For over three decades, the Johansson zones have been widely used in epiphyte studies as a way of stratifying the host tree into habitat zones. The usefulness of this system, however, has been questioned. We test the effectiveness of the Johansson zones by grouping epiphyte species by the substrate and microclimatic attributes of their individual occurrences and assessing the fidelity of these groups to the Johansson zones. Habitat characteristics were recorded for every individual epiphyte on 30 trees in the lower montane rain forests of northeastern Australia. Twenty‐four epiphyte species were agglomerated into four groups using Ward's method. Group 4 was highly distinct and included shade‐loving species and nomadic vines from the lower zones of the host trees. Group 3 contained species from the most exposed habitats. Group 1 had higher light levels and lower substrate thickness than Group 2, yet both groups had close to identical distributions over the Johansson zones. This suggests that groups of epiphyte species may utilize different micro‐sites within the same zone. While the Johansson zones are a useful tool in epiphyte studies, finer partitioning of habitat within the host tree may be missed.  相似文献

Two distinct morphological forms characterize the ontogeny of many epiphytic bromeliads. Smaller plants exhibit an atmospheric habit, while larger plants form water‐impounding tanks. The study of the functional significance of heteroblasty in epiphytes is severely hampered by considerable size‐related variation in morphological, anatomical and physiological parameters. To overcome this problem, plants of varying size of both atmospheric and tank form were included in the present study with Vriesea sanguinolenta. The results show that virtually all morphological, anatomical and physiological characteristics vary during ontogeny, but changes were rarely directly related to the step change in gross morphology. Changes were either: (1) gradual from smallest atmospheric to small tank (e.g. leaf divergence angles, reduction in photosystem II efficiency during drought, speed of recovery after drought); (2) there was no change between atmospheric and small tank, but a gradual or step change within the tank form (stomatal density, relationship of leaf N and specific leaf area); or (3) developmental patterns were more complicated with decreases and increases during ontogeny (photosynthetic capacity, carbon isotope ratios, abscisic acid levels during drought). Although the comparisons between ontogenetic phases were always confounded by size differences, a hypothetical small tank plant is expected to suffer higher water loss than a real atmospheric, whereas a hypothetical, large atmospheric plant would show reduced access to resources, such as nutrients, in comparison with the real tank. The present results are consistent with the notion of heteroblasty as an adaptation of early ontogenetic stages to drought, but highlight that size‐related variation greatly modifies any difference directly associated with the step change from atmospheric to tank.  相似文献

Recent work on bryophyte diversity in lowland forests of northern South America has suggested the existence of a new type of cloud forest, the ‘tropical lowland cloud forest’ (LCF). LCF occurs in river valleys in hilly areas with high air humidity and morning fog, and is rich in epiphytes. We explored epiphyte abundance and canopy microclimate of LCF in a lowland area (200–400 m asl) near Saül, central French Guiana. We analyzed the vertical distribution of epiphytic cover and biomass on 48 trees, in LCF and in lowland rain forest (LRF) without fog. Trees in LCF had significantly more epiphytic biomass than in LRF; mean total epiphytic biomass in LCF was about 59 g/m2, and 35 g/m2 in LRF. In all height zones on the trees, total epiphyte cover in LCF exceeded that in LRF, with ca 70 percent mean cover in LCF and ca 15 percent in LRF. During both wet and dry seasons, mean diurnal relative air humidity (RH) was higher in LCF than in LRF, and persistence of high RH after sunrise significantly longer in LCF. We suggest that the prolonged availability of high air humidity in LCF and the additional input of liquid water through fog, enhance epiphyte growth in LCF by shortening the desiccation period and lengthening the period of photosynthetic activity of the plants.  相似文献

Abstract The regulation of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) under controlled environmental conditions has been investigated for two tropical epiphytes, relating plant water and carbon balance to growth form and habitat preference under natural conditions. Aechmea fendleri is restricted to wet, upper montane regions of Trinidad, while A. nudicaulis has a wider distribution extending into more arid regions of the island. Morphological characteristics of these plants are related to habitat preference in terms of leaf succulence (0.44 and 0.94 kg m?2 for the two species respectively) and a distinct layer of water storage parenchyma in A. nudicaulis In contrast, the thinner leaves of A. fendleri contain little water-storage parenchyma and less chlorenchyma per unit area, but the plants have a more open leaf rosette. The two species differ in expression of CAM, since the proportion of respiratory CO2 recycled as part of CAM had been found to be much lower in A. fendleri This study compared the efficiency of water use and role of respiratory CO2 recycling under two PAR regimes (300 and 120 μnol m?2 s?1) and three night temperatures (12, 18 and 25 °C). Dark CO2 uptake rates for both species were comparable to plants in the field (maximum of 2.3 ± 0.2 μmol m?2s?1± SD, n= 3). Total net CO2 uptake at night increased on leaf area basis with temperature for both species under higher PAR, although under the low PAR regime CO2 uptake was maximal at 18 °C. Water-use efficiency (WUE) increased at 18 °C and 25 °C during dark CO2 uptake (Phase I) and also during late afternoon photosynthesis (Phase IV) in both species. For A. fendleri, dawn to dusk changes in titrable acidity (ΔH +) were similar under high and low PAR, although ΔH+ was correlated to night temperature and PAR in A. nudicaulis. The proportion of ΔH+ derived from respiratory CO2 also varied with experimental conditions. Thus percentage recycling was lower in A. fendleri under high PAR (0–10%), but was only reduced at 18 °C under low PAR. Recycling by A. nudicaulis ranged from 32–42% under high PAR, but was also reduced to 6% under low PAR at 18 °C; at 12 °C and 25 °C, recycling was 37% and 52% respectively. Previous studies have suggested a relationship between the proportion of recycling and degree of water stress. This study indicated that CAM as a CO2 concentrating mechanism regulates both water-use efficiency and plant carbon balance in these epiphytes, in response to PAR and night temperature. However, the precise relationship between respiratory processes and the balance between external and internal sources of CO2 is as yet unresolved.  相似文献

The reproductive phenology and epiphytic macroalgae of Sargassum muticum were studied through an annual cycle (September 1987 to November 1988) at two sites on the northwestern coast of Baja California, Mexico, which were subjected to different degrees of wave exposure. Sargassum muticum is a brown alga of Japanese origin, now considered a permanent member of the marine flora of Baja California. A similar reproductive development was observed at both sites, with a maximum percentage of reproductive plants from May to July (spring–summer) and minimum from December to March (winter). Reproductive plants were found throughout the year. A total of 48 species of epiphytes were identified and seasonal variation in their diversity was observed. The greatest diversity was found at the more protected site.  相似文献

The role of littorinids in structuring communities is discussed. On hard substrates preferential grazing of the dominant algae often enables competitively inferior species to utilize the rock substrate. Investigations of these systems has led to the proposal of a number of factors that should be analyzed in order to assess the effect of herbivores on community structure. Some of these factors have been investigated for Littorina mariae Sacchi & Rastelli. L. mariae is a micro-epiphytic grazer browsing the surface covering of epiphytes off the alga Fucus serratus (L.). The relationship between the host alga, F. serratus, and L. mariae is far more intricate than that between winkles and hard substrates as the alga itself is a dynamic resource. L. mariae is spatially and temporally linked to F. serratus. L. mariae is found almost exclusively on the alga and is positively attracted by extracts of the alga. The life history of the winkle is closely synchronized with that of the alga (the winter decrease of L. mariae populations is associated with the seasonal die-back of the host alga). On analysis of the factors considered important to assess herbivory, and examples of the effects of other epiphytic herbivores on algal success, it is suggested that L. mariae could potentially play an important role in structuring the community of it's host fucoid and that this may influence larger scale community structure. Experimental manipulations are proposed to evaluate these hypotheses.  相似文献

The German biologist Julius Sachs was the first to introduce controlled, accurate, quantitative experimentation into the botanical sciences, and is regarded as the founder of modern plant physiology. His seminal monograph Experimental-Physiologie der Pflanzen (Experimental Physiology of Plants) was published 150 y ago (1865), when Sachs was employed as a lecturer at the Agricultural Academy in Poppelsdorf/Bonn (now part of the University). This book marks the beginning of a new era of basic and applied plant science. In this contribution, I summarize the achievements of Sachs and outline his lasting legacy. In addition, I show that Sachs was one of the first biologists who integrated bacteria, which he considered to be descendants of fungi, into the botanical sciences and discussed their interaction with land plants (degradation of wood etc.). This “plant-microbe-view” of green organisms was extended and elaborated by the laboratory botanist Wilhelm Pfeffer (1845–1920), so that the term “Sachs-Pfeffer-Principle of Experimental Plant Research” appears to be appropriate to characterize this novel way of performing scientific studies on green, photoautotrophic organisms (embryophytes, algae, cyanobacteria).  相似文献

The epiphyte vegetation of Annona glabra on Barro Colorado Island, Panama   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aim Information on the community composition, structure, and dynamics of epiphyte vegetation is scarce. A survey of the epiphytes occurring on all individuals of one particular host tree species in a well-studied neotropical research site allowed us a comparison of the epiphyte flora of this tree with the local epiphyte flora, the analysis of spatial distribution patterns and the use of these patterns as indications for changes in time. In the future, our results can be used as a baseline data-set for the direct observation of the long-term dynamics in epiphyte communities. Location The study was conducted on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama. Methods We recorded all individuals of the vascular epiphytes growing on Annona glabra L., a flood-tolerant, multiple-stemmed tree, which is restricted to the shoreline of BCI. Data on tree biometrics, epiphyte species, and epiphyte abundances were collected for more than 1200 trees. Results In total, we encountered almost 15,000 epiphytic individuals in sixty-eight species, corresponding to more than one third of the entire epiphyte flora of Barro Colorado Island. The component species differed strongly in abundance: the four most important species accounted for >75% of all individuals. In most cases, the same four species were also the first to colonize a tree (=phorophyte). Colonization patterns indicated no replacement of early colonizers by late arrivals. Species richness and epiphyte abundances showed a positive correlation with the size and the density of the host trees. All species showed a highly clumped distribution and the physiognomy of epiphyte communities of individual trees was dominated either by one or several of the four most common species or by a set of frequently co-occurring tank bromeliads. Other species were dominant only in exceptional cases. Most species were always rare. A distance effect on community composition was mostly confined to a local scale with an increased similarity in the species assemblage of stems of a tree v. neighbouring trees. Main conclusions The epiphytes on a single small phorophyte species may encompass a surprisingly large proportion of the local epiphyte flora. The observations that most tree crowns are inhabited by a single or only very few species, and that all epiphyte species show highly clumped distributions suggest a predominance of very local dispersal within a tree crown, which is only infrequently interrupted by successful long-distance dispersal between crowns.  相似文献

Plants that hyperaccumulate Ni contain > 1000 ppm (dry wt.) in their tissues. Variation of Ni content within hyperaccumulating plant species is poorly explored. Using the Ni-hyperaccumulating shrub Psychotria douarrei, we documented variation of leaf Ni levels within individual shrubs, and variation with respect to plant size and leaf age. Plant size did not correlate significantly with leaf Ni content, and leaf Ni content did not correlate significantly with soil Ni content. Older leaves contained twice as much Ni as younger leaves. Older leaves also contained greater concentrations of Ca, Fe, and Cr but less K, P, and Cu. Five elements (Zn, Pb, Co, Mn, Mg) showed no significant variation due to leaf age. We also examined the effect of leaf age on epiphyll cover, finding increased epiphyll cover on the upper surface of older leaves. The dominant leafy liverwort epiphyll had a relatively high Ni content (400 ppm), suggesting that epiphylls of Ni hyperaccumulators obtain some Ni from host leaves. Individual shrubs differed in mean leaf Ni content almost two-fold (14,900-27,700 ppm). Variation among branches within individuals also ranged widely; however, this intraplant variability was not strongly correlated with the mean leaf Ni content of an individual shrub. We concluded that Ni contents in leaves of P. douarrei vary considerably due to leaf age, among individual shrubs, and among branches within a shrub.  相似文献
