Aim We examined changes in the species diversity and faunal composition of arctiid moths along a successional gradient at a fine spatial scale in one of the world's hot spots for moths, the Andean montane rain forest zone. We specifically aimed to discover whether moth groups with divergent life histories respond differentially to forest recovery. Location Southern Ecuador (province Zamora‐Chinchipe) along a gradient from early successional stages to mature forest understorey at elevations of 1800–2005 m a.s.l. Methods Moths were sampled with weak light traps at 21 sites representing three habitat categories (early and late succession, mature forest understorey), and were analysed at species level. Relative proportions were calculated from species numbers as well as from specimen numbers. Fisher's α was used as a measure of local diversity, and for ordination analyses non‐metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) was carried out. Results Proportions of higher arctiid taxa changed distinctly along the successional gradient. Ctenuchini (wasp moths) contributed more strongly to ensembles in natural forest, whereas Lithosiinae (lichen moths) decreased numerically with forest recovery. Arctiid species diversity (measured as Fisher's α) was high in all habitats sampled. The three larger subordinated taxa contributed differentially to richness: Phaegopterini (tiger moths) were always the most diverse clade, followed by Ctenuchini and Lithosiinae. Local species diversity was higher in successional habitats than in forest understorey, and this was most pronounced for the Phaegopterini. Dominance of a few common species was higher, and the proportion of species represented as singletons was lower, than reported for many other tropical arthropod communities. NMDS revealed a significant segregation between ensembles from successional sites and from forest understorey for all larger subordinated taxa (Phaegopterini, Ctenuchini, Lithosiinae). Abandoned pastures held an impoverished, distinct fauna. Faunal segregation was more pronounced for rare species. Ordination axes reflected primarily the degree of habitat disturbance (openness of vegetation, distance of sites from mature forest) and, to a lesser extent, altitude, but not distance between sampling sites. Main conclusions Despite the geographical proximity of the 21 sites and the pronounced dispersal abilities of adult arctiid moths, local ecological processes were strong enough to allow differentiation between ensembles from mature forest and disturbed sites, even at the level of subfamilies and tribes. Differences in morphology and life‐history characteristics of higher arctiid taxa were reflected in their differential representation (proportions of species and individuals) at the sites, whereas patterns of alpha and beta diversity were concordant. However, concordance was too low to allow for reliable extrapolation, in terms of biodiversity indication, from one tribe or subfamily to the entire family Arctiidae. Phaegopterini (comprising more putative generalist feeders during the larval stages) benefited from habitat disturbance, whereas Ctenuchini (with host‐specialist larvae) were more strongly affiliated with forest habitats.  相似文献

The role of carboxylic residues at the high-affinity, Mn-binding site in the ligation of iron cations blocking the site [Biochemistry 41 (2000) 5854] was studied, using a method developed to extract the iron cations blocking the site. We found that specifically bound Fe(III) cations can be extracted with citrate buffer at pH 3.0. Furthermore, citrate can also prevent the photooxidation of Fe(II) cations by YZ. Participation of a COOH group(s) in the ligation of Fe(III) at the high-affinity site was investigated using 1-ethyl-3-[(3-dimethylamino)propyl] carbodiimide (EDC), a chemical modifier of carboxylic amino acid residues. Modification of the COOH groups inhibits the light-induced oxidation of exogenous Mn(II) cations by Mn-depleted photosystem II (PSII[−Mn]) membranes. The rate of Mn(II) oxidation saturates at ≥10 μM in PSII(−Mn) membranes and ≥500 μM in EDC-treated PSII (−Mn) samples. Intact PSII(−Mn) membranes have only one site for Mn(II) oxidation via YZ (dissociation constant, Kd = 0.64 μM), while EDC-treated PSII(−Mn) samples have two sites (Kd = 1.52 and 22 μM; the latter is the low-affinity site). When PSII(−Mn) membranes were incubated with Fe(II) before modifier treatment (to block the high-affinity site) and the blocking iron cations were extracted with citrate (pH 3.0) after modification, the membranes contained only one site (Kd = 2.3 μM) for exogenous Mn(II) oxidation by YZ radical. In this case, the rate of electron donation via YZ saturated at a Mn(II) concentration ≥15 μM. These results indicate that the carboxylic residue participating in Mn(II) coordination and the binding of oxidized manganese cations at the HAZ site is protected from the action of the modifier by the iron cations blocking the HAZ site. We concluded that the carboxylic residue (D1 Asp-170) participating in the coordination of the manganese cation at the HAZ site (Mn4 in the tetranuclear manganese cluster [Science 303 (2004) 1831]) is also involved in the ligation of the Fe cation(s) blocking the high-affinity Mn-binding site.  相似文献

Sojourners visiting high-altitude (HA) (>2500 m) are susceptible to HA disorders; on the contrary, HA natives are well adapted to the extreme hypoxic environment. High aldosterone levels are believed to be involved in HA disorders, we, therefore, envisaged role of CYP11B2 gene variants in HA adaptation and therefore investigated the -344T/C, intron-2 conversion (Iw/Ic), K173R, and A5160C polymorphisms. In addition, polymorphisms in AGT, AT1R, ATP1A1, ADRB2, and GSTP1 genes were also investigated. The study comprised of 662 subjects, comprising of 426 Himalayan highlanders (HLs) and 236 lowlanders (LLs). The -344T/C and K173R polymorphisms were found to be in complete linkage disequilibrium. The wild-type allele -344T and combination of wild-type homozygous genotypes between -344T/C, Iw/Ic, and A5160C polymorphisms, containing all the six wild-type alleles were over-represented in the HLs (p < 0.0001, and p = 0.008, respectively). The wild-type haplotypes -344T-Iw, -344T-5160A, and -344T-Iw-5160A also showed over-representation in the HLs (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, greater the number of wild-type alleles, lower was the ARR (p < 0.05). The genotype distribution in remaining genes did not differ. To conclude, the over-representation of wild-type -344T allele, genotype combinations and haplotypes of CYP11B2, and their correlation with lower aldosterone levels associate with HA adaptation in the HLs. Such an allelic presentation in sojourners may help them cope with adverse HA environment.  相似文献

The overall objective of this project was to evaluate levels of airborne fungi present after a mold remediation project and determine the effectiveness of this remediation using airborne mold levels to determine the success of these projects. Andersen N6 (viable) and Air-O-Cell (non-viable) sampling techniques were utilized. Both test methodologies demonstrated that levels of mold in the successfully remediated portions of buildings were significantly different (p<0.05) from the levels found in non-complaint and outdoor samples from the same building, respectively. Conversely, levels in unsuccessful remediation projects were not significantly different (p>0.05) to non-complaint and outdoor samples. Both techniques showed high variability in the overall mold levels found between sites; however, the ratios of specific mold groups in each area tested, within the same site, were remarkably similar. The use of either viable or non-viable mold sampling techniques after mold remediation is essential for determining the success of such projects. This project demonstrates the relationship between mold levels and the success of a mold remediation projects, and will assist in the interpretation of data collected at the conclusion of a mold remediation project.  相似文献

  • 1 Available information on the consumption of wild meat in West and Central Africa is reviewed. We show that mammals are the prime source of bushmeat, and that ungulates and rodents make up the highest proportion of biomass extracted.
  • 2 We present data on current knowledge of extraction patterns of wild mammals in West and Central Africa, and evidence that at current off‐take levels, within the range states, mammals as bushmeat are being depleted on an unprecedented scale. Extraction rates are orders of magnitude higher there than in comparable ecosystems like the Amazon, and much less likely to be sustainable.
  • 3 However, basic knowledge of the biology of harvestable tropical moist forest mammals, and the consequences of hunting on mammalian communities, which permits accurate estimation of maximal production rate (the excess of growth over replacement rate), is largely unavailable, and this hinders estimation of hunting quotas and sustainability. Comparisons are made with the existing information available on Amazon basin mammals and hunting patterns reported there.

All evidence currently available indicates that obligatory sterile eusocial castes only arose via the association of lifetime monogamous parents and offspring. This is consistent with Hamilton''s rule (brs > roc), but implies that relatedness cancels out of the equation because average relatedness to siblings (rs) and offspring (ro) are both predictably 0.5. This equality implies that any infinitesimally small benefit of helping at the maternal nest (b), relative to the cost in personal reproduction (c) that persists throughout the lifespan of entire cohorts of helpers suffices to establish permanent eusociality, so that group benefits can increase gradually during, but mostly after the transition. The monogamy window can be conceptualized as a singularity comparable with the single zygote commitment of gametes in eukaryotes. The increase of colony size in ants, bees, wasps and termites is thus analogous to the evolution of multicellularity. Focusing on lifetime monogamy as a universal precondition for the evolution of obligate eusociality simplifies the theory and may help to resolve controversies about levels of selection and targets of adaptation. The monogamy window underlines that cooperative breeding and eusociality are different domains of social evolution, characterized by different sectors of parameter space for Hamilton''s rule.  相似文献

利用FACE(free air carbon dioxide enrichment)技术平台,在两种氮肥施用(低氮,LN和常规氮,NN)水平下,研究CO2浓度升高对水稻和小麦收获后根际和非根际土壤可溶性碳、有机磷、速效磷和速效钾的影响.结果表明,相对于对照CO2浓度处理,高CO2浓度处理在显著增加作物生物量的前提下,土壤速效磷和速效钾不但没有降低反而增加,增加幅度小麦季大于水稻季,根际大于非根际;水稻季土壤可溶性碳含量增加,且NN水平下水稻和小麦季进入土壤的可溶性碳增加,导致土壤有机磷降低幅度低于LN水平,且水稻季根际土壤大于非根际土壤,有机磷的降低是保证有效磷升高的一个重要因素,增加氮肥施用将有利于土壤有机磷的增加,对维持土壤磷的供给有积极作用,有利于作物对高CO2浓度的持续响应.  相似文献

通过室外受控实验,研究了在不同沉积物类型及不同水体营养水平条件下东太湖四角菱的生长特性.结果表明:沉积物类型对菱的各项生长指标均有显著影响.在营养相对丰富的湖泥中,菱的相对生长率、同化根与吸收根的生物量以及株高增长率分别为相对贫瘠的岸泥的4.3、2.4、7.3、2.5倍,菱盘直径增长率在湖泥中为16.5%,在岸泥中则为负增长(-13.2%).水体营养盐浓度升高在一定程度上也促进了菱的生长,而且营养盐浓度(尤其是磷)升高对菱生长的促进作用在岸泥中要比在湖泥中显著得多.探讨了沉积物类型与水体营养水平对菱生长的作用机理,并认为水体富营养化的加剧及湖泊沼泽化所造成的氮、磷等营养物质在沉积物中的大量积累是东太湖菱种群迅速扩张的重要原因之一.  相似文献

The relation between the incident electromagnetic field strength and both the whole‐body and the local specific absorption rate (SAR) was investigated for typical heterogeneous exposure scenarios for frequencies relevant for mobile communication. The results were compared to results from plane wave exposure. Heterogeneous exposure arises from multiple path propagation of the electromagnetic waves to the location of interest. It is shown that plane wave exposure does not represent worst‐case exposure conditions. When the electric field strength arising at plane wave exposure is compared to the electric field strength averaged over the volume of the human body occurring during multipath exposure, 12% of all heterogeneous cases examined represent worse exposure conditions than plane wave exposure for whole‐body exposure at 946 MHz, 15% at 1840 MHz, and 22% at 2140 MHz. The deviation between plane wave and heterogeneous whole‐body SAR ranges from ?54% to 54%. For partial‐body SAR averaged over 10 g of tissue, a range from ?93% to 209% was found when comparing multiple wave exposure to single incoming plane waves. The investigations performed using the Visible Human as phantom showed that the basic restrictions are met as long as the reference levels are not exceeded. However, this must not be necessarily the case when different phantoms are used to perform similar investigations because recent studies demonstrated that reference levels might not be conservative when phantoms of children are used. Therefore, the results of this work indicate the need to extend the investigations to numerical simulations with additional human phantoms representing parts of the human population having different anatomy and morphology compared to the phantom used within the frame of this project. The effect of chronic ethanol consumption on cerebral cortical activity of Na,K-ATPase was determined in Long-Evans (LE) rats fed an ethanol-containing diet beginning at different stages of development. Na,K-ATPase activity was operationally resolved into α1 and α2/3 isozyme activities. There was no significant difference in Na,K-ATPase activities before and after alcohol consumption in the preparations from adult rats. However, for rats beginning alcohol consumption as adolescents, the α2/3 activity was significantly elevated following chronic alcohol consumption. Both LE and Sprague–Dawley rats showed this same selective increase in cortical α2/3 activity when rats began alcohol consumption as juveniles. The shift in cortical α2/3 activity was not observed in cerebellum or subcortical forebrain and was reversible when rats were fed ethanol throughout the normal adolescent period and then withdrawn and tested 2 weeks later (during the adult period). Levels of isoform-specific mRNA were determined in preparations of cerebral cortices of rats showing elevated α2/3 isozyme activities. In these preparations, isoform specific α2 and α3 mRNA was significantly elevated. There was no effect of ethanol feeding on cortical α1 mRNA. These findings indicate that the longer term effects of ethanol on the developing brain include elevated Na,K-ATPase activity and a mechanism that is pre-translational and isoform specific.  相似文献
