Abstract.
  • 1 The relative influences of temperature and availability of food on reproduction, survival and growth of all developmental stages of two carabid beetle species are discussed with special reference to the suggested relationship between availability of food, size of egg production and survival of adults from one breeding season to the next.
  • 2 Temperature as well as food supply influence the length of larval growth and adult body size. Beetles grown at low temperatures and low amounts of food are smaller than those grown at higher temperature and with more food.
  • 3 The number of eggs laid per female was correlated with the amount of food gathered. There was no inverse relationship (trade-off) between reproductive output and survival in the field until the next breeding season.
  • 4 In 1980 no significant relationship was found between winter mortality and the amounts of food gathered by beetles in the period after reproduction and before winter diapause. However, in 1981 in C. melanocephalus a lower number of starved beetles survived the winter than the fed ones and‘field’beetles.
  • 5 Only in the first part of the feeding activity period in autumn can enough food be gathered by C.melunocephalus for successful hibernation. In the second part of this period there is not enough food to build up the fat reserves needed to survive the winter.
  • 6 Difference in population fluctuations of both species are discussed in relation to their life histories.

通过田间调查和计算,明确了斑须蝽三代卵块呈聚集分布,且以负二项分布为主。理论抽样数当t=1.00,D=0.3时,n=13.091/+63.878,如果防治指标定为百株虫卵块12块时,则最大抽样数为173株,序贯抽样的累积虫卵块数量界限为:T0(N)=0.12N±0.4735。田间随机取样以平行线和Z字形为最佳。  相似文献

Contrasting litter effects on old field tree germination and emergence   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Because the fate of seeds is critical to understanding the invasion of old fields by trees, and plant litter is an important component defining the old field microsite of dispersed seeds, I investigated the effects of litter type (Solidago spp./goldenrod,Quercus spp./oak, mixed) and litter amount (100–800 g/m2) on tree seed germination and seedling emergence. I found that at all densities bothSolidago andQuercus litter greatly reduced emergence of the small-seeded, bird-dispersed species,Juniperus virginiana andCornus florida. For one of the large-seeded, mammal-dispersed species,Carya tomentosa, high densitySolidago litter and high density mixed litter treatments reduced emergence. For the other large-seeded species,Quercus rubra, the high density mixed litter treatment and all levels ofSolidago litter reduced emergence.Quercus seedlings emerged twice as often as the other three species in control pots without litter.Carya emerged before the other species but the high density oak treatment delayed the expansion of its cotyledons. My results suggest that litter may contribute to the slow rate of tree invasion and the low probability of tree establishment in old fields. However, old field litter studies taken together point to the difficulty in drawing general conclusions about any net effect of litter on old field tree establishment.  相似文献

Seven pairs of young adult male identical twins completed a negative energy balance protocol during which they exercised on cycle ergometers twice a day, 9 out of 10 days, over a period of 93 days while being kept on a constant daily energy and nutrient intake. The total energy deficit caused by exercise above the estimated energy cost of body weight maintenance reached 244 ± 9.8 MJ (Mean ± SEM). Baseline energy intake was estimated over a period of 17 days preceding the negative energy balance protocol. Mean body weight loss was 5.0 kg (SEM = 0.6) (p <0.001) and it was entirely accounted for by the loss of fat mass (p <0.001). Fat-free mass was unchanged. Body energy losses reached 191 MJ (SEM = 24) (p <0.001) which represented about 78% of the estimated energy deficit. Subcutaneous fat loss was slightly more pronounced on the trunk than on the limbs as estimated from skinfolds, circumferences, and computed tomography (CT). The reduction in CT-assessed abdominal visceral fat was quite striking, from 81 cm2 (SEM = 5) to 52 cm2 (SEM = 6) (p <0.001). At the same submaximal power output level, subjects oxidized more lipids than carbohydrates after the program as indicated by the changes in the respiratory exchange ratio (p <0.05). Intrapair resemblance was observed for the changes in body weight (p <0.05), fat mass (P <0.01), percent fat (p <0.01), body energy content (p <0.01), sum of 10 skinfolds (p <0.01), abdominal visceral fat (p <0.01), fasting plasma triglycerides (p <0.05) and cholesterol (p <0.05), maximal oxygen uptake (p <0.05), and respiratory exchange ratio during submaximal work (p <0.01). We conclude that even though there were large individual differences in response to the negative energy balance and exercise protocol, subjects with the same genotype were more alike in responses than subjects with different genotypes particularly for body fat, body energy, and abdominal visceral fat changes. High lipid oxidizers and low lipid oxidizers during sub-maximal exercise were also seen despite the fact that all subjects had experienced the same exercise and nutritional conditions for about three months.  相似文献

Mixed life cycle stages of rat-derived Pneumocystis carinii were isolated from host lungs and their sterols were compared with those present in lungs from normal and immunosuppressed uninfected rats. Gas-liquid chromatography consistently detected, resolved, and quantified 9, 10, and 20 sterol components in the total nonsaponifiable neutral lipid fraction of lungs from normal rats, lungs from immunosuppressed uninfected rats, and P. carinii preparations, respectively. In all samples, cholesterol was the most abundant sterol present, comprising 97%, 93%, and 78% of total sterols in lungs from normal rats, lungs from immunosuppressed uninfected rats, and P. carinii , respectively. Tentative identifications of several rat lung and P. carinii minor sterols were made based on gas-liquid chromatogram retention times and fragmentation patterns from mass spectral analyses. Campesterol (ergost-5-en-3-ol), cholest-5-en-3-one, and β -sitosterol (stigmast-5-en-3-ol) were among the minor components present in both types of lung controls, and were also components of P. carinii sterols. In contrast to lung controls, the sterols of P. carinii were enriched in C28 and C29 sterols with one or two double bonds, and a hydroxyl group at C-3 (ergost-5-en-3-ol, ergost-7-en-3-ol, ergosta-dien-3-ol, stigmast-5-en-3-ol, stigmast-7-en-3-ol and stigmasta-dien-3-ol). Steryl esters of P. carinii , probably stored in cytoplasmic lipid droplets, were dominated by those present in the host lung. In separate studies. 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A activity, a key enzyme in the regulation of sterol biosynthesis, was detected in purified P. carinii preparations and incorporation of radiolabeled squalene and mevalonate was observed. Together, these results suggest that the parasite readily takes up and incorporates host sterols, and that the organism synthesizes some of its own "metabolic sterols"  相似文献

The contribution of sediment interstitial water and the water column to the transpiration stream of Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vellozo) Verdcourt was determined to estimate the significance of mass flow in supply of sediment nutrients for plant growth. Sediment interstitial water accounted for about 2% of the water transpired over a 37 day period. Because of the small volume of water that originated in the sediment we concluded that mass flow did not significantly enhance nutrient supply to the roots of M. aquaticum. Relative growth rate (RGR) of adventitious, water roots was greater than whole plant RGR, and RGR of sediment roots was not significantly different from zero, indicating a shift in the biomass allocation after emergence of the apical meristem into the air. Water use, measured by the transpiration coefficient, averaged 260 ml H2O mg DW-1, which is similar to C-4 terrestrial plants. M. aquaticum has leaf characteristics commonly associated with xerophytic habitats. These characteristics may be necessary if a high transpiration rate and a mechanical requirement for high cell turgor pressure, required by a reliance upon hydrostatic pressure for support of the aerial stems, are mutually exclusive because of morphological constraints on hydraulic conductivity.  相似文献

The best available methods were used to search for an-giosperm hormones in the green alga Caulerpa paspa-loides (Bory) Greville. Solvent partitioning of methanol extracts led to acidic ethyl acetate fractions that it were run through high-performance liquid chromatography. Each of the resulting 25 fractions was divided in half so that one half was tested in the dwarf rice or lettuce hypocotyl assays for gibberellins and the other half was methylated and silylated for capillary gas chromatography combined with computerized mass spectrometry. By comparing algal mass spectra with spectra in the extensive library of mass spectra and associated Kovats Retention Indices that MacMillan's Bristol group has amassed, indole-3-acetic acid's presence in the alga was confirmed and dioxindole-3-acetic acid was found. However, despite the presence of several peaks of gibberellin-like activity in the bioassays, no gibberellin or gibberellin metabolite was found in the thousands of full mass spectra examined. The gibberellin-like activity in the acidic ethyl acetate fractions was therefore presumably not from any gibberellin known from vascular plants.  相似文献

A novel process has been used to biodegrade phenol present in an acidic (1 M HCI) and salty (5% w/w NaCl) synthetically bioreactor, in which the phenol present in the wastewater is separated from the inorganic components by means of a silicone rubber membrane. Transfer of the phenol from the wastewater and into a biological growth medium allows biodegradation to proceed under controlled conditions which are unaffected by the hostile inorganic composition of the wastewater. At a wastewater flow rate of 18 mL h(-1) (contact time 6 h), 98.5% of the phenol present in the wastewater at an inlet concentration of 1000 mg ( (-1) ) was degraded; at a contact time of 1.9 h, 65% of the phenol was degraded. Phenol degradation was accompanied by growth of a biofilm on the membrane tubes and by conversion of approximately 80% of the carbon entering the system to CO(2) carbon. Analysis of the transport of phenol across the membrane revealed that the major resistance to mass transfer arose in the diffusion of phenol across the silicone rubber membrane. A mathematical model was used to describe the transfer of phenol across the membrane and the subsequent diffusion and reaction of phenol in the biofilm attached to the membrane tube. This analysis showed that (a) the attached biofilm significantly lowers the mass transfer driving force for phenol across the membrane, and (b) oxygen concentration limits the phenol degradation rate in the biofilm. The microbial degradation of quinoline by Comamonas acidovorans was studied in a laboratory scale stirred tank reactor. In continuous culture experiments using quinoline as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen, it was shown by means of mass balances that quinoline was converted completely to biomass, carbon dioxide, and ammonia. Degradation rates up to 0.7 g/L h were obtained. Measured yield coefficients Y(x/s) for quinoline were about 0.7 g/g, which is in agreement with the theoretical value for complete mineralization. Kinetic constants based on Haldane substrate inhibition were evaluated. The values were mu(max) = 0.48 h(-1), K(i) = 69 mg/L, and K(s) < 1.45 mg/L. (c) 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Fatty acid-binding proteins (FABP) are abundant cytosolic proteins whose level is responsive to nutritional, endocrine, and a variety of pathological states. Although FABPs have been investigatedin vitro for several decades, little is known of their physiological function. Liver L-FABP binds both fatty acids and cholesterol. Competitive binding analysis and molecular modeling studies of L-FABP indicate the presence of two ligand binding pockets that accomodate one fatty acid each. One fatty acid binding site is identical to the cholesterol binding site. To test whether these observations obtainedin vitro were physiologically relevant, the cDNA encoding L-FABP was transfected into L-cells, a cell line with very low endogenous FABP and sterol carrier proteins. Uptake of both ligands did not differ between control cells and low expression clones. In contrast, both fatty acid uptake and cholesterol uptake were stimulated in the high expression cells. In high expression cells, uptake of fluorescent cis-parinaric acid was enhanced more than that of trans-parinaric acid. This is consistent with the preferential binding of cis-fatty acids to L-FABP but in contrast to the preferential binding of trans-parinaric acid to the L-cell plasma membrane fatty acid transporter (PMFABP). These data show that the level of cytosolic fatty acids in intact cells can regulate both the extent and specificity of fatty acid uptake. Last, sphingomyelinase treatment of L-cells released cholesterol from the plasma membrane to the cytoplasm and stimulated microsomal acyl-CoA: cholesteryl acyl transferase (ACAT). This process was accelerated in high expression cells.
