According to sperm competition models, a male spawning in a disfavoured role should have spermatozoa with higher velocity but shorter longevity compared with a male spawning in a favoured role. Moreover, immunosuppressive androgens are needed to produce both secondary sexual characters and sperm cells. The 'sperm protection' hypothesis suggests that the immunosuppressive action of androgens has evolved to protect haploid spermatozoa, which are antigenic, from autoimmune attacks. Therefore, a male with high sexual ornamentation may be more susceptible to diseases but may possess better quality ejaculate than his less ornamented rival. We studied sexual ornamentation (breeding tubercles), ejaculation quality (sperm concentration, longevity and spermatozoal velocity) and intensity of parasitism in the cyprinid, Rutilus rutilus . Sperm longevity and spermatozoal velocity were positively correlated. Males having elaborated sexual ornamentation had longer-lived sperm and more Myxobolus mülleri parasites in the liver compared with males with low ornamentation. However, no difference was found between males with different degrees of ornamentation with respect to sperm concentration, spermatozoal velocity or other parasites. Keratinized regions were found to occur in the rostral cap, adhesive pad and horny jaw sheaths associated with the lips of Garra lamta, which inhabits fast flowing turbulent hill streams. In these structures, the surface epithelial cells were modified into characteristic keratinized spine‐like or columnar tooth‐like unculi, which would provide firm anchorage for the fish on the substratum and assist the fish in browsing or scraping food materials from it.  相似文献

A 120 kHz echo sounder, with two split-beam transducers, was used horizontally to monitor the behaviour of 0 + roach Rutilus rutilis , from June to August, in field enclosures. 0+ roach outside the vegetated area of the enclosures were registered both as schools and as single swimming fish. Combining echo counting and tracking with direct observation of echograms, an estimate of relative abundance of 0 + roach in the open water volume was obtained also. With this set up, intermediate sized field experiments studying 0 + fish, may be performed during the whole summer season.  相似文献

Prior exposure of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss juveniles to the low-virulence variant of Loma salmonae, L. salmonae SV, spores resulted in a xenoma intensity in the gill filaments fourteen times lower (0·044 v. 0·641 xenomas per filament; P=0·0001) than that observed in the naive controls, challenged with L. salmonae spores, as determined morphometrically by in situ hybridization at the peak of the disease (between 4 and 6 weeks post exposure). The marked degree of reduction in numbers of xenomas that formed after challenge suggests that use of the low-virulence variants should be further considered as a means to protect fish in regions where the parasite is endemic, to protect them during grow out periods.  相似文献

When Notothenia neglecta was exposed to diluted, half strength, sea water for 6 h or 10 days, serum concentrations of Cl-, Na+, K+ and Mg2+ did not differ from those of sea water controls. This indicates that the fish were capable of both short- and long-term regulation. Renal Na+,K+-ATPase activity decreased after a 6 h exposure to diluted sea water, but there were no differences between diluted sea water and controls after 10 days of exposure.  相似文献

A new jawless vertebrate, Cornovichthys blaauweni gen. et sp. nov., is described from a single complete specimen from the Achanarras fish bed at Achanarras Quarry in Caithness, northern Scotland. The Achanarras fish bed consists of lacustrine laminites and was deposited in a major deep-water phase of the Orcadian lake during the deposition of the cyclic Caithness Flagstone Group. The Achanarras fish bed is of Middle Devonian (Eifelian) age. The new animal compares closely with Euphanerops, one ofthe Frasnian 'anaspids' (Hyperoartii) of the Escuminac Formation at Miguasha, Quebec, Canada.  相似文献

Juvenile migratory Galaxias fasciatus juveniles or whitebait were attracted to odours produced by adults. The attraction was dependent on concentration with an upstream movement and attraction to the odour chamber at intermediate level concentrations. At a high concentration the migratory response of whitebait was retarded with the majority of fish not moving upstream but remaining in the lower section of the apparatus. There was no response to odours from adults of other galaxiid species, the inanga G. maculatus or koaro G. brevipinnis at any concentration. These results demonstrate G. fasciatus whitebait have the ability to discriminate species-specific pheromones during their migratory phase, providing evidence of a pheromonal attraction in migratory amphidromous fish which could possibly provide a basis for effective habitat selection.  相似文献

Divergent natural selection is often believed to be the driving force behind phenotypic differentiation in characters related to resource acquisition, leading to trophic polymorphism in fishes. Here we use variation in the fatty acid composition of adipose and muscle tissues to look at differences in resource use by two recently described sympatric morphs of Percichthys trucha , a common freshwater fish of the Andean and Patagonian regions of South America. Because dietary fatty acids are often stored in carnivorous animals with litde modification after consumption, they can be used to infer information about dietary habits of individuals. We found that the two morphs differed in the overall composition of fatty acids in both adipose and muscle tissue, but that there were some differences in how die morphs differed in lakes from the northern vs southern part of the range. Furthermore, we found that certain fatty acids were correlated with diet as determined by gut content analysis. Consumption of anisopteran larvae was highly correlated widi 14:0 in adipose and muscle tissue; and higher levels of longer chain unsaturated fatty acids (i.e. 20 and 22 carbons) were correlated with die presence offish and also amphipods in die diets. Taken togetiier, die results suggest that diere are marked differences in die foraging ecology of die two morphs of P. trucha inhabiting southern Andean lakes.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationships between fish condition and environmental variables in Barbus sclateri from semi-arid freshwater ecosystems in the south-eastern Iberian Peninsula. Two main habitats were studied: semi-arid streams characterized by strong seasonal fluctuations in flow level (droughts and floods) and reservoirs (artificial ecosystems characterised by waters of high conductivity). The mass–length relationships were used to test differences in fish condition between nine stream populations and five reservoir populations of B. sclateri from the Segura River basin. The relationships between seven ecosystem variables (conductivity, oxygen concentration, water temperature, pH, seasonal water flow, submerged vegetation and sub-basin location) and fish condition were analysed. The ecological variables that accounted for most of the variation in fish condition were seasonal water fluctuation and water conductivity. The condition of B. sclateri populations may be a good indicator of fish habitat quality in Mediterranean semi-arid freshwater ecosystems and should be considered when such populations are subjected to sports fishing regulations, recovery plans or any other management programme.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We investigated the effect of temperature on chemical signalling in a predator–prey model system (planktivorous fish and Daphnia galeata ). Life-history changes in Daphnia in response to chemical cues (kairomones) derived from fish have become a paradigm for chemically induced anti-predator defences.
2. As temperature can affect both predator and prey, we carried out two experiments to disentangle these effects. In order to test for temperature effects on the predator, we kept prey at a single temperature and exposed them to kairomones from fish exposed to two different temperatures. Daphnia exhibited a higher intrinsic rate of population increase ( r ) when exposed to fish kairomones produced at high rather than low temperature. Assuming a positive correlation between r (because of an earlier maturation and/or increased clutch sizes) and kairomone concentration, our results suggest that kairomone production increases with rising temperature.
3. In the second experiment, to study the influence of temperature on the prey, Daphnia were kept at two different temperatures and exposed to fish kairomones produced at one constant temperature. We found no interaction between the effects of fish kairomone and temperature on Daphnia life history, suggesting that temperature does not directly alter life-history responses to fish kairomones.
4. Our results suggest that temperature influences Daphnia life history through its effects on fish kairomone concentration, but that temperature does not affect the strength of the response of Daphnia to the presence of fish.  相似文献
