Synopsis The behaviour of three piranha species,Serrasalmus marginatus, S. spilopleura, andPygocentrus nattereri, and their prey fishes was studied underwater in the Pantanal region, Mato Grosso, Brazil. General habits, predatory tactics, feeding behaviour, and social interactions while foraging, as well as defensive tactics of prey fishes were observed.S. marginatus is solitary whereas the other two species live in shoals; their agonistic behaviour varies accordingly, the simplest being displayed by the solitary species. Predatory tactics and feeding behaviour also vary:S. spilopleura shows the most varied diet and highly opportunistic feeding strategy, which includes aggressive mimicry. The solitaryS. marginatus, besides fin and scale-eating, occasionally cleans larger individuals ofP. nattereri. Several cichlid species display defensive tactics clearly related to piranha attacks: tail protecting, watching, and confronting the predator are the most commonly observed behaviours. Piranhas seem to strongly influence use of habitat, social structure, and foraging mode of the fish communities.  相似文献

We have studied the mechanisms of breakdown of 2'-5' oligoadenylates. We monitored the time-courses of degradation of ppp(A2'p5')nA (dimer to tetramer) and of 5'OH-(A2'p5')nA (dimer to pentamer) in unfractionated L1210 cell extract. The 5' triphosphorylated 2'-5' oligoadenylates are converted by a phosphatase activity. However, 2'-5' oligoadenylates are degraded mainly by phosphodiesterase activity which splits the 2'-5' phosphodiester bond sequentially at the 2' end to yield 5' AMP and one-unit-shorter oligomers. The nonlinear least-squares curve-fitting program CONSAM was used to fit these kinetics and to determine the degradation rate constant of each oligomer. Trimers and tetramers, whether 5' triphosphorylated or not, are degraded at the same rate, whereas 5' triphosphorylated dimer is rapidly hydrolyzed and 5'-OH dimer is the most stable oligomer. The interaction between degradation enzymes and the substrate strongly depends on the presence of a 5' phosphate group in the vicinity of the phosphodiester bond to be hydrolyzed; indeed, when this 5' phosphate group is present, as in pp/pA2'p5'A/or A2'/p5'A2'p5'A/, affinity is high and maximal velocity is low. Such a degradation pattern can control the concentration of 2'-5' oligoadenylates active on RNAse L either by limiting their synthesis (5' triphosphorylated dimer is the primer necessary for the formation of longer oligomers) and/or by converting them into inhibitory (e.g., monophosphorylated trimer) or inactive (e.g., nonphosphorylated oligomers) molecules.  相似文献

Synopsis We present ways to test the assumptions of the Petersen and removal methods of population size estimation and ways to adjust the estimates if violations of the assumptions are found. We were motivated by the facts that (1) results of using both methods are commonly reported without any reference to the testing of assumptions, (2) violations of the assumptions are more likely to occur than not to occur in natural populations, and (3) the estimates can be grossly in error if assumptions are violated. We recognize that in many cases two days in the field is the most time fish biologists can spend in obtaining a population estimate, so the use of alternative models of population estimation that require fewer assumptions is precluded. Hence, for biologists operating with these constraints and only these biologists, we describe and recommend a two-day technique that combines aspects of both capture-recapture and removal methods. We indicate how to test: most of the assumptions of both methods and how to adjust the population estimates obtained if violations of the assumptions occur. We also illustrate the use of this combined method with data from a field study. The results of this application further emphasize the importance of testing the assumptions of whatever method is used and making appropriate adjustments to the population size estimates for any violations identified.  相似文献

The levels of a (2'-5')An-dependent endonuclease (RNase L) were determined in extracts prepared from murine L cells and Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) cells by measuring specific binding of protein to a labeled derivative of (2'-5')An, (2'-5')A3[32P]pCp. RNase L levels were found to depend both on interferon (IFN) treatment and on cell growth conditions. Treatment of murine L cells and EAT cells with 100-2,000 IRU IFN beta or IFN gamma resulted in a similar 2-4-fold increase in the levels of RNase L when cells were present at low density. The levels of RNase L were also shown to increase 2-3-fold as cells approached saturation density. Serum-starved cells also displayed relatively high levels of RNase L. RNase L levels in cells maintained at high cell density did not change appreciably following treatment with IFN beta or IFN gamma. Regulation of RNase L levels by cell growth conditions as well as by IFN beta or IFN gamma treatment suggests that RNase L may play an important role in regulating the levels of cellular mRNAs as well as acting to degrade viral RNAs.  相似文献

The changes in cAMP were followed in trout oocytes incubated in vitro after defolliculation performed by either enzymatic or manual dissection. Both defolliculation methods induced a highly significant rise in oocyte cAMP level (4.5 times the basal level of control [follicle-enclosed oocytes], after 6 h). Treatment of defolliculated oocytes with 17α-hydroxy,20β-dihydroprogesterone (17α,20β-OH-P) (10?6 M), which induced oocyte maturation (germinal vesicle breakdown [GVBD]) was able, first, to interrupt the increase of oocyte cAMP level promoted by defolliculation and then to lower this level significantly down to values that still remained higher than folliculated controls. Very low concentrations of 17α,20β-OH-P (1.38–55.6 10?9 M), or physiological doses of testosterone (0.35 10?6 M, in the range found in vivo before ovulation) were able to induce a similar decrease of oocyte cAMP level without inducing GVBD. Under the same experimental conditions estradiol (0.35 10?6 M) exhibited no action. These results suggest that some factor(s) originating in the follicle (FIF), inhibit the oocytes' tendency to accumulate cAMP before the final surge of 17α,20β-OH-P. This factor might be a follicular steroid such as testosterone or nonmaturing concentrations of 17α,20β-OH-P. Moreover our data favour the hypothesis that the final surge of 17α,20β-OH-P could induce distinct intraoocyte mechanisms: the first induces an irreversible blockage of cAMP level before the inhibitory action of the FIF is suppressed by ovulation, and the second mechanism leads to GVBD.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were treated with 17- estradiol to induce vitellogenin synthesis in liver. This led to an increase in liver wet weight and total DNA. After incubation with micrococcal nuclease (EC 3.1.31.1) less soluble chromatin was obtained from nuclei of the estradiol treated than the control fish, but active gene regions were solubilized by the nuclease. Thus, in the estradiol treated fish soluble mononucleosomes contained hybridizable vitellogenin gene sequences. As a result of estradiol treatment the content in total liver of putrescine rose 3-fold, that of spermidine 2-fold, while spermine was unchanged. In muscle no significant changes were observed. The regulatory functions of polyamines during gene expression were investigated by binding (14C)spermine to isolated liver nuclei depleted of endogenous polyamines. The number of binding sites was higher in nuclei of estradiol treated than control fish. (14C)spermine associated preferentially with micrococcal nuclease insensitive chromatin. Thus, the high content of putrescine and spermidine in liver supported the view of polyamine accumulation in proliferating tissues. Synopsis Experimental data on snapping behavior of laboratory reared zährte, Vimba elongata, indicate that this species chooses between different food searching methods. If visibility is good, mainly directed snaps are employed for immediate food location. However, under conditions of reduced visibility undirected snapping and sampling methods are adopted. In the field, zährte may use sampling to acquire foraging benefits from stochastically distributed, hidden resources, like sediment dwelling prey. In the experiments this species continued to sample the bottom even in situations without any chance of prey detection. It is therefore concluded that zährte's searching decisions, apart from incorporating external information on prey occurrence, are controlled by internal expectations of long term benefits derived from sampling.  相似文献

The influences of diets having different fatty acid compositions on the fatty-acid content, desaturase activities, and membrane fluidity of rat liver microsomes have been analyzed. Weanling male rats (35–45 g) were fed a fat-free semisynthetic diet supplemented with 10% (by weight) marine fish oil (FO, 12.7% docosahexaenoic acid and 13.8% eicosapentaenoic acid), evening primrose oil (EPO, 7.8% γ-linolenic acid and 70.8% linoleic acid) or a mixture of 5% FO-5% EPO. After 12 weeks on the respective diets, animals fed higher proportions of (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (FO group) consistently contained higher levels of 20:3(n-6), 20:5(n-3), 22:5(n-3), and 22:6(n-3), and lower levels of 18:2(n-6) and 20:4(n-6), than those of the EPO (a rich source of (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids) or the FO + EPO groups. Membrane fluidity, as estimated by the reciprocal of the order parameter SDPH, was higher in the FO than in the EPO or the FO + EPO groups, and the n-6 fatty-acid desaturation system was markedly affected.  相似文献

Expression of the c-fos proto-oncogene by ovine conceptuses was analyzed by Northern and slot blots and indirect immunohistofluorescence in relation to the expression of the embryonic interferon-alpha (oTP) during implantation. c-fos was expressed initially in the trophoblast, and then in the allantois, when this tissue began to develop (day 17). In the embryonic tissues, the c-fos proto-oncogene was weakly expressed up to day 22 and increased thereafter. In the trophoblast, the expression of c-fos proto-oncogene was transient, occurring when the oTP gene was transcribed at a maximal level at the beginning of implantation (days 14-15), and decreased thereafter, following the pattern of oTP gene expression. This decline is due essentially to the arrest of c-fos and oTP gene expression by the trophoblastic cells which established cellular contacts with the uterine epithelium during the implantation process.  相似文献
