Female tsetse flies, Glossina pallidipes Austen, caught in artificial refuges were subjected to ovarian dissection and analysed for levels of fat, residual dry weight (RDW) and haematin. There were rather small proportions of flies in ovarian categories 0 and 1, in part due to large losses in the immature and teneral stages at the hottest time of year. The distribution of the female catch among pregnancy days was close to uniform. The wet and dry weights (WW and DW) and RDW of eggs, larvae and pupae increased by 0.821, 0.303 and 0.204 mg respectively, with each mm3 increase in volume. Water accounted for 71.7% of the fat-free WW, and fat for 32.7% of the DW. Between birth and ovulation, fat increased from 2 to 4 mg and RDW from 7 to 11 mg; thoracic RDW increased by 2.5mg and changed little thereafter. Fat levels increased 3.5mg by day 6 of pregnancy, but only 0.5 mg thereafter. Over the same periods RDW corrected to zero haematin (CRDW) increased by 1 and 8 mg respectively. Full-term fat and CRDW levels were 8.2 and 19.4 mg respectively. Cumulative haematin frequencies formed a smooth curve with a slope that increased continuously. The raw data were well fitted by a model where feeding rates increased exponentially and capture probability was independent of haematin content. The mean feeding interval was 60 h; feeding probabilities of >0.9/day were only found in flies that had failed to feed for>72 h. In early pregnancy, fat levels declined with haematin for flies that had fed>36 h previously; by days 5-7 fat levels were maintained at a constant high level for 60 h post-feeding. Fat-haematin graphs for female tsetse cannot be used to estimate rates of fat utilization. Traps sample tsetse with below-average fat and RDW in early and late pregnancy respectively. Refuge samples are less biased than those from traps; they give a better picture of the dynamics of pregnancy in normal flies and facilitate the explanation of existing anomalies.  相似文献

The relationship of resistin levels with obesity remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine resistin levels in prepubertal children and adolescents and evaluate their association with anthropometric parameters and body composition. The study population included 420 randomly selected 6–8-year-old children and 712 children aged 12–16 years. Anthropometric data were measured and body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios were calculated. Body composition was assessed using an impedance body composition analyzer. Serum resistin levels were determined using a multiplexed bead immunoassay. Resistin levels were not significantly different between sexes. No significant differences in serum resistin concentrations were found between obese, overweight, and normal weight children at any age, and no significant correlations were observed between resistin concentrations and weight or BMI. However, resistin levels showed a significant positive correlation with fat mass in 12–16-year-old children, particularly in girls. In addition to describing serum resistin levels in prepubertal children and adolescents, our study suggests that resistin is related to body fat rather than to BMI in adolescents.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal concentrations of free choline in the lumen of the small intestine of the uninfected and Hymenolepis diminuta-infected rat were investigated. In the unfed infected or uninfected rat, the choline concentrations ranged from 500 μM in the duodenum to 20 μM in the posterior ileum, with some segments in infected rats containing significantly higher choline levels than in uninfected rats. Following feeding, choline levels were significantly elevated to approximately 3 mM by 6 h, although these concentrations fell rapidly in transit down the intestine. By 12 h the choline levels were similar to those in the unfed rat. An initial small shift in the worm biomass toward the duodenum after feeding was followed by a redistribution of biomass along the length of the small intestine. The worm biomass, however, had little or no effect on the choline levels. The high concentrations of free choline observed in the anterior regions of the intestine are postulated to be predominantly determined by nutritional intake while the concentrations in the posterior region may in part be determined by blood choline levels. The high levels of choline indicate that choline is not limiting to support growth of the worms.  相似文献

Concentration and distribution of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were determined in 26 soil profiles (n = 78) of northern Kentucky in response to environmental concerns about increasing anthropogenic inputs in a fast-paced urbanizing area. The selected sites represent alluvial, glacial till or residual soils that have not received any biosolid- or industrial-waste applications. Mean concentrations of Zn (53.8 mg kg?1) and Ni (25.9 mg kg?1) were the highest in the soil profile, whereas Cd (0.21 mg kg?1) was present only in trace amounts. All metals were within the low to middle range of baseline concentrations reported for US soils, suggesting minimal anthropogenic inputs. The distribution of Cu, Cr, Ni, and Zn increased with soil depth, whereas Cd and Pb concentrations were unaffected throughout the soil profile. Alluvial soils had the highest overall metal accumulations, particularly in surface soil horizons, indicating potential metal enrichment through depositional processes. The presence of a fragipan horizon or depth to bedrock did not significantly affect metal retention. Single correlation and multiple regression analyses indicated OM and pH as the most influential soil parameters for metal retention, followed by cation exchange capacity (CEC) and CEC/clay. Single correlations among metals suggested strong covariance of Zn with most metals throughout the soil profile, but weaker for Pb and Ni.  相似文献

Abstract The first synopsis of Mesozoic weevils (Curculionoidea: Coleoptera) is presented. Changes of family, genera and species abundance during the Mesozoic revealed three distributional patterns. The Jurassic (Karatau) fauna was dominated by the Nemonychidae. During the Early Cretaceous (beginning at the Jurassic/Cretaceous border), the Ithyceridae was the prevalent group with a significant role played by the Nemonychidae. In the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian and Turonian), the major groups were the Curculionidae and Brentidae. Obviously, the change of weevil fauna during this period was due to the expansion of the angiosperms, which provided multiple niches in their vegetative and reproductive organs for weevil development.  相似文献

The use of morphology and phylogenomic data in metazoan systematics. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91 : 11–19 Animal phylogenies have been traditionally inferred by using the character state information derived from the observation of a diverse array of morphological and anatomical features, but the incorporation of molecular data into the toolkit of phylogenetic characters has shifted drastically the way researchers infer phylogenies. A main reason for this is the ease at which molecular data can be obtained, compared to, e.g., traditional histological and microscopical techniques. Researchers now routinely use genomic data for reconstructing relationships among animal phyla (using whole genomes or Expressed Sequence Tags) but the amount of morphological data available to study the same phylogenetic patterns has not grown accordingly. Given the disparity between the amounts of molecular and morphological data, some authors have questioned entire morphological programs. In this review I discuss issues related to the combinability of genomic and morphological data, the informativeness of each set of characters, and conclude with a discussion of how morphology could be made scalable by utilizing new techniques that allow for non‐intrusive examination of large amounts of preserved museum specimens. Morphology should therefore remains a strong field in evolutionary and comparative biology, as it continues to provide information for inferring phylogenetic patterns, is an important complement for the patterns derived from the molecular data, and it is the common nexus that allows studying fossil taxa with large data sets of molecular data.  相似文献

Abstract

Quasi-palindromic sequences (AT)XN12(AT)Y present in HS2 (hypersensitive site 2) of the human β-globin locus are known to be significantly associated with increased fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels. High HbF levels in some adults arise due to pathological conditions such as sickle cell disease and β-thalassemia. However, elevated levels of HbF are also associated with a reducing morbidity and mortality in patients with β-thalassemia and thus ameliorate the severity of the disease. Using gel-electrophoresis, ultraviolet (UV)-thermal denaturation, and circular dichroism (CD) techniques, we demonstrated that it exhibits a hairpin-duplex equilibrium. Intramolecular species (hairpin) were observed in both low and high salt concentrations in gel assay studies displaying the unusual stability of intramolecular species even at the high counter-ion concentration. The unusual stability of hairpin secondary structures was also demonstrated by the monophasic nature of the melting profiles for the oligonucleotides which persisted at low as well as high salt and oligomer concentrations. Change in CD spectra as a function of oligomer concentration indicates that the bimolecular duplex formation is selectively favored over monomolecular hairpin formation at and above 9 µM oligomer concentration. Thus, we hypothesize that imperfect inverted repeat sequence (AT)XN12(AT)Y of HS2 of β-globin gene LCR forms the unusually stable hairpins which may result in the formation of a cruciform structure that may be recruited for binding by various nuclear proteins that could result in elevated HbF levels.
