Heterogeneity in photo-identification rates among individuals is a potentially serious problem in many studies of cetacean biology, especially the analysis of populations. However, this heterogeneity is usually difficult to identify or measure. Two instances in which closed groups of female and immature sperm whales ( Physeter macrocepbalus ) were tracked and identified using fluke photographs over periods of days off the Galápagos Islands allowed direct examination of heterogeneity in identification rates. A group of nine animals followed in 1999 provided almost no evidence for heterogeneity (permutation test for heterogeneity, P = 0.48), with an estimated coefficient of variation in identification rates of 0.03 (95% CI from 1,000 bootstrap replications: 0.00–0.10). In contrast, the identification rates of a group of 22 animals followed in 1995 seemed to show potentially important differences ( P = 0.058, CV = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.07–0.28). These differences were not related to the internal social structure of the group or to differences in numbers of markings on the flukes, but smaller whales had lower identification rates. Thus, young sperm whales may be underrepresented in photo-identification studies, but adults within groups seem to have similar identification rates. Situations in which animals are photo-identified from closed populations of known size are particularly useful for examining heterogeneity. They should be vigorously exploited by those who use photo-identification to examine population or behavioral biology.  相似文献

The spermatozoon of Peisos petrunkevitchi differs significantly from those of any of the investigated dendrobranchiates in the anterior fusiform acrosome, lacking a spike, and embedded in (instead of capping) the nuclear region. In contrast, the position of the acrosome and the internal arrangement of its contents, as well as the apomorphic presence of a pair of centrioles (absent in all known dendrobranchiate spermatozoa) at the base of the acrosomal perforatorium, indicate a close affinity between this sperm plan and that found in reptants, especially anomurans and brachyurans. Based on the present and previous observations on decapod spermatozoal ultrastructure, we review the phylogeny of dendrobranchiate spermatozoa in the perspective of most recent phylogenetic analyses of malacostracan crustaceans.  相似文献

Abstract Male sperm whales are the basis for a commercially important whale-watching industry at Kaikoura, New Zealand. We examined the influence of whale-watching boats and aircraft over three years using observations from an independent research boat and from shore. We employed an information-theoretic approach to determine which factors were necessary to explain variation in blow interval, time at surface, and time to first click. In almost all analyses, models required the inclusion of the presence of the research boat or whale-watching boats or airplanes. The only exception was the model explaining variation in blow intervals observed from shore, which required only season. We also analyzed spatial behavior at the surface. Resident whales changed direction significantly more in the presence of whale-watching boats compared to encounters with only the research boat present. No such difference was observed for encounters with aircraft. Our results thus indicate that sperm whales off Kaikoura respond to whale-watching activities, although these changes are small and most likely not of biological importance. However, resident whales responded less to these activities compared to transient whales, possibly indicating habituation and, more importantly, the need to monitor continued activities closely.  相似文献

Fine structure of developing sperm of the monospecific genus, Ekphymatodera, was compared with other Heteroderinae as part of a study to recognize diversity and phylogenetically informative characters within the subfamily. Sperm of Ekphymatodera originate from germ cells connected to a central rachis, a character which is shared with Globodera, but not with other Heteoderinae. In Ekphymatodera, and cyst-forming genera, a layer of cortical microtubules lies just beneath the surface of the plasma membrane. Sperm of Ekphymatodera are unique among Heteroderinae examined by the presence of spiral surface elevations on the filopodia, a character that may prove to be a synapomorphy for Sarisoderini. Fibrous bodies are abundant in spermatids; however, they do not persist in sperm of Ekphymatodera as they do in Meloidodera and Verutus. The male gonad of Ekphymatodera is lined by epithelial cells, which are greatly enlarged near the ejaculatory canal. These enlarged cells contain vesicles with concentric lamellar inclusions, not observed in other genera of the subfamily. Sperm of Heteroderinae are rich in diversity, and examination of additional representative species may indicate new phylogenetically informative characters.  相似文献

Fertilization of tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) eggs with heterologous sperm from carp ( Cyprinus carpio ), and from some other eyprinids resulted in higher levels of haploid gynogenetic development than in unfertilized eggs. Normal and irradiated carp sperm achieved similar rates of activation of tilapia eggs, but lower rates than those achieved by irradiated tilapia sperm. Diploidy in gynogenetic eggs fertilized with carp sperm was restored using pressure shocks and resulted in the development of healthy tilapia gynogens.  相似文献

A hitherto undescribed Luciocephalus species was bred in captivity for the first time. The male mouthbrooders spawned about 80 slightly pear-shaped eggs with a diameter varying from 2-2 to 3-4 mm. The enveloping zona radiata measured 15 μm in thickness. In the SEM the outer surface of the zona radiata showed a pattern which is unique among all teleosts studied to date. Many of the numerous, virtually parallel ridges extended from the vegetal to the animal pole. There they spiralled towards the micropyle and terminated in its pit. The role of such a surface pattern as a sperm guidance system was discussed.  相似文献

The physiological and biochemical consequences of treating Le (tall) and le (dwarf) pea seedlings with varying quantities of the gibberellins [3H]GA20 and GA1 have been investigated. Although the percentage uptake of these compounds from the site of application on the 3 stipules was low and most of the applied GA remained unmetabolised in situ, the quantitative relationship between GA translocation and GA dosage was found to be linear for GA1 but saturating for GA20. The movement of the GAs and their subsequently produced metabolites was mainly acropetal. They accumulated in greatest quantity in the apical extremities of the shoot. Overall, the extent to which GA20 was metabolished in le seedlings was considerably less than in Le pea seedlings. Although all le tissues contained significantly less [3H]GA1 than their Le counterparts, phenotypic effects of the le mutation were apparent only on internode and tendril development. Increased tissue growth, consequent upon GA treatment, was also apparent only in the internodes and tendrils of le plants. For internodes, GA1 content determined the mid-logarithmic-phase growth rate and, consequently, final length. In human in vitro fertilization (I.V.F.), it was first assumed that all the embryos obtained had the same developmental potential whatever the quality of sperm. However, this has not been confirmed. We have used the coculture technique and determined the blastocyst formation rate in three groups of patients: group 1: patients with normal sperm count (>20 × 106/ml), motility (>30%), and morphology (>50%); group 2: patients treated by I.V.F. with frozen donor sperm; group 3: patients with severely impaired sperm quality (<3 × 106 forward motile and morphologically normal spermatozoa per ml). In group 1, we found a strong correlation between cleavage rate and blastocyst formation rate (P < 0.0001) with a blastocyst formation rate comprised between 40% and 50%. This was not true for the two other groups for which the overall number of blastocysts obtained and the number of patients having at least one blastocyst were severely reduced (P < 0.0001). These data are discussed in terms of DNA quality, timing of formation of the pronuclei, and delays in cell cycles at the time of genomic activation. These observations lead to a new approach to the study of fertilizing ability of poor quality sperm. It may help in the decision as to whether couples treated for male infertility should be excluded from I.V.F. protocols. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Suspensions of nearly 100% viable golden hamster sperm were prepared by passing washed cauda epididymal sperm through a column of 0.25–0.3 mm glass beads. Incubations of these viable sperm under in vitro capacitation conditions in volumes of 0.1 or 1 ml (2–2.5 × 106/ml) resulted in 85–92% viable sperm after four hours and 45 minutes of incubation. More than 70% of these sperm were judged to have been capacitated after four hours and 45 minutes of incubation on the basis of their having undergone acrosome reactions and the presence of high numbers of sperm exhibiting the activated motility characteristic of capacitated hamster sperm. Thus, for the first time, procedures are available that will yield large numbers of viable capacitated sperm for biochemical analysis and that will also allow other studies of hamster sperm capacitation with minimum interference from molecules released from dead sperm.  相似文献

Spermatozoa were flushed with mineral oil from the lower isthmus of the rabbit oviduct at four hours postcoitus (pc) and 11 hours pc. Videotapes were made of sperm behavior in the native isthmic fluid and after dilution of the fluid with culture medium. The tapes showed that, initially, spermatozoa in the native isthmic fluid were virtually immotile, but immediately resumed movement on contact with the culture medium. Isthmic sperm motility then evolved over a five- to 10-minute interval into the characteristic biphasic pattern of activated movement. Cine films of isthmic spermatozoa taken with a high-speed camera were analyzed to determine flagellar beat frequency, maximum flagellar curvature, and swimming velocity. Progressiveness ratios and hydrodynamic power outputs were then calculated for individual spermatozoa. Two phases of activated sperm movement, a whiplash phase and a progressive phase, were identified and characterized. The power output of activated spermatozoa increased twentyfold in comparison with the preactivated state. The power output of activated spermatozoa did not differ between the two phases of activated movement.  相似文献
