In the ecotone research region of the Danube in Austria (Man-and-the-Biosphere (MaB)- project 5/21, Austrian Academy of Science) the macrophytes are one of the most important groups of organisms investigated. The species composition and the plant mass in hydrologically dynamic, and in predominantly stagnant sections of a system of lateral branches and sloughs were studied. This study showed that areas protected from frequent disturbance by floods had a greater number of species and higher biomass of aquatic macrophytes. Some species were shown to be evenly distributed throughout the branch system, whereas other species tended to form rare, but large singular patches. A set of new data elaboration techniques enabled us to describe the distribution pattern of the aquatic vegetation in this large branch system of the River Danube.  相似文献

Laboratory microcosms were used to: i) measure the effects of soil moisture on survival of Steinernema riobravis and ii) investigate the suitability of using microcosms to study motility and survival of these nematodes. Nematodes recovered from soil contained in petri dishes declined by more than 95% during 7 days, whereas nematodes recovered from the inner surfaces of dishes increased 35-fold. After 7 days in dishes, >20 times as many nematodes were recovered from dish surfaces than from soil. Nematodes exhibited a negative geotropism; greater numbers of nematodes were recovered from the lid surfaces than from the surfaces of dishes. Survivorship of nematodes in soil in plastic centrifuge tubes was somewhat greater than in petri dishes, and fewer nematodes ascended above the soil line in tubes than dishes. Downward migration of nematodes was inversely related to soil column diameter, possibly due to relatively unimpeded movement along container surfaces. An assay was developed by which nematodes were rinsed from the inner surfaces of centrifuge tubes into the soil. The resulting slurry was then processed on Baermann trays to recover motile nematodes. Nematode survival in soil in centrifuge tubes was higher at soil moistures between 2-4% than at lower (0.5-1.0%) and higher (4.0-12.0%) moisture levels. Survival of S. riobravis may be enhanced by quiescence induced by moisture deficits.  相似文献

Noctuidonema guyaneme is an interesting ectoparasite of adult Lepidoptera that feeds on hosts from at least five families with its long stylet. Noctuidonema guyanense spends its entire life on the adult moth and is sustained as it is passed from moth to moth during host mating. Overlapping host generations are essential for parasite survival. This nematode occurs throughout tropical and subtropical America and is transported by at least one of its hosts, Spodoptera frugiperda, during migration to northern sites in the United States each spring. Noctuidonema guyanense debilitates its hosts. Research conducted to help determine the biological control importance of this nematode is reviewed. Two additional species, N. daptria and N. dibolia, are now known for Noctuidonema.  相似文献

The grass flora of Namibia (374 species in 110 genera) shows surprisingly little variation in 13C values along a rainfall gradient (50–600 mm) and in different habitat conditions. However, there are significant differences in the 13C values between the metabolic types of the C4 photosynthetic pathway. NADP-ME-type C4 species exhibit the highest 13C values (–11.7 ) and occur mainly in regions with high rainfall. NAD-ME-type C4 species have significantly lower 13C values (–13.4 ) and dominate in the most arid part of the precipitation regime. PCK-type C4 species play an intermediate role (–12.5 ) and reach a maximum abundance in areas of intermediate precipitation. This pattern is also evident in genera containing species of different metabolic types. Within the same genus NAD species reach more negative 13C values than PCK species and 13C values decreased with rainfall. Also in Aristida, with NADP-ME-type photosynthesis, 13C values decreased from –11 in the inland region (600 mm precipitation) to –15 near the coast (150 mm precipitation), which is a change in discrimination which is otherwise associated by a change in metabolism. The exceptional C3 species Eragrostis walteri and Panicum heterostachyum are coastal species experiencing 50 mm precipitation only. Many of the rare species and monotypic genera grow in moist habitats rather than in the desert, and they are not different in their carbon isotope ratios from the more common flora. The role of species diversity with respect to habitat occupation and carbon metabolism is discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis One perspective emphasizing the importance of stochastic processes in determining coral reef fish assemblages implies that there is little organization in species richness, abundance structure, and spatial distribution. We examine the degree to which this perspective is correct by analyzing distribution of fishes on a collection of patch reefs (Discovery Bay, Jamaica). We ask the question whether these patches accumulate species and individuals in a manner consistent with stochastic expectations. To address this question we use two conceptual models, each permitting a different insight. One assumes that fish are distributed stochastically on patches while the other assumes presence of restrictions on fish distribution due to habitat structure. For each conceptual model we use two types of benchmark: we compare observed patterns to those predicted by theoretical models, and we also compare observed patterns to those obtained from a random reallocation of fish individuals to patches. We found that the conceptual model assuming stochastic processes appeared to provide weaker explanation of patterns than the conceptual model that includes restrictions due to habitat structure. Further, and more importantly, we found that (i) the community is shaped by a mixture of stochastic and non-stochastic mechanisms, and (ii) the stochastic assembly processes decrease in importance for species restricted to fewer microhabitat types and sites. Our study therefore indicates that patches do accumulate individuals and species in a manner consistent with stochastic expectations, however, this applies primarily to the habitat generalists (unrestricted species). By the same token, increased habitat specialization by some species imposes constraints on the stochastic model such that it eventually fails.  相似文献

The determination of the various endogenous cylokinins and their distribution among organs is important in understanding their role in growth and development in the intact plant. Cytokinins in young plants of Phaseolus vulgaris were purified by immunoaffinity chromatography and HPLC, and characterised by UV spectra. Zeatin nucleotide (zeatin riboside-5'-monophosphate) and isopentenyladenine nucleotide (isopentenyladenosne-5'-monopnosphate) were the most abundant cytokinins in all organs. Their identities were confirmed by GC-MS. The levels of zeatin, zeatin riboside, isopentenyladenine and isopentenyladenosine never exceeded 5% of the nucleotides, as assessed by a methodology that preserves cytokinin nucleotides. Three extraction methods were compared with qualitatively similar results, though differing in their suppression of nucleotidase activity. Cytokinin nucleotide levels were greater in the stems and petioles than in the roots and leaves on a per gram fresh weight basis, and were greater in the stems than in the other organs on a per plant basis. Levels of the zeatin and isopentenyladenine nucleotides were about equal in the stems and leaves, but in the petioles the zeatin nucleotide levels were about twice the level of isopentenyladenine nucleotide, while in the roots they were about half the isopentenyladenine nucleotide level. The importance of considering the cytokinin form is emphasised.  相似文献

A review is given of the prospects for using process-oriented models of water and nutrient uptake in improving integrated agriculture. Government-imposed restrictions on the use of external inputs will increase the likelihood of (temporary) nutrient or water stress in crop production in NW Europe and thus a better understanding is required of shoot-root-soil interactions than presently available. In modelling nutrient and water uptake, three approaches are possible: 1) models-without-roots, based on empirically derived efficiency ratios for uptake of available resources, 2) models evaluating the uptake potential of root systems as actually found in the field and 3) models which also aim at a prediction of root development as influenced by interactions with environmental factors. For the second type of models the major underlying processes are known and research can concentrate on model refinement on the one hand and practical application on the other. The main parameters required for such models are discussed and examples are given of practical applications. For the third type of models quantification of processes known only qualitatively is urgently needed.  相似文献

Summary Two dimensional gel electrophoresis of total cell protein extracts from not expanded, and primary leaves, petioles, and roots ofVicia faba resulted in four actin isoforms at 43 kDa with pI values from 5.9 to 6.05. In contrast to root extracts, in all leaf extracts an additional immunoreactive polypeptide with a molecular mass of 51 kDa and pI 5.75 was detected. This polypeptide was present in high amounts in protein extracts of purified chloroplasts, whereas no actin isoform at 43 kDa could be demonstrated. Compared to the tissue extracts, two actin isoforms at 43 kDa with pI values of 5.9 and 6.0 were enriched, when purified plasma membranes and the membranous fraction of vacuoles were analysed. In contrast, the soluble protein fraction of the plasma membrane preparation contained only two isoactins with pI values of 5.95 and 6.05 and a molecular mass of 43 kDa. Summary We present a simple model of habitat selection in which individuals differ in their ability to discriminate between resource sites' profitabilities. The model investigates the effects of violating the ideal assumption of the well-known ideal free distribution (IFD). We show that (1) variability in perceptual limits within a population can significantly change the distribution of foraging animals even though the mean perceptual limit is the same, (2) the direction of this change depends on the proportion of the population that choose randomly between resource sites and (3) better perceivers are more likely to be found at individually more profitable sites, which, because of undermatching with respect to the IFD, are also the absolutely more profitable sites. We note that variability in perceptual limits almost always led to an undermatching of organisms to resources, thereby extending previous workers' results implying that the incorporation of any form of perceptual limits leads to undermatching with respect to the IFD.  相似文献

We formulate and analyze pair-formation models for multiple groups with general pairing rates and arbitrary mixing probabilities. Under the assumption of constant recruitment rates and equal average duration of all types of partnerships, we have shown that the dynamics are relatively simple because of the monotonicity properties of the dynamical system associated with the pairing/mixing of heterogeneous populations of male and female individuals. In fact, we have shown that the corresponding asymptotic stable paired distribution is given precisely by the asymptotic values of the matrices that prescribe the mixing/contact structure. In other words, if the sizes of the mixing subpopulations of males and females are asymptotically constant and if the average durations of partnerships are about the same regardless of type, then the matrices that describe the mixing between subpopulations also characterize the distribution of paired types. Alternatively, if the distribution of the average duration of relationships between individuals has a large variance then it may be impossible to detect any relationship between the mixing/contact structure and the observed distribution of paired types. The study of models with constant per-capita recruitment rates give rise to homogeneous systems of degree one. The analysis of the dynamics of pairs for models with exponentially growing populations of singles is complicated. So far, we are only able to classify the stability of all non-strictly positive boundary exponential solutions. From our incomplete analysis, it is not possible to detect necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and stability of strictly interior exponential solutions. We cannot rule out the possibility of oscillations. The mathematical problems associated with the stability of exponential solutions of dynamical systems of degree one are of relevance in demography, epidemiology, and population dynamics.On leave from University of Alabama in Huntsville  相似文献
