Adult reproductive performance is linked to the period of feeding done by the final instar larva after attainment of a larval critical weight (LCW). The highest weight attained by a final instar larva is referred to as the larval maximum weight (LMW) and is the onset of the pre-pupal period. The relationships between LCW, pupal weight (PW) and adult weight (AW) are described as functions of the LMW. In the leafroller Cnephasia jactatana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) LCW was dependent on larval size and was approximately 75% of the mean LMW. LCW was about 29 mg and 36 mg for male and female larvae of 1.18 mm and 1.20 mm head-capsule width, respectively. Over three successive generations of laboratory rearing, PW was approximately 30% and 25% lower than the LMW for males and females, respectively. AW was consistently about 50% and 40% lower than the PW for males and females, respectively. The decrease in weight from LMW to PW was named as the constant DP and found to be 0.3 for males and 0.25 for females. The total decrease from LMW to AW was the constant DA and was 0.6 for males and 0.5 for females. The duration of the latent feeding period was positively correlated to PW and AW. LCW may be used to derive quality indices that describe and predict pupal and adult performance.

The optimum temperatures for population development were determined for six species of bacterial-feeding nematodes from among eight temperatures, ranging from 5 to 40 C. Four of the species are cohabiting species. The range of temperatures over which population development occurs (temperature niche breadth) is different for the cohabiting species. This difference may be a means of reducing competition between species, thus increasing temperatures over which habitats can be exploited.

The progress of developmental programme in the epidermal cells of last instar larvae of Bombyx mori was determined by ecdysteroid injections in normal and in JH-treated larvae. To clarify the importance of food intake in the control of development, starved animals were also used. The instar begins with a period during which the larval programme is expressed: this occurs in the presence of 20-hydroxyecdysone. Epidermal cells can thereafter secrete pupal cuticle after ecdysteroid injection although the larval programme is normally still present. During the last period only pupal characters can be expressed either in normal or in 20-hydroxyecdysone-injected larvae. These different developmental phases are not correlated with obligatory and facultative feeding periods.Transition from the first to the second phases is correlated with the absence of JH effects on pupal genes. JH applications during the second period, however, prevent the expression of pupal characters after 20-hydroxyecdysone injection. Thus, during this period, the pupal programme is not stabilized. Cellular reprogramming itself occurs at the onset of the last developmental period and is probably under the control of ecdysteroids.

The possibility that the feeding rates of larvae of S. austeni and S. lineatum are influenced by the nature of the food material is considered in relation to natural river conditions and laboratory feeding experiments. Diatoms appeared to be the most satisfactory food source and bacteria (Pseudomonas) the poorest. Simuliid larvae attain high assimilation efficiencies when feeding on diatoms but the proportion of river suspended solids which they assimilate is probably very low.

The invertebrate drift leaving the lower end of a small coastal stream on the east coast of Vancouver Island was recorded during low flow conditions. 20,156 animals, weighing 0.96 g (dry weight), were collected in drift nets over a 5 day period in early summer. High and low drifting taxa are listed. Considerable daily variation in total captures occurred and was attributed to a few dominant taxa (primarily harpacticoid copepods, mites and chironomid larvae) exhibiting atypical drift patterns. 0.004% of the stream's invertebrate standing crop was estimated to be in the water column at any instant in time. The possible use of the outgoing animals as food for juvenile salmon in the estuary is discussed.

Proteolytic activity in the stomach, pyloric caeca and intestine decreases with increasing size in the three fish species Mugil auratus, M. capito and M. saliens. Differences between these species are found mainly in the gastric proteolytic activity which appears to be related to diet. This activity is pronounced in M. saliens whose diet is mainly carnivorous. Comparison of regression lines relating gastric proteolytic activity to size reveals differences which distinguish M. auratus from both of the other species. Total proteolytic activity exhibits high variability depending on the types of diet.

Some results of studies with Daphnia magna are presented. These results can be used as background information for toxicologists, but the techniques referred to might well be used for toxicity tests. Daphnia magna is a filter-feeder. With the Coulter Counter it was shown that the feeding mechanism is aselective for size of the food particles. It was also shown that algal cells can pass the gut of Daphnia magna several times before being completely digested. The uptake of food is proportional to the food concentration up to a critical concentration. Above this concentration the food uptake is constant. Respiration is also dependent on the food concentration, and has a maximum value at food concentrations near the critical concentration of the feeding process. Growth efficiency is independent of the food concentration. The effect of temperature on the feeding process is different for low and high food concentrations. Growth efficiency is maximal at 10°C and above 22°C growth efficiency was negative, which means that the population cannot survive under the experimental conditions used, at temperatures above 22°C.

The prosobranch Planaxis sulcatus is reported as a new natural host of Lobatostoma manteri at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef. Planaxis sulcatus and Cerithium moniliferum were experimentally infected with large numbers of eggs. The larvae hatch in the stomach and migrate immediately along the ducts of the digestive gland into the digestive follicles. The larvae feed on the secretion and probably epithelial cells of the follicles. The acetabulum is used for adhesion to the epithelium and contributes to its erosion. In heavily infected snails, the digestive follicles disappear gradually and the larvae live in cavities lined by a flattened epithelium, parts of which show secretory activity. In snails dissected 47–49 and 65–66 days after infection, the cavities are fused, forming several large spaces which communicate with each other; only small parts of the epithelium are still secretory. Concentrations of amoebocytes occur in the walls of the digestive gland and in the wall between digestive gland and stomach of infected Planaxis. Some young worms were found in the stomach of Planaxis. No tissue reactions were seen around the stomach except in the wall between digestive gland and stomach. In Cerithium with 65–67 days old infection, the cavities contain much detritus and disintegrating cells, the epithelium is practically non-secretory and surrounded by loose connective tissue. In larvae with a body length of approximately 0·5–0·6 mm, the acetabulum begins to divide into alveoli and its anterior end grows forward; the anterior alveoli gradually increase in size and new alveoli are formed in the posterior undivided zone. In two specimens of approximately 1·3 mm body length, the whole adhesive disk was divided into half the number of alveoli usually found in adults. Allometric shifts during growth of the worms are analysed.

Reared in (tubular) aquaria containing different depths of water, Ophiocephalus striatus (0.7 g, 4.5 cm body length), an obligatory air-breathing tropical fish, swam long or short distances to enable themselves to exchange atmospheric air. In each tested depth (2.5, 5.0, 15.5, 31.0 and 40.0 cm) series, one group was starved, while the other was fed ad libitum twice a day on fish muscle. In the shallowest water (2.5 cm depth), the feeding group surfaced 1,294 times, travelling 64.7 m at an energy cost of 20.4 mg dry fish substance/g live fish/day, against those exposed to the deepest water (40 cm depth), which expended 35.8 mg/g/day, swimming 1,503.4 m on 1,879 visits to the surface. The starving group surfaced only 482 times, travelling 24.1 m at an expense of 5.8 mg/g/day in the shallowest water, while those at 40 cm depth surfaced 504 times, swimming 403.2 m at an energy cost of 7.4 mg/g/day. Owing to the sustained swimming activity and the consequent fatigue, the test individuals belonging to both groups in all the tested series hang to the surface for a definite interval, repaying the O2 debt. Observations were also made to assess the duration of hanging to precisely estimate the distance travelled. Irrespective of changes in depths of water, the duration of hanging to surface was only 3.0 hr/day for the feeding groups, while it was as much as 15.5 hr/day for the starving groups. The maximum sustained metabolic level of O.striatus reared in 40 cm depth was equivalent to 1.23 ml O2/g/hr, which is about 2 times higher than the value reported for the active metabolism of swimming Oncorhynchus nerka at 15°C in Brett's (1964) respirometer. O.striatus reared in 2.5 cm depth fed 32.0 mg and converted 6.7 mg dry food/g live fish/day, while those exposed to the deepest water fed 49.1 mg, but converted only 5.5 mg/g/day. Culturing obligatory air-breathing fishes in shallow waters will be advantageous.

Third-stage larvae of the genus Anisakis from the fish Leionura atun (Trichiuroidei: Perciformes) form a new cuticle and moult in vitro in about 72 h. If the culture medium is Krebs-Ringer under 5% carbon dioxide in air at 37°C, relatively few moult and survival is poor. But more moult and survival is enhanced if worms are incubated in tissue culture medium 199, even if the gas phase is air, although they moult more quickly if it contains 5% carbon dioxide. In both Krebs-Ringer and 199 the benefits of high concentrations of carbon dioxide only accrue if the gas is present during the first 40 h of incubation. Worms do not feed in these media until they have moulted.
