(1) The eastern spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana, Clem.) is a native irruptive forest pest that defoliates spruce-fir forests throughout North America's boreal zone. (2) Past studies suggest that successful spruce budworm population control requires high natural mortality from a variety of sources, including predators, especially from parasitoids and birds. While well represented in many different ecosystems, the role of generalist predatory spiders in these boreal systems remains largely unstudied. (3) To determine the identity and percentage of spiders preying upon spruce budworm, we hand-collected spiders from balsam fir (Abies balsamea) in stands with relatively high spruce budworm densities from forests in insular Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. (4) Using a spruce budworm-specific TaqMan real-time PCR assay, we successfully amplified spruce budworm DNA in 32% of collected spiders. After spider molecular barcoding, we found the web builders Grammonota angusta Dondale, Pityohyphantes (aff. subarcticus), Dictyna brevitarsa Emerton and Estrandia grandaeva (Keyserling) represented 58% of the spiders feeding on spruce budworm, and the wandering hunter Philodromus rufus Dondale represented 11.8%. Effects of ambient UV-B radiation on soybean crops: Impact on leaf herbivory by Anticarsia gemmatalis 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Replicated field experiments with large plastic filters were carried outin Buenos Aires (Argentina, 34° S) to study the impacts of current levelsofsolar UV-B radiation ( 315 ) on soybean(Glycine max L.) crops and their interactions with chewinginsects, in particular the soybean worm Anticarsiagemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Solar(near-ambient)UV-B induced changes in the leaves that reduced their attractiveness toA. gemmatalis larvae in laboratory choicebioassays. When the A. gemmatalis larvae were forced toconsume leaves from field plots that received solar UV-B, they grew slightlyless rapidly and suffered more mortality than their counterparts fed withleavesfrom plots covered with polyester films that excluded the UV-B component ofsunlight. Exposure of the larvae themselves to ambient UV-B under a soybeancanopy during the feeding trials did not lower their life expectancy. At thewhole canopy level, we found that solar UV-B exclusion resulted in a two-foldincrease in the number of leaf lesions inflicted by various species of chewinginsects that naturally invaded the field plots. Leaves from canopies exposed tosolar UV-B showed significantly higher levels of soluble phenolics and lowerlevels of lignin than leaves that developed in canopies covered by polyesterfilms. No differences in specific leaf mass, leaf nitrogen or hemicellulosecontent were detected between the control and the solar-UV-B exclusiontreatments. Ophiocordyceps sinensis, an entomopathogenic fungus of the Tibetan Plateau is one of the most valuable traditional Chinese medicines. A fungal pathogen of O. sinensis, Polycephalomyces sp. GIMCC 3.570 (isolate 2010A-0818) was characterized by morphology, related to sequences of six genes (SSU, ITS, LSU, TEF1-α, RPB1 and ATP6) found in a BLAST search and five genes (SSU, LSU, TEF1, RPB1 and RPB2) by phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. The results strongly support placement of P. sp. GIMCC 3.570 in the genus Polycephalomyces. To determine the influence of P. sp. GIMCC 3.570 on the reproduction of its host, 30 artificially infected O. sinensis samples were compared with 30 uninfected controls. In the infected fungus, the life span of the stroma was significantly shorter and significantly fewer ascospores were produced compared with uninfected O. sinensis (p < 0.01). 相似文献

Ophiocordyceps sinensis, one of the most important income sources of rural Tibetan families, is an entomopathogenic fungus that parasitizes the ghost moth Thitarodes larvae, which live in alpine meadows on the Tibetan Plateau and in the Himalayas. The annual yield of O. sinensis has gradually declined in recent years. However, there is no effective method to sustain or increase the yield of O. sinensis artificially because the life cycle of the O. sinensis anamorph remains unclear. Here we detected O. sinensis in alpine plant roots by nested-touchdown polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Forty-two alpine plant species were screened. The roots from 23 alpine plant species (54.76 %) tested positive including 13 families and 18 genera. The detection results indicate that O. sinensis is present in the plant roots during the anamorph life cycle, to deal with harsh conditions in alpine habitats and have an increased opportunity to infect the larvae. The finding provides new information regarding the biology and ecology of O. sinensis that may be used to sustain this valuable resource. 相似文献

The role of antennae and maxillary palps in mediating food preferences by Manduca sexta (Johan.) (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) was examined. Fifth‐instar larvae, having different chemosensory organs remaining after microsurgery, were tested in two‐choice feeding assays using three solanaceous host species Lycopersicon esculentum (Mill.), Datura innoxia (Mill.), and Solanum pseudocapsicum (L.), an acceptable non‐host Raphanus sativus (L.) (Cruciferae), and an unacceptable non‐host Pelargonium hortorum (L.H. Bailey) (Geraniaceae). Larvae had a choice between leaf discs of two plant species or between one species and moist filter paper discs (water). The antennae are fully competent in mediating normal (unimpaired) food preferences for S. pseudocapsicum vs. water and P. hortorum vs. water. Thus, the antennae alone can mediate both acceptance and rejection behaviour. The latter is the first report of such a function in M. sexta. The antennae are partly competent (reduced preference) for S. pseudocapsicum vs. P. hortorum. No antennal competence could be demonstrated using the other plant species tested. The antennae alone are either partly needed (R. sativus vs. water) or not necessary to elicit normal food preferences for the plant species tested. The maxillary palps are fully competent in mediating normal food preference for S. pseudocapsicum vs. water, and D. innoxia vs. water. The palps are partly competent for S. pseudocapsicum vs. P. hortorum and incompetent for the other plant species tested. Thus, the maxillary palps alone could only mediate acceptance behaviour in this study. The need of the maxillary palps in normal food preferences could not be demonstrated. Interestingly, the maxillary palps alone can mediate food preferences for two normally rejected plants, R. sativus and P. hortorum. Similar results are reported for two other non‐host plant species, Vigna unguiculata (Walp.) (Leguminosae) and Vinca rosea (L.) (Apocynaceae). Perhaps, the maxillary palps inform M. sexta mostly about feeding stimulatory chemicals common to most plant species. 相似文献

Variability in thermal responses among Furia gastropachae isolates from different geographic origins
The effect of temperature ranging from 5-30 degrees C on in vitro vegetative growth and conidial germination of isolates of the entomophthoralean fungus Furia gastropachae was investigated. Eleven isolates were used for growth studies; two from Maryland, six from New York, and three from Ontario. A subset of four isolates, one each from Maryland and New York and two from Ontario, were used in conidial germination experiments. Growth and germination were significantly associated with temperature for all isolates, occurring throughout the range 5-30 degrees C, though both processes were inhibited to varying degrees at upper and lower extremes. Temperature optima for growth ranged from 20 to 27 degrees C, and for germination from 20 to 25 degrees C. Although significant variability was observed among isolates in growth at temperatures above 13 degrees C, temperature optima were not significantly different among isolates, and variability did not appear to relate to the geoclimatic origins of the isolates. In contrast, germination responses to temperature did appear to be related to geographic origin. Furia gastropachae isolates from New York and Maryland germinated more slowly at 10 degrees C than did Ontario isolates, although the percentage of conidia ultimately germinating at each temperature was the same for all isolates. The New York and Maryland isolates performed much better at 30 degrees C, with significantly greater overall germination and secondary conidial discharge, than the Ontario isolates. Compared with other isolates at 30 degrees C, Ontario isolates were the least active, often failing to successfully discharge any secondary conidia. 相似文献
