Roads and associated traffic have significant impacts on wildlife, from direct mortality caused by vehicle collisions to indirect effects when wildlife avoid roads, restricting access to important resources. Road mitigation measures such as constructing wildlife passages over or under the road with directional fencing have proven effective at reducing wildlife vehicle collisions while also enabling wildlife to safely cross the road. Highway mitigation projects are led by transportation agencies with a primary purpose of improving motorist safety. More recently, through the discipline of road ecology, considerations have included safe wildlife passage through transportation corridors. To prioritize road sections for mitigation, data sources include animal vehicle collision data collected by transportation agencies and connectivity models generated by wildlife professionals. We used a third data source, pronghorn observations collected by citizen scientists, and demonstrated its value to prioritize potential wildlife mitigation sites. Our results clearly demonstrate a misalignment of road mitigation sites using animal-vehicle collision data and those of rarer species of interest. 相似文献

This paper is the first detailed analysis of situation-specific temporal patterning of electric organ discharges (EODs) in a strong electric fish. Using a resident-intruder paradigm EODs were recorded during interactions between dyads composed of Malapterurus electricus (Gmelin) and four different types of fish: (1) conspecifics; (2) large prey-type mid-water fish, goldfish ( Carassius auratus , Linnaeus 1758) and tilapia ( Oreochromis melanotheron , Rüppel, 1852); (3) a sympatric competitor, Polypterus palmas (Ayres 1850) and (4) a larger, threatening catfish, Clarias sp.

An attempt at demonstrating lateral power transmission over millimeter distances along a coupling membrane has been undertaken. Trichomes of the multicellular filamentous cyanobacteria Phormidium uncinatum were illuminated with a very narrow light beam forming a light spot that covered only 4–5% of a 1–2 mm long cyanobacterial trichome. Such illumination was found to support motility (gliding along agar surface) of the trichome under conditions when the light was the only energy source. It was also shown that illumination with the light spot caused rotation of rings of slime (accompanying the operation of the ‘motors’ responsible for the motility of cyanobacteria) not only in the illuminated, but also in the distal, nonilluminated part of the trichome. Electric potential transmission along trichomes was revealed by means of the extracellular electrode technique. The light spot was found to induce generation of an electric potential difference between two electrodes in the dark region of the trichomes, which were placed at different distances from the illuminated end. Cutting the trichomes between the light spot and the closest ‘dark’ electrode abolished this effect. Valinomycin + K+ and carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone affected the potential difference formation between two ‘dark’ electrodes much stronger than that between a light and a dark electrode. All the light spot-induced effects develop in the seconds time scale. Both the amplitudes and the kinetics of the potential difference measured with four electrodes placed along the trichome prove to be in good agreement with the theoretical curves computed on the basis of the electric cable equation. It is concluded that transcellular power transmission in the form of Δψ takes place along trichomes of cyanobacteria. The effects of pulsed electric fields on cell membranes were investigated. In vitro exposure of mouse splenocytes to a single high-voltage pulse resulted in an increase in membrane permeability that was dependent on both the electric field strength and the pulse duration. Exposure to a 2 μs, 3.0 kV/cm pulse resulted in the induction of a 1.26 V transmembrane potential, and elicited a 50% loss of intracellular K+. These results are in agreement with previous studies of the effects of pulsed electric fields on erythrocytes and microorganisms. The effect of pulsed electric fields on the functional integrity of lymphocytes was i vestigated by measuring [3H]thymidine incorporation by cells cultured in the presence and absence of various mitogens following exposure to an electrical pulse. No statistically significant effects on the response of mouse spleen lymphocytes to concanavalin A, phytohemagglutinin or lipopolysaccharide were observed following exposure to 2 μs electric pulses at amplitudes of up to 3.5 kV/cm. Exposure to a single 10 μs pulse of 2.4–3.5 kV/cm produced a statistically significant reduction in the response of lymphocytes to lipopolysaccharide stimulation that was attributed to cell death. 相似文献

One monoclonal antibody, 3G4, was found to bind to an epitope involving terminal polysialic acids. Extensive digestion of the channel by the exosialidase, neuraminidase, or partial polysialic acid removal bythe endosialidase, endo-N-acetylneuraminidase, destroy the 3G4 epitope, 3G4 is, therefore, a highly selective probe for the post-translationally attached polysialic acids. Except for this monoclonal antibody, the epitopes recognized by the remaining antibodies were highly resistant to extensive N-linked deglycosylation. Thus, the monoclonal antibodies may be directed against unique post-translationally produced domains of the electroplax sodium channel, presumably sugar groups that are abundant on this protein (Miller, J.A., Agnew, W.S., Levinson, S.R. 1983.Biochemistry

The presynaptic muscarinic autoreceptor of Torpedo marmorata electric organ has been characterised by radioligand binding studies using the subtype-selective antagonists pirenzepine, (+)-telenzepine, methoctramine, and AF-DX 116. The presynaptic receptor had relatively high affinity for the M1 antagonists pirenzepine and (+)-telenzepine (Ki = 35 and 7 nM, respectively) and lower affinities for the M2 antagonists AF-DX 116 and methoctramine (Ki = 311 and 277 nM, respectively). Comparison of these binding data with those from an M2 receptor (rat heart membranes) assayed under identical conditions and with data in the recent literature suggests that the Torpedo muscarinic autoreceptor has a pharmacology most similar to the M1 pharmacological subtype of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. 相似文献
