To attempt a complete review of turbellarian ecology in the time and space available would result in superficiality. Therefore, I have restricted this account to the four basic ecological processes which have and continue to determine flatworm distribution and abundance. These are: (1) historical or zoogeographical events which permit or prevent a species from reaching a habitat; (2) physiological limitations of the species vis à vis the habitat; (3) access to suitable energy sources and (4) the effects of competition, predation and parasitism, referred to collectively as bionomic processes.  相似文献

An ecological study of the rotifer species Trochosphaera solstitialis (Thorpe, 1893) was conducted for a period of eight months in a temporary pond in eastern Texas, U.S.A. The pond was found to be environmentally stressed and contained large amounts of decomposing vegetation. Physico-chemical factors contributing to the stressed conditions were low dissolved oxygen concentrations, low pH values, high ammonia concentrations, and high color values caused by large concentrations of iron, tannin and lignin. Large concentrations of iron, tannin, and lignin seem to be highly correlated with T. solstitialis populations. Physicochemical conditions probably eliminated predators of the rotifer, such as fish. Males of T. solstitialis were observed which never left the body cavity of the female. Males probably do not feed with an apparent rudimentary digestive system.  相似文献

A stand of Stratiotes aloides L. in a riverside lagoon, Abborravan on the Vindelälven river in N Sweden, was studied for 3 years (1975–1977). The stand was vegetative, at all times submerged and therefore never flowering. On average each plant produced 3 adventitious roots and 40 leaves. One or two turions were also produced each year, together with stolons and associated offsets. At the beginning of June 1977 the population density was 42 plants/m2 and the biomass was 290 kg/ha (dry wt. basis). At the end of September that year the respective values were 90/m2 and 756 kg/ha. The dry wt./fresh wt. ratio of the biomass changed little during that period, from 6.4 to 6.5%. These and other results are compared with the respective data for Stratiotes stands in Central European lakes. In Abborravan Stratiotes seems well-adapted to survive the prevailing, hard, winter conditions. Freezing in situ is quite normal and is only lethal if the overwintering basal rosettes become frozen solid. The turions are quite frost-hardy.  相似文献

Three species of the genusPicris L. are native in Tropical Africa:P. abyssinica Sch. Bip. (Ethiopia),P. xylopoda Lack, spec. nova (Nigeria, Ethiopia) andP. humilis DC. (Senegal, Mali). There are indications that the two perennial species,P. abyssinica andP. xylopoda, are related to and have evolved from a primitive Central Asiatic stock in a manner parallel to many African species ofCrepis L.P. humilis, on the other hand, is a small annual plant with a high number of derived characters. In EuropeAthyrium filix-femina has a constant chromosome number (2n = 80) and is sexual. The normal type of reproduction is intergametophytic crossing. In the gametophyte phase there is a hormone system which induces dark germination of spores and antheridium formation. Sporophytes originating from single prothalli show that a genetic load is present in all population examined. It appears not to be a simple allelic load but a complicated balanced system. Morphological variability can be interpreted as the expression of the genetic heterogeneity of populations. There are no crossing barriers, not even between insular populations hundreds of kilometers apart.  相似文献

The population structure of 4 California Iridaea cordata (Turner) Bory populations was studied. Random sampling procedures were used to measure seasonal variations in standing crops, density and size-class distribution of life history stages. The results describe aspects of the in situ life history; a prerequisite to realistically considering the distribution, ecology or life history expressions of an alga. Seasonal fluctuations in density occur only in the juvenile stage, which is initiated during the winter (November to January) predominantly from the basal perennial crusts. Both the gametangial and tetrasporangial stages are present throughout the year. The tetrasporangial stage is dominant in relation to the sexual stages in both density and biomass during most of the year, except spring when the new crop in just maturing and all stages are abundant. Density in nearly constant and observable changes in the populations are due to biomass fluctuations. Seasonal lows in biomass occur during the winter with the majority of thalli in the smaller size-classes. Growth and maturation culminate in peak summer crops and dominance of the tetrasporangial stage, followed by autumnal senescence and die-back in winter. Carrageenans analyzed from immature thalli showed a predominance of lambda-type, previously determined as specific for tetrasporangial plants. This indirect evidence for the tetrasporangial nature of immature plants suggests that dominance of the diploid stage occurred prior to blade development and most likely at the spore level. Alternatively, field results indicate a major contribution and possible replacement of alternation of gametangial and tetrasporangial stage by thallus perennation and vegetative reproduction.  相似文献

The history and nature of the new environmental movement in the United States are reviewed. Since understanding of a social movement is enhanced by learning the views and perceptions of outsiders, the continuing debate between the environmental movement and its critics is examined. First, disagreements over the nature and the severity of the so-called environmental crisis are described. Second, the ideological differences between environmentalists and their critics are reviewed, particularly their contrasting views of man, society, nature, and economic growth. Finally, the political critique of the movement is examined, with attention given to the composition of the membership, the alleged superficiality of its proposed solutions to environmental problems, and the alleged discrimination against both poor people in the United States and the poor nations.  相似文献

Von Hippel and colleagues have highlighted the crucial role of users in innovation in different industries and types of products. They describe the innovation process in terms of the distinct domains of knowledge that producers and users possess. Producers have knowledge about technical solutions and users about their needs, the context of use, and their own capabilities as users. Both sets of knowledge are characterized by "stickiness": They move relatively freely within their own domain but are difficult to transfer outside of it.
In the case of radical innovations for sustainable consumption, the problem of "sticky information" is compounded. Both producers and consumers need to reach out of their conventional competencies and search for new solutions. "Societal actors," such as government bodies or environmental experts, can show the way to such solutions, but this new knowledge needs to be integrated with the "sticky" knowledge about everyday practices in production and consumption.
In the present article we attempt to conceptualize the role and interaction of user and producer knowledge with the knowledge of environmental experts in housing energy innovations. We do so by applying the user−producer interaction framework to a case study on the introduction of low-energy housing concepts in Finland. On the basis of this analysis, we draw conclusions on the potential and limitations of today's practices in the field. For example, we suggest that user involvement can help to enhance the acceptance of low-energy solutions but that the methods for involving users need to be adapted to the particular circumstances in each industry.  相似文献
