To investigate the role mitochondrial membrane lipids play in the actions of CR (calorie restriction), C57BL/6 mice were assigned to four groups (control and three 40% CR groups) and the CR groups were fed diets containing soya bean oil (also in the control diet), fish oil or lard. The fatty acid composition of the major mitochondrial phospholipid classes, proton leak and H2O2 production were measured in liver mitochondria following 1 month of CR. The results indicate that mitochondrial phospholipid fatty acids reflect the PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid) profile of the dietary lipid sources. CR significantly decreased the capacity of ROS (reactive oxygen species) production by Complex III but did not markedly alter proton leak and ETC (electron transport chain) enzyme activities. Within the CR regimens, the CR-fish group had decreased ROS production by both Complexes I and III, and increased proton leak when compared with the other CR groups. The CR-lard group showed the lowest proton leak compared with the other CR groups. The ETC enzyme activity measurements in the CR regimens showed that Complex I activity was decreased in both the CR-fish and CR-lard groups. Moreover, the CR-fish group also had lower Complex II activity compared with the other CR groups. These results indicate that dietary lipid composition does influence liver mitochondrial phospholipid composition, ROS production, proton leak and ETC enzyme activities in CR animals. 相似文献

Renewable energy (RE) technologies are looked upon favorably to provide for future energy demands and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the installation of these technologies requires large quantities of finite material resources. We apply life cycle assessment to 100 years of electricity generation from three stand‐alone RE technologies—solar photovoltaics, run‐of‐river hydro, and wind—to evaluate environmental burden profiles against baseline electricity generation from fossil fuels. We then devised scenarios to incorporate circular economy (CE) improvements targeting hotspots in systems’ life cycle, specifically (1) improved recycling rates for raw materials and (ii) the application of eco‐design. Hydro presented the lowest environmental burdens per kilowatt‐hour of electricity generation compared with other RE technologies, owing to its higher efficiency and longer life spans for main components. Distinct results were observed in the environmental performance of each system based on the consideration of improved recycling rates and eco‐design. CE measures produced similar modest savings in already low GHG emissions burdens for each technology, while eco‐design specifically had the potential to provide significant savings in abiotic resource depletion. Further research to explore the full potential of CE measures for RE technologies will curtail the resource intensity of RE technologies required to mitigate climate change. 相似文献

Leaf mass per unit area (LMA), carbon and nitrogen contents, leaf construction cost, and photosynthetic capacity (P
max) of Adiantum reniforme var. sinensis, an endangered fern endemic to the Three Gorges region in southwest China, were compared in five populations differing in
habitat such as soil moisture and irradiance. The low soil moisture and high irradiance habitat population exhibited significantly
higher LMA, area-based leaf construction (CCA), and carbon content (CA), but lower leaf nitrogen content per unit dry mass (NM) than the other habitat populations. The high soil moisture and low irradiance habitat populations had the lowest CCA, but their cost/benefic ratios of CCA/P
max were similar to the medium soil moisture and irradiance habitat population due to their lower leaf P
max. Hence A. reniforme var. sinensis prefers partially shaded, moist but well-drained, slope habitats. Due to human activities, however, its main habitats now
are cliffs or steeply sloped bare rocks with poor and thin soil. The relatively high energy requirements and low photosynthetic
capacity in these habitats could limit the capability of the species in extending population or interspecific competition

Goal, Scope and Background Traditionally, comparative life cycle assessments (LCA) have not considered rebound effects, for instance in case of significant
price differences among the compared products. No justifications have been made for this delimitation in scope. This article
shows that price differences and the consequent effects of marginal consumer expenditure may influence the conclusions of
comparative LCA significantly. We also show that considerations about rebound effects of price differences can be included
in LCAs.
Methods The direct rebound effect of a price difference is marginal consumption. Based on statistical data on private consumption
in different income groups (Statistics Denmark 2005a, 2005b), the present article provides an estimate of how an average Danish
household will spend an additional 1 DKK for further consumer goods, when the household has gained money from choosing a cheaper
product alternative. The approach is to use marginal income changes and the following changes in consumption patterns as an
expression for marginal consumption. Secondly, the environmental impact potentials related to this marginal consumption are
estimated by the use of environmental impact intensity data from an IO-LCA database (Weidema et al. 2005). Finally, it is
discussed whether, and in which ways the conclusions of comparative LCAs can be affected by including the price difference
between product alternatives. This is elucidated in a case study of a comparative LCA screening of two different kinds of
Danish cheese products (Fricke et al. 2004).
Results Car purchase and driving, use and maintenance of dwelling, clothing purchase and insurance constitutes the largest percentages
of the marginal consumption. In a case study of two cheeses, the including the impact potentials related to the price difference
results in significant changes in the total impact potentials. Considering the relatively small price difference of the two
products, it is likely also to have a significant influence on the results of comparative LCAs more generally.
Discussion The influence of marginal consumption in comparative LCAs is relevant to consider in situations with large differences in
the price of the product alternatives being compared, and in situations with minor differences in the impact potentials related
to the alternatives. However, different uncertainties are linked to determining the pattern for marginal consumption and the
environmental impact potential related to this. These are first of all related to the method used, but also include inaccurate
data of consumption in households, aggregation and weighting of income groups, aggregation of product groups, estimation and
size of the price difference, and the general applicability of the results.
Conclusion Incorporating marginal consumption in consequential LCAs is possible in practice. In the case study used, including the rebound
effects of the price difference has a significant influence on the result of the comparative LCA, as the result for the impact
categories acidification and nutrient enrichment changes in favour of the expensive product.
Recommendations and Perspectives It is recommended that the rebound effects of price differences should be included more frequently in LCAs. In order to ensure
this, further research in marginal consumption and investment patterns and IO data for different countries or regions is required.
Furthermore, this study does not consider the economic distributional consequences of buying an expensive product instead
of a cheaper product (e.g. related to how the profit is spent by those who provided the product). It should also be noted,
that more expensive products not necessarily result in less consumption, as those who provided the product also will spend
the money they have earned from the sale. Ideally, these consequences should also be further investigated. Likewise, the development
of databases to include marginal consumption in PC-tools is needed. In general, considerations of marginal consumption would
favour expensive product alternatives, depending, however, on the type of consumer.

This paper gives a quantitative analysis on the non-CO2 emissions related to energy demand, energy activities and land use change of six scenarios with different development pattern in 2030 and 2050 based on IPAC emission model. The various mitigation technologies and policies are assessed to understand the corresponding non-CO2 emission reduction effect. The research shows that the future non-CO2 emissions of China will grow along with increasing energy demand, in which thermal power and transportation will be the major emission and mitigation sectors. During the cause of future social and economic development, the control and mitigation of non-CO2 emissions is a problem as challenging and pressing as that of CO2 emissions.This study indicates that the energy efficiency improvement, renewable energy, advanced nuclear power generation, fuel cell, coal-fired combined cycle, clean coal and motor vehicle emission control technologies will contribute to non-CO2 emissions control and mitigation. 相似文献

Lemur catta's ability to consume a wide variety of plant foods is a key to this species' survival in a time of ecological crisis across its geographic range. We examined seasonal diet variability of L. catta groups inhabiting two rocky outcrop fragments in south‐central Madagascar: Anja Reserve and Tsaranoro Valley forest. Leaves and fruit of Melia azedarach were a keystone resource for Anja lemurs in wet and dry seasons. At Tsaranoro, L. catta relied on M. azedarach and Ficus spp. in dry season, but during the wet season, neither was a dominant food resource. Top food species at both sites differed markedly from those consumed by L. catta in other habitats. At Tsaranoro, a greater proportion of lemurs engaged in feeding during the dry season compared with wet season. We attribute this to resource scarcity during dry season, when greater feeding effort is needed to maintain energy requirements. Because M. azedarach is ubiquitous throughout Anja Reserve, producing fruit and leaves year‐round, Anja lemurs can meet energy requirements with little seasonal adjustment in feeding activity. L. catta's IUCN status has been upgraded to Endangered, thus, greater insight into its diet flexibility and ability to survive on introduced plant species, can inform conservation plans in remaining wild habitats and ex situ programs. 相似文献

根据20072008年在南海北部(107°00'120°00'E、17°00'23°30'N)进行的海洋生态综合调查数据,应用Ecopath with Ecosim软件构建了南海北部生态系统的生态通道模型,并通过模型分析了南海北部海洋生态系统的食物网结构、能量流动和系统的总体特征,并简要总结过度捕捞生态系统的基本特征。结果表明,南海北部海洋生态系统以捕食食物链为主要能流通道,初级生产者是系统能量的主要来源。各功能群的营养级范围为13.99,哺乳动物占据了最高的营养层,平均渔获物营养级为2.93。利用生态网络分析,系统的能量流动主要有6级,来自初级生产者的能流效率为12.6%,来自碎屑的转换效率为10.4%,平均能量转换效率为11.5%。系统连接指数(Connectance Index,CI)和系统杂食指数(System Omnivory Index,SOI)分别为0.290和0.239;Finn’s循环指数(Finn’scy cling index,FCI)和系统平均路径长度(Finn’s mean path length,MPL)分别为4.380和2.476;总初级生产力/总呼吸为2.596,综合研究表明当前南海北部海洋生态系统处于不成熟阶段。 相似文献
