A study on the profundal chironomids of the artificial Lake Campotosto (Central Italy) was carried out during the summer/early autumn of 1983 and 1984, in order to analyse their composition and community structure in relation to the lake trophic level assessed by water chemical analysis.A total of about 2000 specimens belonging to 15 taxa were collected during the study.Chironomus plumosus group andTanytarsus spp. dominated in 1983 and 1984, respectively, showing a competitive relationship probably due to the larval size. The functional feeding organization was mostly composed of collectors (percentages greater than 90%), revealing the presence of abundant fine organic deposits (FPOM). Diversity and evenness appeared to be negatively affected by the monotony of food, which seems to constitute the key factor in governing both the taxonomic and the trophic structure of chironomid fauna.A clear discrepancy between water chemical data and profundal chironomid analyses was observed in the assessment of the lake trophic level. Sediments exhibited eutrophicated conditions, whereas overlying waters indicated an oligotrophic status. Synopsis The filter feeding organ of cyprinid fishes is the branchial sieve, which consists of a mesh formed by gill rakers and tiny channels on the gill arches. In order to establish its possible role during growth we measured the following morphological gill raker parameters over a range of sizes in three cyprinid fishes, bream, white bream and roach: inter raker distance, bony raker length, raker width, cushion length and channel width. At any given standard length common bream has the largest inter raker distance, roach the lowest and white bream is intermediate. In the comb model of filter feeding the inter raker distance is considered to be a direct measure of the mesh size and retention ability (= minimal size of prey that can be retained) of a filter. For the three species under study there is a conflict between the comb model and experimental data on particle retention. Lammens et al. (1987) found that common bream has a large retention ability whereas roach and white bream have a much smaller one. A new model, the channel model (Hoogenboezem et al. 1991) has been developed for common bream; in this model the lateral gill rakers can regulate the mesh size of the medial channels on the other side of the gill slit. The present data indicate that this model is not appropriate for white bream and roach. At any given standard length white bream and roach only reach 70% of the raker length of common bream, which means that in this model the gill slits should to be very narrow during filter feeding. The gill rakers consist of a bony raker and a fleshy cushion. The bony rakers have a rather long needle-like part outside the cushion in bream, but not in white bream and roach which have blunt gill rakers. Blunt gill rakers are not suited to reduce the diameter of the medial channels. The comb model seems more appropriate for white bream and roach, but doubts about the validity of this simple model remain. The sum of the areas of the medial channels is an approximation of the area through which water flows in the filter. This channel area therefore gives an impression of the capacity or flow rate of the filter. With this capacity estimation and an estimation of energy consumption we calculated an energy ratio of filter feeding. The energy ratio decreases with increasing standard length with an exponent close to the expected exponent of -0.40. This study investigated the morphological, physiological, and behavioral components of social dominance important for mate attraction in male green iguanas (Iguana iguana). A group of 9 male and 11 female adult green iguanas was studied in a large semi-natural enclosure during one reproductive season (October–January). Four of the nine males never initiated aggressive encounters; the other five were observed to display aggressively toward each other and were ranked in a linear dominance hierarchy. Head size was the most important factor influencing fighting success. Head size and display frequency were positively correlated with plasma testosterone levels. Dominance rank directly influenced ability to monopolize areas containing resources used by females. The quality of a male's home range, measured as his access to a large basking rock in the enclosure, was related to the proportion of potential mates found within his home range. One male greatly surpassed the others in his ability to defend a home range of high quality and attract potential mates. These data suggest that physiological and morphological factors, through their influence on social behavior, may ultimately affect male reproductive fitness. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Summary
Sporobolus virginicus (L.) Kunth is a halophytic grass native to tropical and warm temperate coasts throughout the world. A rhizomatous perennial with erect culms,S. virginicus occurs as two genetically distinct growth forms, which are designated by their characteristic habitats as marsh and dune. What accounts for the specific distribution and maintenance of two separate ecotypes ofS. virginicus is not known. The present study examined the effects of seawater salinity on several morphological and physiological responses of hydroponically cultivated marsh and dune plants to determine whether differential tolerance to substrate salinity might contribute to the observed pattern of habitation. Both marsh and dune form plants survived prolonged exposure to full-strength seawater and reproduced vegetatively via culms and rhizomes. Salinity-induced reductions in culm height, internode length, and leaf size led to a miniaturization of marsh and dune plants. Sodium ion levels were low (<1.0 mmol/g dry weight) in various organs of salinized plants irrespective of ecotype, and potassium ion content increased in all salt-challenged plants, as did quarternary ammonium compounds and proline. Significant differences, however, between marsh and dune plants with respect to the effects of salinity on resource allocation, flowering phenology, and protein composition suggested that external salt concentration has a role in determining ecotype distribution. 相似文献

Floral biology and sex determination are reviewed in cucumber, one of the best studied monoecious plant systems. Sexual differentiation is controlled by genotypic and environmental factors. Sex conversion has been achieved by a variety of chemical treatments, some of which being extensively used for commercial purposes. Sex expression can be shifted in either direction: femaleness is promoted by ethylene, auxines and ethylene releasing compounds, while maleness is induced by gibberellins and chemicals counteracting ethylene action. Agrobacterium transformation affects, albeit rather nonspecifically, sex expression. An important collection of sex and floral mutants has been developed. The expression of sex genes has been shown to be under the control of modifier genes or the environment. Synopsis It is commonly accepted that more active fishes have a greater proportion of red muscle in their trunk musculature than do less active fishes. Further, the proportion of red muscle has been used to classify fish species into functional groups reflecting different activity patterns. Nevertheless, existing measures of both red muscle and mobility have several limitations, and the relationship between these parameters has never been evaluated quantitatively. Using data from the literature, we demonstrate a positive, statistical association between the proportion of red muscle in the caudal peduncle of marine fishes and a qualitative measure of mobility (categorization as sedentary vs. mobile based on natural-history accounts). Analyses of the frequency distribution of the proportion of red muscle also provide evidence for two subdistributions. However, this bimodality does not correspond with sedentary vs. mobile or sit-and-wait vs. active search dichotomies. 相似文献

Crosses between white and black color morphs of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, used as genetic markers, showed that male beetles ride and guard females to achieve the three copulations required to fill the spermatheca. Multiple matings are necessary for the females to realize their full reproductive potential. Sperm mixing occurs in the spermatheca providing partial sperm precedence. The data support the competitive mate searching theory.

Les résultats indiquent que le sperme de deux mâles accouplant la même femelle se mélange dans la spermathèque assurant ainsi un certain niveau de précédence du sperme du dernier mâle.La masse de sperme dans la spermathèque était inférieure à sa capacité chez les femelles ayant été accouplées une ou deux fois. Le doryphore mâle aurait donc avantage à demeurer sur la femelle après un premier accouplement afin d'obtenir le minimum de trois accouplements requis pour remplir la spermathèque avant que les autres mâles puissent accoupler cette femelle. Les autres mâles ont avantage à essayer de dérober cette femelle pour remplir eux mêmes la spermathèque ou tout au moins profiter d'une certaine précédence du sperme du dernier mâle pour fertiliser une partie des oeufs.Sans accouplements multiples, la femelle ne possède pas suffisamment de sperme pour féconder tous ses oeufs. II semble aussi que les accouplements répétés puissent augmenter sa fécondité.Les résultats supportent une stratégie reproductive de compétition plutôt qu'une simple maximisation du nombre d'accouplements.相似文献

Four species of riparian vegetation (alder, birch, willow and poplar) were fertilized with nitrogen, phosphorus, nitrogen
+ phosphorus, or no fertilizer (control). The resulting leaf detritus (leached but not microbially colonized) was offered
to a stream shredder, Hydatophylax variabilis (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae). In one experiment, shredder consumption of leaf detritus from different nutrient treatments
(within tree species) was compared, and in a second experiment, consumption of different tree species (within nutrient treatments)
was compared. Larvae preferred leaf detritus from nitrogen + phosphorus treatments (except in poplar where nitrogen treatment
was preferred). Alder was preferred over other tree species for all treatments. Chemical and physical analyses of leaf litter
showed differences between tree species and nutrient treatments in nutrient content, tannins and leaf toughness. Leaf consumption
by larvae was positively associated with nitrogen content and negatively associated with condensed tannin content. Species
composition and nutrient status of riparian vegetation may strongly influence detrital food webs in streams. 相似文献
