The Wolbachia bacterium is currently one of most prevalent endosymbionts of arthropods. The bacterium has drawn much attention because of its ability to induce reproductive anomalies, such as cytoplasmic incompatibility, feminization, male killing, and parthenogenesis, in various invertebrates. This review focuses on the basic biology of Wolbachia, its infection phenotypes, and its potential future applications.  相似文献

Summary

Implantation of ovarian tissue into androgenic gland ablated male prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) induced the development of ovigerous and ovipositing setae and brood chambers, suggesting that in females, these secondary sexual characteristics are induced by the ovary. This model system has potential for the study of morphological changes associated with breeding in the Decapoda.  相似文献

Wolbachia, cytoplasmically inherited endosymbionts of arthropods, are known to hijack their host reproduction in various ways to increase their own vertical transmission. This may lead to the selective sweep of associated mitochondria, which can have a large impact on the evolution of mitochondrial lineages. In Japan, two different Wolbacahia strains (wCI and wFem) are found in two sister species of pierid butterflies, Eurema mandarina and Eurema hecabe. In both species, females infected with wCI (C females) produce offspring with a nearly 1:1 sex ratio, while females infected with both wCI and wFem (CF females) produce all‐female offspring. Previous studies have suggested the historical occurrence of hybrid introgression in C individuals between the two species. Furthermore, hybrid introgression in CF individuals is suggested by the distinct mitochondrial lineages between C females and CF females of E. mandarina. In this study, we performed phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA markers of E. hecabe with previously published data on E. mandarina. We found that the nuclear DNA of this species significantly diverged from that of E. mandarina. By contrast, mitochondrial DNA haplotypes comprised two clades, mostly reflecting Wolbachia infection status rather than the individual species. Collectively, our results support the previously suggested occurrence of two independent historical events wherein the cytoplasms of CF females and C females moved between E. hecabe and E. mandarina through hybrid introgression.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Bisexual flowers of Carica papaya range from highly regular flowers to morphs with various fusions of stamens to the ovary. Arabidopsis thaliana sup1 mutants have carpels replaced by chimeric carpel–stamen structures. Comparative analysis of stamen to carpel conversions in the two different plant systems was used to understand the stage and origin of carpeloidy when derived from stamen tissues, and consequently to understand how carpeloidy contributes to innovations in flower evolution.

Methods

Floral development of bisexual flowers of Carica was studied by scanning electron microscopy and was compared with teratological sup mutants of A. thaliana.

Key Results

In Carica development of bisexual flowers was similar to wild (unisexual) forms up to locule initiation. Feminization ranges from fusion of stamen tissue to the gynoecium to complete carpeloidy of antepetalous stamens. In A. thaliana, partial stamen feminization occurs exclusively at the flower apex, with normal stamens forming at the periphery. Such transformations take place relatively late in development, indicating strong developmental plasticity of most stamen tissues. These results are compared with evo-devo theories on flower bisexuality, as derived from unisexual ancestors. The Arabidopsis data highlight possible early evolutionary events in the acquisition of bisexuality by a patchy transformation of stamen parts into female parts linked to a flower axis-position effect. The Carica results highlight tissue-fusion mechanisms in angiosperms leading to carpeloidy once bisexual flowers have evolved.

Conclusions

We show two different developmental routes leading to stamen to carpel conversions by late re-specification. The process may be a fundamental aspect of flower development that is hidden in most instances by developmental homeostasis.  相似文献

Summary The interstitial cells of the pseudohermaphrodite rat testis are both hypertrophic and hyperplastic. The cytoplasm is characterized by smooth endoplasmic reticulum which is abundant and variable in form. Mitochondria are numerous and large with tubular cristae and occasional inclusions. Structural features of the Leydig cells indicate potential for increased steroid synthesis. The presence of large numbers of mast cells in the intertubular area is confirmed.Small seminiferous tubules lack advanced germinal elements. Additional connective tissue and myoepithelial layers produce a thickening of the limiting membrane. Some myoepithelial cells are atypical with an electron translucent cytoplasm and nuclei with dense peripheral chromatin. No spermatogenic cells beyond the cap phase of the spermatid are observed. The cytoplasm of Sertoli cells contains large lipid droplets and degenerating germ cells. The authors are greatly indebted to Drs. A. J. Stanley, J. E. Allison, and L. G. Gumbreck for kindly providing the animals for this study.  相似文献

Summary Sex reversed mice heterozygous for the X-linked Tfm mutation are mosaics with respect to the Tfm locus. In the androgen-dependent striated urethral muscle, nuclei coding for the intact testosterone receptor protein and nuclei coding for the defective Tfm receptor protein are incorporated in the same multinucleate muscle fibres. The intact testosterone receptor complex can thus be expected to enter the Tfm nuclei. Our measurements show that the fibre diameters of the mosaic muscle form a homogeneous population, intermediate in size between induced male and non-inducible Tfm phenotypes. By contrast, the nuclear size shows a bimodal distribution, the subpopulations corresponding to Tfm and wild type nuclei. The results indicate that the Tfm nuclei are not activated by the intact testosterone receptor complex.  相似文献

A direct correlation between the feminizing process of male plants of Mercurialis annua by benzylaminopurine and the disappearance of male-specific peroxidases was established. In order to understand the process of hormonal regulation of the sexual differentiation and peroxidase activity, two peroxidase cDNA clones were selected from a male flower cDNA library with degenerated oligonucleotide probes encoding a peroxidase-specific site. These clones contained three peroxidase-specific sequences and an Eco RI restriction site. The two Eco RI fragments of one cDNA clone were subcloned and used as probes to analyse the expression of corresponding gene(s). The northern blot analysis showed hybridization on a single mRNA band with a predominant expression in male flowers. The feminizing treatment with a cytokinin induced the progressive disappearance of the hybridization signal in correlation with the disappearance of male specific isoperoxidases.  相似文献

Tfm Lac, a new occurrence of the X-linked mutation testicular feminization, has been isolated in a stock of mice and mapped to the same region as the originalTfm H mutation. We compared these two mutants to determine if there are differences in their putative residual androgen receptors or androgen responsiveness. Such differences have been reported forTfm mutations in humans. We found no evidence for induction of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity inTfm Lac despite androgen treatment for up to 3 weeks. This is in agreement with findings forTfm H. Both of these mutants expressed small amounts of androgen binding activity which shared some properties with the normal androgen receptors in mouse kidney. The binding was distinguishable between the two mutants, however, as determined by hormone saturation experiments utilizing DNA-cellulose chromatography. These findings confirm the independence of the two mutations and are consistent with their being allelic: both result in severe deficits of androgen binding and response. This work was supported by NIH Grants HD17666 and HD20327 (TOF), research grants from the March of Dimes-Birth Defects Foundation (TOF), and a postdoctoral National Research Service Award (J.A.P.) in Endocrinology (AM07337).  相似文献

It was previously argued that infection by parasitic sex-ratio distorters can enhance both random genetic drift and genetic influx from outside the population. However, these two enhancement effects have been studied independently. Here, we study the equilibrium frequencies of alleles (neutral and selected) in a mainland-island scenario where both genetic drift and genetic influx are enhanced due to infection by a cytoplasmic feminizing element. Interestingly, our model reveals that at neutral loci, the two effects almost exactly cancel each other out, such that infection has only a very minor effect on the equilibrium frequency distributions of alleles. At selected loci, in contrast, the two effects are unbalanced and infection has conspicuous effects. Despite the cryptic effects of infection at neutral loci, we demonstrate that temporally spaced data can be used to evaluate the effect of infection on genetic drift and that on gene flow separately.  相似文献
