Among diplopods with desert populations, only three species of Spirostreptida have been studied in an ecological context. The present review compares regional environments, life-history patterns, and uses of habitat by Orlhoporus ornatus (Girard) from southwestern North America, Archispirostreptus tumuliporus judaicus (Attems) from the eastern Mediterranean seaboard, and Harpagophora nigra (Attems) from southwestern Africa. Published and unpublished studies are used to explore evidence for convergence among these species, as opposed to traits adapting them to physical aspects of given regions or habitats. Unlike A. t. judaicus, O. ornatus and H. nigra are relatively restricted to arid habitats, although populations of all three species experience a variety of rainfall regimes and regional topographies. Where studied, O. ornatus and H. nigra hibernate during the long, often cool or cold dry season; they forage following warm-season rains. A. t. judaicus , in contrast, forages during its long, warm dry season and hibernates in the cool, wet winter. Populations from the Judaean and Negev deserts differ from those inhabiting a mesic habitat (Megiddo) closer to the coast in regard to rates of development, seasonal activity and seasonal water balance. Convergence in the form of well-developed desiccation resistance characterizes the two strictly desert species. All three species, together with other subtropical millipedes exposed to long dry seasons, are convergent with respect to patterns of diel surface activity and use of shelter. However species- and habitat-specific life-history features such as the seasonal timing of dormancy and emergence tend to mask convergence at the habitat level. Hence, the independent evolution of the three species with desert populations has resulted in life histories and habitat use that combine a moderate amount of convergence with considerable opportunistic adaptation to regional and local conditions.  相似文献

An efficient system for Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation of Solanum gilo was established. The marker genes for kanamycin resistance and ß-glucuronidase expression were introduced. A comparison between cotyledon and hypocotyl explants showed that while regeneration was better from hypocotyl explants, cotyledon explants gave better transformation efficiency (46% vs. 32%). Four levels of kanamycin selection (100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/l) were tested for effect on transformation efficiency with each type of explant. Lower levels of kanamycin worked better using cotyledon explants, while higher levels of kanamycin worked better for hypocotyl explants. All nine t0 plants tested for expression of the kan r gene were positive. Residual feed intake (RFI) is now considered a more reasonable metric to evaluate animal feed efficiency. In this study, the correlation between RFI and other feed efficiency traits was investigated and gene expression within the hypothalamus was determined in low RFI (LRFI) and high RFI (HRFI) ducks. Further, several hypothalamic neuropeptide genes were measured using quantitative real‐time PCR. The mean feed intake value was 160 g/day, whereas the egg mass laid (EML) and body weight were approximately 62.4 g/day and 1.46 kg respectively. Estimates for heritability of RFI, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and feed intake were 0.26, 0.18 and 0.23 respectively. RFI is phenotypically positively correlated with feed intake and FCR (< 0.01). The expression of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and neuropeptide Y receptor Y5 (NPY5R) mRNA was higher in HRFI ducks compared with LRFI ducks (< 0.05), whereas that of proopiomelanocortin (POMC), melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) and cholecystokinin (CCK) was lower (< 0.05). The mRNA expression of gonadotropin‐releasing hormone 1 (luteinizing‐releasing hormone) (GNRH1) and prolactin receptor (PRLR) was unchanged between LRFI and HRFI ducks. The results indicate that selection for LRFI could reduce feed intake without significant changes in EML, whereas selection on FCR will increase EML.  相似文献

A degree-day model was derived to predict egg hatch for Criconemella xenoplax. Eggs collected from gravid females were incubated in distilled water at constant temperatures of 10-35 C. Sixty-six percent of all eggs hatched between 13 and 32 C, and 42% hatched at 10 C. All eggs aborted above 32.5 C. Between 25 and 32 C, 8.5 ± 0.5 days were required for egg hatch. Degree-day requirement for egg hatch at 10-30 C was estimated to be 154 ± 5 with a base of 9.03 ± 0.04 C. This base of 9 C was adopted in studies of the relationship between degree-days and nematode population increase on Prunus seedlings grown 9-11 weeks in a greenhouse. Degree-day accumulations were based upon daily averages from maximum and minimum air temperatures. Ratios of final to initial population densities exhibited an exponential pattern in relation to degree-day accumulations with proportionate doubling increment of 0.100 ± 0.049 every 139 ± 8 degree-days. These results provide a means of predicting nematode population increase under greenhouse conditions and a basis for choosing sampling intervals when evaluating nematode multiplication.  相似文献

A case of chronic cerebral paragonimiasis westermani   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We report a chronic cerebral paragonimiasis from a 41-year-old Korean man who complains a headache and weakness of left motor neuron components. Magnetic resonance images of the brain revealed conglomerates of multiple ring-like enhancements in temporo-occipital and frontal lobes of the right hemisphere. An intradermal test for paragonimiasis westermani was positive. The patient was born near an endemic area of paragonimiasis and used to eat boiled or grilled freshwater crayfish in his childhood. Nodules in the brain were resected through craniotomies. The eggs of P. westermani were identified pathologically and parasitologically in the calcified necrotic lesions. Examinations on sputum and fecal specimens for the eggs of P. westermani were shown to be negative and a chest radiograph was normal. It is presumed that the brain lesions were formed by P. westermani approximately 30 years ago.  相似文献

We isolated and purified mitochondria from mouse livers and spinach leaves.When added into egg extracts of Xenopus laevis,they caused nuclei of mouse liver to undergo apoptotic changes.Chromatin condensation,margination and DNA ladder were observed.After incubating isolated mitochondria in some hypotonic solutions,and centrifuging these mixtures at mgh speed,we got mitochondrial supernatants.It was found that in the absence of cytosolic factor,the supernatant alone was able to induce apoptotic changes in nuclei.The effective components were partly of protein.DNA fragmentation was partly inhibited by caspase inhibitors AC-DEVD-CHO and AC-YVAD-CHO.Meanwhile,caspase inhibitors fully blocked chromatin condensation.Primary characterization of the nuclear endonuclease(s) induced by mitochondrial supernatants was also conducted.It was found that this endonuclease is different from endonuclease G,cytochrome c-induced nuclease,or Ca^2 -activated endonuclease.  相似文献

Palaeopropithecids, or “sloth lemurs,” are a diverse clade of large‐bodied Malagasy subfossil primates characterized by their inferred suspensory positional behavior. The most recently discovered genus of the palaeopropithecids is Babakotia, and it has been described as more arboreal than Mesopropithecus, but less than Palaeopropithecus. In this article, the within‐bone and between‐bones articular and cross‐sectional diaphyseal proportions of the humerus and femur of Babakotia were compared to extant lemurs, Mesopropithecus and Palaeopropithecus in order to further understand its arboreal adaptations. Additionally, a sample of apes and sloths (Choloepus and Bradypus) are included as functional outgroups composed of suspensory adapted primates and non‐primates. Results show that Babakotia and Mesopropithecus both have high humeral/femoral shaft strength proportions, similar to extant great apes and sloths and indicative of forelimb suspensory behavior, with Babakotia more extreme in this regard. All three subfossil taxa have relatively large femoral heads, also associated with suspension in modern taxa. However, Babakotia and Mesopropithecus (but not Palaeopropithecus) have relatively small femoral head surface area to shaft strength proportions suggesting that hind‐limb positioning in these taxa during climbing and other behaviors was different than in extant great apes, involving less mobility. Knee and humeral articular dimensions relative to shaft strengths are small in Babakotia and Mesopropithecus, similar to those found in modern sloths and divergent from those in extant great apes and lemurs, suggesting more sloth‐like use of these joints during locomotion. Mesopropithecus and Babakotia are more similar to Choloepus in humerofemoral head and length proportions while Palaeopropithecus is more similar to Bradypus. These results provide further evidence of the suspensory adaptations of Babakotia and further highlight similarities to both extant suspensory primates and non‐primate slow arboreal climbers and hangers. The protein synthetic and secretory activity of spider tubuliform glands is known to be coordinated with the reproductive stage of the spider. For spiders that produce multiple egg cases, such as the black widow Latrodectus hesperus, this means that the cells that make up the tubuliform gland cycle from minimal to maximal silk protein synthesis and exocytosis as the spider transitions from early vitellogenesis to a gravid state and back. The impact of these transitions on the cells that form the tubuliform gland has yet to be characterized. The entire tubuliform gland undergoes an elastic deformation, doubling in size in response to the accumulation and depletion of egg case silk proteins within its lumen. Similarly, the diversity and organization of organelles within the cytoplasm of the secretory epithelial cells that make up the wall of the tubuliform gland change with the reproductive stage of the spider. Progression of a spider from early to late vitellogenesis is accompanied by decondensed nucleoli and distention of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, markers of protein synthetic activity. The presumed silk proteins that fill the lumen of the tubuliform gland of a gravid spider include a fibrous matrix with homogeneous spherical inclusions. These components are also present within the cytoplasm of the cell; however, only the fibrous material appears to be enclosed by membranous organelles. Transition of the tubuliform gland from peak silk synthesis back to a quiescent state is marked by the appearance of multivesicular bodies and organelles resembling phagophores and autophagosomes, suggestive of a role for autophagy in the process of recovery. The reproducible cellular dynamics of the tubuliform silk gland of the black widow spider makes it a potential model system for study of the regulation of silk gene expression, endomembrane transport, and exocytosis of silk proteins and autophagy.  相似文献

Eggs of 23 Characiformes and eight Siluriformes, belonging to nine families with diverse reproductive behaviour, were ultrastructurally analysed. The migratory species exhibited non-adhesive eggs, whereas, most of the sedentary species presented some degree of egg adhesiveness. Among the Characiformes, non-adhesive eggs showed zona radiata with pore-canals or a fibrillar net at the surface; weakly adhesive eggs presented only zona radiata with pore-canals while adhesive eggs exhibited zona radiata with apparatus like globules, filaments, villi or honeycomb-like pores depending on the systematic group. The 'jelly' coat is strongly related to the Siluriformes eggs apparently without relationship with adhesiveness. A micropylar disc was present in adhesive eggs of a few species of both Characiformes and Siluriformes. Some patterns were characteristic of the animal pole, others of the vegetal pole, and others were common to both poles. The radial ridges converging to the micropyle in Astyanax bimaculatus lacustris appear to be related to fertilization. In general, egg surface structures in the Characiformes varied according to the genus, whereas all Siluriformes showed a similar egg surface pattern, regardless of the group analysed. Multivariate analysis allowed the identification of eight clusters among the Characiformes and three among the Siluriformes showing relationships between reproductive style and egg characteristics. It is suggested that egg surface and adhesiveness may be related to reproductive patterns and to phylogenesis.  相似文献

本文以沿渤海蝗区东亚飞蝗Locusta migratoria manilensis (Meyen) 越冬卵块为研究对象,野外采用450 m和50 m规则栅格取样,包括卵量、植被覆盖度、土壤含水量、含盐量、土壤pH和有机质等,利用地统计学方法,在GIS平台下,分析研究区域内影响蝗虫产卵选择的环境因子、蝗虫卵块的空间异质性及分布格局。结果表明, 植被覆盖度、土壤含盐量和土壤含水量在有卵和无卵的环境中存在极显著的差异,飞蝗产卵时最适宜的植被覆盖度、土壤含水量和盐度范围分别为0~30%、10.1%~20.0%和0.09%~1.99%,且当小环境植被覆盖度>50%、土壤含水量>30%或含盐量>3%时,飞蝗不再选择产卵。蝗虫卵块具有高度空间异质性,其空间自相关范围平均为390 m且呈斑块、聚集分布,蝗虫卵块变异函数曲线为球状模型。利用块段克立格法进行空间局部插值,得到研究区域卵块的空间分布格局图,可较准确地描述飞蝗卵块在研究区域内的空间分布、形状、地理位置及相对位置。研究结果可为地面卵块抽样调查、实时跟踪蝗卵胚胎发育进程、确定蝗灾早期发生点、片防治区域及蝗灾早期遥感预警提供科学依据。  相似文献
