Field observations on the relationship between male mating success and emergence timing in the funnel-web spider,Agelena limbata, were conducted.Agelena limbata is an annual species and adult males appear slightly earlier than adult females in July. As males deposit a copulatory plug
at the female epigynum after copulation, copulation with virgin females is important to males. The number of copulations in
males with virgin females, which strongly correlates with the longevity of males and the number of females that males courted,
did not correlate with the emergence timing of males. Early emerged males and females were significantly larger in size than
later ones, but the correlation coefficient between the emerged date and the cephalothorax width was not strong. Males that
emerged earlier did not have any advantage in copulating with larger and more fecund females. Furthermore, virgin females
first copulated on average 7.9 days after their final molt and the mortality rate of adult males increased after the final
molt. These factors may favor the smaller degree of protandry in male emergence timing inA. limbata. 相似文献
Pollination success in female trees was determined for a population of Neolitsea dealbata (R. Br.) Merr., a locally abundant dioecious tree pollinated by small, unspecialized insects in northern Queensland rain forest, Australia. The population consisted of a clustered group of trees with a mean male-to-female distance of 4.5 m and more isolated individuals, including females more than 90 m away from the nearest pollen source. A map of all reproductive trees was produced to determine accurate male-to-female distances. The size of the pollen source available to females was defined as a function of the distance to the nearest ten male trees and their sizes (male neighbourhood index). The rate of pollen movement to females was measured by counting pollen tubes (and the number of tubes per style) in female trees 6 days after the commencement of population flowering. The pollination rate decreased steeply to less than half when the nearest male was only 6.5 m away. Although pollen reached a female 330 m away from the nearest pollen source, only 10% of receptive flowers had been pollinated. The short flowering period (2–3 weeks) combined with the the slow rate of pollen movement means that a large proportion of flowers in isolated trees are unpollinated, confirming an earlier finding that isolated females set fewer fruits than gregarious females. The reliability of pollen transfer to females was determined by quantifying insects and their pollen loads trapped at female trees with a range of male neighbourhood indices. Quantities of insects and pollen were significantly correlated with the size of the male neighbourhood index, indicating a strong density-dependent response by vectors to flowering. Pollen was also collected from insect visitors to non-flowering trees. Females with large male neighbourhood indices received more pollen than non-flowering trees with equivalent male neighbourhood indices. However, when the male neighbourhood indices were small for both female and non-flowering trees, the changces of pollinators encountering female and non-flowering trees were similar, suggesting random movements of pollinators in sparse-flowering sub-populations. The dioecious breeding system, brief, synchronous flowering period, clustered population structure and random, opportunistic foraging behaviour of vectors interacted in a way that reduced reproduction in relatively isolated trees. These results demonstrate a mechanism for differential breeding success between trees in natural populations and emphasize the possible impact of logging regimes on pollen flow between trees. Large interconspecific distances in species-rich environments may have been a factor in the selection for synchronous flowering between trees in outcrossing tree species with generalist insect pollinators. 相似文献
A 2-year study of three natural populations of the distylousJasminum fruticans showed that mean fruit and seed production were significantly greater in shortstyled plants (thrums) than in long-styled
plants (pins). In this study, we investigated the role of four sequential factors which may differentially influence fruit
and seed set in the two floral morphs: (1) differences in flowering phenology, (2) a limitation of pollen transfer towards
pins, (3) a differential capacity of the two morphs to act through famale and male function and (4) differential fruit abortion
in the two morphs. Fruit set was significantly influenced by differences in flowering phenology although there were no differences
in flowering time between the two morphs. supplementary pollinations in a natural population significantly increased fruit
set and reduced the difference in fruit set between the two morphs in relation to controls, indicating a limitation on pollen
transfer which was most severe towards pin stigmas. In reciprocal crosses, seed set was significantly dependent on the paternal
and maternal identity of the pin parent. There was no significant variation among thrums for their performance as male or
female parent. Furthermore, individual pin plants with relatively high percentage seed set as female parents gave poor seed
set as male parents and vice-versa. Whereas fruit removal had no effect on seed number in thrum plants, a greater proportion
of viable seeds were produced on pin plants which were left to naturally mature their fruits than on pins which had fruits
artificially removed, suggesting the occurrence of selective fruit abortion in pins but not in thrums. The initially greater
maternal fitness of thrums due to their greater success as pollen recipients may thus be opposed by increased viable seed
set in the pins due to factors acting after the pollination stage. The relative reproductive success of floral morphs in the
distylousJ. fruticans is thus differentially influenced by ecological factors occurring at different stages of the reproductive process. 相似文献
The effect of the cumulus on in vitro fertilization in bovines was examined. Follicular oocytes were cultured in medium 199 plus OCS and extra granulosa cells. Frozen-thawed bovine spermatozoa was separated by the swim-up technique, suspended in Talp medium and capacitated with heparin. Fresh sheep and goat semen was incubated for 4 h at room temperature, washed and spermatozoa were then suspended in Talp medium and capacitated by incubation at 38.5 °C and 5% CO2 in air and heparin.
In experiment 1, cumulus-enclosed oocytes, denuded oocytes and denuded oocytes plus additional cumulus cells were incubated with a reduced concentration of bovine spermatozoa for 8 or 18 h. In Experiment 2, cumulus enclosed and denuded oocytes were incubated with bovine spermatozoa for 4, 6, 8 and 18 h using a sperm concentration adjusted to secure high fertilization rates. In Experiment 3, cumulus-enclosed and denuded bovine oocytes were incubated with either sheep or goat spermatozoa for 18 h. Fertilization rates were then calculated and compared statistically. The results showed that 1) the cumulus improved the fertilization rate only when cumulus cells were associated with the oocytes 2) the timing of sperm penetration was not modified by the cumulus and started at 4 h after sperm incubation and 3) the presence of the cumulus improved the heterologous fertilization rate only when sheep spermatozoa were used. The results suggest that the cumulus improves fertilization rate by providing a capacitation-inducing mechanism and by facilitating the interaction between capacitated spermatozoa and the zona pellucida surface. 相似文献
A sediment bioassay is being developed using several marine benthic invertebrates to assess the effects of parental transfer of contaminants to the gametes. In this preliminary study, the emphasis was placed on developing methods for the in vitro fertilization of lugworm, Arenicola marina, oocytes.Lugworms exposed to contaminated sediments in outdoor mesocosms were brought to the laboratory, just before the beginning of the spawning period. The reliability of an in vitro fertilization procedure was tested by varying several parts of the method. Main results are that eggs and embryos may be physically damaged by cleaning over a sieve. However, as no negative effects were observed when leaving eggs and sperm together for 24 h, the sperm need not be washed off until the embryos are preserved for further examination later on.A first, incomplete screening of the effects of contaminated harbour dredged sediments indicated some effect on the reproductive success. 相似文献
We present a stochastic dynamic programming model of the contributionof stored food to winter survival. Using the acorn woodpecker(Melanerpes formtcivorus) as a model organism, we demonstratethat a hoard of small energetic value can impart considerableimprovement in the probability of surviving the winter and soimprove fitness. With this model we hope to resolve Koenig andMumme's paradox, that acorn woodpeckers expend much time andeffort to create and maintain hoards of acorns which provideno more that 16% of their energetic needs over the period inwhich they are used. We further demonstrate that the contributionof hoarded acorns to survival depends on the variability inforaging outcome, independently of the energetic value of thehoard in absolute terms. We point out that the results applyin principle to all hoarding animals and suggest a number offurther elaborations of the model. 相似文献
It is now generally recognized that clutch size affects morethan offspring number. In particular, clutch size affects asuite of traits associated with offspring reproductive performance.Optimal clutch size is therefore determined not by the numericallymost productive clutch but by the clutch that maximizes collectiveoffspring reproductive success. Calculation of optimal clutchsize thus requires a consideration of ecological factors operatingduring an intergenerational time frame, spanning the lifetimeof the egglaying adult and the lifetimes of her offspring. Theoptimal clutch cannot define reproductive values in advance, but instead requires that the strategy chosen is the best responseto the set of reproductive values that it itself generates. In this article, we introduce methods for solving this problem, based on an iterative solution of the equation characterizingexpected lifetime reproductive success. We begin by consideringa semelparous organism, in which case lifetime reproductivesuccess is a function only of the state of the organism. Foran iteroparous organism, lifetime reproductive success dependsupon both state and time, so that our methods extend the usualstochastic dynamic programming approach to the evaluation oflifetime reproductive success. The methods are intuitive andeasily used. We consider both semelparous and iteroparous organisms, stable and varying environments, and describe how our methodscan be employed empirically. 相似文献
Hymenopteran insects are a unique group of animals in which arrhenotokous reproduction (haploid males develop from unfertilized
eggs) is a rule. Males produce sperm through a non-reductional maturation division. A sawfly species,Athalia rosae ruficornis Jakovlev (Tenthredinidae, Symphyta, Hymenoptera), has been introduced as a new experimental material for studies on genetics
and developmental biology. Basic features relating to the potential usefulness of the species in elucidating some of the important
genetic and developmental biological problems are described. 相似文献
1 Males of Hermetia comstocki Williston compete for territorial control of certain agaves and yuccas. Winners copulate with females that visit these plants solely to acquire a mate.
2 Males vary in body weight by more than an order of magnitude and larger flies almost always defeat smaller ones in aerial contests for control of landmark territories.
3 The mean body size (as measured by wing-length) was significantly greater for males retaining residency at a site for at least one hour compared to males unable to do so. Likewise, males able to return to a perch site in the study area on more than one day were larger on average than males unable to do so.
4 Male preferences for landmark territories remained similar across years. Large males dominated the perch landmarks most likely to be occupied by males and most likely to be visited by females.
5 Despite the fighting and territorial advantages enjoyed by large males, the mean size of males found mating with females was not significantly larger than that of the general population.
6 The apparent failure of large males to secure a statistically significant mating advantage may be a statistical consequence of the small sample size of males observed mating. On the other hand, any mating advantage of large males may be reduced because (a) receptive females visit many different landmarks, (b) females mate with the first male they encounter at a landmark, regardless of his size, (c) there are usually many vacant landmarks available for smaller males, and (d) even popular territories are often open to small males, thanks to the low site-tenacity of territory owners.
