In wind-tunnel experiments, Niklas (1985) has demonstrated the ability of anemophilous plants to select pollen from their own species from the airstream. However, there have been no field experiments to establish whether this operates in nature. We surveyed the pollents on the stigmas of four different, coextensive, dioecious anemophilous species surrounded by a Pinus radiata plantation. The alien pine pollen was overrepresented relative to background levels on only one of the four species. For all three indigenous species with both male and female plants in the area, the highest proportion — in all cases more than 40% — of the pollen found on their stigmas came from their own species. One indigenous species lacked male plants in the area; consequently, the results from this species are difficult to interpret. However, for all four species, there was at least 15% pine pollen, and some pollen of other indigenous species. These results suggest that there is some pollen selection, but that the mechanisms are may be not as effective as Niklas has suggested. 相似文献

Large-scale marker-assisted selection requires highly reproducible, consistent and simple markers. The use of genetic markers is important in woody plant breeding in general, and in apple in particular, because of the high level of heterozygosity present in Malus species. We present here the transformation of two RAPD markers, which we found previously to be linked to the major scab resistance gene Vf, into more reliable and reproducible markers that can be applied directly to apple breeding. We give an example of how the use of such markers can speed up selection for the introduction of scab resistance genes into the same plant, reducing labour and avoiding time-consuming test crosses. The usefulness of marker-assisted selection (MAS) to develop salt-tolerant breeding lines from a F2 derived from L. esculentum x L. pimpinellifolium has been studied. Interval mapping methodology of quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis was used to locate more precisely previously detected salt tolerance QTLs. A new QTL for total fruit weight under salinity (TW) near TG24 was detected. Most of the detected QTLs [3 for TW, 5 for fruit number, (FN) and 4 for fruit weight (FW)] had low R
2 values, except the FW QTL in the TG180-TG48 interval, which explains 36.6% of the total variance. Dominant and overdominant effects were detected at the QTLs for TW, whereas gene effects at the QTLs for FJV and FW ranged from additive to partial dominance. Phenotypic selection of F2 familes and marker-assisted selection of F3 families were carried out. Yield under salinity decreased in the F2 generation. F3 means were similar to those of the F1 as a consequence of phentoypic selection. The most important selection response for every trait was obtained from the F3 to F4 where MAS was applied. While F3 variation was mainly due to the within-family component, in the F4 the FN and FW between-family component was larger than the within-family one, indicating an efficient compartmentalization and fixation of QTLs into the F4 families. Comparison of the yield of these families under control versus saline conditions showed that fruit weight is a key trait to success in tomato salt-tolerance improvement using wild Lycopersicon germplasm. The QTLs we have detected under salinity seem to be also working under control conditions, although the interaction family x treatment was significant for TW, thereby explaining the fact that the selected families responded differently to salinity. 相似文献

Rice DNAs from a gall midge resistant variety, Abhaya, a susceptible variety, Tulsi and their F3 progeny were screened using 500 random primers in conjunction with bulked-segregant analysis in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with a view to detecting random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) linked to the gene, Gm4t, which confers resistance to gall midge, a dipteran insect pest of rice. A total of 454 primers were able to produce a distinct amplification pattern, and 3695 bands/loci were amplified between the phenotypically different parents. Of these, 304 bands were polymorphic between the parents, with 19 being phenotypespecific. One of these primers, E20, amplified 2 bands, E20570 and E20583, which are tightly linked to resistance and susceptibility, respectively. These specific bands were cloned and sequenced, and a 94% sequence homology was found between the two fragments. Two specific 20-mer oligonucleotides were synthesized, based on the sequence information of E20583, for use in PCR amplification directly from genomic DNAs. These PCR primers were able to amplify phenotype-specific bands, a 583-bp fragment in susceptible F3 lines and a 570-bp fragment in resistant F3 lines that had been derived from a cross between the parents, indicating their potential and utility for marker-aided selection of the Gm4t gene in rice. Its use would facilitate the early and efficient selection of resistant genes in plant breeding programmes and even in those areas where the insect is not known to occur. The additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) model has emerged as a powerful analytical tool for genotype x environment studies. The objective of the present study was to assess its value in quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping. This was done through the analysis of a large two-way table of genotype-by-environment data of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grain yields, where the genotypes constituted a genetic population suitable for mapping studies. Grain yield data of 150 doubled haploid lines derived from the Steptoe x Morex cross, and the two parental lines, were taken by the North American Barley Genome Mapping Project (NABGMP) at 16 environments throughout the barley production areas of the USA and Canada. Four regions of the genome were responsible for most of the differential genotypic expression across environments. They accounted for approximately 50% of the genotypic main effect and 30% of the genotype x environment interaction (GE) sums of squares. The magnitude and sign of AMMI scores for genotypes and sites facilitate inferences about specific interactions. The parallel use of classification (cluster analysis of environments) and ordination (principal component analysis of GE matrix) techniques allowed most of the variation present in the genotype x environment matrix to be summarized in just a few dimensions, specifically four QTLs showing differential adaptation to four clusters of environments. Summary Theoretical discussions concerning how animals might best sample and select mates have suggested that individuals could base decisions either on a sample of mates (sampled-based decisions) or on a threshold of comparison (threshold-based decisions). Recent theoretical work demonstrates that threshold-based mating decisions generate higher expected fitness than sample-based mating decisions when search costs exist. Empirical results from most unmanipulated systems, however, either conclude that females make sample-based decisions or are inconclusive. A few experimental studies designed to detect mating thresholds purport to demonstrate threshold-based choice but an examination of these studies indicates such conclusions were premature. We believe that few examples of threshold-based choice exist because protocols designed to identify mating thresholds were often inconsistent with models of threshold choice. We suggest that future empirical work strive not to document mating thresholdsper se. Rather, future work might best reveal decision rules by manipulating the distribution of quality among potential mates; such manipulations predict uniquely how females using sample-based and threshold-based decision rules should behave. 相似文献

We investigated the effect of flowering time, display size, and local floral density on fruit set in Tolumnia variegata, a pollination-limited orchid that offers no reward to its pollinator(s). During 1990, natural variation in flowering time, display size, and fruit set were monitored in 508 plants at one locality in Puerto Rico. The following season, orchid floral abundance per host tree (Randia aculeata) was manipulated to investigate its effect on fruit set. Four floral abundance treatments were established (700, 500, 300, and 100), each replicated four times. Flowering time was the most important trait affecting fruit set. The proportion of plants setting at least one fruit was significantly high early and late in the season, but low during the flowering peak. Thus, strong disruptive selection differential on flowering phenology was found. Display size had little effect on fruit set. A weak, but significant disruptive selection differential on display size was found. Orchid floral abundance per host tree had a significant effect on fruit set. Early in the season, T. variegata flowers with intermediate number of conspecific flowers exhibited a greater probability of setting fruit than those in host trees with fewer or more flowers. Our results show that flowering phenology may be evolutionarily unstable, possibly a consequence of the deception pollination system. Furthermore, a deception strategy would be relatively unsuccessful in populations where plants are found in either very dense or sparse patches. 相似文献

Skewed segregations are frequent events in segregating populations derived from different interspecific crosses in tomato. To determine a basis for skewed segregations in the progeny of the cross between Lycopersicon esculentum and L. pennellii, monogenic segregations of 16 isozyme loci were analyzed in an F2 and two backcross populations of this cross. In the F2, 9 loci mapping to chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 9, 10 and 12 exhibited skewed segregations and in all cases there was an excess of L. pennellii homozygotes. The genotypic frequencies at all but one locus were at Hardy-Weinberg equilibria. In the backcross populations, all except two loci exhibited normal Mendelian segregations. No post-zygotic selection model could statistically or biologically explain the observed segregation patterns in the F2 and backcross populations. A pre-zygotic selection model, assuming selective elimination of the male gametophytes during pollen function (i.e., from pollination to karyogamy), could adequately explain the observed segregations in all three populations. The direction of the skewed segregations in the F2 population was consistent with that expected based on the effects of unilateral incompatibility reactions between the two species. In addition, the chromosomal locations of 5 of the 9 markers that exhibited skewed segregations coincided with the locations of several known compatibility-related genes in tomato. Multigenic unilateral incompatibility reactions between L. esculentum pollen and the stigma or style of L. pennellii (or its hybrid derivatives) are suggested to be the major cause of the skewed segregations in the F2 progeny of this cross. 相似文献

Arthropod prey are expected to be more vulnerable to their predators immediately following molt. The effects of springtail (Isotoma carpenteri) postmolt vulnerability on interactions with a pseudoscorpion predator were examined in the laboratory. Springtails exposed to vials pretreated with pseudoscorpions (Apochthonius minimus) delayed molting compared to those prey that were exposed to vials pretreated only with springtails. Although their escape ability (measured as distance jumped) was unaffected by molt condition, postmolt springtails were more profitable in terms of reduced predator handling time following capture.
