The traditional beef production in the South of Portugal is based on a discontinuous growth (DG) system that requires lower external inputs and could enhance meat quality and financial returns to cattle producers. This system allows farmers to take advantage of the bull’s compensatory growth when the pasture is abundant and finishes the cattle on concentrates for 2 to 3 months before slaughter. The fast gain rate before slaughter could be a valuable strategy to improve tenderness and to reduce its inconsistency in beef production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of production system (continuous growth (CG) v. DG) on longissimus thoracis muscle properties from Alentejana bulls. In total, 40 Alentejana male calves were allocated to two distinct feeding regimes: in the CG system, animals were fed concentrate plus hay and slaughtered at 18 months of age, whereas in the DG system, animals were fed on hay until 15 months of age and then fed the same diet provided to the CG group until 24 months of age. The DG system had a positive impact on meat tenderness (P<0.001) and global acceptability (P<0.001). DG bulls had greater fibre cross-sectional area (CSA) of glycolytic fibres (P<0.05) and relative area of the muscle (RA) occupied by type IIX fibres (P<0.01) and greater levels of α-actinin (P<0.05) and myosin light chain 2 (P<0.01) proteins, and pH24h (P<0.01) than CG bulls. The latter had greater CSA of type I (P<0.05) and type IIA (P<0.01) and greater RA of type IIA (P<0.05) and oxidative (P<0.05) than CG bulls. The compensatory growth production system had a positive impact on meat tenderness and global acceptability, overcoming the negative effects of slaughter of the bulls at a later age. The DG beef system could be a worthwhile strategy of beef production in Mediterranean areas due to the low-quality pasture in summer.  相似文献

Stable nitroxide radicals have found wide applications in chemistry and biology and they have some potential applications in medicine due to their antioxidant properties. Nitrocellulose filters impregnated with lipid-like substances are used as an imitation of biomembranes and could be used as a controlled drug release vehicle, while experiments with hollow fibres can be useful in the modelling of a drug delivery via blood vessels. This paper describes mechanisms of the nitroxide transport in four different model systems, i.e. a) exit of nitroxide into aqueous solution from porous nitrocellulose filters, impregnated with organic solvents, b) transport of nitroxides through the impregnated membrane from one into another aqueous solution, c) transport of nitroxides from bulk phase of organic solvents through the impregnated membrane into aqueous phase with ascorbic acid, and d) transport of nitroxides from liquid organic phase into aqueous solution through porous hollow fibres. The results are analysed in terms of mass transfer resistance of a membrane, organic and aqueous phase, based on nitroxide diffusion and distribution coefficients. Ascorbic acid reduced nitroxides in water and enhanced the rate of their transfer due to the decrease of transport resistance of unstirred aqueous layers. It is demonstrated that in the case of biomembranes the rate limiting step could be the transport through unstirred aqueous layers and membrane/water interface.  相似文献

Compared with fish of a slow-growing strain, fast-growing rainbow trout exhibited significantly smaller white fibre diameters, throughout development from hatching to 24 cm body length, although possessing similar total number of fibres. In contrast, in red muscle, no differences were observed in fibre diameter between the two strains, but the fast growing fish showed a significantly higher number of red fibres. The differences in growth rate between the two strains were related to the mean white fibre diameter and were found to be matched by proportional adjustments in recruitment of new fibres to the growing muscle. Thus, the largest and fastestgrowing strain showed evidence of sustained higher recruitment of muscle fibres that endowed this strain with the potential to maintain rapid somatic growth for longer and accomplish greater muscle growth.  相似文献

Incorporation of cover crops into cropping systems may contribute to a more efficient utilization of soil and fertilizer P by less P-efficient crops through exudation of P-mobilizing compounds by the roots of P-efficient plant species. The main objective of the present work was to test this hypothesis. First a method has been developed which allows the quantification of organic anion exudation from individual cluster roots formed by P-deficient white lupin (Lupinus albus L.). Lupin plants were grown in nutrient solution at 1 μM P and in a low P loess in small rhizotrons. Organic anions exuded from intact plants grown in nutrient solution were collected from individual cluster roots and root tips sealed in small compartments by an anion-exchange resin placed in nylon bags (resin-bags). Succinate was the dominant organic anion exuded followed by citrate and malate. The mean of citrate exudation-rate was 0.06 pmol mm−1 s−1 with exudation highly dependent on the citrate concentration and on the age of the cluster roots. Exudates from cluster roots and root tips grown at the soil surface (rhizotron-grown plants) were collected using overlayered resin–agar (resin mixed with agar). Citrate exudation from cluster roots was 10 times higher than that from root tips. Fractionation of P in the cluster root rhizosphere-soil indicates that white lupin can mobilize P not only from the available and acid-soluble P, but also from the stable residual soil P fractions. In pot experiments with an acid luvisol derived from loess low in available P, growth of wheat was significantly improved when mixed-cropped with white lupin due to improved P uptake. Both in mixed culture and in rotation wheat could benefit from the P mobilization capacity of white lupin, supporting the hypothesis above. Nine tropical leguminous cover crops and maize were grown in a pot experiment using a luvisol from Northern Nigeria low in available P. All plant species derived most of their P from the resin and bicarbonate-extractable inorganic P. Organic P (Po) accumulated particularly in the rhizosphere of all plant species. There was a significant negative correlation between the species-specific rhizosphere acid phosphatase activity and Po accumulation. Growth and P uptake of maize grown in rotation after legumes were enhanced indicating that improved P nutrition was a contributing factor. Conflicts arising from the consumption of anthropogenic foods by wildlife are increasing worldwide. Conventional tools for evaluating the spatial distribution pattern of large terrestrial mammals that consume anthropogenic foods have various limitations, despite their importance in management to mitigate conflicts. In this study, we examined the spatial distribution pattern of crop‐foraging sika deer by performing nitrogen stable isotope analyses of bone collagen. We evaluated whether crop‐foraging deer lived closer to agricultural crop fields during the winter and spring, when crop production decreases. We found that female deer in proximity to agricultural crop fields during the winter and spring were more likely to be crop‐foraging individuals. Furthermore, the likelihood of crop consumption by females decreased by half as the distance to agricultural crop fields increased to 5–10 km. We did not detect a significant trend in the spatial distribution of crop‐foraging male deer. The findings of spatial distribution patterns of crop‐foraging female deer will be useful for the establishment of management areas, such as zonation, for efficient removal of them.  相似文献

Residual force depression (rFD) and residual force enhancement (rFE) are intrinsic contractile properties of muscle. rFD is characterized as a decrease in steady-state isometric force following active shortening compared with a purely isometric contraction at the same muscle length and level of activation. By contrast, isometric force is increased following active lengthening compared to a reference isometric contraction at the same muscle length and level of activation; this is termed rFE. To date, there have been no investigations of rFD and rFE in human muscle fibres, therefore the purpose of this study was to determine whether rFD and rFE occur at the single muscle fibre level in humans. rFD and rFE were investigated in maximally activated single muscle fibres biopsied from the vastus lateralis of healthy adults. To induce rFD, fibres were activated and shortened from an average sarcomere length (SL) of 3.2–2.6 μm. Reference isometric contractions were performed at an average SL of 2.6 μm. To induce rFE, fibres were actively lengthened from an average SL of 2.6–3.2 μm and a reference isometric contraction was performed at an average SL of 3.2 μm. Isometric steady-state force was lower following active shortening (p < 0.05), and higher following active lengthening (p < 0.05), as compared to the reference isometric contractions. We demonstrated rFD and rFE in human single fibres which is consistent with previous animal models. The non-responder phenomenon often reported in rFE studies involving voluntary contractions at the whole human level was not observed at the single fibre level.  相似文献
