Digestion rate in relation to alternative feeding in three species of polyphagous predators 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. 1. Disappearance of different amounts of aphid ingested by three species of polyphagous predators, the carabids Bembidion lampros (Herbst) and Nebria brevicollis (F.) and the staphylinid Philonthus cognatus Stephens, was monitored by a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The effect on the rate of inactivation of prey antigens by the ingestion of subsequent, non-aphid food was also studied.
2. Antigen inactivation was significantly more rapid in the staphyilinid than in the carabids.
3. No statistically significant differences were found in the rate of antigen inactivation between beetles which consumed only aphids and those which were given a different type of food after feeding on aphids; the detection period was longer in the former groups. A higher proportion of beetles with low levels of aphid antigen were found earlier in the latter group.
4. The results did not unequivocally support the prediction derived from optimal digestion theory that beetles without continuous access to food would retain an initial meal longer than beetles with unlimited access. 相似文献

Feeding deterrent activities of ellagic acid, two ellagitannins, gallic acid, pyrogallol, and several gallic acid derivatives towards three species of aphids were determined. The most sensitive species tested was Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), the least sensitive was Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). Myzus persicae (Sulzer) was of intermediate sensitivity. Ellagic acid (ED50=15 ppm) and n-decyl gallate (ED50=16 ppm) were particularly potent against S. graminum, while n-octyl gallate was the most active compound tested against A. pisum (ED50=182 ppm) and M. persicae (ED50=56 ppm). The ellagitannins, geraniin and pedunculagin, were active against S. graminum and M. persicae, but not against A. pisum. Methylation of the free hydroxyl groups of gallic acid resulted in a large decrease in activity, while esterification of its carboxyl group with alkyl chains of increasing length resulted in increasing activity against S. graminum. Against A. pisum and M. persicae, ellagic acid, gallic acid and 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid were inactive, whereas pyrogallol and the gallate esters were at least moderately active as feeding deterrents.
Résumé L'examen a porté sur l'action répulsive, lors de l'alimentation de trois espèces de pucerons, de l'acide ellgique, de deux ellagitanins, de l'acide gallique, du pyrogallol et de plusieurs dérivés de l'acide gallique. Schizaphis graminum Rondani a été l'espèce la plus sensible, tandis que Acyrthosiphon pisum. Harris a été la moins sensible; la sensibilité de Myzus persicae Sulzer était intermédiaire. Feeding of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana, a brachionid rotifer isolated from the Loosdrecht Lakes (The Netherlands), was examined in the laboratory using 14C-labelled food. The gut-filling time at a food concentration of 9.6 µg C ml–1 was about 15 minutes. Animals which were fed on 3 size fractions of the lake seston (< 7 µm, 7–15 µm, and 15–33 µm) showed a clear preference (Jacobs' selectivity index) for the largest size fraction. This fraction was composed predominantly of filamentous cyanobacteria. For animals weighing 0.37–0.49 µm C ind.–1 the daily ration (daily food consumption per unit body weight × 100) ranged from 50 to 100% at food levels of 2 mg C l–1 and below, but increased to 150–250% at food concentrations of 5 mg C l–1 and above. The assimilation efficiency was 100% up to 5 mg C l–1 of food, but decreased to about 80% at higher food levels. 相似文献

Summary The Yellow-bellied Glider, Petaurus australis, was observed to feed sporadically but extensively on eucalypt sap. Gliders extracted sap by making incisions into the bark with their procumbent lower incisor teeth and licking the resulting exudate. Less than 1% of possible trees were incised for sap. Sap flow and sap-sugar concentration were estimated for eight sap-site trees and eight non sap-site trees at intervals during an 18 month period. Measurements of sap-sugar concentration differed substantially among trees but fluctuated between sample periods independent of glider use. Sap flow measurements, were always higher for those trees currently in use by gliders, although the particular sap-site trees comprising this group varied between sample periods. The variation in sap flow occurred indenpendent of the incidence of rainfall or the type of microhabitat the tree occupied. Experimental incising of trees, designed to mimic the effects of feeding by gliders, failed to show any effect on sap flow. This suggests that the incidence of sap feeding is determined by a tree's pattern of sap flow and that there may be trees with unusual patterns of sap flow which gliders select as the most favourable trees to incise. 相似文献

The present investigation was designed to study the uptake of67Cu when administered directly, into the portal vein, along with either functose or glucose, by the liver and extrahepatic
tissues. Following weaning, male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed for 3 wk either commercial laboratory ration (chow) or semipurified
diets deficient in Cu (0.6 ppm) or supplemented with Cu (6.0 ppm) and containing 62% carbohydrate as either fructuse or cornstarch.
After an overnight fast, a single dose of rat plasma (0.1 mL) containing fructose or glucose extrinsically labeled with67Cu was injected directly into their portal vein. Although not always statistically significant, rats fed chow retained more
radioactivity in the liver and several extrahepatic tissues when67Cu was administered with fructose than with glucose. Regardless of Cu status, rats fed diets containing fructose retained
more radioactivity in extrahepatic tissues than rats fed starch. There was an increased uptake of67Cu by the liver, blood, muscle, and fat pad when fructose as compared to glucose was injected in combination with the isotope.
These data strongly suggest that Cu requirements or utilization are greater when fructose is the main dietary carbohydrate.
The results may also in part explain the reason for the increased severity of Cu deficiency in rats fed fructose. 相似文献

Feeding behavior of Sitobion avenae F. (Homoptera: Aphididae) on oats (Avena sativa cv. Clintland 64) was electronically monitored, and waveforms corresponding to salivation, ingestion, and sieve element penetration described.During 90 min plant access, aphids ingested from phloem for 0–43 min (mean: 8.1 min) and non-phloem for 0–60 min (mean: 19 min). Only 65% of the aphids tested made phloem contact within 90 min, contacting phloem after 18–85 min (mean: 32 min). No significant difference was observed in the feeding behavior of aphids carrying barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) from that of non-viruliferous aphids.Penetration of a sieve element was a prerequisite for BYDV transmission but did not insure transmission. Penetration of one sieve element resulted in a 65% chance of transmission independent of the duration of phloem contact. The chance of transmission increased with increasing number of sieve element penetrations.Inoculation of oat seedlings with single, viruliferous aphids for 90 min is estimated to cause 54% of the plants to be infected. Also, it is estimated that no transmission can occur with plant access periods shorter than 17 min.
Zusammenfassung Das Probeverhalten von Sitobion avenae F. (Homoptera: Aphididae) auf Hafer (Sorte Clintland 64) wurden elektronisch verfolgt. Drei Wellenformen (S=Speichelfluss, X-das Eindringen in ein Siebelement, I=Nahrungsaufname) wurden registriert. In histologischen Untersuchungen wurden diese Wellenformen mit der Position der Stechborsten korreliert. Wenn X-Wellen oder eine X-I-Folge registriert wurden, war die Stechborste immer im Phloëm; bei S-Wellen oder bei einer S-I-Folge, war die Stechborste nie im Phloëm.Die Blattläuse wurden auf gesunden, fünf Tage alten Pflanzen während 90 Min beobachtet. 65% der Blattläuse erreichten nach 18–85 Min (Durchschnitt 32 Min) das Phloëm. Innerhalb 90 Min nahmen die Blattläuse während 0–43 Min (Durchschnitt 8.1 Min) Saft aus dem Phloem und während 0–60 Min (Durchschnitt 19 Min) Saft aus dem Mesophyll auf. Keine signifikanten Unterschiede im Probeverhalten wurden bei Blattläusen mit und ohne Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) festgestellt.Blattläuse, die innerhalb 24 Stunden BYDV übermitteln können, wurden für Übertragungsversuche verwendet. Das Probeverhalten dieser Blattläuser wurde manipuliert, und die Leistungsfähigkeit der Übertragung mit einer immunologischen Technik (ELISA) untersucht. Um BYDV zu übertragen mussten die Blattläuse mit einem Siebelement in Kontakt kommen. Nach der Stechborstenpenetration in ein Siebelement wurden 65% der Pflanzen mit BYDV infiziert. Der Prozentsatz infizierter Pflanzen und der Virusiter in den infizierten Pflanzen waren mit der Dauer der Siebelement-penetration (Anzahl von X-Wellen) nicht proportional. Wenn die Blattläuse mit zwei oder drei Siebelementen in Kontakt kamen, wurde der Prozentsatz infizierter Pflanzen signifikant erhöht, während der Virustiter nich verändert wurde. Comparisons were made of the preferences shown by non-protein-fed females, protein-fed gravid females, and non-protein-fed males of the house fly, given choices between sucrose solution and either l-leucine or sodium phosphate buffer.In choice tests where non-protein-fed females showed little preference, protein-fed females and males both showed a strong preference for the sucrose solution. The findings suggest that l-leucine and sodium phosphate buffer are recognised by non-protein-fed females as indicators of nutrients for ovarian development.
Résumé Les choix alimentaires de 3 catégories de M. domestica: femelles n'ayant pas consommé de protéines, femelles à ovaires développés alimentées sur protéines, mâles n'ayant pas consommé de protéines, ont été examinés par leur absorption de solutions dans une paire de potomètres.Elles avaient le choix entre, d'une part une solution de sucrose et, d'autre part une solution de L. leucine ou d'un tampon de phosphate de soude.Pour les expériences où les femelles non préalablement alimentées sur protéines ne présentent aucune préférence, les femelles alimentées sur protéines et les mâles préfèrent nettement la solution de sucrose.Les résultats montrent que les femelles non alimentées sur protéines répondent plus que les femelles mûres et les mâles à la fois à la solution de L. leucine et au tampon de phosphate qu'au sucrose. Cerenkov radiation was used to measure ingestion and release by Brachionus calyciflorus and Daphnia pulex that were fed 32P-labeled Rhodotorula glutinus. A method is described that uses automatic pipet tips as cages, permitting measurement of ingestion rates and isotope loss by individual animals. Estimated gut renewal times were 16 min for B. calyciflorus and 25–28 min for D. pulex. Filtering and ingestion rates for both animals agree closely with previous estimates. B. calyciflorus release 32P at high rates in several pulses of short duration. In Crawford Lake, a small meromictic water body in southern Ontario, Canada, the life cycles of planktonic Chaoborus flavicans and C. punctipennis were out of phase by about two months, the former pupating from mid May through mid June and the latter from July through September. C. flavicans possibly produced a second annual generation. Fourth instars of both species were strong diel migrators and occupied similar strata at most times. C. punctipennis fourth instar diet consisted almost entirely of rotifers. C. flavicans ate rotifers but fed heavily also on daphnids in May and August. C. punctipennis fourth instars showed little growth until early spring, possibly owing to a sparseness of rotifers, then grew rapidly until pupation. C. flavicans had a slow, but relatively constant growth rate at all times during the open water season, presumably because its greater mouth gape allowed it a wider range of food items. 相似文献
