Climatic anomalies may produce, or accelerate, geographic range expansions of species limited by temperature or other climatic variables. Most such expansions are only temporary, before the prevailing climatic conditions drive the founder populations extinct. In contrast, here, we report a recent rapid shift of the range limit during the record hot summer of 2003 in southern Europe that has the potential to be both permanent, and to have important implications on species range dynamics in general. The winter pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa), an important pine defoliator whose larvae feed in colonies during the winter, is limited in its distribution by winter temperatures. In the last three decades, warmer winters have led to a gradual but substantial expansion of its range both latitudinally and altitudinally. In the summer of 2003, T. pityocampa underwent an extraordinary expansion to high elevation pine stands in the Italian Alps; its altitudinal range limit increased by one third of the total altitudinal expansion over the previous three decades. In an experiment, we found flight activity of newly emerged females to increase with temperature. By determining a threshold temperature for flight take‐offs under controlled conditions, we calculated that the nights above the threshold temperature were over five times more frequent, and considerably warmer, at the range limit in 2003 than in an average year. We therefore attribute the colonization of extreme, high‐elevation sites to increased nocturnal dispersal of females during the unusually warm night temperatures in June – August 2003. Importantly, the colonies established at extreme sites survived the winter and produced offspring in 2004, although the range did not expand further because of low night temperatures that year. We discuss several life‐history characteristics of T. pityocampa that maximize the likelihood of population persistence at the new range limit. As global warming continues and climatic anomalies are predicted to become more frequent, our results draw attention to the importance of extreme climatic events in the range formation of phytophagous insects.  相似文献

The cytochalasins (CE, CD, CB and H2CB) inhibit numerous cellular processes which require the interaction of actin with other structural and contractile proteins. In this report we describe the effects of the cytochalasins on the viscosity and morphology of muscle and platelet actin. The cytochalasins decreased the viscosity of F-actin solutions. The effect of H2CB, CB and CD on F-actin viscosity was maximal at concentrations of 20–50μM and did not increase with time. In contrast, CE caused a progressive decrease in the viscosity of F-actin solutions which was dependent upon the concentration of CE and the duration of incubation of the CE-actin mixture. After two hours of incubation of drug-actin mixtures, the relative effectiveness of the cytochalasins in reducing the viscosity of F-actin was CE > CD > CB = H2CB. The effects of CD and CE were paralleled by morphologic changes in negatively stained actin filaments. The effects of the cytochalasins on the viscosity and morphology of muscle and platelet actin were the same whether the drugs were added before or after the polymerization of the protein. These studies show that the interaction of the cytochalasins with actin is highly specific. Because the relative potencies of these drugs for affecting motile processes and the relative affinities of the drugs for binding sites within a variety of cells are CE > CD > CB = H2CB, the effects of cytochalasins on actin described here may contribute to some of the biological effects of the drugs on motile processes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The response specificity of male Oriental fruit moths, Grapholita molesta (Busck) and pink bollworm moths, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), to different blends and doses of pheromone is altered dramatically by temperature. When acclimated and tested in a flight tunnel at 20oC males of both species exhibit a high degree of specificity, with peak response levels occurring to a narrow range of blend-dose combinations close to the natural blend. When tested at 26oC, however, males exhibit a significantly lower degree of specificity, with peak response occurring to a broader range of treatments. The change in response specificity results from shifts in behavioural threshold effects influencing plume orientation and initiation of upwind flight, as well as from arrestment of upwind flight, occurring later in the flight sequence. The observed changes in male behaviour suggest that the effect of temperature is directly on neural pathways involved in the perception of odour, and not simply the result of an increase in motor activity or a significant change in the release rate of the pheromone. The results support the threshold hypothesis for pheromone perception (Roelofs, 1978) as a general principle in the Lepidoptera, but also show that the degree of response specificity can be significantly affected by temperature.  相似文献

These experiments examined the changes in ventilation during a 40-s ramp increase in exercise load, produced by increasing either the speed of the treadmill or the grade, to equivalent end-points of oxygen uptake. Six subjects underwent five trials each for grade and speed, while ventilation was monitored breath-by-breath. For each subject, ventilation versus time for all five of the speed trials was plotted on a single graph and fitted by linear regression. The data for the grade trials were similarly treated. For all subjects, the slope of the regression line for the speed plots was found to be significantly (P < 0.05) greater than that for the grade plots. We concluded that these experimental results support the hypothesis that the neural drive to ventilation persists as exercise continues and is proportionately related to the frequency of limb movement.  相似文献

The buffering capacity inside thylakoids is determined and the magnitude of flash-induced pH changes inside is calibrated in the pH range from 6.4 to 8.1. The work is based on flash-induced absorption changes of neutral red in a chloroplast suspension in which the outer phase is strongly buffered by bovine serum albumin. It is shown that neutral red is bound inside thylakoids. The binding can be described by a simple isotherm with an apparent Km = 4 μM and saturation at 1 neutral red per 17 chlorophylls. The apparent pK of neutral red is shifted from 6.6 in solution to 7.25 when bound inside. It is demonstrated that neutral red is a clean indicator of pH changes inside, i.e. when properly used it shows no response to other events. Although bound it reports pH changes which occur in the internal osmolar (aqueous) volume of thylakoids. This is obvious from the influence of chemically very different buffers on the magnitude of the absorption changes of neutral red. These act in a manner proportional to their calculated buffering capacity in aqueous solution. The intrinsic buffering capacity of the internal phase is determined with the aid of these buffers, at pH 7.2 it is between 0.8 and 1 mM (at 60 mosM). The absence of large variations in the buffering capacity in the range from pH 6.4 to 8.1 suggests that proteinaceous groups are involved in addition to the lipids which may dominate the buffering capacity at lower pH. The magnitude of the internal pH change is approx. 0.6 (at pH 7.3) under stimulation of both photosystems with a short xenon flash of light.  相似文献
