The aim of this study was to determine the trophic level, trophic breadth, and dietary overlap of two species of otariids (Zalophus californianus and Arctocephalus philippii townsendi) at the San Benito Islands in Baja California, Mexico, using scat analysis, and stable isotope analyses (SIA) of carbon and nitrogen in pup hair and dental collagen. Scat samples were collected during summer and winter. The most important prey for both species during summer was squid, comprising 74% of the A. p. townsendi diet and 45% of that of Z. californianus. In winter, squid was 87% of the A. p. townsendi diet, whereas fish was the predominant food (76%) for Z. californianus. Both species were specialist feeders and reached maximum trophic overlap during the summer (CH = 0.9). SIA of the hair of otariid pups showed significant differences in δ15N (P = 0.001), coinciding with A. p. townsendi's greater consumption of squid. The average δ13C value was significantly lower for A. p. townsendi (?16.3‰ ± 0.2‰), reflecting the species' consumption of squid from pelagic habitats, whereas that of Z. californianus (?15.9‰ ± 0.3‰) was significantly higher, reflecting their consumption of benthic fish. We have previously demonstrated that proteins could stimulate pancreatic secretion independently of luminal bile-pancreatic juice (BPJ) in a BPJ-diverted rat. To determine whether luminal protease-independent pancreatic secretion occurs in normal rats with BPJ returned to the upper small intestine, we investigated the pancreatic secretory response to intraduodenal instillation of a casein hydrolysate or the synthetic trypsin inhibitor, FOY 305, at concentrations which could almost equally inhibit hydrolysis of the synthetic substrate for trypsin with the luminal content. FOY 305 at 10 μg/ml and casein hydrolysate solutions at both 100 and 200 mg/ml similarly inhibited approx. 80% of the tryptic activity in the luminal contents of the proximal small intestine. Intraduodenal administration of casein hydrolysate solutions (100 and 200 mg/ml) significantly increased pancreatic secretion in a dose-dependent manner. However, intraduodenal administration of FOY 305 (10 μg/ml) was ineffective for stimulating pancreatic secretion. These results demonstrate that dietary protein enhances pancreatic secretion independently of the masking of luminal trypsin activity in rats. 相似文献

We studied the food quality of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi to the pirate bug Orius majusculus using Ephestia eggs as high-quality comparison prey. Several performance parameters were tested on individuals that had been reared and maintained on each of the two single-prey diets or on a mixed diet. All fitness parameters were lower in individuals fed aphids only, indicating poor food quality of this prey. Compared with the pure Ephestia egg diet, the mixed diet enhanced teneral mass, while adult survival and female starvation tolerance were negatively affected and all other traits were unaffected. Body protein proportions were constant across diets, whereas lipid proportion was low in the aphid treatment. Preference for aphids was lower following a monotypic aphid diet than when reared on Ephestia eggs or a mixed diet. The results confirm that R. padi is low-quality food for O. majusculus as it is for other generalist predators, even though O. majusculus may contribute significantly to population suppression of the aphid. 相似文献

Hypotheses to explain the causes of diversity gradients have increasingly focused on the factors that actually change species numbers, namely speciation, extinction and dispersal. A common assumption of many of these hypotheses is that there should be phylogenetic signal in diversification rates, yet this assumption has rarely been tested explicitly. In this study, we compile a large data set including 328,219 species of plants, mammals, amphibians and squamates to assess the level of phylogenetic signal in their diversification rates. Significant phylogenetic signal was detected in all data sets, except for squamates, suggesting not only that closely related clades indeed might share similar diversification rates, but also that the level of phylogenetic signal might vary considerably between them. Moreover, there were intriguing differences among taxa in the rate of decay in phylogenetic autocorrelation over time, underscoring the existence of taxon-specific patterns of phylogenetic autocorrelation. Species that cross strong environmental gradients are expected to face divergent selective pressures that can act on sexually‐selected traits. In the present study, we examine the role of hypoxia and carotenoid availability in driving divergence in two sexually‐selected traits, male colour and reproductive behaviour, in the African cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae. Low‐dissolved oxygen (DO) (hypoxic) environments are expected to be energetically challenging; given that male nuptial colour expression and courtship displays can be costly, we expected fish in low‐DO versus high‐DO environments to differ in these traits. First, a field survey was used to describe natural variation in male nuptial colour patterns and diet across habitats divergent in DO. Next, using wild‐caught fish from a low‐DO and high‐DO habitat, we tested for differences in reproductive behaviour. Finally, a laboratory rearing experiment was used to quantify the interaction of DO and diet (low‐ versus high‐carotenoid availability) on the expression of male colour during development. In energetically challenging low‐DO environments, fish were more red and, in high‐DO environments, fish were typically brighter and more yellow. The frequency of reproductive displays in fish of low‐DO origin was 75% lower, although this had no consequence for brooding frequency (i.e. both populations produced the same number of broods on average). Our laboratory rearing study showed carotenoid availability to be important in colour production with no direct influence of DO on colour. Additionally, weak patterns of diet variation across wild populations suggest that other factors in combination with diet are contributing to colour divergence. 相似文献

Dietary restriction (DR) is the most universal intervention known to extend animal lifespan. DR also prevents tumor development in mammals, and this effect requires the tumor suppressor PTEN. However, the metabolic and cellular processes that underly the beneficial effects of DR are poorly understood. We identified slcf‐1 in an RNAi screen for genes that extend Caenorhabditis elegans lifespan in a PTEN/daf‐18‐dependent manner. We showed that slcf‐1 mutation, which increases average lifespan by 40%, mimics DR in worms fed ad libitum. An NMR‐based metabolomic characterization of slcf‐1 mutants revealed lower lipid levels compared to wild‐type animals, as expected for dietary‐restricted animals, but also higher pyruvate content. Epistasis experiments and metabolic measurements support a model in which the long lifespan of slcf‐1 mutants relies on increased mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism coupled to an adaptive response to oxidative stress. This response requires DAF‐18/PTEN and the previously identified DR effectors PHA‐4/FOXA, HSF‐1/HSF1, SIR‐2.1/SIRT‐1, and AMPK/AAK‐2. Overall, our data show that pyruvate homeostasis plays a central role in lifespan control in C. elegans and that the beneficial effects of DR results from a hormetic mechanism involving the mitochondria. Analysis of the SLCF‐1 protein sequence predicts that slcf‐1 encodes a plasma membrane transporter belonging to the conserved monocarboxylate transporter family. These findings suggest that inhibition of this transporter homolog in mammals might also promote a DR response. 相似文献

Aim Geographic variation in species richness is a well‐studied phenomenon. However, the unique response of individual lineages to environmental gradients in the context of general patterns of biodiversity across broad spatial scales has received limited attention. The focus of this research is to examine relationships between species richness and climate, topographic heterogeneity and stream channel characteristics within and among families of North American freshwater fishes. Location The United States and Canada. Methods Distribution maps of 828 native species of freshwater fishes were used to generate species richness estimates across the United States and Canada. Variation in species richness was predicted using spatially explicit models incorporating variation in climate, topography and/or stream channel length and stream channel diversity for all 828 species as well as for the seven largest families of freshwater fishes. Results The overall gradient of species richness in North American freshwater fishes is best predicted by a model incorporating variables describing climate and topography. However, the response of species richness to particular climate or landscape variables differed among families, with models possessing the highest predictive ability incorporating data on climate, topography and/or stream channel characteristics within a region. Main conclusions The correlations between species richness and abiotic variables suggest a strong influence of climate and physical habitat on the structuring of regional assemblages of North American freshwater fishes. However, the relationship between these variables and species richness varies among families, suggesting the importance of phylogenetic constraints on the regulation of geographic distributions of species. 相似文献

Dental topographic analysis is the quantitative assessment of shape of three‐dimensional models of tooth crowns and component features. Molar topographic curvature, relief, and complexity correlate with aspects of feeding behavior in certain living primates, and have been employed to investigate dietary ecology in extant and extinct primate species. This study investigates whether dental topography correlates with diet among a diverse sample of living platyrrhines, and compares platyrrhine topography with that of prosimians. We sampled 111 lower second molars of 11 platyrrhine genera and 121 of 20 prosimian genera. For each tooth we calculated Dirichlet normal energy (DNE), relief index (RFI), and orientation patch count (OPCR), quantifying surface curvature, relief, and complexity respectively. Shearing ratios and quotients were also measured. Statistical analyses partitioned effects of diet and taxon on topography in platyrrhines alone and relative to prosimians. Discriminant function analyses assessed predictive diet models. Results indicate that platyrrhine dental topography correlates to dietary preference, and platyrrhine‐only predictive models yield high rates of accuracy. The same is true for prosimians. Topographic variance is broadly similar among platyrrhines and prosimians. One exception is that platyrrhines display higher average relief and lower relief variance, possibly related to lower relative molar size and functional links between relief and tooth longevity distinct from curvature or complexity. Explicitly incorporating phylogenetic distance matrices into statistical analyses of the combined platyrrhine‐prosimian sample results in loss of significance of dietary effects for OPCR and SQ, while greatly increasing dietary significance of RFI.
