Aim (1) To explore the impact of land use, climate and environmental heterogeneity on fern species richness along a complete elevational gradient, and (2) to evaluate the relative importance of the three groups of variables within different elevational intervals. Location A temperate mountain region (55,507 km2) of Italy on the southern border of the European Alps divided into a regular grid of 1476 cells (grain 35.7 km2). Methods We applied multiple regression (spatial and non‐spatial) to determine the relative influence of the three groups of variables on species richness, including variation partitioning at two scales. We considered the whole gradient (all 1476 cells) to explain the overall elevational pattern of species richness, and we grouped the cells into elevational intervals of 500 m in order to evaluate the explanatory power of the predictors within different zones along the gradient. Results Species richness showed a hump‐shaped pattern with elevation, forming a plateau between 800 and 1500 m. The lowest species richness was found in warm and relatively dry disturbed lowlands. Moving upwards, the greatest species richness was found in forest‐dominated mid‐elevations with high environmental heterogeneity. At high elevations dominated by open natural habitats, where temperature and precipitation were relatively low, species richness declined but less sharply than in the lowlands. Although it was impossible to separate the effects of the three groups of predictors along the whole gradient, the analysis of separate elevational intervals shed light on their relative importance. The decline of species richness within lowlands was mainly related to a combined effect of deforestation and low environmental heterogeneity. In the middle part of the gradient, habitat heterogeneity and topographic roughness were positively associated with species richness. The richness decline within high‐elevation areas was related mostly to climatic constraints. Main conclusions Human impact due to land‐use modifications strongly affects the elevational pattern of species richness. It is therefore increasingly important to adopt a multiple‐hypothesis approach, taking anthropogenic effects explicitly into account when describing ecological processes along elevational gradients.  相似文献

Abstract: On the southeastern Ivory Coast, two coconut plantations were compared with regard to the frequency of the epiphytic fern Platycerium stemaria on coconut trees as influenced by plant collecting for commercial purposes. At each of the two sites, 250 coconut trees were investigated for the presence of P. stemaria and signs of collecting activity. General species richness of vascular epiphytes at the study sites was low, with only three other epiphytic ferns ( Asplenium sp., Microgramma owariensis, Phymatodes scolopendria ) being present. At study site no. 1, which was located directly behind several flower stalls offering P. stemaria for sale, the number of coconuts bearing living P. stemaria was significantly lower than at site no. 2 with no flower stalls in the immediate surroundings. At site no. 1, the frequency of P. stemaria was lowest in the neighbourhood of the flower stalls and increased with distance. Within a distance of less than 50 m from the flower stalls, ca. 70 % of the coconuts showed signs of P. stemaria collecting activity. Compared with site no. 1, the number of palm trees with living P. stemaria at site no. 2 was considerably higher ( ca. 20 %) and only three coconut trees showed signs of Platycerium collection. Over much of the Ivorian rain forest region where the forest has been cut or converted into agricultural land, plantation trees are important phorophytes (in particular cocoa trees). In many West African regions plantation trees form the last remaining sites for vascular epiphytes, which often occur with considerable abundance. In the Ivory Coast, the collecting of P. stemaria in coconut plantations causes locally a drastic decline in the population size. However, much more threatening to the long-term maintenance of epiphyte communities in plantations is their conversion into non-tree plantations (e.g., pineapples, bananas) or their replacement by urban structures and tourist facilities.  相似文献

Isozymes were used to study genetic variation in the clonal ferns Culcita macrocarpa and Woodwardia radicans in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula, their northern distributional limit. Despite their high chromosome numbers, both species were isozymic diploids. In C. macrocarpa all 18 resolved loci were monomorphic, with the same allele in all ramets from all populations. In W. radicans only two of the 16 interpreted loci were polymorphic, with two alleles per locus; ramet-level genotypes showed Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, indicating an intergametophytic mating system; the number of genets distinguished was 1–3 per population; and among-population variation was low (F ST = 0.231), suggesting effective gene flow (i.e. spore exchange). More generally, the very low (W. radicans, H T = 0.012) or zero (C. macrocarpa) genetic diversity detected in the present study may be due to genetic drift associated with the reduction of populations in the last glaciation, and to founder effects in the subsequent Holocene expansion.  相似文献

对海南铜铁岭热带低地雨林地区的蕨类植物区系进行了研究,结果表明铜铁岭共有蕨类植物117种,隶属40科、71属.含6种以上的科有水龙骨科、金星蕨科、铁角蕨科、叉蕨科、陵齿蕨科、膜蕨科和凤尾蕨科,它们是组成铜铁岭蕨类植物的优势科.根据植物的现代地理分布,本区的蕨类植物属和种的分布区类型中热带成分分别占非世界分布的95.31%和75.21%,说明了该地区蕨类植物区系与热带植物区系有着广泛的联系,热带性较强;本区蕨类植物大多数是林荫湿生或附生类型.七指蕨种群是该区珍稀蕨类植物,应该加强保护.  相似文献

Most attention to size‐time trade‐offs of insects has focused on herbivore risk, with considerably less attention paid to parasitoids. Here, we focus on parasitoid risk, comparing the fates of unparasitised herbivore hosts and parasitised hosts that protect the parasitoids. Success of a koinobiont parasitoid (host grows after parasitisation) depends on maintaining a delicate balance with its host, thereby ensuring its own survival while the host grows. To evaluate growth rate–mortality rate relationships of host and parasitoid, we compared several aspects of the growth, phenology, and behaviour of unparasitised fern moth [Herpetogramma theseusalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)] larvae and larvae parasitised by Alabagrus texanus (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a solitary koinobiont (one parasitoid per host) wasp. Host larvae feed and construct shelters on sensitive fern, Onoclea sensibilis L. (Dryopteridaceae). Alabagrus texanus parasitise early‐instar moths in late summer, which overwinter in their host, emerging in mid‐summer to pupate and eclose. During the autumn following hatching and the immediately following spring, parasitised and unparasitised moth larvae did not differ in size, took similar time to choose between satisfactory and unsatisfactory foods, and built similar shelters. Prior to any other changes noted, more parasitised than unparasitised larvae also died when severely starved. Parasitised larvae subsequently grew less and pupated later than unparasitised ones (small size, slow growth), but consumed similar amounts of food. Although the numerically dominant parasitoid of fern moths, we concluded that Atexanus do not efficiently exploit their hosts.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Horsetails (Equisetopsida) diverged from other extant eusporangiate monilophytes in the Upper Palaeozoic. They are the only monilophytes known to contain the hemicellulose mixed-linkage (1 → 3, 1 → 4)-β-d-glucan (MLG), whereas all land plants possess xyloglucan. It has been reported that changes in cell-wall chemistry often accompanied major evolutionary steps. We explored changes in hemicelluloses occurring during Equisetum evolution.

Methods

Hemicellulose from numerous monilophytes was treated with lichenase and xyloglucan endoglucanase. Lichenase digests MLG to di-, tri- and tetrasaccharide repeat-units, resolvable by thin-layer chromatography.

Key Results

Among monilophytes, MLG was confined to horsetails. Our analyses support a basal trichotomy of extant horsetails: MLG was more abundant in subgenus Equisetum than in subgenus Hippochaete, and uniquely the sister group E. bogotense yielded almost solely the tetrasaccharide repeat-unit (G4G4G3G). Other species also gave the disaccharide, whereas the trisaccharide was consistently very scarce. Tetrasaccharide : disaccharide ratios varied interspecifically, but with no consistent difference between subgenera. Xyloglucan was scarce in Psilotum and subgenus Equisetum, but abundant in subgenus Hippochaete and in the eusporangiate ferns Marattia and Angiopteris; leptosporangiate ferns varied widely. All monilophytes shared a core pattern of xyloglucan repeat-units, major XEG products co-chromatographing on thin-layer chromatography with non-fucosylated hepta-, octa- and nonasaccharides and fucose-containing nona- and decasaccharides.

Conclusions

G4G4G3G is the ancestral repeat-unit of horsetail MLG. Horsetail evolution was accompanied by quantitative and qualitative modification of MLG; variation within subgenus Hippochaete suggests that the structure and biosynthesis of MLG is evolutionarily plastic. Xyloglucan quantity correlates negatively with abundance of other hemicelluloses; but qualitatively, all monilophyte xyloglucans conform to a core pattern of repeat-unit sizes.  相似文献

Aim To describe the spatial variation in pteridophyte species richness; evaluate the importance of macroclimate, topography and within‐grid cell range variables; assess the influence of spatial autocorrelation on the significance of the variables; and to test the prediction of the mid‐domain effect. Location The Iberian Peninsula. Methods We estimated pteridophyte richness on a grid map with c. 2500 km2 cell size, using published geocoded data of the individual species. Environmental data were obtained by superimposing the grid system over isoline maps of precipitation, temperature, and altitude. Mean and range values were calculated for each cell. Pteridophyte richness was related to the environmental variables by means of nonspatial and spatial generalized least squares models. We also used ordinary least squares regression, where a variance partitioning was performed to partial out the spatial component, i.e. latitude and longitude. Coastal and central cells were compared to test the mid‐domain effect. Results Both spatial and nonspatial models showed that pteridophyte richness was best explained by a second‐order polynomial of mean annual precipitation and a quadratic elevation‐range term, although the relative importance of these two variables varied when spatial autocorrelation was accounted for. Precipitation range was weakly significant in a nonspatial multiple model (i.e. ordinary regression), and did not remain significant in spatial models. Richness is significantly higher along the coast than in the centre of the peninsula. Main conclusions Spatial autocorrelation affects the statistical significance of explanatory variables, but this did not change the biological interpretation of precipitation and elevation range as the main predictors of pteridophyte richness. Spatial and nonspatial models gave very similar results, which reinforce the idea that water availability and topographic relief control species richness in relatively high‐energy regions. The prediction of the mid‐domain effect is falsified.  相似文献

More than 50 specimens of permineralized fertile pinnules with abaxially borne sporangia have been discovered in calcareous marine nodules from the Upper Cretaceous (Coniacian) Comox Formation from the Eden Main localities on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Isolated pinnules 1.6–3.0 mm wide × 1.6–2.8 mm long are lobed and abaxially enrolled to form irregular globose structures. Pyriform sporangia 216–300 μm wide × 360–468 μm long occur in two rows on the abaxial surface of pinnule lobes. Sporangia have an apical annulus of 15–18 cells. Spores are tetrahedral and trilete, 33–42 μm in diameter, with straight to concave interradial sides, laesurae extending nearly to the equator, and a psilate exine. Spores are assignable to the sporae dispersae genus Deltoidospora. Fertile pinnules are compared to fossils of Anemia poolensis and two previously described species of Paralygodium, and show closest similarities to P. vancouverensis from the Eocene of British Columbia. The Cretaceous Eden Main specimens differ in number of pinnule lobes and their morphology and are described as a new taxon: P. meckertii sp. nov. This discovery extends the Cretaceous geographic range of Paralygodium from Japan to North America and adds to our knowledge of the diversity of extinct schizaeaceous ferns.  相似文献
