The chronic toxicity of silver and endosulfan to the opossum shrimpMysidopsis bahia was determined using continuous-flow bioassays. The 28-day bioassays measured survival, fecundity, and growth (length and weight measurements). Maximum acceptable toxicant concentrations (MATC) were estimated from measured toxicant concentrations. MATC values were similar using either brood size or growth as a criterion for sublethal effects. As an alternative to the determination of fecundity impairment, measurement of growth reduction in response to exposure to toxicants may provide a useful tool in the assessment of chronic toxicity inMysidopsis life-cycle bioassays.  相似文献

Plants of the nickel-hyperaccumulator Alyssum bertolonii Desv. and of the non-accumulator A. montanum L. growing on a serpentine site in Tuscany, Italy, and plants of A. montanum from a nearby non-serpentine site were analysed for metal concentration and localisation. The leaves of A. bertolonii contained 160 times more nickel than those of A. montanum from the same site, thus demonstrating its hyperaccumulation capacity towards this metal. On the other hand, both species showed an inversion of the Ca/Mg ratio in their organs relative to the soil. Nickel localisation in plant tissues was examined by Scanning Electron Microanalysis (SEM/EDX). In A. bertolonii, a specific pattern of nickel distribution was detected, with the highest concentrations present in parenchyma and sclerenchyma cells for the roots; in the shoots, the highest amounts of nickel were found in the stem epidermis, the leaf epidermal surface, and the leaf trichome base. This particular nickel tissue distribution pattern was not found in the non-accumulator A. montanum growing on serpentine soil. Other mineral nutrients, namely Mg, Ca, K, Fe, instead, had a similar distribution in the two species. The A. montanum plants from the non-serpentine site had very low nickel levels in their tissues, and these were of the same magnitude as those found in A. bertolonii plants grown in a greenhouse on commercial horticultural soil with low nickel concentration. In A. bertolonii plants, the tissue-specific allocation patterns appeared to depend on the degree of nickel hyperaccumulation, which is, in turn, directly linked to the soil characteristics.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient in living organisms, having a narrow margin between essential and potentially toxic intake/exposure. Thus, the biochemistry of Se in living organisms must be studied in-depth to determine the underlying mechanism of Se cytotoxicity. In this study, we report the emergence of selenium nanovirus (SeNVs) in selenite-exposed fish (freshwater and saltwater) and plants (dryland) and its toxicity in them. SeNVs were found in both the abdomen and tail of Oryzias melastigma and saltwater Rhodeus ocellatus, which led to their death. The occurrence of the intracellular assembly of SeNVs was observed in the roots and leaves of corn Zea mays, but not in those of Limnobium laevigatum. SeNVs led to the death of Z. mays but caused chronic toxicity in L. laevigatum. SeNVs should be a system or structure that dissipates the intracellular redox gradients of the host cells, with simple information consisting Se–O, Se–N, or Se–S bond, that would ensure elemental Se ligand binding with nearly specific biomolecules in host cells, thereby maintaining their composition and stabilizing their structure. The multiple toxic effects of Se, therefore, could be the consequence of increase of entropy in the host cells caused by the intracellular assembly of SeNVs. This study may provide an insight into the underlying mechanism of Se in environmental toxicology and its applications in human health.  相似文献

This review focuses on four new product categories of food supplements: pre-workout, fat burner/thermogenic, brain/cognitive booster, and hormone/testosterone booster. Many food supplements have been shown to be contaminated with unauthorized substances. In some cases, the ingredients in the new categories of dietary supplements were medicinal products or new synthetic compounds added without performing clinical trials. Some of the new ingredients in dietary supplements are plant materials that are registered in the pharmacopoeia as herbal medicines. In other cases, dietary supplements may contain plant materials that have no history of human use and are often used as materials to ‘camouflage’ stimulants. In the European Union, new ingredients of dietary supplements, according to European Food Safety Authority or unauthorized novel food. Furthermore, selected ingredients in dietary supplements may be prohibited in sports and are recognized as doping agents by World Anti-Doping Agency.  相似文献

Histcchemical and chemical evidence indicates that formaldehyde combines with unsaturated lipids at the double bond. The resulting complex contains a free carbonyl group which probably originates from the formaldehyde. The reaction occurs over a wide pH range, and takes place in the absence of oxygen or moisture. The reaction product is visualized by the Schiff reagent, and by the Ashbel-Seligman procedure. In the plasmal procedure, when performed on formalin-treated material, the reaction has the same significance as the pseudo-plasmal reaction, i.e. it denotes the presence of double bonds. The Ashbel-Seligman technic seems to be more sensitive to this complex than the Schiff reagent and shows it more markedly than it does the true plasmals and the atmospherically oxidized unsaturated compounds.  相似文献

Four Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes, [Ru(bpy)2(7-NO2-dppz)]2+, [Ru(bpy)2(7-CH3-dppz)]2+, [Ru(phen)2(7-NO2-dppz)]2+, and [Ru(phen)2(7-CH3-dppz)]2+ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), (7-Nitro-dppz = 7-Nitro dipyrido[3,2-a:2′-3′-c]phenazine, 7-CH3-dppz = 7-Methyl dipyrido[3,2-a:2′-3′-c]phenazine), have been synthesized and characterized by IR, UV, elemental analysis, 1H NMR, 13C-NMR, and mass spectroscopy. The DNA-binding properties of the four complexes were investigated by spectroscopic and viscosity measurements. The results suggest that all four complexes bind to DNA via an intercalative mode. Under irradiation at 365 nm, all four complexes were found to promote the photocleavage of plasmid pBR 322 DNA. Toxicological effects of the selected complexes were performed on industrially important yeasts (eukaryotic microorganisms).  相似文献

The inhibitory effects on esterases and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in the freshwater rotifer Euchlanis dilatata, native to Mexico, were assessed by fluorimetry after in vivo exposure (30?min) in laboratory conditions to sublethal concentrations of metals and pesticides. EC50 values for esterases ranged from 7.9?×?10?7 for DDT to 61.9 μg l?1 for methyl parathion, while corresponding values for PLA2 ranged from 0.96?×?10?6 for mercury to 69.2 μg l?1 for lead. These enzyme systems in E. dilatata are very sensitive to the tested agents and suggest they would be suitable biomarkers. However, sensitivity to other environmental contaminants should be investigated in laboratory conditions and field studies to assess their potential as environmental biomarkers.  相似文献

Summary

The impacts of larvicides used in the control of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) on macroinvertebrates in the stones-in-current biotope were assessed during 8 field trials in the middle Orange River, South Africa. Two Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (B.t.i.) products (VectobacR 12AS and TeknarR HP-D) and the organophosphate temephos (AbateR 200EC) were applied at recommended and high dosages to simulate “operational” and “worst-possible” scenario's respectively. Mortality was evaluated either by direct counting of invertebrates on stones before and after application, or by ranking invertebrates on a 4-point relative abundance scale before and after application. In addition, the re-appearance of benthic invertebrate population densities after temephos application was examined.

At the recommended dosage (1.2 ppm/10 min), B.t.i. significantly reduced blackfly larval numbers (P<0.001) and those of the chironomid Rheotanytarsus fuscus Freeman (P<0.05). At high dosage (20 ppm/10 min), numbers of the filter-feeding mayfly Tricorythus discolor (Burmeister) (P<0.01) and the chironomid Cardiocladius sp. (P<0.05) were also significantly reduced. No Simulium predators were directly affected by B.t.i., but there were indications of food shortage amongst Hydropsychidae and Hirudinea.

Temephos caused significant reductions in the relative abundance of 5 taxa at 0.05 ppm, 3 to 6 taxa at 0.1 ppm, and 9 taxa at 1.0 ppm (P<0.05). “Non-target” organisms which were most affected included the chironomid R. fuscus, the mayflies Baetis glaucus Agnew and Choroterpes elegans Barnard, and the caddisflies Cheumatopsyche thomasseti Ulmer and Amphipsyche scottae Kimmins. The mayfly T. discolor was tolerant of temephos, even at high dosage (1.0 ppm/10 min). In winter, most taxa re-appeared within 19 days, and population densities were back to pre-treatment levels within 35 days.

It is concluded that good reduction of blackfly populations may be obtained with minimal direct impact on the “non-target” fauna, provided recommended dosages of temephos are not exceeded. Overdosing with temephos may result in high mortality of “non-target” organisms, including blackfly predators, and should be avoided.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Potent second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides such as brodifacoum have been used as more effective alternatives to first-generation anticoagulants, such as warfarin. A combination of diphacinone at 0.005% and cholecalciferol at 0.06% produces a slow-acting bait that is effective at killing possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and rodents. Cage trials with groups of possums and ship rats (Rattus rattus) achieved a mortality of 87% and 86% for possums and ship rats, respectively. Two field trials, each 200 hectares in size, targeting possums, ship rats and mice achieved an average reduction in the abundance of 94% for possums, 94% for ship rats and 80% for mice. The combination of diphacinone and cholecalciferol appears effective and has a favourable risk profile compared with second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, such as brodifacoum. Approval of this new bait by the New Zealand Environmental Protection Agency was granted in 2018 and final registration obtained from the Ministry of Primary Industries in 2019.  相似文献

In the present study, coupled stable sulfur and oxygen isotope fractionation during elemental sulfur disproportionation according to the overall reaction: 4H2O + 4S? → 3H2S + SO4 2 ? + 2H+, was experimentally investigated for the first time using a pure culture of the sulfate reducer Desulfobulbus propionicus at 35?C. Bacterial disproportionation of elemental sulfur is an important process in the sulfur cycle of natural surface sediments and leads to the simultaneous formation of sulfide and sulfate. A dual-isotope approach considering both sulfur and oxygen isotope discrimination has been shown to be most effective in evaluating specific microbial reactions. The influence of iron- and manganese bearing-solids (Fe(II)CO3, Fe(III)OOH, Mn(IV)O2) acting in natural sediments as scavengers for hydrogen sulfide, was considered, too. Disproportionation of elemental sulfur was observed in the presence of iron solids at a cell-specific sulfur disproportionation rate of about 10? 9.5± 0.4 μ mol S? cell? 1 h? 1. No disproportionation, however, was observed with MnO2. In the presence of iron solids, newly formed sulfate was enriched in 18 O compared to water by about +21‰ (≡ ? H2O ), in agreement with a suggested oxygen isotope exchange via traces of intra- or extracellular sulfite that is formed as a disproportionation intermediate. Dissolved sulfate was also enriched in 34S compared to elemental sulfur by up to +35%. Isotope fractionation by Desulfobulbus propionicusis highest for all disproportionating bacteria investigated, so far, and may impact on the development of isotope signals at the redox boundary of surface sediments.  相似文献
