Algal farms maintained by different species of territorial herbivorous damselfishes vary in size, algal biomass, and species composition. To determine the factors that affect the structure of these farms, we compared farming behavior and intensity between two sympatric damselfish species, Stegastes nigricans (Lacepède) and S. obreptus (Whitley), which maintain two different types of farms in the Okinawa Islands, southern Japan. By weeding of indigestible algae and prompt exclusion of herbivorous fishes and grazing sea urchins, S. nigricans manage relatively small farms largely dominated by one algal crop species, Polysiphonia sp. In contrast, by delayed exclusion of herbivores, S. obreptus maintain larger farms invaded by diverse indigestible algae, such as Chondria sp. and Padina sp. As a result of intensive management, S. nigricans attains a higher algal biomass per area than does S. obreptus. This study provides a new perspective, as it suggests that damselfishes practise both intensive and extensive farming. The former results in small and highly productive monoculture farms of one palatable alga, while the latter leads to large, species-rich, mixed-culture farms.  相似文献

Eco-efficiency is a useful guide to dairy farm sustainability analysis aimed at increasing output (physical or value added) and minimizing environmental impacts (EIs). Widely used partial eco-efficiency ratios (EIs per some functional unit, e.g. kg milk) can be problematic because (i) substitution possibilities between EIs are ignored, (ii) multiple ratios can complicate decision making and (iii) EIs are not usually associated with just the functional unit in the ratio’s denominator. The objective of this study was to demonstrate a ‘global’ eco-efficiency modelling framework dealing with issues (i) to (iii) by combining Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) data and the multiple-input, multiple-output production efficiency method Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). With DEA each dairy farm’s outputs and LCA-derived EIs are aggregated into a single, relative, bounded, dimensionless eco-efficiency score, thus overcoming issues (i) to (iii). A novelty of this study is that a model providing a number of additional desirable properties was employed, known as the Range Adjusted Measure (RAM) of inefficiency. These properties altogether make RAM advantageous over other DEA models and are as follows. First, RAM is able to simultaneously minimize EIs and maximize outputs. Second, it indicates which EIs and/or outputs contribute the most to a farm’s eco-inefficiency. Third it can be used to rank farms in terms of eco-efficiency scores. Thus, non-parametric rank tests can be employed to test for significant differences in terms of eco-efficiency score ranks between different farm groups. An additional DEA methodology was employed to ‘correct’ the farms’ eco-efficiency scores for inefficiencies attributed to managerial factors. By removing managerial inefficiencies it was possible to detect differences in eco-efficiency between farms solely attributed to uncontrollable factors such as region. Such analysis is lacking in previous dairy studies combining LCA with DEA. RAM and the ‘corrective’ methodology were demonstrated with LCA data from French specialized dairy farms grouped by region (West France, Continental France) and feeding strategy (regardless of region). Mean eco-efficiency score ranks were significantly higher for farms with <10% and 10% to 30% maize than farms with >30% maize in the total forage area before correcting for managerial inefficiencies. Mean eco-efficiency score ranks were higher for West than Continental farms, but significantly higher only after correcting for managerial inefficiencies. These results helped identify the eco-efficiency potential of each region and feeding strategy and could therefore aid advisors and policy makers at farm or region/sector level. The proposed framework helped better measure and understand (dairy) farm eco-efficiency, both within and between different farm groups.  相似文献

A preliminary study to evaluate the possibilities of biological control procedures against parasites affecting livestock reared in a care farm has been conducted. Adults with mental disabilities were involved in spreading the spores of the filamentous fungus Mucor circinelloides directly onto the faeces, or as a food additive. In the first assay, the spores were sprayed directly onto the faeces of piglets and calves parasitised by roundworms (Ascaris suum) and liver flukes (Fasciola hepatica), respectively. In the second assay, the spores were mixed with on-farm mash feed. Participation of the adults in the experiments was fully satisfactory. In the manure sprayed Mucor spores, the viability of eggs of roundworms and flukes reduced by 53% and 74%, respectively. Significant reductions of viability of eggs of Ascaris (60%) and Fasciola (67%) in the faeces of piglets and calves given mash feed-added Mucor spores were achieved, which demonstrates their ability to survive in the digestive tract of the animals. It is concluded that biological control of parasites could be helpful to decrease the risk of infection in animals reared by intellectually disabled adults in a care farm, and it could motivate them to accomplish new tasks.  相似文献

Macaranga peltata (Roxb.) Mull. Arg. is a disturbance tolerant plant species with potential in mine wasteland reclamation. Our study aims at studying the phyto-extraction potential of M. peltata and determining plant-soil interaction factors effecting plant growth in iron ore mine spoils. Plants were grown in pure mine spoil and spoil amended with Farm Yard Manure (FYM) and Vermicompost (VC) along with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) species Rhizophagus irregularis. Pure and amended mine spoils were evaluated for nutrient status. Plant growth parameters and foliar nutrient contents were determined at the end of one year. FYM amendment in spoil significantly increased plant biomass compared to pure mine spoil and VC amended spoil. Foliar Fe accumulation was recorded highest (594.67μg/g) in pure spoil with no mortality but considerably affecting plant growth, thus proving to exhibit phyto-extraction potential. FYM and VC amendments reduced AM colonization (30.4% and 37% resp.) and plants showed a negative mycorrhizal dependency (–30.35 and –39.83 resp.). Soil pH and P levels and, foliar Fe accumulation are major factors determining plant growth in spoil. Sunlight‐driven catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 is an important reaction that generates useful chemicals and fuels and if operated at industrial scales can decrease greenhouse gas CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. In this work, the photomethanation of CO2 over highly dispersed nanostructured RuO2 catalysts on 3D silicon photonic crystal supports, achieving impressive conversion rates as high as 4.4 mmol gcat?1 h?1 at ambient temperatures under high‐intensity solar simulated irradiation, is reported. This performance is an order of magnitude greater than photomethanation rates achieved over control samples made of nanostructured RuO2 on silicon wafers. The high absorption and unique light‐harvesting properties of the silicon photonic crystal across the entire solar spectral wavelength range coupled with its large surface area are proposed to be responsible for the high methanation rates of the RuO2 photocatalyst. A density functional theory study on the reaction of CO2 with H2 revealed that H2 splits on the surface of the RuO2 to form hydroxyl groups that participate in the overall photomethanation process.  相似文献

Spatially explicit farm‐gate production costs and the economic potential of three types of energy crops grown on available marginal land in China for 2017 and 2040 were investigated using a spatial accounting method and construction of cost–supply curves. The average farm‐gate cost from all available marginal land was calculated as 32.9 CNY/GJ for Miscanthus Mode, 27.5 CNY/GJ for Switchgrass Mode, 32.4 CNY/GJ for Miscanthus & Switchgrass Mode, and 909 CNY/GJ for Jatropha Mode in 2017. The costs of Miscanthus and switchgrass were predicted to decrease by approximately 11%‐15%, whereas the cost of Jatropha was expected to increase by 5% in 2040. The cost of Jatropha varies significantly from 193 to 9,477 CNY/GJ across regions because of the huge differences in yield across regions. The economic potential of the marginal land was calculated as 28.7 EJ/year at a cost of less than 25 CNY/GJ for Miscanthus Mode, 4.0 EJ/year at a cost of less than 30 CNY/GJ for Switchgrass Mode, 29.6 EJ/year at a cost of less than 25 CNY/GJ for Miscanthus & Switchgrass Mode, and 0.1 EJ/year at a cost of less than 500 CNY/GJ for Jatropha Mode in 2017. It is not feasible to develop Jatropha production on marginal land based on existing technologies, given its high production costs. Therefore, the Miscanthus & Switchgrass Mode is the most economical way, because it achieves the highest economic potential compared with other modes. The sensitivity analysis showed that the farm‐gate costs of Miscanthus and switchgrass are most sensitive to uncertainties associated with yield reduction and harvesting costs, while, for Jatropha, the unpredictable yield has the greatest impact on its farm‐gate cost. This study can help policymakers and industrial stakeholders make strategic and tactical bioenergy development plans in China (exchange rate in 2017: 1€ = 7.63¥; all the joules in this paper are higher heat value).  相似文献

Microcotyle sebastis is a gill monogenean ectoparasite that causes serious problems in the mariculture of the Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. In this study, we isolated the parasite from fish farms along the coasts of Tongyeong, South Korea in 2016, and characterized its infection, morphology and molecular phylogeny. The prevalence of M. sebastis infection during the study period ranged from 46.7% to 96.7%, and the mean intensity was 2.3 to 31.4 ind./fish, indicating that the fish was constantly exposed to parasitic infections throughout the year. Morphological observations under light and scanning electron microscopes of the M. sebastis isolates in this study showed the typical characteristics of the anterior prohaptor and posterior opisthaptor of monogenean parasites. In phylogenetic trees reconstructed using the nuclear 28S ribosomal RNA gene and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene (cox1), they consistently clustered together with their congeneric species, and showed the closest phylogenetic relationships to M. caudata and M. kasago in the cox1 tree.  相似文献

Thirty microalgal strains were screened in the laboratory for their biomass productivity and lipid content. Four strains (two marine and two freshwater), selected because robust, highly productive and with a relatively high lipid content, were cultivated under nitrogen deprivation in 0.6-L bubbled tubes. Only the two marine microalgae accumulated lipid under such conditions. One of them, the eustigmatophyte Nannochloropsis sp. F&M-M24, which attained 60% lipid content after nitrogen starvation, was grown in a 20-L Flat Alveolar Panel photobioreactor to study the influence of irradiance and nutrient (nitrogen or phosphorus) deprivation on fatty acid accumulation. Fatty acid content increased with high irradiances (up to 32.5% of dry biomass) and following both nitrogen and phosphorus deprivation (up to about 50%). To evaluate its lipid production potential under natural sunlight, the strain was grown outdoors in 110-L Green Wall Panel photobioreactors under nutrient sufficient and deficient conditions. Lipid productivity increased from 117 mg/L/day in nutrient sufficient media (with an average biomass productivity of 0.36 g/L/day and 32% lipid content) to 204 mg/L/day (with an average biomass productivity of 0.30 g/L/day and more than 60% final lipid content) in nitrogen deprived media. In a two-phase cultivation process (a nutrient sufficient phase to produce the inoculum followed by a nitrogen deprived phase to boost lipid synthesis) the oil production potential could be projected to be more than 90 kg per hectare per day. This is the first report of an increase of both lipid content and areal lipid productivity attained through nutrient deprivation in an outdoor algal culture. The experiments showed that this marine eustigmatophyte has the potential for an annual production of 20 tons of lipid per hectare in the Mediterranean climate and of more than 30 tons of lipid per hectare in sunny tropical areas.  相似文献

基于恒湖农场茶叶港草洲4个样带、19个样地(5 m×5 m)沿海拔高程(高高程-湖边、中高程-洲滩中间、低高程-洲滩边缘)调查得到的植被数据,用4种生态位模型拟合研究该区域不同海拔高程段植物种-多度分布格局。结果表明:(1)随着海拔高程下降,群落偶见种不断减少,且平均盖度均较低;常见种数目保持不变,其中优势种灰化薹草(Carex cinerascens Kukenth)平均盖度、平均高度持续升高,在群落中保持较高的优势地位;(2)3个高程段内生态位优先占领模型对群落物种-多度分布格局有较高的拟合优度(P < 0.05,AIC值分别为-149.41、-61.11、-25.63),断棍模型、重叠生态位模型、优势优先模型总体上拟合效果较差(P < 0.05,但AIC值均较大)。为研究区植物群落生物多样性的保护和构建机制的探索提供了一定参考。  相似文献

This study examined fertilization rates, survival and early life‐trait differences of pure farm, wild and first generation (F1) hybrid origin embryos after crossing farm and wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar. Results show that despite a trend towards higher in vitro fertilization success for wild females, differences in fertilization success in river water are not significantly different among crosses. In a hatchery environment, wild females' progeny (pure wild and hybrids with wild maternal parent) hatched 7–11 days earlier than pure farm crosses and hybrids with farm maternal parents. In addition, pure wild progeny had higher total lengths (LT) at hatch than pure farm crosses and hybrids. Directions in trait differences need to be tested in a river environment, but results clearly show the maternal influence on early stages beyond egg‐size differences. Differences in LT were no longer significant at 70 days post hatch (shortly after the onset of exogenous feeding) showing the need to investigate later developmental stages to better assess somatic growth disparities due to genetic differences. Higher mortality rates of the most likely hybrids (farm female × wild male hybrids) at egg and fry stages and their delayed hatch suggest that these F1 hybrids might be less likely to survive the early larval stages than wild stocks.  相似文献
