most species, numbers were correlated with weight of clumps. The relationship of density (numbers/100 g algae) to weight of clump and distance from shore varied between species. The algal species composition of clumps appeared to influence some colonizers. Only juvenile C. lumpus were found, while all P. croni were sexually mature; juveniles predominated in other species. The different colonization patterns of the species can be explained partly by their biological traits. The clumps are vital for the breeding of P. croni and are used for feeding by C. lumpus fry. Other species possibly colonize floating algae accidentally, being programmed to seek attached vegetation. Floating clumps may, nevertheless, serve to disperse these species.  相似文献
