Polynyas are areas of open water surrounded by sea ice and are important sources of primary production in high-latitude marine ecosystems. The magnitude of annual primary production in polynyas is controlled by the amount of exposure to solar radiation and sensitivity to changes in sea-ice extent. The degree of coupling between primary production and production by upper trophic-level consumers in these environments is not well understood, which prevents reliable predictions about population trajectories for species at higher trophic levels under potential future climate scenarios. In this study, we find a strong, positive relationship between annual primary production in an Antarctic polynya and pup production by ice-dependent Weddell seals. The timing of the relationship suggests reproductive effort increases to take advantage of high primary production occurring in the months after the birth pulse. Though the proximate causal mechanism is unknown, our results indicate tight coupling between organisms at disparate trophic levels on a short timescale, deepen our understanding of marine ecosystem processes, and raise interesting questions about why such coupling exists and what implications it has for understanding high-latitude ecosystems. 相似文献

The expression level of a gene is often used as a proxy for determining whether the protein or RNA product is functional in a cell or tissue. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance to understand the global distribution of gene expression levels, and to be able to interpret it mechanistically and functionally. Here we use RNA sequencing (RNA‐seq) of mouse Th2 cells, coupled with a range of other techniques, to show that all genes can be separated, based on their expression abundance, into two distinct groups: one group comprised of lowly expressed and putatively non‐functional mRNAs, and the other of highly expressed mRNAs with active chromatin marks at their promoters. These observations are confirmed in many other microarray and RNA‐seq data sets of metazoan cell types. 相似文献

ObjectiveThe association between zinc intake and the risk of kidney stones remains controversial. We examined the associations between dietary zinc intake, supplemental zinc intake and serum zinc levels and the prevalence of kidney stones in adults.MethodsAdult participants from the 2007–2016 NHANES were included. Restricted cubic splines were adopted to assess the dose-response relationships.ResultsDietary zinc intake was linearly associated with the prevalence of kidney stones (Pfor non-linearity = 0.50), and the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of kidney stones were 0.75 (0.51–1.04) for 10 mg/day, 0.65 (0.39-0.97) for 20 mg/day, 0.53 (0.30-0.94) for 30 mg/day and 0.45 (0.22-0.95) for 40 mg/day. The linear relationship was also observed among women and overweight/obese individuals. No association was found between supplemental zinc intake and the prevalence of kidney stones. A non-linear relationship was found between serum zinc levels and the prevalence of kidney stones (Pfor non-linearity = 0.02), and the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of kidney stones were 0.52 (0.33-0.82) for 70 ug/dL, 0.43 (0.24-0.77) for 90 ug/dL, 0.56 (0.32-0.98) for 110 ug/dL and 0.77 (0.37–1.62) for 130 ug/dL. The non-linear relationship was also observed among men and overweight/obese individuals.ConclusionsDietary zinc intake and serum zinc levels were inversely associated with the prevalence of kidney stones in adults, and there may be effect modification by participant sex and body mass index. 通过田间试验,研究在设施菜地上施用不同剂量的鸡粪有机肥对土壤-植物系统中重金属的累积、重金属有效性和土壤微生物群落结构的影响,进一步探讨土壤微生物群落结构与土壤重金属之间的相关关系。结果表明,与对照相比,施用有机肥可提高小白菜地上部生物量,其中施肥量为60 t/hm2时值最大,增幅为59.92%;小白菜地上部Cd、Cr、Cu、Zn和As含量均大幅增加,但Pb含量无明显变化。土壤重金属Cd、Cr、Cu、Zn和As的全量均随鸡粪有机肥施加量的增加而增大,最高增幅分别为21.30%、21.58%、17.40%、19.40%和17.43%,出现明显的累积现象;施用有机肥均增加了土壤Cd、Cr、Cu、Zn和As的有效态含量,而Pb的全量和有效态含量无显著变化;除重金属Pb外,不同重金属元素全量与有效态含量均显著正相关,其中元素Zn的全量与有效态含量相关性最强。磷脂脂肪酸(PLFA)分析结果表明,土壤中含量较高的PLFA为16:0、18:1ω7c、10Me16:0和18:1ω9c,土壤微生物总PLFA和各类群PLFA含量均呈现M0.5 > M1 > CK > M2 > M4;相关性分析结果表明,土壤Cu、As全量和Cd、Cr、Cu、As有效态含量与微生物总PLFA和各类群PLFA含量均呈现显著负相关关系,其中有效态Cr和Cu含量对微生物群落结构的影响最为显著。 相似文献

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) was studied in the agarophyte Gracilariopsis tenuifrons. Similar SOD activity (130 ± 9U mg-1) was observed in material from different regions of SouthAmerica, from different phases of the life cycle (gametophytes andtetrasporophytes), and from apical and basal sections of the thallus.In alga grown under a light-dark cycle, SOD activity in samples takenat different times exhibited a diurnal rhythm. The activity measured duringthe day phase was twice as much as during the night phase. This rhythm didnot persist under constant light, indicating light regulation of SOD activity.SOD activity was tested in algae submitted to different light intensities anddifferent wavelengths. Abstract. 1. The effects of resource levels, thermal microclimate, and seasonal oviposition patterns on fecundity and survivorship in the pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii (Coq.), were examined at a northern Wisconsin bog over the course of 2 years. Wyeomyia smithii are bivoltine at this locality, thereby enabling the study of summer and overwintering generations separately.
2. Nutrient resources of W. smithii were not limiting and there was no indication of density-dependent survivorship or fecundity.
3. Oviposition rates were highest in young, large pitchers and individual mosquitoes appeared to allocate only a few eggs to any one leaf.

Between species, variation in sperm size has been related to male–female coevolution and male–male competition. In contrast, variation within species is poorly understood. A particular case of intraspecific sperm-size variation occurs in sperm-heteromorphic species, where males produce distinct sperm morphotypes, usually only one of which is fertile. This allows to investigate sperm size variation under different selection regimes. Nonfertile morphotypes, whose role is aside from fertilization, may have other functions, and this may be reflected by changes in developmental processes and a different phenotype compared to fertile sperm. We show that the intraspecific coefficient of variation in sperm length is up to four times lower for fertile than nonfertile morphotypes across 150 sperm-heteromorphic species (70 butterfly, 71 moth, 9 diopsid fly species). This is in agreement with a previous study on 11 species in the Drosophila obscura group. Significantly lower variation in fertile than nonfertile sperm morphometry may result from fertilization-related selection for optimal sperm size, novel functions of nonfertile sperm, or from tighter control of fertile sperm development. More data are needed to clarify the consequences and adaptive significance of within-morph variation, and its consistent pattern across sperm-heteromorphic insects.Co-ordinating editor: Hurst 相似文献

Gossip is a subject that has been studied by researchers from an array of disciplines with various foci and methods. We measured
the content of language use by members of a competitive sports team across 18 months, integrating qualitative ethnographic
methods with quantitative sampling and analysis. We hypothesized that the use of gossip will vary significantly depending
on whether it is used for self-serving or group-serving purposes. Our results support a model of gossip derived from multilevel
selection theory that expects gossip to serve group-beneficial rules when rewards are partitioned at the group level on a
scale that permits mutual monitoring. We integrate our case study with earlier studies of gossip conducted by anthropologists,
psychologists, and management researchers.
