This paper addresses the visual culture of late-19th-century experimental physiology. Taking the case of Johann Nepomuk Czermak (1828–1873) as a key example, it argues that images played a crucial role in acquiring experimental physiological skills. Czermak, Emil Du Bois-Reymond (1818–1896) and other late-19th-century physiologists sought to present the achievements and perspective of their discipline by way of immediate visual perception (unmittelbare Anschauung). However, the images they produced and presented for this purpose were strongly mediated. By means of specifically designed instruments, such as the cardioscope, the contraction telegraph, and the frog pistol, and of specifically constructed rooms, so-called spectatoriums, physiologists trained and controlled the perception of their students before allowing them to conduct experiments on their own. Studying the material culture of physiological image production reveals that technological resources such as telegraphy, photography, and even railways contributed to making physiological facts anschaulich. At the same time, it shows that the more traditional image techniques of anatomy played an important role in physiological lecture halls, especially when it came to displaying the details of vivisection experiments to the public. Thus, the images of late 19th century physiology stood half-way between machines and organisms, between books and instruments.This paper was written in the context of ten project, The Experimentalizaiton of Life: Configurations of Life Sciences, Art, and Technology (1830–1930). The project is based at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Dept. III: Hans-Jörg Rheinberger), Berlin, and receives funding from the Volkswagen Stiftung, Hannover. There is a place for the physical anthropologist in biomedical teaching and research because of the special and unique skills possessed by this individual. However, eventual success in the health sciences environment requires the student to obtain the knowledge and background for functionally oriented teaching and research. Students interested in a biomedical teaching and research career must prepare themselves methodologically and theoretically. This requires: (1) teaching qualifications, (2) an increased emphasis on methodology and technology, (3) an increased emphasis on research and experimental design, (4) appropriate interdisciplinary courses which provide the background for both teaching and research, (5) increased interaction with graduate faculty active in research, and (6) the latitude to adapt the graduate program to meet these specific needs. Students who finish their graduate training with a marketable skill, and who can apply their unique talents to a specialized area, will have broad appeal in the job market and will considerably strengthen their career opportunities.  相似文献

目的:探讨介入手术远程演示教学系统的应用及效果。方法:采取多机组、多屏幕实况转播,将导管室的高清血管造影图像、术野图像、全景图像传输到会场。结果:学员对介入手术远程转播满意度为100%,其中最满意的是转播交互环节。本次共进行10台手术远程转播,无一例转播相关并发症发生,患者对治疗评价均及保护隐私情况非常满意。基本实现了导管室与会场的双向音视频互动,学员同术者在手术过程中的直接交流起到了较好的教学效果。结论:介入手术演示已经成为继续医学教育必不可少的手段,数字化介入手术转播是将来介入手术转播的发展方向。  相似文献

目的:探讨生物化学检验技术实验教学(Experimental biochemistry inspection teaching,EBIT)与开放式综合实验设计(Open comprehensive experiment design,OCED)的初步效果,为EBIT教学提供新型选择方案。方法:选择2012届我们所带教医学检验专业的2个班级111例学生作为研究对象,分别归入观察组和对照组,其中观察组56例,对照组55例。对照组EBIT中予以传统的模式,观察组则采用OCED模式。对比两组实验成绩、教学效果的满意度。结果:观察组的合格率显著高于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。观察组对教学效果的满意度显著高于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论:OCED方式应用于EBIT过程中,可获得较好的教学效果,值得推荐。  相似文献

A large body of theory predicts that populations diffusing in heterogeneous environments reach higher total size than if non‐diffusing, and, paradoxically, higher size than in a corresponding homogeneous environment. However, this theory and its assumptions have not been rigorously tested. Here, we extended previous theory to include exploitable resources, proving qualitatively novel results, which we tested experimentally using spatially diffusing laboratory populations of yeast. Consistent with previous theory, we predicted and experimentally observed that spatial diffusion increased total equilibrium population abundance in heterogeneous environments, with the effect size depending on the relationship between r and K. Refuting previous theory, however, we discovered that homogeneously distributed resources support higher total carrying capacity than heterogeneously distributed resources, even with species diffusion. Our results provide rigorous experimental tests of new and old theory, demonstrating how the traditional notion of carrying capacity is ambiguous for populations diffusing in spatially heterogeneous environments.  相似文献

目的观察根管治疗失败病例根管内分离的主要微生物对狗牙根尖周组织的影响。方法选择成年健康杂种狗5只,共有40个实验牙,80个实验牙根。实验一组于狗牙根管内接种溶血链球菌、微小消化链球菌、产黑色素类杆菌及具核梭杆菌;实验二组于狗牙根管内接种粪肠球菌及上述4种细菌;对照组不接种细菌。对狗牙完成根管治疗。分别于治疗后3、6、12个月拍摄根尖X线片,并记录牙齿和根尖周组织的临床表现;根管治疗后12个月处死动物,制备根尖周组织病理标本,观察根尖周骨组织破坏情况;动物处死前,根管内进行微生物的取样、培养和鉴定。结果实验组可见狗牙槽骨尖周骨质吸收,牙周膜纤维排列受到破坏,实验二组对根尖周破坏重于实验一组,对照组根尖周骨组织无破坏。结论从根管治疗失败病例根管内分离的主要微生物粪肠球菌、溶血链球菌、微小消化链球菌、产黑色素类杆菌及具核梭杆菌对狗牙根尖周组织有明显的破坏作用。  相似文献

The grasshopper Podisma tyatiensis, which is distributed only at the summit of Mount Tyatya on Kunashiri Island, the Kuril Islands, is closely related to Podisma sapporensis, which has a broad distribution range on the islands of northern Japan and the Russian Far East (Hokkaido, Sakhalin and Kunashiri). The present study examined the taxonomic status of P. tyatiensis by crossing P. tyatiensis males with P. sapporensis females from Sakhalin. More than 90% of eggs from intrapopulation crosses developed to at least the last embryonic stage, whereas only 64% of eggs from the interpopulation crosses developed into that embryonic stage. Cytogenetic observations of prediapause embryos showed that the interpopulation crosses always led to the production of unfertilized eggs, and that all of the developing embryos had the maternal genome only. A mixture of haploid and diploid cells of maternal origin was found in most of those embryos. This result shows that unfertilized eggs produced by P. sapporensis females from Sakhalin developed parthenogenetically to at least the embryonic stage before hatching. The present crossing experiments revealed a high level of incompatibility between the genomes of the Sakhalin population and the Tyatya population, and confirmed the full species status of P. tyatiensis.  相似文献
