The role of Dufour's gland secretions in bees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
ABSTRACT. Dufour's gland of bees is often hypertrophied and an extremely rich source of diverse natural products. In the ground-dwelling bees the secretion is mostly used for lining the brood cell with a hydrophobic lining. Whereas in several species the secretion is smeared on the cell walls without any modification, in others the hydrophobic lining is formed only after a chemical transformation of the secretion. The diversity of the chemical means by which hydrophobicity of the brood cells is achieved suggests that it has evolved repeatedly in the bees. In addition to lining their brood cells, several species use Dufour's gland secretion to mark their nest entrance. Analyses of single glands from various species reveal that each bee possesses its own individual composition, expressed in specific relative amounts of each component. Interestingly in the social halictid Evylaeus malachurum , nestmates (considered as sisters) are more similar to each other than non-related bees. The possible functional evolution of the glandular exudate from structural functions to communication and its implications for our understanding of eusociality in bees, is discussed.  相似文献

We have attempted to demonstrate a pancreatic secretory response to intraduodenal amino acids in the anesthetized cat. In four cats stimulated with supramaximal doses of secretin, protein concentrations in pancreatic juice were measured after intraduodenal bolus injection of various amino acids, IV CCK, or electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve. In addition, the duodenum was perfused with phenylalanine (50 mM) for 30 min in two cats, and the vagus nerve stimulated electrically for 15 min in one. In no case did amino acids produce pancreatic protein secretion, whereas CCK and vagal stimulation always did so. We conclude that this insensitivity to amino acids in the cat is a species difference from the dog and man.  相似文献

The present study describes the morphology of the sternum V gland of three caddisfly species, Stenopsyche marmorata Navas, Eubasilissa regina (McLachlan) and Nemotaulius admorsus (McLachlan), each of which belongs to a different family of the order Trichoptera, using light and scanning electron microscopy. In both sexes of these three species, the gland orifices are located on the sides of the sternum V as crescent-shaped slits, and are connected with the glandular tissue via cuticular gland ducts. The shapes of glands differ greatly among species; a slender ampullar form in S. marmorata , a flattened saccular form (horseshoe shape) in E. regina and a kidney shape in N. admorsus . The glands are composed of four essential components: large secretory cells, small reservoir cells, the lining of the reservoir and the gland duct. In S. marmorata and E. regina , additional components, muscle fibers, are present around the small reservoir cells. The secretory cells covering the whole outer surface of the gland are very large, and form many bunches in S. marmorata and E. regina , but do not form them in N. admorsus . The small reservoir cells lie inside the layer of the secretory cells and are tightly connected with the cuticular lining of the reservoir. The linings become thick cuticular ducts near the gland orifices. Histological features suggest that the secretory cells of the sternum V gland of Trichoptera belong to the type of class 3 cells in insect epidermal glands.  相似文献

Summary Pancreatic acinar cells of rats obtained before (21 days of age) and after (31 and 42 days) weaning were morphometrically examined at six evenly spaced times during 24 h.Morphometric analysis demonstrated clear-cut variations in the average volume of the cell and nucleus, the incidence of binucleate acinar cells, and the volume and numerical densities of various cytoplasmic organelles during 24 h, at each stage. The daily mean values and variation of these parameters at 21 days clearly differed from those at 31 and 42 days. In particular, changes in the volume densities of rER and zymogen granules were bimodal at 21 days, whereas they were unimodal at 31 and 42 days. Moreoever, some parameters also differed between 31 and 42 days, the main difference being an 8 h time shift in the variation curves of the volume densities of rER and zymogen granules.These findings indicate that morphometric analysis of the subcellular structures of pancreatic acinar cells during 24 h can be used to determine their developmental stage.  相似文献

In the nearctic predaceous stink bugs (Asopinae), Perillus bioculatus and Stiretrus anchorago, and the neotropical asopine, Oplomus severus, males possess conspicuous sternal glands that are absent in females. In each of these species, the male sternal gland secretion contains predominantly a single compound; 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecyl isovalerate in the allopatric species, P. bioculatus and O. severus, and 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecanol in S. anchorago, a species sympatric with P. bioculatus. The function of the sternal gland secretions from asopine hemipterans is unknown.  相似文献

Orcadian rhythmicity of the structural morphometric model of rat endocrine pancreas has been studied in 24 Wistar female rats, four months old, kept in LD 12:12. The following parameters were evaluated: the volume fractions of nucleus and cytoplasm of exocrine cells, the size distribution and number in unit tissue volume of acinar cell nuclei, the mean nuclear diameter, the shape coefficient of glandular acini (that is the ratio acinar area/perimeter2 which indicates the shifting of structures from circularity). A statistically significant circadian rhythm was demonstrated for the shape coefficient of glandular acini. Results obtained in the present experiment are compared with data recorded in a previous study.  相似文献

Application of the laser-based technique of photon correlation spectroscopy to anin vitro study of the ionic stability and interaction kinetics of zymogen granules isolated from rat exocrine pancreas is described here. In addition the separation from pancreatic acinar cell cytosol of a factor which stabilizes isolated zymogen granules and inhibits cation-induced granule aggregation is outlined. The basis of this action and the significance of the cytosolic inhibitory factor in the regulation of granule mobility and exocytosisin vivo is discussed.  相似文献
