Eleotrid larvae (2.1–16 mm) were collected from surface waters of a billabong in south-eastern Australia. Estimates of larval density in plankton net samples at night averaged 148.3 larvae per m3 and 16.6 larvae per m3 during the day. In contrast, pump samples provided density estimates of 8.3 larvae per m3 at night and 0.9 larvae per m3 during the day. Larval densities did not differ between open water, snag (fallen tree) and Typha habitats, but Typha habitats yielded larger larvae than other habitats. 32.9% of larvae in pump samples were damaged and unmeasurable, creating a bias favouring larger larvae. The modal length of larvae in net samples at night was 5–6 mm, compared with 3–4 mm during the day, reflecting both greater net avoidance by larger larvae during the daytime and dispersal of smaller larvae from the surface at night. Dispersion patterns of larvae suggest that classes of larvae smaller than, and larger than 5.0 mm exhibit reciprocal diel vertical migration behaviour linked to ontogenetic changes in diet. Larvae less than 5 mm fed only during the day and preyed exclusively on rotifers, whereas larger larvae continued to feed at night and consumed mostly planktonic crustaceans.  相似文献

Three groups of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , (initial weight 40 g) were fed one of three rations (low, medium or high) for 73 days. Consumption by individual fish within the three ration groups was measured on four occasions (days 27, 55, 64 and 72) using radiography. Food intake by individual fish varied between days and this variability was expressed using the coefficient of variation (CV). Dominant fish within each ration group were defined as individuals with the greater share of the group meal and these fish had low CVs for food intake indicating relatively little variation in daily consumption. By contrast, the fish which had consumed a low mean proportion of the group meal displayed high CVs for food intake, indicating considerable variability in the sizes of individual meals consumed by these fish. As group ration increased, the range of meal sizes and individual CVs in daily feeding decreased, suggesting that the strength of the feeding hierarchy and the variability in individual consumption decreased as food availability increased. It is suggested that radiography can be used to assess social relationships within groups of fish allowing the assessment of feeding hierarchies in larger groups of fish than would be possible by observational techniques.  相似文献

Interactions between the larvae of Mirogrex terraesanctae (Steinitz, 1952) in Lake Kinneret, Israel, and their zooplankton prey were studied experimentally. Prey species preference and size selectivities were measured. Larvae were hatched in the lab from eggs collected in the field, and fed different food items in various concentrations. The food items included lake zooplankton, algae, and commercial pellets. It was shown that small, first feeding larvae (7–8.5 mm SL) prefer small bodied zooplankters (< 180 µ). The effect of these food sources on larval growth was measured. It was found that larval Mirogrex grew at a higher rate when fed zooplankton prey sized from 63 µ–250 µ. Food items smaller than 63 µ, larger than 250 µ and Scenedesmus sp., produced less than optimal growth rates. The importance of Mirogrex feeding habits and their potential influence on the Kinneret ecosystem is considered.  相似文献

The influence of particle size, initial particle concentration and larval stage on the ingestion rate, ‘retention efficiency’, and filtering rate of anuran larvae with varying filter apparatus anatomy and different life histories was investigated for four species. Larvae of premetamorphic Stages 28 and 32 and prometamorphic Stage 40 were selected for filtering experiments on the basis of their different growth rates. Three different sizes of silica gel particles were offered as mock food. Particle concentration was measured photometrically. The Michaelis-Menten model was used to describe the dependency of ingestion rate, filtering rate, and ‘retention efficiency’ upon initial particle concentration, and to calculate maximum ingestion rate, threshold concentration, and the half-saturation constant. (1) The highest ingestion rates, filtering rates and ‘retention efficiencies’ were achieved by Xenopus laevis larvae, followed by Bufo calamita larvae. Bufo bufo larvae lay at the opposite end of the scale. Rana temporaria larvae were placed between B. calamita and B. bufo larvae. This order is attributed to differences in life histories, especially the different breeding environments in which these larvae occur. (2) The larger the particle size and the older the stage, the greater the tendency toward saturation of the ingestion rate, filtering rate and ‘retention efficiency’. These filtration parameters are graded according to particle size. The ingestion rate (number of particles), filtration rate and ‘retention efficiency’ are greatest for PS3. Ingestion volume is greatest for PS 1. The difference between PS3 and PS2 on the one hand, and PS1 on the other, is often great; for Stage 28 X. laevis it is very great. This shows that larvae ingest large particles more effectively, and that the most effective ingestion takes place at Stages 28 and 32, owing to the growth function of these stages. The ability of larvae to ingest large particles effectively is possibly a very basic phylogenetic characteristic. (3) The threshold concentration is lowest when the particles are at their largest. In accordance with conclusions drawn by other authors, threshold feeding is attributed to regulation by buccal pumping and mucus production. Considerable importance is attributed to threshold feeding with respect to larval adaptation to oligotrophic environments.  相似文献

Gut content analysis, field and laboratory observations, and food choice experiments were used to assign four abundant macroinvertebrate taxa in the headwaters of the Buffalo River, eastern Cape, to functional feeding groups. The mayfly Adenophlebia auriculata (Leptophlebiidae) was classified as a collector: brusher; while the caddisflies, Dyschimus ensifer (Pisuliidae) and Goerodes caffrariae (Lepidostomatidae), and stoneflies Afronemoura spp. (Notonemouridae) were classified as shredders. The effects of organism size, season and biotope on dietary composition were tested, with size accounting for most of the dietary variability within each taxon. Larger individuals consumed more material, larger items, and, in the case of A. auriculata, a wider variety of food-types. There was little variation in the feeding of the taxa in different seasons or biotopes. Shredders ingested mainly leaf fragments, and this, rather than the size of particles in the gut, is a more useful basis for the shredder designation. A. auriculata was the most opportunistic feeder, and items in its diet additional to fine detritus varied seasonally and in the various biotopes. Of the shredders, Afronemoura spp. and D. ensifer were more varied in their diet, augmenting the staple intake of leaf material with other items. G. caffrariae was the most specialised feeder, being exclusively a shredder, regardless of biotope or season. Despite criticisms of the applicability of the FFG concept in the literature, we conclude that these taxa can reasonably be accommodated in functional feeding classes, and that the results are useful in describing the functions performed by the organisms in the river. The relationship between feeding function and river process is emphasised: we suggest that collectors contribute primarily to organic particle retention, while shredders facilitate organic particle size reduction and mobilisation, and the enhancement of substrates for microbial colonisation. An emphasis on river function is a useful context within which to view the FFG concept.  相似文献

The mouthpart morphology of the freshwater calanoid copepod Acanthodiaptomus denticornis was examined with optical microscopy. The mouthparts have sharp teeth and stout appendages with clawlike setae, typical of omnivorous calanoid mouthpart morphology. Observation of the buccal aperture with Scanning Electron Microscopy shows a large opening permitting feeding on prey as large as Keratella cochlearis. These observations agree with our feeding experiments which show that A. denticornis feed on K. cochlearis.  相似文献

More first-instar larvae of the rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée), were recovered from susceptible IR36 and Roxoro rice varieties than resistant TKM6 and Oryza perennis, 24 h after infestation. Within a rice plant, a higher proportion of larvae was recovered from young whorl leaf, followed by mature leaves and leafsheaths on all the four rice varieties tested. However, differences were observed between susceptible and resistant varieties in the distribution of larvae on these three plant parts. In laboratory choice tests, first-instar larvae preferred to settle on the young leaves of IR36 and TKM6 when presented with their respective mature leaves. No such preference was observed in tests with Rexoro and O. perennis. Larval survival was similar on young and mature leaves of Rexoro. Young leaves of IR36 and TKM6 were more suitable for survival in comparison with their respective mature leaves while the reverse was true for O. perennis. Larval movement was slower on the mature leaves and larvae took longer to reach the whorl leaf of TKM6 than on IR36. The density of trichomes of the abaxial surface of TKM6 was higher than that of the other varieties tested. Adaptive significance of feeding in the leafwhorl to young larvae is discussed.  相似文献

Rattlesnakes typically strike and release adult rodent prey. Striking is followed by a sustained, high rate of tongue flicking that guides the snake to the envenomated, dead prey. Wild-caught rattlesnakes exhibited this chemosensory searching for about 2.5 h, and the present study demonstrated that long-term captive rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox, C durissus, C horridus, C vegrandis, C unicolor) at three zoos did the same. Because these zoo-raised snakes had always been offered dead rodents and because the snakes had become accustomed to ingesting them without striking, the present snakes had rarely exercised their innate predatory repertoires. The duration of chemosensory searching in these snakes indicates that this important aspect of the predatory repertoire had not been degraded as a consequence of long-term captive husbandry.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Spills and leakage from underground fuel storage tanks (UFSTs) can potentially contaminate soil and groundwater and pose harmful effects to public health and the environment. This study evaluated the feasibility of using volatile organic compounds (VOCs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), electrical conductivity (EC), and pH to examine the contamination caused by leaking UFSTs. Screening water assessments for VOCs and general water quality parameters were conducted on the premises of 53 gas stations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to identify potentially contaminated sites, and 25 ground bores were drilled for the quantification of TPH concentrations, EC, and pH values in 407 soil samples. The experimental approach followed in this study included geochemical analyses based on borehole drilling at five targeted gas stations, analyses of water samples from underground storage reservoirs, and analyses of soil core samples obtained from different depths to determine the degree of TPH contamination. Thirty-five VOCs were identified in the water samples collected from gas stations. Methylene chloride, tribromomethane, toluene, chlorobenzene, dibromochloromethane, and benzene were frequently encountered in most of the water samples. Some of these samples exceeded the World Health Organization and Saudi Arabian guidelines for acceptable levels of pH, total dissolved solids, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, calcium, and total hardness. The measured TPH levels were clearly indicative of subsoil contamination and subsequent accumulation in soil over time, particularly at depths of 1–6 m; there was not a noticeable dependence or impact on pH.  相似文献
