Recent molecular surveys of the Swertiinae (Gentianaceae–Gentianeae) revealed unexpected phylogenetic relationships, including polyphyly of the genera Gentianella , Jaeschkea , Lomatogonium and Swertia . To find new non-molecular characters supporting the phylogeny, we examined the exine variation of 73 species of all major lineages of subtribe Swertiinae using environmental scanning electron miscroscopy supplementing older, mainly light microscopical, studies. In contrast to previous studies, we were able to pick out taxa from phylogenetic key positions with particular focus on Swertia . Many distantly related taxa such as parts of Frasera , Gentianopsis , Halenia , Gentianella , Megacodon and several lineages of Swertia share a striate–reticulate or reticulate exine pattern. This is interpreted as the plesiomorphic character state of Swertiinae. There is also considerable variation of derived patterns; for example, different types of microechinate or almost smooth pollen was repeatedly observed in distantly related groups. Another extreme was the ring-shaped reticulation found in a North American species of Gentianopsis . Unfortunately, major relationships as revealed by molecular analyses were rarely supported because of the abundance of the plesiomorphic type and homoplasy even on low taxonomic levels; for example, within Lomatogonium . Exine variation was particularly useful in characterizing independent lineages of Swertia . For example, according to pollen characters and in agreement with other data, the Asian Swertia cuneata is a sister group of a strongly diversified African lineage and Swertia yunnanensis , which is rather aberrant in flower morphology, seems close to parts of Lomatogonium . © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 323–341. 相似文献

The Guyana Highland-centred genera, or Stenopadus group, are a complex of species that belong to the tribes Mutisieae and Stifftieae of Asteraceae. The pollen morphologies of 29 species, from 12 of 13 genera of this complex, are described and illustrated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The exine sculpture and structure are highly significant. Four exine types, previously characterized, were distinguished: Gongylolepis , Wunderlichia , Mutisia , and Stenopadus . The characterization of the Stenopadus exine type is enlarged here. These exine types led to the recognition of four well-defined pollen types, whereas the spine length and exine thickness characterized six subtypes. Pollen types circumscribe genera or groups of genera, and some subtypes distinguish species. The pollen morphology within the complex is discussed in relation to the rest of Mutisioideae and other palynologically allied tribes of Cichorioideae. There is little correlation between pollen types and tribes; only the Stenopadus exine type is exclusive to the Stifftieae tribe. The remaining types are shared by the two tribes of the complex. Mature pollen grains ofNymphaea mexicana have a verrucate proximal surface, a psilate distal surface and an anazonasulculus (encircling-sulcate aperture). The developmental events of microspores and tapetal cells were observed with TEM and SEM. Radially oriented substructural elements are seen in the microspore surface coating ofNymphaea mexicana from the early tetrad stage through the whole exine development. These elements, being the structural units of the microspore surface matrix (glycocalyx), are associated with sporopollenin precursor accumulation. In young free microspores, radially oriented elements are observed at both proximal and distal poles as a palisade between the endexine and plasmalemma.—Several points are discussed: (1) the initial and mature forms of exine substructure elements; (2) the significance of exine substructure for realisation of morphogenetic processes; (3) the ways by which verrucate and psilate sculpture patterns are developed. 相似文献

The acetolysis method intreduced byGunnar Erdtman is still a very welcome and highly successful technique in palynology. However, acetolysis destroys all pollen material with the exception of sporopollenin that forms the outer pollen wall, the exine. Modern palynology in its application to plant systematics and phylogeny must consider all sporoderm characters, not only those of the exine. The neglect of the intine may distort some principal palynological aspects. This is illustrated by cases of total breakdown or gross modification of thin exine structures (e.g. inBeilschmiedia, Strelitzia) and by the clarification of apertures (e.g.,Polyalthia, Fissistigma, Calluna). In our view the investigation of both acetolysed and non-acetolysed pollen is obligatory for a well balanced view of pollen structure and function. 相似文献

Radial sculptural elements (e.g. ribs, lirae), formed by imbrication of two succeeding shell lamellae are found in members of both the Nautiloidea (Cymatoceras) and Ammonoidea (Phylloceratinae and Aspidoceratinae). Their formation involves periodic cessation of shell growth due to weak to moderate withdrawal of the shell secreting mantle. The radial lirae (0.5–1.5 mm in width) of Phylloceratinae and Aspidoceratinae (Aspidoceras and Pseudowaagenia) are created by the succession of sigmoid lamellae of the organic periostracum or of the outer prismatic layer, respectively. Each lira has a characteristic adorally‐projecting, scythe‐like appendage, arising from its crest. The prismatic lirae of Aspidoceras and Pseudowaagenia are analogous to the larger scaled pseudoribs of Cymatoceras. Garland‐like lamellae of the outer prismatic layer form the radial lirae of Mirosphinctes and Epaspidoceras (Aspidoceratinae), but these lack a conspicuous, projecting scythe‐like appendage. Additional prismatic cement is formed within adoral, oval hollow spaces of scythe‐appendage‐bearing lirae, either through diagenetic crystal growth, remote biomineralization or as a component of the dorsal shell. In Aspidoceratinae these prismatic infillings are replaced by a continuous herringbone layer, accompanied by a reduction of the lirae. 相似文献

Colour patterns on mollusc shells are usually controlled by one-dimensional morphogenetic programmes. In adult cypraeids, by comparison, colour patterns are two-dimensional in morphogenesis and three-dimensional in structure. Visible patterns usually result from the uneven thickness of a pigmented layer, rather than from a spatially uneven concentration of pigment. Specialized sculptures in a few cypraeids may be regarded as extreme examples of three-dimensional colour patterns. Morphogenesis of some patterns is controlled by three-dimensional relief of the underlying shell surface. Computer models successfully reproduce key characteristics of cypraeid colour patterns. Since most cypraeids possess colour patterns, while few of the combinations of factors controlling these programmes yield a pattern, these patterns can be expected to have a yet undemonstrated adaptive value. 相似文献

Abstract. Barley plants ( Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Midas) raised under controlled environmental conditions were sprayed with either of the gametocides Ethrel and RH-531. At various times after spraying the anthers were fixed for light and electron microscopy. Abortion of sporogenous cells occurred in plants sprayed at both pre- and post-meiotic stages of microsporogenesis. In contrast, cells of the tapetum were insensitive to the immediate effects of gametocides. The cytological effects of the gametocides are similar to those induced by male sterile genes in a variety of plants. These range from the induction of additional mitotic divisions in the pollen mother cells to exine malformations on developing microspores. These observations are discussed in terms of the control mechanisms operating during microsporogenesis. 相似文献

Different members of the Angiosperm familiesOleaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Plantaginaceae andAsteraceae with variable modes of pollination were studied in relation to ultrastructure of pollenkitt and exine. In entomophilous representatives the mostly electron-dense and homogeneous pollenkitt is located on the outside layer of the exine, making the pollen sticky. In related anemophilous taxa the pollenkitt mostly is electrontransparent and inhomogeneous; it becomes inactive by remaining in the loculus or sinking to the bottom of the exine caves; this makes the pollen powdery. According to such criteria,Fraxinus ornus andRhinanthus serotinus are entomophilous, whileFraxinus excelsior is anemophilous. The pollen ofLathraea squamaria eventually becomes powdery and suited for wind dispersal. The broad transition field between entomo- and anemophily is demonstrated byPlantago andArtemisia. Plantago lanceolata is anemophilous, whilePl. serpentina andPl. media are amphiphilous.Artemisia nitida andA. mutellina are entomophilous,A. absinthium, A. pedemontana andA. gabriellae are amphiphilous, but tend towards entomo- (A. absinthium) or anemophily (A. gabriellae), whileA. chamaemelifolia and especiallyA. vulgaris are anemophilous. 相似文献
