Abstract

In the terrestrial crustacean Armadillidium vulgare, the prolonged presence of males along with females is known to boost female reproductive physiology, and the so-called ‘male-effect’ was best characterized by a significant shortening of the pre-parturial intermoult (PPI) during which oocyte maturation spontaneously takes place. Continuous presence of a male over that period can speed up vitellogenesis and the moulting cycle, so to reduce female PPI by 15–20 days (shortening of 30–40%, in comparison to females reared with other females or in isolation, respectively). In the last investigation on the subject, we revealed that sexual interactions may start much sooner than previously thought in this species, and suggested that the observed ‘male-effect’ may likely result from early mating stimulations. Here we tested the specific effect of controlled mating interactions (one or two mating events at different times) on female PPI. We revealed that male presence for the time (about 2 h) that allowed a single mating to occur was enough to reduce the female intermoult by about 10 days (shortening of 19%, in comparison to females reared in similar conditions but in the absence of a mating interaction). Moreover, results indicate that the earlier and longer the copulations, the stronger the ‘male-effect’. Altogether, the data support the conclusion that A. vulgare females are adjust their reproductive physiology according to the presence/absence and the intensity of male mating stimuli. We place the findings in a broader ecological context, revise the so far prevailing view on the ‘male-effect’, and stress its possible significance in relation to the occurrence of feminising bacteria in this and other terrestrial isopod species.  相似文献

  1. Species distribution models (SDM) have been increasingly developed in recent years, but their validity is questioned. Their assessment can be improved by the use of independent data, but this can be difficult to obtain and prohibitive to collect. Standardized data from citizen science may be used to establish external evaluation datasets and to improve SDM validation and applicability.
  2. We used opportunistic presence‐only data along with presence–absence data from a standardized citizen science program to establish and assess habitat suitability maps for 9 species of amphibian in western France. We assessed Generalized Additive and Random Forest Models’ performance by (1) cross‐validation using 30% of the opportunistic dataset used to calibrate the model or (2) external validation using different independent datasets derived from citizen science monitoring. We tested the effects of applying different combinations of filters to the citizen data and of complementing it with additional standardized fieldwork.

Cross‐validation with an internal evaluation dataset resulted in higher AUC (Area Under the receiver operating Curve) than external evaluation causing overestimation of model accuracy and did not select the same models; models integrating sampling effort performed better with external validation. AUC, specificity, and sensitivity of models calculated with different filtered external datasets differed for some species. However, for most species, complementary fieldwork was not necessary to obtain coherent results, as long as the citizen science data were strongly filtered.
  4. Since external validation methods using independent data are considered more robust, filtering data from citizen sciences may make a valuable contribution to the assessment of SDM. Limited complementary fieldwork with volunteer''s participation to complete ecological gradients may also possibly enhance citizen involvement and lead to better use of SDM in decision processes for nature conservation.

Small, shallow circular pits containing the Atlantic sea pansy, Renilla reniformis, were fairly common at one locality on the lower foreshore of Kiawah Island in June, 1997. Many of the pits were positioned on the stoss side of sand ripples; the organisms were oriented with their bilateral plane of symmetry essentially parallel to ripple crests. If preserved as concave epireliefs or convex hyporeliefs on bedding surfaces, such pits would be difficult not only to attribute to a trace producer or traditional ethologic category, but to identify as trace fossils in the first place.  相似文献

We discuss Bayesian log-linear models for incomplete contingency tables with both missing and interval censored cells, with the aim of obtaining reliable population size estimates. We also discuss use of external information on the censoring probability, which may substantially reduce uncertainty. We show in simulation that information on lower bounds and external information can each improve the mean squared error of population size estimates, even when the external information is not completely accurate. We conclude with an original example on estimation of prevalence of multiple sclerosis in the metropolitan area of Rome, where five out of six lists have interval censored counts. External information comes from mortality rates of multiple sclerosis patients.  相似文献

Stimuli which modulate oviposition of P. papatasi were investigated to improve insectary breeding efficiency. Oviposition and survival of gravid females were observed weekly during April-December 1987, in plastic cages at 28 +/- 1 degrees C with L:D 17:7. Oviposition of controls was subject to seasonal variation despite the relatively uniform insectary conditions. From April to mid-October (summer), mean weekly oviposition ranged from 11.6 to 18.6 eggs per fly, dropping to 1.4 eggs/fly in November (winter). Monthly yields of eggs were found to correlate with the seasonal cycle of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight. This was attributed to an endogenous rhythm since the flies were not normally exposed to UV under insectary conditions. Short exposure to UV sources of 254 nm and 312 nm, but not white light, raised the low rate of oviposition in October-November from 1.4 to 16.8-29.6 eggs/female/week, but female mortality also increased highly significantly. It is suggested that the seasonal oviposition cycle of P.papatasi is set by levels of UV irradiation. In the warm season oviposition was promoted, as compared to controls, by furrows in plaster of Paris lining the bottom of cages (29.6 v. 10.2 eggs/female) and by cow manure in the cages (39.7 v. 18.2 eggs/female), but the combination of both stimuli gave no greater fecundity (40.9 v. 20.9 eggs/female). Oviposition decreased when larvae were present (3.9 v. 15.0 eggs/female) and in half-volume cages (3.9 v. 12.5 eggs/female/week). Under standard insectary conditions, mean weekly mortality-rates of P.papatasi females were 18.3 +/- 4.8% in October-November and 36.5-59.1% during the warmer months. None of the experimental conditions yielded any significant improvement in survival-rates.  相似文献

Theoretical investigations on the diblock molecular diode, thiophene–thiazole compound, have been carried out at the Hartree–Fock (HF) level by considering the interaction under the external bias. They demonstrate that the electronic structures of this kind of diode molecule are essentially different from those based on the Aviram and Ratner model, in which donor and acceptor π-conjugated segments are separated by an insulating σ-bonded segment, in terms of the energy levels of the frontier molecular orbitals as well as their spatial distributions. The introduction of the external bias modifies both the geometric and electronic structures. In particular, the spatial distributions of the frontier molecular orbitals are also shifted under the external bias. Moreover, all these features show a strong dependence on the polarity of the applied bias due to the build in intrinsic molecular asymmetric structures, which could be used to intuitively interpret the asymmetrical current–voltage behaviours of molecules.  相似文献

Tactile stimuli provide animals with important information about the environment, including physical features such as obstacles, and biologically relevant cues related to food, mates, hosts and predators. The antennae, the principal sensory organs of insects, house an array of sensory receptors for olfaction, gustation, audition, nociception, balance, stability, graviception, static electric fields, and thermo-, hygro- and mechanoreception. The antennae, being the anteriormost sensory appendages, play a prominent role in social interactions with conspecifics that involve primarily chemosensory and tactile stimuli. In the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) antennal contact during social interactions modulates brain-regulated juvenile hormone production, ultimately accelerating the reproductive rate in females. The primary sensory modality mediating this social facilitation of reproduction is antennal mechanoreception. We investigated the key elements, or stimulus features, of antennal contact that socially facilitate reproduction in B. germanica females. Using motor-driven antenna mimics, we assessed the physiological responses of females to artificial tactile stimulation. Our results indicate that tactile stimulation with artificial materials, some deviating significantly from the native antennal morphology, can facilitate female reproduction. However, none of the artificial stimuli matched the effects of social interactions with a conspecific female.  相似文献

Objective5α-Reductase type 2 (5α-RD2) deficiency causes variable degrees of undervirilization in patients. The correlation between its genotype and phenotype is unclear.MethodsWe retrospectively evaluated 103 patients with 46,XY disorders of sex development who were diagnosed with 5α-RD2 deficiency.ResultsThe prevalence of female sex assignment (P = .008) and the incidences of cryptorchidism (P = .0003) and bifid scrotum (P = .0002) in the non-p.R227Q variant group were higher, but there were no significant differences in the incidences of hypospadias and isolated microphallus. The external masculinization score in the non-p.R227Q variant group was lower than that in the homozygous p.R227Q variant (P = .019) and compound heterozygous p.R227Q variant groups (P = .013). The level of anti-Mullerian hormone in the non-p.R227Q variant group was lower than that in the homozygous p.R227Q variant (P < .001) and compound heterozygous p.R227Q variant groups (P = .006). The testosterone-to-dihydrotestosterone ratio of the homozygous p.R227Q variant group was higher than that of the non-p.R227Q variant (P = .018) and compound heterozygous p.R227Q variant groups (P = .029). Twenty-three reportedly pathogenic variants and 11 novel steroid 5α-reductase 2 (SRD5A2) variants were identified.ConclusionCompared with patients without p.R227Q, patients with p.R227Q exhibited higher external masculinization scores and anti-Mullerian hormone expression, a lower prevalence of female sex assignment, and lower incidences of cryptorchidism and bifid scrotum. We identified 23 reportedly pathogenic SRD5A2 variants and 11 novel SRD5A2 variants that led to 5α-RD2 deficiency. We established a genotype-phenotype correlation, and patients with p.R227Q showed a relatively mild phenotype.  相似文献
