Abstract.
  • 1 A case study is presented of the autumn migration of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), in the area of Nanjing in the People's Republic of China. The study was made using a high frequency (8 mm wavelength) radar and a net suspended from a kytoon.
  • 2 The observations confirmed that long-distance return migrations occur in China in mid and late September, with N.lugens being carried on the prevailing north-easterly wind towards the autumn infestation and overwintering areas of the species.
  • 3 After mass take-off in the late afternoon or at dusk, the migrants flew for several hours during the evening, often in a dense layer which formed at heights between about 400 and 1000m above ground. These layers often had well-defined ceilings corresponding to an air temperature of about 16°C. The migration height was above the top of the surface temperature inversion, i.e. the migrants did not fly at the height of the warmest air.
  • 4 The dense layer concentrations overflying the radar were backtracked to source areas up to 240 km away in the north-east of Jiangsu Province. Planthoppers observed emigrating from the Nanjing area would reach areas in south Anhui Province or north Jiangxi Province if they flew for 12 h.
  • 5 There was a second period of mass take-off at dawn. Insect layers sometimes formed but did not last longer than 1–2h.
  • 6 The present results were strikingly different from those previously observed in the dry season in the Philippines, where migratory flight durations were largely confined to periods of about 30min at dusk and dawn.
  • 7 Our observations are discussed in relation to the equator-wards return migrations undertaken in autumn by other insect species, and the importance of these migrations for the maintenance of long-flying genotypes in the overwintering populations is considered.

Butterfly migration from and to peninsular Florida
Abstract.
  • 1 Migrating butterflies were monitored with traps for 10 years at a site in north peninsular Florida, to determine seasonal and annual variation in numbers and directions of flight.
  • 2 In the spring, 81–96% of the principal migrants, Phoebis sennae (L.), Agraulis vanillae (L.), Precis coenia (Hübner) and Urbanus proteits (L.), flew northward; in the autumn, 86–95% flew southward.
  • 3 Estimated mean net numbers of these four species flying northward in spring across each ENE-WSW metre were 3, 6, 69 and <1 respectively; numbers flying southward in autumn were 222, 413, 37 and 146.
  • 4 During a 5-year period, the ratio of highest to lowest seasonal migration for a species did not exceed 9.3.
  • 5 The average median date of spring migration was 27 March for P.sennae, 23 April for P.coenia, and 12 May for A.vanillae. The average median date of autumn migration was 2–5 October except for U.proteus, whose average date was 14 October.
  • 6 The autumn migratory period, as measured by the duration of the middle half of migration, was about 2 weeks in P.coenia and about 4 weeks in the other three species.
  • 7 Compared to previously reported butterfly migrations, the ones studied here were notably uniform in magnitude and regular in timing.
  • 8 These and other data suggest that 4 million or more of these butterflies migrate northward from peninsular Florida almost every spring and that 40 million or more migrate southward to peninsular Florida almost every autumn.

Rearing larvae of Ips calligraphus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) in bolts of typical slash pine, Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii, with thin (TN; 0.5–1.5 mm) phloem (inner bark) relative to adult beetle body width significantly reduced body weight and lipid content of emerging adults compared with thick (TK; 2.5–3.5 mm) phloem-reared adults. Unmated (pre-nuptial) TK beetles averaged 2-fold longer daily and life-time flight duration than TN beetles. Daily flights were highly variable, averaging <20 min (longest daily flight=173 min). TK and TN beetles initiated flight, and the greatest number flew, on the first or second day after emergence form their rearing bolt; % of beetles flying and survival gradually declined to zero by day 9. Males (both TK and TN) averaged 2.5 days of flight, ca. 1 day longer than females. Fliers lived ca. 2-fold longer than non-fliers. Among TK and TN fliers, significant but weak positive correlations occurred between body weight and lifetime flight duration. Poor correlation between lifetime flight duration and longevity suggests little physiological cost to flight, but effects on fecundity were not assessed. Flight by mated, egg-laying (post-nuptial) beetles was substantially delayed (peaking on day 6), suggesting degeneration and subsequent regeneration of flight muscles.

ABSTRACT. Free-flying, wild Glossina pallidipes Aust. and G. morsitans Westw. were video-recorded in the field in Zimbabwe as they flew out of air permeated with host odour (camera 2.5 m up, looking down at the ground). Analysis of the flight tracks supports the proposal of Bursell (1984) that tsetse flies attracted to an invisible source of host odour respond weakly if at all to wind direction while in flight: on losing contact with the odour the flies made a sharp turn that was uncorrelated with wind direction. The size of the turn varied considerably, with a marked discontinuity in the log-survivorship curve at 120° (a fly which had turned through at least 120° was 5 times as likely to stop the turn as a fly which had turned <120°). Over half the flies made turns of >90° (and <2 m diameter) within the 2×2.5 m field of view of the camera. It is suggested that these turns initially served to arrest the upwind progress of the fly, with the size of the turn determining the degree to which the fly backtracked towards where it last detected odour or continues cross-wind. Mean flight speed was c. 5 ms-1 (min. 2.5, max. probably 7ms-1).

The 8-methoxycarbonyloctyl glycosides of GlcNAc, Gal1-4Glc, Fuc1-2Fuc1-3GalNac and Fuc1-2Gal1-3[Fuc1-4]GlcNac were converted to primary amines by reaction with neat ethylenediamine and then coupled to bovine serum albumin (BSA) using diethyl squarate as the connector. The average degree of incorporation of the sugar onto the protein, as well as the molecular weight distribution, could be conveniently determined using matrix assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry thus avoiding cumbersome structure-dependent colour-tests or analysis of cleaved ligand. The present coupling method has the advantages of proceeding under very mild conditions, yielding controlled incorporation values and can reliably be used for the coupling of very small amounts (mg) of oligosaccharide. This paper is dedicated to Sen-itiroh Hakomori on the occasion of his 65th birthday

Abstract The fatty acid (FA) compositions for total lipids from fat body, hemolymph and flight muscle of the armyworm moths, Mythirnna separata, at rest and after tethered flight for 1 h were determined by GC and GC-MS. The composition in these tissues comprises myristic acid (1%-2%), palmitic acid (more than 35%1, palmitoleic acid (9%-11%), stearic acid (less than 1%), oleic acid (about 32%), linoleic acid (12%-17%) and linolenic acid (3%-6%). After flight, FA level in the fat body, compared to that at rest, shows a significant decline at about 20 μg/mg tissue.h-1; the concentration of FAs in hemolymph rises evidently, but change of FA content in flight muscle appears to be small. From the changes of proportional composition of FAs in fat body, hemolymph and flight muscle, it is found that the FAs selectively utilized for flight in flight muscle are predominantly the palmitic acid and oleic acid.

Metabolite concentrations in flight muscles and in abdomen of beetles (Pachnoda sinuata) were measured after various periods of tethered flight and subsequent rest. Three distinct phases of energy metabolism are found in active flight muscles: (1) during the first minutes of flight proline is used as main substrate and concomitantly alanine accumulated as an end product; (2) the second phase is characterized by a large-scale degradation of glycogen; (3) after about 8 min of flight the metabolite levels stabilize, while flight performance appears unchanged. After the termination of flight the preflight proline concentration (70 mol·g-1 fw) is re-established in less than 60 min, whereas restoration of resting levels of other metabolites requires longer. The pattern of maximal enzyme activities and the respiratory rates of mitochondria with different substrates confirm the significance of proline and carbohydrates as the main fuels of working flight muscles.Abbreviations CS citrate synthetase - Cytox cytochrome c oxidase - EDTA ethylenediaminetetra-acetate - fw fresh weight - GluDH glutamate dehydrogenase - GPT alanine aminotransferase - HOAD hydroxyacyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase - HPLC high pressure liquid chromatography - ME malic enzyme - PCA perchloric acid - RQ repiratory quotient - TRA triethanolamine

Summary Data from 22Acromyrmex heyeri and 39A. striatus colonies showed that most were male-biased, while some were female-biased and a few had a sex ratio of 11. The time and pattern of swarming were different in both species and could be seen as strategies to avoid inbreeding.

Abstract. Experiments were conducted in a glasshouse and in the laboratory to determine the environmental and physiological parameters that affect flight behaviour of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). The number of whiteflies taking off and exhibiting a positive response to sky light in the glasshouse was greatest from 08.30 to 10.00 hours. During peak flight activity less than 5% of the population engaged in phototactic orientation. Temperature was the best single predictor for the phototactic response, accounting for 75% of the variability in whitefly ascent. Sex ratios were determined for individuals remaining on poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima (Willd.), and for individuals that exhibited phototactic orientation; both groups deviated from an expected 1:1 ratio. Males were more prevalent on the plants (1:0.76), whereas females were much more prevalent (1:3.02) among the whiteflies responding to sky light. A higher percentage of the females displaying a phototactic response contained eggs when compared to females remaining on poinsettia (87 v 65%). The two groups of females did not differ significantly in their weights, but males that remained on the plants were heavier than males that responded to sky light. Mark–recapture studies and experiments where phototactic individuals were removed from the population established that the response was short-lived. Whiteflies exhibiting a phototactic response in the glasshouse were more likely to exhibit long-duration, phototactic flights in a vertical flight chamber when compared to individuals that remained on poinsettia (80.7 ± 6.7 v 36.0 ± 5.8% phototactic response; 7.0 ±3.2 v 0.7±0.2min flights). There was also less deviation in flight across the horizontal plane among the individuals that exhibited a positive response to sky light in the glasshouse in comparison to individuals that remained on their host. However, initial rates of climb were not significantly different between the two groups of whiteflies.

Dispersal propensity of green leafhoppers was compared between a tropical species, Nephotettix virescens, and a temperate species, N. cincticeps. The flight ability was measured with tethered flight technique under laboratory conditions (25°C, 16L-8D). The pre-flight period was shorter and the flight duration was longer in N. virescens than in N. cincticeps in both sexes. No significant correlations were found between the flight activity and morphometric characters for either of the two species. The results suggested that dispersal propensity of N. virescens is higher than that of N. cincticeps.
