To examine the indirect effects of fishing on energy allocation in non-target prey species, condition and reproductive potential were measured for five representative species (two-spot red snapper Lutjanus bohar, arc-eye hawkfish Paracirrhites arcatus, blackbar devil Plectroglyphidodon dickii, bicolour chromis Chromis margaritifer and whitecheek surgeonfish Acanthurus nigricans) from three reef-fish communities with different levels of fishing and predator abundance in the northern Line Islands, central Pacific Ocean. Predator abundance differed by five to seven-fold among islands, and despite no clear differences in prey abundance, differences in prey condition and reproductive potential among islands were found. Body condition (mean body mass adjusted for length) was consistently lower at sites with higher predator abundance for three of the four prey species. Mean liver mass (adjusted for total body mass), an indicator of energy reserves, was also lower at sites with higher predator abundance for three of the prey species and the predator. Trends in reproductive potential were less clear. Mean gonad mass (adjusted for total body mass) was high where predator abundance was high for only one of the three species in which it was measured. Evidence of consistently low prey body condition and energy reserves in a diverse suite of species at reefs with high predator abundance suggests that fishing may indirectly affect non-target prey-fish populations through changes in predation and predation risk.  相似文献

The parameter values of a generic model of gastric evacuation were estimated from evacuation data on Atlantic cod Gadus morhua fed meals of four fish prey: herring Clupea harengus, sprat Sprattus sprattus, lesser sandeel Ammodytes tobianus and dab Limanda limanda. The effects on evacuation of photoperiod and pre-experimental treatment of prey were also tested. Freshly killed A. tobianus were evacuated from the stomach of G. morhua at a rate similar to the value estimated from conspecifics kept deep-frozen and subsequently thawed prior to the evacuation experiment. The evacuation rate in G. morhua exposed to continuous light did not differ from the rate obtained from fish maintained under a 12L:12D photoperiod. The evacuation rates estimated from the latter fish in the dark and light periods, respectively, were likewise similar. These results indicate that the resistance of prey to the digestive processes is not altered significantly by the pre-experimental treatment of prey and that there is no diurnal variation per se in the rate of evacuation for G. morhua. Therefore, it is believed that the present parameterization of the evacuation model should prove especially useful for studying the role of G. morhua as a top predator in natural systems.  相似文献

Inbreeding depression can reduce the performance of offspring produced by mating between relatives, with consequences for population dynamics and sexual-system evolution. In flowering plants, inbreeding depression commonly acts most intensely during seed development. This predispersal component is typically estimated by comparing seed production following exclusive self- and cross-pollination, but such estimates are unbiased only if seed production is limited by ovule availability, rather than by pollen receipt or seed-development resources. To overcome this problem, we propose experimental and statistical methods based on a model of ovule fertilization and seed development that accounts for differential fertilization by self- and cross-pollen, limited ovule viability or receptivity, differential survival of self- and cross-zygotes and limited resource availability. Simulations illustrate that the proposed methods eliminate bias in estimated predispersal inbreeding depression caused by pollen limitation and can improve estimates under resource limitation. Application of these methods to two orchid species further demonstrates their utility in identifying and estimating diverse influences on reproductive performance under typical conditions. Although our theoretical results raise questions about the reported intensity of predispersal inbreeding depression, our proposed methods guard against bias while also providing insight into plant reproduction.  相似文献

Understanding the paleoecology of extinct subfossil lemurs requires reconstruction of dietary preferences. Tooth morphology is strongly correlated with diet in living primates and is appropriate for inferring dietary ecology. Recently, dental topographic analysis has shown great promise in reconstructing diet from molar tooth form. Compared with traditionally used shearing metrics, dental topography is better suited for the extraordinary diversity of tooth form among subfossil lemurs and has been shown to be less sensitive to phylogenetic sources of shape variation. Specifically, we computed orientation patch counts rotated (OPCR) and Dirichlet normal energy (DNE) of molar teeth belonging to 14 species of subfossil lemurs and compared these values to those of an extant lemur sample. The two metrics succeeded in separating species in a manner that provides insights into both food processing and diet. We used them to examine the changes in lemur community ecology in Southern and Southwestern Madagascar that accompanied the extinction of giant lemurs. We show that the poverty of Madagascar's frugivore community is a long-standing phenomenon and that extinction of large-bodied lemurs in the South and Southwest resulted not merely in a loss of guild elements but also, most likely, in changes in the ecology of extant lemurs.  相似文献

J. Neurochem. (2012) 122, 1219-1229. ABSTRACT: The molecular mechanisms that lead to ischemic pre-conditioning are not completely understood, and proteins are important players. We compared the mouse brain cortex proteome from different ischemia sets: transient (7?min) middle cerebral artery occlusion (7'MCAo, pre-conditioning stimulus), permanent MCAo (pMCAo, severe ischemia), and pMCAo 4?days after 7'MCAo (7'MCAo/pMCAo, pre-conditioned model). Proteins were analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis coupled to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Overall, 28 proteins were expressed differentially from sham controls, and identified. The ischemic pre-conditioning stimulus alone up-regulated the stress protein heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70), possibly activated by the androgen receptor. Western blotting confirmed the increased expression of HSP70 and showed that androgen receptor expression paralleled that of HSP70. In the ischemic-tolerant group (7'MCAo/pMCAo), a number of proteins over-expressed after pMCAo returned to sham levels, seven proteins remained up-regulated as in pMCAo, and five proteins mainly involved in energy metabolism and mitochondrial electron transport and unchanged in pMCAo were down-regulated only in ischemic tolerance, suggesting a role in brain pre-conditioning. Astrocytes participated in ischemic-tolerance induction, as shown by the down-regulation of glutamine synthetase in the 7'MCAo/pMCAo group. The results suggest that metabolic down-regulation was a general feature of ischemic pre-conditioning, playing a pivotal role in neuroprotection.  相似文献

Three species of phytoplankton, Rhodomonas sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin, and Isochrysis galbana Parke, were cultivated in semicontinuous culture to analyze the response of carbon (C):nitrogen (N):phosphorus (P) stoichiometry to the interactive effect of five N:P supply ratios and four growth rates (dilution rates). The relationship between cellular N and P quotas and growth rates fits well to both the Droop and Ågren’s functions for all species. We observed excess uptake of both N and P in the three species. N:P biomass ratios showed a significant positive relationship with N:P supply ratios across the entire range of growth rates, and N:P biomass ratios converged to an intermediate value independent of N:P supply ratios at higher growth rates. The effect of growth rates on N:P biomass ratios was positive at lower N:P supply ratios, but negative at higher N:P supply ratios for both Rhodomonas sp. and I. galbana, while for P. tricornutum this effect was negative at all N:P supply ratios. A significant interactive effect of N:P supply ratios and growth rates on N:P biomass ratios was found in both Rhodomonas sp. and P. tricornutum, but not in I. galbana. Our results suggest that Ågren’s functions may explain the underlying biochemical principle for the Droop model. The parameters in the Droop and Ågren’s functions can be useful indications of algal succession in the phytoplankton community in changing oceans.  相似文献

Partitioning of the carbon (C) fixed during photosynthesis between neutral lipids (NL) and carbohydrates was investigated in Isochrysis sp. (Haptophyceae) in relation to its nitrogen (N) status. Using batch and nitrate‐limited continuous cultures, we studied the response of these energy reserve pools to both conditions of N starvation and limitation. During N starvation, NL and carbohydrate quotas increased but their specific growth rates (specific rates of variation, μCAR and μNL) decreased. When cells were successively deprived and then resupplied with NO3, both carbohydrates and neutral lipids were inversely related to the N quota (N:C). These negative relationships were not identical during N impoverishment and replenishment, indicating a hysteresis phenomenon between N and C reserve mobilizations. Cells acclimated to increasing degrees of N limitation in steady‐state chemostat cultures showed decreasing NL quota and increasing carbohydrate quota. N starvation led to a visible but only transient increase of NL productivity. In continuous cultures, the highest NL productivity was obtained for the highest experimented dilution rate (D = 1.0 d?1; i.e., for non N‐limited growth conditions), whereas the highest carbohydrate productivity was obtained at D = 0.67 d?1. We used these results to discuss the nitrogen conditions that optimize NL productivities in the context of biofuel production.  相似文献

Nest-site availability limits cavity-using populations in many harvested forests; however, little is known about the extent of nest-site limitation in mature forests with a full complement of excavator species and intact processes of cavity creation and loss. To examine the role of nest-site availability in limiting cavity-using populations in mature mixed conifer forests in central British Columbia, Canada, we conducted an 11-year before-after control-impact experiment in which we increased nest-site availability via nest box addition. Our 7 sites (3 treatments, 4 controls) had low cavity densities (<2/ha) prior to treatment and cavity occupation rates were also low (<10%/yr), which is a relationship often cited in the literature as evidence of non-limitation in cavity-nesting populations. Following nest box addition at our treatment sites, which tripled the availability of cavities, total density of bird and mammal nests more than tripled. Density of mountain chickadee (Poecile gambeli) nests increased 9-fold on treatment sites and returned to pre-treatment levels following box removal, suggesting that chickadee populations were limited by cavity availability at our study sites. Density of red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) nests and roosts also increased significantly at treatment sites following box addition and declined following box removal. We noted little change in chickadee or squirrel nest density at control sites monitored concurrently. Squirrels preferred large-sized over small-sized boxes, and significantly enlarged the entrance areas of small boxes by chewing, suggesting that there may have been a shortage of suitable nest and roost sites for them in our study area. We contend that low cavity occupancy rates may not accurately reflect nest-site availability for cavity nesters in mature forests, and that cavity size may influence the true availability of cavities on the landscape. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

With upcoming global wind-energy build-out estimated in millions of units, cumulative environmental impacts must be considered and understood to promote responsible expansion of this renewable energy source. In June 2009, 30 wildlife scientists convened in Racine, Wisconsin, USA to identify key research priorities concerning wind energy's potential impacts on migratory wildlife (birds and bats). This working group suggested 4 areas where improved science is most needed to evaluate the impacts of wind-energy development on migrating animals more accurately than can be accomplished today: 1) standardized protocols and definitions; 2) new methods and models for assessing and forecasting risk; 3) documenting lethal and sub-lethal effects at existing wind facilities; and 4) improved facility-site access, data access, and data management for researchers. Focused research based on these priorities will both quantify potential risks associated with wind-energy development and help derive science-based, peer-reviewed, best-management practices for existing and future wind projects. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献
