Infertility and hypercytolipidemic utero-ovarian involution are recognized consequences of the diabetes-obesity syndrome (DOS) in C57BL mice with either obese (ob/ob) or diabetes (db/db) single gene mutations. We have evaluated the interdependent deleterious influences of both mutation types and differences in the genomic background on utero-ovarian dysfunction in C57BL mice. Control (+/?) C57BL mice were matched with littermate ob/ob and db/db mutants expressed on either the /KsJ or /6 background. Both ob/ob and db/db mutations increased body weights of /KsJ and /6 background strains relative to +/? groups. In contrast, uterine and ovarian weights were depressed by ob/ob and db/dbmutations relative to +/?, regardless of the background strain, but especially when expressed on the /KsJ background. Functionally, both ob/ob and db/db mutations induced hyperglycemic-hyperinsulinemic states coupled with depressed serum estradiol-17-β and progesterone concentrations when expressed on a /KsJ background. Microscopic analysis of utero-ovarian tissue samples revealed marked hypercytolipidemia in the follicular granulosa and endometrial epithelial tissue layers of both ob/oband db/db mutant groups relative to normal +/? cytoarchitecture. The db/db mutation consistently promoted more severe hypercytolipidemic profiles than the ob/obmutation, regardless of background strain. Thus, the severity of utero-ovarian hypercytolipidemia following the expression ofob/ob and db/db mutations in C57BL mice is influenced, or moderated, by the genomic background on which the mutation is expressed.  相似文献

We review possible effects of sexual selection upon sperm morphology, and sexual skin morphology, in primates. Comparative morphometric studies, involving 31 species representing 21 primate genera, revealed a positive relationship between volume of the sperm midpiece, occurrences of multiple partner matings by females, and large relative testes sizes, which indicate sperm competition. The midpiece houses the mitochondria required to power sperm motility. Hence, sperm competition may have influenced the evolution of increased mitochondrial loading in species where females mate with multiple partners during the fertile period. Females of some Old World monkey species and female chimpanzees exhibit large estrogen-dependent sexual skin swellings during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Studies of mandrills support the conclusion that swellings act primarily as sexually attractive, graded signals and that swelling size may indicate current reproductive quality. Measurements of the genitalia in chimpanzees indicate a secondary function for female swellings. The swelling increases the operating depth of the female's vagina by 50% during the fertile phase of her cycle. Males have evolved long, filiform penes capable of placing sperm close to the os cervix during competitive multipartner matings. This may exemplify how morphologic specializations in females can influence the coevolution of advantageous genitalic specializations in males: the phenomenon that Eberhard (1985) dubbed cryptic female choice.  相似文献

Sexual selection theory predicts that paternal quality should drive female investment in progeny. We tested whether polyandrous female side-blotched lizards, Uta stansburiana, would adjust within-clutch progeny investment according to sire phenotypes. In two different years, polyandrous females selectively used sperm from larger sires to produce sons and used sperm from smaller sires to produce daughters. This cryptic sperm choice had significant effects on progeny survival to maturity that were consistent with sexually antagonistic effects associated with sire body size. Large sires produced sons with high viability and small sires produced daughters with high viability. These results are consistent with our previous findings that alleles for male body size have different fitness effects in male and female progeny. Breeding experiments in the laboratory indicate that results from the wild are more likely due to female choice than biased sperm production by males. Our results demonstrate highly refined gender-specific female choice for sperm and indicate that sire body size may signal the quality of sons or daughters that a sire will produce.  相似文献

The sexy-sperm hypothesis predicts that females obtain indirect benefits for their offspring via polyandy, in the form of increased fertilization success for their sons. I use a quantitative genetic approach to test the sexy-sperm hypothesis using the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus. Previous studies of this species have shown considerable phenotypic variation in fertilization success when two or more males compete. There were high broad-sense heritabilities for both paternity and polyandry. Patterns of genotypic variance were consistent with X-linked inheritance and/or maternal effects on these traits. The genetic architecture therefore precludes the evolution of polyandry via a sexy-sperm process. Thus the positive genetic correlation between paternity in sons and polyandry in daughters predicted by the sexy-sperm hypothesis was absent. There was significant heritable variation in the investment by females in ovaries and by males in the accessory gland. Surprisingly there was a very strong genetic correlation between these two traits. The significance of this genetic correlation for the coevolution of male seminal products and polyandry is discussed.  相似文献

Negative frequency-dependent mating success--the rare male effect--is a potentially powerful evolutionary force, but disagreement exists as to whether previous work, focusing on copulating species, has robustly demonstrated this phenomenon. Noncopulating sessile organisms that release male gametes into the environment but retain their eggs for fertilization may routinely receive unequal mixtures of sperm. Although promiscuity seems unavoidable it does not follow that the resulting paternity obeys 'fair raffle' expectations. This study investigates frequency dependence in the mating of one such species, the colonial ascidian Diplosoma listerianum. In competition with an alternative sperm source males fathered more progeny if previously mated to a particular female than if no mating history existed. This suggests positive frequency-dependent selection, but may simply result from a mate order effect involving sperm storage. With fewer acclimation matings, separated by longer intervals, this pattern was not found. When, in a different experimental design, virgin females were given simultaneous mixtures of gametes at widely divergent concentrations, sperm at the lower frequency consistently achieved a greater than expected share of paternity--a rare male effect. A convincing argument as to why D. listerianum should favour rare sperm has not been identified, as sperm rarity is expected to correlate very poorly with ecological or genetic male characteristics in this pattern of mating. The existence of nongenetic female preferences at the level of colony modules, analogous in effect to fixed female preferences, is proposed. If visible to selection, indirect benefits from increasing the genetic diversity of a sibship appear the only likely explanation of the rare male effect in this system as the life history presents virtually no costs to multiple mating, and a near absence of direct (resource) benefits, whereas less controversial hypotheses of female promiscuity (e.g. trade up, genetic incompatibility) do not seem appropriate.  相似文献

Sperm competition games: sperm selection by females   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We analyse a co-evolutionary sexual conflict game, in which males compete for fertilizations (sperm competition) and females operate sperm selection against unfavourable ejaculates (cryptic female choice). For simplicity, each female mates with two males per reproductive event, and the competing ejaculates are of two types, favourable (having high viability or success) or unfavourable (where progeny are less successful). Over evolutionary time, females can increase their level of sperm selection (measured as the proportion of unfavourable sperm eliminated) by paying a fecundity cost. Males can regulate sperm allocations depending on whether they will be favoured or disfavoured, but increasing sperm allocation reduces their mating rate. The resolution of this game depends on whether males are equal, or unequal. Males could be equal: each is favoured with probability, p, reflecting the proportion of females in the population that favour his ejaculate (the 'random-roles' model); different males are favoured by different sets of females. Alternatively, males could be unequal: given males are perceived consistently by all females as two distinct types, favoured and disfavoured, where p is now the frequency of the favoured male type in the population (the 'constant-types' model). In both cases, the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) is for females initially to increase sperm selection from zero as the viability of offspring from unfavourable ejaculates falls below that of favourable ejaculates. But in the random-roles model, sperm selection decreases again towards zero as the unfavourable ejaculates become disastrous (i.e. as their progeny viability decreases towards zero). This occurs because males avoid expenditure in unfavourable matings, to conserve sperm for matings in the favoured role where their offspring have high viability, thus allowing females to relax sperm selection. If sperm selection is costly to females, ESS sperm selection is high across a region of intermediate viabilities. If it is uncostly, there is no ESS in this region unless sperm limitation (i.e. some eggs fail to be fertilized because sperm numbers are too low) is included into the model. In the constant-types model, no relaxation of sperm selection occurs at very low viabilities of disfavoured male progeny. If sperm selection is sufficiently costly, ESS sperm selection increases as progeny viability decreases down towards zero; but if it is uncostly, there is no ESS at the lowest viabilities, and unlike the random-roles model, this cannot be stabilized by including sperm limitation. Sperm allocations in the ESS regions differ between the two models. With random roles, males always allocate more sperm in the favoured role. With constant types, the male type that is favoured allocates less sperm than the disfavoured type. These results suggests that empiricists studying cryptic female choice and sperm allocation patterns need to determine whether sperm selection is applied differently, or consistently, on given males by different females in the same population.  相似文献

Abstract Direct costs and benefits to females of multiple mating have been shown to have large effects on female fecundity and longevity in several species. However, with the exception of studies examining genetic benefits of polyandry, little attention has been paid to the possible effects on offspring of multiple mating by females. We propose that nongenetic effects of maternal matings on offspring fitness are best viewed in the same context as other maternal phenotype effects on offspring that are well known even in species lacking parental care. Hence, matings can exert effects on offspring in the same way as other maternal environment variables, and are likely to interact with such effects. We have conducted a study using yellow dung flies ( Scathophaga stercoraria ), in which we independently manipulated female mating rate, number of mates and maternal thermal environment and measured subsequent fecundity, hatching success, and offspring life-history traits. To distinguish between direct effects of matings and potential genetic benefits of polyandry we split broods and reared offspring at three different temperature regimes. This allowed us to demonstrate that although we could not detect any simple benefits or costs to matings, there are effects of maternal environment on offspring and these effects interact with female mating regime affecting offspring fitness. Such interactions between female phenotype and the costs and benefits of matings have potentially broad implications for understanding female behavior.  相似文献

The 10-fold concentrated spent MRS culture cell-free supernatant concentrate [(cCFS)] of the human female genitourinary tract isolate Lactobacillus gasseri ATCC 9857 was shown to exhibit antibacterial activity towards gram-positive sporogenous and asporogenous fermentative eubacteria in liquid and on solid media under conditions that eliminated the activity of lactic acid (-glycerophosphate) and hydrogen peroxide (catalase). The antibacterial activity of the cCFS was characterized by automated turbidometry (Bioscreen) and non-linear regression analysis (Gompertz model) using MRS broth cultures of the indicator strain L. acidophilus ATCC 11975. It exhibited a bactericidal mode of action, sensitivity to trypsin and proteinase K, partial sensitivity to pepsin and pronase E, partial heat stability at 121 °C for 15 min, and retained significantly more activity following exposure to pH 3.0 and 5.0 compared with pH 7.2 and 9.0. The inhibitory spectrum included a wide range of Lactobacillus species, Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. infantis and B. catenulatum, Lactococcus cremoris, Leuconostoc cremoris, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Bacillus cereus, Clostridium tyrobutyricum, C. pasteurianum, C. sporogenes, Staphylococcus carnosus, and Enterococcus faecalis. Although partial inhibition of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 by cCFS was observed in liquid medium, inhibition of freshly isolated human uropathogenic E. coli strains could not be demonstrated on TSB agar plates by agar well diffusion. Following partial resolution by gel permeation FPLC on Superose-12, the fractionated cCFS was shown to comprise at least two inhibitory peptides (3.05 and 5.27 kDa) as well as aggregated inhibitory peptide material (21.65, 41.50, 81.20, and 120.90 kDa). The 3.05 kDa peptide, designated Gassericin D, inhibited L. acidophilus strains ATCC 11975 and ACA-DC 241. The 5.27 kDa peptide, designated Gassericin C, inhibited L. gasseri strain UCSC LF221Snb and En. faecalis DPC 3319. The aggregated 21.65 kDa peptide material strongly inhibited L. acidophilus ATCC 11975 and weakly inhibited Listeria inocua DPC 3306. The aggregated 41.50 kDa peptide material strongly inhibited Ba. cereus DPC 3316 and weakly inhibited L. acidophilus ACA-DC 241. The ability of L. gasseri ATCC 9857 to produce bacteriocin-like activity may be of importance in the biopreservation of nutraceuticals and in the management of female genitourinary and gastrointestinal tract infections involving En. faecalis.  相似文献

Unlike most acoustic systems evolved for pair formation whereonly males signal, the katydidPhaneroptera nana has a bidirectional communication system where both males and females sing. Despiteextensive study on male chorusing behavior in different communicationsystems, this behavior has rarely been explored in duettingspecies. I examined how this bidirectional communication systemaffects the collective pattern of male signaling.P. nana malesalternate their songs, and in response to synthetic stimulidelay their calls, according to the phase of stimulation. Pairsof synthetic calls (simulating alternating males) presentedto females elicited equal female response, as long as the intercallinterval was 200 ms. Thus, male alternation is imposed by thefemale's responsiveness and may be interpreted as a "jammingavoidance reaction." Further evidence suggests that chorusstructure is not merely constrained by the female sensory temporalresolution, but rather is adaptively related to female choicein this species.  相似文献

Female multiple mating (or polyandry) is considered to act as a genetic bet-hedging mechanism, by which females can reduce the assessment error in regard to mates genetic quality when only uncertain information is available. In spite of frequent verbal arguments, no theoretical examination has been carried out to determine the effectiveness of bet-hedging by multiple mating. In the present paper, I show that three factors, female population size, remating costs and environmental fluctuation, all affect the effectiveness of bet-hedging. A mathematical model predicts that bet-hedging effectively works only in small populations, and computer simulations were used to confirm this prediction. The results of simulations differed according to the degree of environmental fluctuation. In relatively stable environments, if there is no remating cost, the fixation probability of a multiple mating strategy is slightly higher than that of a single mating strategy, independent of female population size. However, with very slight fitness costs, multiple mating drastically loses its advantage as population size increases, and almost always becomes extinct within large populations. This means that the evolution of polyandry solely by the mechanism of bet-hedging is unlikely in stable environments. However, in unpredictable environments, or when negative frequency-dependent selection on fitness-related loci is introduced, a multiple mating strategy is sometimes successful against a single mating strategy, even if it entails a small fitness cost. Therefore, female multiple mating may possibly evolve only in these limited conditions. In most cases, some deterministic mechanisms such as postcopulatory sperm selection by multiply mated females (or direct material benefits) are more reasonable as the evolutionary causes of polyandry.  相似文献
