The capacity for parents to influence offspring phenotypes via nongenetic inheritance is currently a major area of focus in evolutionary biology. Intriguing recent evidence suggests that sexual interactions among males and females, both before and during mating, are important mediators of such effects. Sexual interactions typically extend beyond gamete release, involving both sperm and eggs, and their associated fluids. However, the potential for gamete-level interactions to induce nongenetic parental effects remains under-investigated. Here, we test for such effects using an emerging model system for studying gamete interactions, the external fertilizer Mytilus galloprovincialis. We employed a split-ejaculate design to test whether exposing sperm to egg-derived chemicals (ECs) from a female would affect fertilization rate and offspring viability when those sperm were used to fertilize a different female''s eggs. We found separate, significant effects of ECs from non-fertilizing females on both fertilization rate and offspring viability. The offspring viability effect indicates that EC-driven interactions can have nongenetic implications for offspring fitness independent of the genotypes inherited by those offspring. These findings provide a rare test of indirect parental effects driven exclusively by gamete-level interactions, and to our knowledge the first evidence that such effects occur via the gametic fluids of females. 相似文献

In neuronal development, dynamic rearrangement of actin promotes axonal growth cone extension, and spatiotemporal translation of local mRNAs in response to guidance cues directs axonal growth cone steering, where cofilin plays a critical role. While regulation of cofilin activity is well studied, regulatory mechanism for cofilin mRNA translation in neurons is unknown. In eukaryotic cells, proteins can be synthesized by cap‐dependent or cap‐independent mechanism via internal ribosome entry site (IRES)‐mediated translation. IRES‐mediated translation has been reported in various pathophysiological conditions, but its role in normal physiological environment is poorly understood. Here, we report that 5′UTR of cofilin mRNA contains an IRES element, and cofilin is predominantly translated by IRES‐mediated mechanism in neurons. Furthermore, we show that IRES‐mediated translation of cofilin is required for both axon extension and axonal growth cone steering. Our results provide new insights into the function of IRES‐mediated translation in neuronal development. 相似文献

The theory of sexual selection explains sexual dimorphisms in ornaments used in mate choice. Mutual mate choice is a form of sexual selection that might explain sexually monomorphic ornamental traits. Under mutual mate choice, both sexes select partners based on the same ornament. We tested the mutual mate choice hypothesis in a mutually ornamented seabird, the king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus), through observations of the pair formation process in the field. Penguins that were ready to mate formed displaying pairs at the edge of the colony. Some of these pairs moved into the breeding colony and produced an egg (definitive pairs), while other pairs separated and often switched to another potential partner (temporary pairs). Colored ornaments were quantified using color vision modeling. We predicted that birds would mate assortatively by their elaborate ornamental traits (specifically, colors of beak spots, auricular patches of feathers, and breast patch of feathers). We also predicted that definitive pairs would exhibit more elaborate ornaments than temporary pairs. The mutual mate choice hypothesis was supported by assortative pairing for color of the beak spots, but not for color or size of the auricular patches or for the color of the breast patch. An alternative hypothesis was also consistent with our results, that female choice for a male ornamental trait and superior female condition associated with the same trait produced assortative pairing patterns. More UV‐ and yellow‐colored beak spots for females in definitive than temporary pairs supported the female choice hypothesis over the mutual mate choice hypothesis, but previous experimental results from altered beak spot colors supported the latter. Egg size contributes to other life history traits of an individual. It is traditionally considered as a maternally determined characteristic to which the male does not have any direct contribution. However, a recent finding in insects suggests that males can affect egg size also directly. In fish, the male effect could take place only during egg swelling, as the final egg size is reached after that. We studied egg size in four freshwater salmonid species (the land-locked Atlantic salmon, the brown trout, the Arctic charr and the lake trout) right after fertilisation (initial egg size) and after the swelling phase (final egg size). The results showed that the final egg size is affected not only by the initial egg size but also by both the female and the male through the process of egg swelling. This study suggests that paternal contribution may form a previously largely ignored source of variation in early life history traits in salmonid fish. 相似文献

The evolution of sexual dimorphism has long been attributed to sexual selection, specifically as it would drive repeated gains of elaborate male traits. In contrast to this pattern, New World oriole species all exhibit elaborate male plumage, and the repeated gains of sexual dichromatism observed in the genus are due to losses of female elaboration. Interestingly, most sexually dichromatic orioles belong to migratory or temperate‐breeding clades. Using character scoring and ancestral state reconstructions from two recent studies in Icterus, we tested a hypothesis of correlated evolution between migration and sexual dichromatism. We employed two discrete phylogenetic comparative approaches: the concentrated changes test and Pagel's discrete likelihood test. Our results show that the evolution of these traits is significantly correlated (CCT: uncorrected P < 0.05; ML: LRT = 12.470, P < 0.005). Indeed, our best model of character evolution suggests that gains of sexual dichromatism are 23 times more likely to occur in migratory taxa. This study demonstrates that a life‐history trait with no direct relationship with sexual selection has a strong influence on the evolution of sexual dichromatism. We recommend that researchers further investigate the role of selection on elaborate female traits in the evolution of sexual dimorphism. 相似文献

利用X-射线CT扫描技术观察云南晚中新世松属球果化石的内部结构,并与现代种的内部结构进行比较。这是该技术在中国古植物学研究中的首次报道。通过内部结构的比较发现,松属化石最接近于现生种喀西亚松(Pinus kesiya)。CT扫描技术可以在不破坏标本的前提下观察植物化石的内部结构,对于较珍贵的化石研究作用尤为明显,但是分辨率的高低是该技术广泛应用于古植物学的重要因素,随着扫描仪器分辨率的不断提高,CT扫描技术将提供植物化石内部结构的更多细节信息,从而为古植物学研究开辟一条新的技术途径。 相似文献

- 1 Research on mating systems and reproductive strategies is valuable for providing ethological knowledge, important for the management and conservation of a species, and in a broader sense, important for biodiversity conservation.
- 2 We reviewed the literature to document the mating system of the brown bear Ursus arctos. We determined that many aspects of the reproduction of the brown bear remain unclear, including (i) biological aspects, such as hormone and oestrous cycling, sperm competition, mate choice, sexually selected infanticide, etc. and (ii) human impacts on the mating system, occurring when humans alter population size and structure, through, for example, hunting or habitat degradation.
- 3 We considered three mating system classification frameworks from the literature ( Emlen & Oring 1977 , Clutton‐Brock 1989 , Shuster & Wade 2003 ) and applied various brown bear populations to them. We did this (i) to document the plasticity of the mating system of the brown bear, and (ii) to find commonalities among the reported mating system classifications in order to provide a general and common classification of the brown bear's mating system.
- 4 The mating system of the brown bear can, in general, be classed as ‘polygamous’. Subclassifications can nevertheless be valuable on smaller spatial scales.
- 5 Within the polygamous mating system of the brown bear, biological aspects and human impacts can influence reproductive strategies at the individual and population level. Mating system classification frameworks often lack a common terminology, which contributes to the variety of published classifications of the mating system of the brown bear.

Orangutans and chimpanzees differ in many aspects of their mating and social systems. Nevertheless, because both great apes
require enormous maternal investment in offspring and because female reproductive potential is limited, female orangutans
and chimpanzees should be selective of their mates, yet expected to exhibit anti-infanticide strategies such as mating with
multiple males. We review and compare mating patterns in orangutans and chimpanzees to understand how these critical pressures
are filtered through the different demands of the socioecology of each species. We highlight the variation in female mating
behavior as a function of the proximity of ovulation. We conclude that both genera pursue tactics for paternity confusion
by mating with multiple males and by mating cooperatively or even proceptively with nonpreferred partners when conception
is unlikely. Mating selectivity is suggested by variation in proceptive behavior toward particular partners and by increased
resistance of nonpreferred partners during the periovulatory period. Thus, data for both species support a mixed mating strategy
whereby females shift their mating behavior in accordance with ovulatory status to accommodate the competing demands of mate
